Giants, Manning agree to 6 years, $97 million deal
From the Associated Press:
Eli Manning has agreed to a new six-year, $97 million contract extension with the New York Giants that will make him the highest paid player in the NFL with an average salary of roughly $15.3 million.
A person close to the talks who asked not to be identified because the deal was not signed says Manning is guaranteed $35 million under the deal which will keep him with the Giants through the 2015 season.
My take: Not the $110 million or more we thought he might get, but I would take it.

rip off
I’d say the giants just got ripped off. Eli is not worth that much per year. No where close.
You joined just to drop that comment?
Do you have anything to say in support that opinion, or do I have to look forward to you posting more baseless comments in the future?

Would you agree that Eli is a top 10 QB?
If you do (and you should), then of course he’s worth it. He’ll only be the top paid (and a big emphasis on PER YEAR basis only) until the next QB signs his contract. Also, what’s more important is the size of the contract relative to the team’s salary cap. Eli’s is much less compared to how much Peyton and McNabb are relative to their team’s.
While I won't post anything more that might hurt your feelings.
But Eli Manning would certainly NOT be in my top 10 QBs in the NFL. Without Plaxico this will be proven when he’s looking like a deer in the headlights without his security blanket.
Here are 12 QBs I would put before Eli, not in any particular order:
Tom Brady
Peyton Manning
Drew Brees
Matt Cassell
Jay Cutler
Donovan McNabb
Carson Palmer
Philip Rivers
Ben Roethlisberger
Tony Romo
Matt Ryan
Kurt Warner
Google “Top QBs in the NFL” and the high majority of those lists will not have Eli Manning in the Top 10.
smart man here
ya’ll should learn something from this guy. knows his stuff… i would disagree with cassel and cutler (for the time being, if he proves he can do it without marshall ill give him props). otherwise, all these QB’s are better than lame-duck

If this is really your list
of QBs better than Eli Manning, then I suggest you stop watching football through beer-goggles. Matt Ryan? Tony Romo? Matt Cassell? A lot of your list hasn’t even won a playoff game yet. Actually, I retract my earlier statement. You might just want to stop watching football.
I would rather have Eli than Cutler, Rivers, Romo, Cassell, and McNabb....

I think we all expected
this contract to make him the highest paid player, simply based on position and the expected increase in the salary cap. The Giants were better off extending the contract, rather than waiting for it to expire, obviously. It will be interesting to see how much the next big-name QB gets in comparison.

the price you pay
It’s just the price you pay for the position. The next QB is gonna get more and the QB after him will get even more. I think Eli deserves it anyway. Super Bowl winner and he’s clutch as hell. I just hope he can put the team on his back and have another pro bowl season with all these young recievers. He’s pretty good at spreading the ball around.

Sure...
Eli Manning’s defense won a SB. (clapping) Good for you Eli – It got you a $97 million deal.
However, the lasting memory I have of Eli were the passes he was throwing against the Eagles in the playoffs that resembled the plastic bag from American Beauty.
Bye, Big Stew and JJ :(
I'm fine with it.
Honestly. I’m fine with it. I think people forget how how hard it is to have a superbowl winning QB. Seriously, how many are out there? I mean the guy has taken the Giants to 4 playoff appearances in his 5 years. Has everyone even forgotten the Dave Brown, Danny Kannel, Kent Graham, Collins, and the brief Warner era.
Mixed feelings
While he needed a contract extension, he is not worth $15.3 million per season. However, he is an above-average quarterback whom doesn’t get injured, which is vital to a team’s success. If he can manage the offense well enough to get them to the playoffs, which he has done every year since 2005, I say he is worthy of his contract extension.
Leave the Philly trolls to their misery
They can whine all they want about the $$$. Eli has a ring, and McNabb doesn’t. End of discussion.

