Chiefs sign Toomer to one year contract

It looks like Toomer will be playing pitch and catch with Matt Cassel this year.  He will bring a great veteran attitude to a team that needs some life in it's offense.  Frankly I'm surprised he didn't find a home sooner.  If I were a Chiefs fan I would be extremely happy about the deal.  Over on Arrowhead Pride they are comparing Toomer with great veterans like Zack Thomas and Mike Vrabel.  The young receivers he will compliment would do well to learn all they can from the old "well dressed" Amani.

sad to see him go

Amani will always be one of my favorites. i think he can still contribute, and it’ll be interesting to see what he does in Kansas City.

Good luck to Toomer

He may be gone to a different team, but he will always be a Giant.

same, I couldn’t believe other teams weren’t interested in him. I thought the Titans were going to sign him for sure… its true that he would only be on the team for one or two years, but I think the Titans know their window of opportunity is closing with every year Kerry Collins gets older. They aren’t putting their money on vince young, that’s for sure. Now is their time to win a superbowl, they know that. I thought it was a win-win for them to sign Toomer in a bunch of different ways, they have an experienced vet to help develop britt, gage, etc… a go-to guy for VY if he needs to step in… and he is obviously already very familiar with Collins.

Amani

Congrats to Amani – by mid season the Jints will wish they still had him !

by ronrat2 on Aug 4, 2009 9:59 PM EDT reply actions

Lets hope it doesn't come to that.

Maybe our receivers this year will be like the Miami no-name defense that managed to help thier team go undefeated. As we know, the greatest Giant team ever (at least in my opinion) wasn’t blessed with a big time star at wide receiver.

I’m sure Toomer will do well in KC but it did seem that it was time for him to leave NY.

I was..

Very surprised to see the Giants let him go..He still has alot of game in him and I’m sure he will show that this year…Good luck Amani..and thanks for all of the exciting memories..You’ll always have a fan in me!…When you run a route in a Red uniform, I’ll always think it is Blue!

It’s gonna be a little weird watching Amani mentor a young KC receiving corps. He really should be doing that here and I kinda wished he’d retire a Giant. Thanks for the memories Amani.

even weirder: we play the Chiefs this season
awesome: we play the Saints and Shockey

Amani was a class act

Lots of players think the world sets on them. I live in Michigan so I have seen this quiet, super talented young man become a go to receiver for my New York Giants, and I was obviously extremely happy. But when the Giants released him, I thought,, why,,if they are looking for someone who can be an on the field coach while being a proven veteran to come off the bench in case an injury occurs, who better?
But I cannot question the Giants people. They have shown me over and over that they know how to manage a football team.
Best of luck Amani! You were and always will be a class guy in a sport when the scum like Vick get the headlines!

My bet

He took a lot less from the Chiefs than he would have accepted from the Jints.

I agree with you all. Toomer was a great player and a class act for the Giants. Unfortunately, I think Reese made a hard headed calculation about what he was worth, and it wasn’t the same as what Toomer thought.

Many times a veteran player goes to a new team and it gives him a new life. I hope Armani does well in KC

One more thought. When Armani was a pup with the jints, there was a receiver named Mike Sharrard. Sharrard was an adequate receiver – never as good as Toomer, but was still considered the number one for the Giants at the time. After 3 seasons, the Giants let him go, because they felt they needed to let Toomer and Hilliard grow

Joe Torre and Bill Parcells

Have both said the hardest thing for a manager/coach to do is part with a loyal veteran. But like Alstar9111 said, you have to give Jerry Reese the benefit of the doubt in the judgement game, The guy has been mint for the G-Men.

Amani's time had come

His tip-toe sideline catches were things of beauty. But the team now is filled with [unproven] posession receivers, and the younger guys have a better YAC potential so…

A whole one year younger than he is now.Maybe I’m just pissed because I’ve owned 5 giants jerseys. Kerry Collins (cut it up and threw it out the day before the superbowl… no joke), Plaxico and Shockey (can’t wear either of those..), Toomer, and Strahan. I can proudly wear the last two but i dont have a jersey of anyone still on the team!!

GNR,

I guess you gotta go with whomever you feel is more likely to stay! Not sure where they stand on contracts…

You play to win the game!