I sincerely
don’t know if Eli is worth this much, however I do think that is worth to have stability at that position, after we’ve been through in the 90’s with the Kannells, the Dave Browns, Kent Grahams.
I think we know what we are getting, is not like we are signing Mark Sanchez to a multi million contract without knowing how is going to work out. With Eli we know there are going be terrible games, bad throws, interceptions but that he will win when it matters. To add this, we have a QB who’s been taking us four consecutive times (or five) to the playoffs. I think at the beggining he will have a hard time because he will be critized for everything, he will settle down and start playing good football again
I'll agree.
Matt Stafford and Mark Sanchez screwed the Giants.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=laydODN6xVk
This is a terrible move
We’ll never win a thing with this guy. We should have gone with a QB who has played their whole career without great receivers, since we have such garbage on our roster. I think on that list at the top I saw
Tom Brady
Peyton Manning
Drew Brees
Matt Cassell
Jay Cutler
Donovan McNabb
Carson Palmer
Philip Rivers
Ben Roethlisberger
Tony Romo
Matt Ryan
Kurt Warner
I mean none of those guys could claim that they played with good or great receivers, so why couldn’t we trade for one of them, so we could finally see what it looks like? And I think it is beyond ridiculous that in a year when the cap went up significantly and when there is a possibility of 2010 being an uncapped year that we should spend so much money on a throw away position like QB. I mean we could have taken that cap space and signed some of the great free agents out there, like Charlie Batch, Craig Nall, or J.P. Losman! THAT would have been more prudent use of the team’s cash.

I’m going to break it down like this….
Eagles trolls can spew all the stats and say Eli is overpaid all they want but we are still basking in the afterglow of a recent Super Bowl win and have a good shot of getting back to the big game with him as the QB. The main stat is McNabb has multiple seasons of choking and incidentally is also 1st in the league in vomiting on the field during the big game. The last time the Eagles won a Championship, the Vienam War just started, Muhammad Ali was still called Cassius Clay and the AFL wasn’ t even part of the league yet. That is a long time to be a fan of a loser team so I can understand the bitterness. Until the Eagles and their Chunky Soup-slingin QB can bring it home there really NOTHING their fans can hang their hats on.

Panthers
Delhomme will do enough, the RB’s (emphasis more than one) are excellent and so is the defense.
michael turner
has had the load of a starter for one full year now.. he’s no where near burnt out. and that o-line of theirs can only get better with time.

LJ did it for 2 seasons
and really the first season was more like 1/2 a season.
We will see, but generally RB’s that carry the ball 370+ times for one season are a shell of themselves the next.

And Matt Ryan
didn’t have a great roster as well? People seem to think that the Falcons improvement last year was solely due to Ryan. Wrong. Matt ryan had a very good o-line as well, and the second best running back in the league last year, as well as a number of good receivers. Stop talking like Eli’s the only QB in the league who had any talent around him.
My only point is that Eli hasn't proven he isn't Trent Dilfer yet.
Sure he had a nice little playoff run there but whatever. Peyton Manning and Tom Brady carry their teams and you can’t tell me he deserves more money than them. The same goes for Drew Brees, Kurt Warner, etc.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=laydODN6xVk
He's not better than Peyton or Brady..
Who is? But Trent Dilfer never took a team to the playoffs 4 years in a row. Trent Dilfer never won Super Bowl MVP. Trent Dilfer didn’t throw for 150 yards and 2 tds in the 4th quarter, in his 4th year against (what some call) the best team in NFL history.

the difference is Eli gets a contract now
why do the #1 picks each year get more money? What makes Matt Stafford any better than Jake Long or JaMarcus Russell?
Nothing, but its just that the contracts escalate over the years.
Eli is not better than those guys, but the share of the cap for your Franchise QB, a SB winning QB at that, says Eli get what he gets.
Eli has proven he's better than Dilfer
Its Jason Campbell who hasn’t proven shit yet. Don’t mix up the guy who gets in the playoffs his entire career + SB win with a guy who hasn’t done anything yet.
im not...
this time i have every right to tell you to read better. i said they both had great pieces around them to start their careers.. Ryan, however, was the only one who did anything with that talent around him

Fair enough
You clarified your point. However, your initial point still doesn’t make sense. Eli didn’t have the best o-line in the NFL his first year. In fact, they were very average. He had an above average RB, a good TE (Shockey), and a very average WR corps (starring Amani Toomer and Ike Hilliard). The defense was above average as well.
I would completely argue that Matt Ryan had a better team around him last year than Eli had his first year.
wasnt eli's RB

westbrook joined the Eagles in ’02 and barely contributed that year. he had less that 400 yards receiving in ’03 (TO year) an wsa hurt for 1/4 of each of the next two years. granted, he got over 600 yds receiving in each of those two years but i wouldnt call that the kind of elite WR help a QB would want (900 plus yds receiving and 7 plus tds…). it was not until recently (3 years ago) that Westbrook developed into a truly devastating multi-purpose threat. before that, McNabb had to spread the ball around to absolute shit and they still had one of the best records in football over that span.

It's Brady, Peyton and Eli -- top 3 in the NFL. Wake up!
Top 3 QB’s in the NFL:
Tom Brady
Peyton Manning
ELI MANNING
How quickly we forget!! 2 minutes left, game on the line, I’d take any one of these 3 in a toss-up. Claiming Plaxico was the “reason” for Eli’s success is absurd! Why not talk also about the top WR’s for Brady and Peyton? That ‘07 run-up through the playoffs and to the Super Bowl championship was the most sustained, improbable, astounding, awe-inspiring display of quarterback intelligence, talent and grace under pressure that I’ve ever seen. Manning has ALWAYS been a great quarterback in the last 2 minutes. Tthat’s the telling point. Before he’s done he may be top 10 all-time. He has the gift. His stats are fine, but they don’t tell the story.
Manning
I just joined this so I’m to get some hate after I say this….
But from what I’m reading is that Eli did this and Eli did that…..remember though that he did all of that with a legit #1 receiver. What did he do last season AFTER Plax was out? He did absolutely nothing. You have a great defense, but once the teams start to stop your running game and you have to rely on Eli. Man, don’t want to be a Giants fan!! And just think how bad it will be when Jacobs gets hurt, he does every season for a few games……Eli will be again running scared with that look of “Oops, I think I pooped myself again.”
If your defense can carry you, you will have another decent season, but I don’t think they will because they will get tired being on the field for so long every game.
thanks for backin me up
ive been sayin this all along and no one here seems to care. they either change the subject immediately or say the impact of plax’s departure was minimal at best. dude was a beast for ya’ll and you say he wasnt that important. ha
by RIP26_litodoin'work on Aug 6, 2009 2:40 PM EDT up reply actions
He was a beast for the Giants……he killed the Eagles all the time and not because of Eli. I could have just thrown the ball in his direction like Eli did and he would have caught it too. He’s just that good. He will make most QB’s better. I’d love to have him in Eagles colors…..well before he decided to play cool and shoot himself.
You guys are right
Fellow Giants fans, we best just write emails to the Giant organization and tell them to give up right now. Without Plax to help Eli (once Jacobs goes down), the better part of valor will be to simply forfeit.
As for a serious answer, losing Plax hurts (anyone who says it is nothing is just being silly). However, the difference between last year and this one is that Gilbride has had an entire off-season to plan the offense around not having Plax, and I suspect that will make a difference (it is quite tough to shift the focal point of a passing game that late into the year). They also added a couple high draft picks at WR (one of which is a monster at 6’6", perfect for that lob throw that everyone seems to think Eli needs, despite it not being a very effective play overall).
As for the "Oops, I think I pooped myself again." troll attempt, not going to bite. Points for trying though.
ramses barden
may very well be 6’6" but there have been plenty of freakishly tall wideouts who havent panned out in the NFL. the real question is.. can the guy play ball?

You do realize that guy in your photo...
Is a Bronco.
You’re defense won’t be to much of a challenge for Eli all by himself with the heart and soul gone.

Heart and soul
Dawkins is gone, true. I’m a huge fan of his, but he was a liability last year in pass coverage. So that part of the coverage should only get better. I’m personally more worried about the lose of Bradley then Dawkins
You also seem to be forgetting that with Asante, Brown, Mikell and Demps/Jones (if they play to their ability) will be more then enough for Eli.
Can't replace heart.
Even more so now that JJ is gone (RIP)…lots to worry about on that side of the ball.

If they play to their ability
What if they don’t? You (and the other eagles fans) love to come on here and talk about how Eli won’t play well, Jacobs will get hurt, the WR won’t step up, Barden will be a bust. But you guys have just as many question marks. What if Jackson has a soph year slump? What if Westbrook gets injured? What if, god forbid, McNabb gets hurt again? What if the players you just mentioned don’t play to their ability?
Your entire argument for Eagles supremacy is based on all the Giants playing to their worst-case scenario and all the Eagles playing to their absolute best-case scenarios. Not a very sound argument.
p.s. Eli is one of the most clutch QBs in the league. 18 4th quarter game winning drives in 4 1/2 regular seasons. Plus 2 game-winning 4th quarter drives in the SB. That’s clutch.
ive never said
1) barden will be a bust
2) jacobs will get hurt (though history shows hes more than likely too. as it does for westbrook too)
I HAVE said that:
1) Eli wont play as well as he did last year before Plax left, because, well, once Plax left, he didnt play well
and no, i’m certainly not saying that the G-men will play to “their worst-case scenario,” as you so aptly put it.. only that eli manning wont be anywhere near as productive as he was last year, which will put pressure on the run game to produce (which is missing a piece that comprised 24.7% of the Giants’ offensive yardage and a receiver who made Eli a significantly better QB when he played as opposed to when he didnt step on the field), which will cause opposing defenses to stack the box in anticipation of the run, which will end drives quickly if they arent able to convert, which will put their staunch d on the field, which will save them for a few games early on but will eventually tire out later on in the season because of the lack of offensive production, which will lead to losses in the W-L column.
this is my prediction for the G-men in 2009. if a receiver can step it up and replace what Burress brought to the table immediately then i’ll take back everything i just said. aside from WR and MLB (Pierce has lost a step or two but can still rally the D) you guys have a solid team. Eli wont be the same without Plax, you can count on that.

Truth
You just put it very well. Before the season starts, everything we all say is complete conjecture.
My response was not so much a response to just you, but a response to the eagles fans posting here as a whole. there have definitely been comments that barden will be a bust, that jacobs will get hurt, etc. Didn’t mean to single you out (and if you look at my post, i didn’t)
yea i know
i figured that as much but i also figured id argue the point anyways

I’ve said absolutely nothing about the “Eagles supremacy”. The only thing I’ve mentioned is that we have other stand out players that have played pretty consistantly through the years (Samuel, Bunkley, Brown, Patterson, Cole, Mikell, etc). Yes, anyone can have an off season or get hurt, I agree. But you have the huge question mark with Eli without Plax. The times he’s been without Plax he’s shown his true colors by not playing well. So that is your big question, you now have a season where you are relying on a lot of players that either haven’t shown much, you’re current set of WR’s….or relying on a lot of rookies to step in and be very good, Barden, etc.
I’m not saying it can’t happen but it seems like you are all thinking it will be easier then it really is. I for one would be more optimistic if I’ve could trust in Eli carrying the team on his own, which in the past he hasn’t been able to do without that true #1 receiver.
Clutch with Plax…..anyone is. I don’t think any of you know how much of a nightmare he was to defend and now that he is gone your offense will be much easier to defend. Unless someone has a huge season, which could happen but banking on a rookie WR to come out and dominate like Plax did is aiming pretty high in my opinion.
My only disagreement
is that you’ve argued that McNabb, Brady, etc. have shown they can play without a star WR. Yes, Eli’s late-season performance does put his ability into question, but simply because he hasn’t had to play without a star WR for most of his career doesn’t mean he is incapable of doing so. In fact, if you look at other posts on the topic, Eli has played very well in a couple of games w/o Plax, in addition to a few poor performances. I’m not going to rehash old arguments, but while Plax does create a huge hole, other players have shown in limited reps that they are capable of stepping into that hole. Whether they will or not is something we will just have to wait to find out.
I agree it is a question mark entering the season, however, I believe Eli and the other WRs are capable of taking up the slack. Feel free to disagree, just don’t make it out to be fact.
Also please note...
You act like Plax was a top 5 wide reciever. He ener has been, and shooting himself in the leg shouldn’t change that.
He’s never been named to the All Pro team.
He’s never been to a Pro Bowl.
And to my knowledge, he was never a true number one receiver until Eli came to town.

I can understand why Eagles fans troll on this board. They are frustrated at the lack of sucess their club has. That’s their last refuge because they can’t hang around in their own board and argue the succes of their own quaterback. I mean no league championships in what 40 years when every in the division has at least 3. The simple fact is undeniable: they haven’t experienced winning in the most competitive division in the League. Dallas and Washington have a winning history and at the end of each season that’s at least something their fans can hang their hat on. Eagles fans really have nothing and will continue to felate the rest of the NFC East until they do win.
oh sure
But we own your house. I believe we ran (or at least Westy did) with a win in your house in the regular season and the playoffs. Yup Eli is clutch isn’t he.
82-70
All time record.
You still have a bit of catching up to do before you own anyone.

In the last 6 years
The Giants are 2-4 at home against the Eagles
….including losing the last 2 in a row
The Giants are 4-2 at Philadelphia
….including winning the last 4 in a row
So, tell me again, who owns who? I’d say neither team has been very good at home against the other.
YESSSSSSSSSS
I’m very happy that Eli got this contract. Not because he deserves it which he isn’t-top paid player, best player in the nfl? I don’t think so! Looks like a country bumpkin belongs in a boces class. But I am very glad they are giving Eli more money because thats money they could be paying athletes to improve their team. Give Eli all your money.
~Go Birds
You say it sista!
Keep up the intelligent analysis!…….
Money is due to those who perform. This is for a player who is in sync with his team, not to be compared with other players around the league and other teams.
Sit back and watch Eli go this season...
I guess stats don’t matter, and performance doesn’t matter, and grace under pressure doesn’t matter, and 2-minute drills don’t matter, and brilliant audibles don’t matter, and defeating the team that was supposed to go undefeated and was massively favored over the Giants doesn’t matter, and making the plays when he has to doesn’t matter.
All these wildly talented QB’s are better than Eli, who can’t be said in the same breath as Brady or Peyton or Romo or McNabb or whoever.
You guys made up your minds in 2005 and nothing will ever change that because you’ve mouthed off so much about Eli being a bum that you’d have to eat too many words by now. All I can say is, any Giant fan who doesn’t feel eternally grateful for the year Eli gave us, culminating in one of the greatest Super Bowl upsets in history is foolish. And to claim that Plaxico was the reason is absolutely laughable. Argue for Strahan, or Osi, or Jacobs. But Plax?? A good receiver who is completely replaceable. Watch Eli go, and prepare to sit down over a piping hot bowl of your latest silly comments. I remember when so many Giant fans hated Phil Simms. I also remember when Parcells said “One day you’ll be saying — ’he’s good, but he’s no Phil Simms’”. So now there you are: Eli’s ok but he’s no Phil Simms. And to suggest he’s nothing without Burress? Oh my lord. I’ve been watching these guys since Fran Tarkenton and Homer Jones and Eli’s already up there with Phil (and both are better than Fran, much as I loved him). Give Eli a few more years and Phil (who should be in the Hall) will have to be No. 2 in Giants history. And Eli would go down as one of the all-time greats in the NFL. Not McNabb, fellas. Wake up to what you have in your own backyard, and recognize the man’s gift while he’s here.
