Around SBN: Interview With UMD Athletic Director, Dr. Debbie Yow

An open Letter to Antonio Pierce

Dear AP,

I'm sorry for doubting your ability and your importance to the defense.  I never realized until this preseason that the defense just isn't the same without you.  You may be past your prime and not the player you were a couple years ago but dammit, you get the job done!  Chase Blackburn is a good special teams player and a servicable backup, but I'm afraid we've seen him exploited multiple times this preseason.  Jonathan Goff could develop into a decent Mike Backer, but he may be a year or two away.  I've been guilty of trying to replace you this entire offseason, but now i realize that when utilized properly, you're one of the better inside linebackers in the conference.  Just do all of us a favor and speak to the media.

Sincerely,

A repentant Giants Fan

I believe you are the one with head up one's ass

AP might be slow and many times has no business in coverage, but kinda like how the Eagles are gonna miss Dawkins, AP is that coach on the field for the Giants that you always notice when he’s NOT on the field more than when he’s actually on it.

There’s a reason the defense hasn’t looked like it should in the preseason….its cuz no AP. Maybe you’d see that if YOUR head wasn’t up……

Patriots have Belicheck

and he’ll always be a Giant in my book, regarless of where he has found his success. I never saw him with the Gints, but as far as I know the fans that did still respect him (kinda like I do with John Fox and Spags….but those 2 couldn’t wash Belicheck’s hoodie)

I could care less if Derek Jeter went to the Red Sox and got his 4000 hit, I’ll always hate the Red Sox (***shudder’s at the thought of that).

we're all entitled to an opinion

and it happens to be mine that AP is important to the Giant defense. Maybe he’s only a two down player at this point in his career, but his early down prowess is evident.

Hey guys..your getting a little testy here..

We are all friends and yes AP is important..Mostly for his thinking on the field these days than physical ability..He can still stuff a run, probably can’t fall back and cover like he used to, but he damn sure is going to try..Gotta love him, he’s tough. I just hope he’s teaching somebody to eventually gain his ability to see and call the right schemes.

p.s.

when everyone was dumping on AP I had his back!
Also the guy took a one-day interning spot on the Howard Stern show. Cool guy.

2007 NFC Championship Game

That’s all I’m saying.

I like how you guys can go back and forth...

but keep it respectful…i admire that.

Ok, where do i start. First and foremost…hey leave Chase Blackburn alone…LOL. I think Chase is getting a bum wrap right now just like AP did end of last year. The best LB on the field but suffers from no pass rush and lack of help on either side of him. Yeah, Chase got beat bad on that TD but made a few really nice plays. He’s not a starting MIKE but has played commendable.

Another point….and this may sound crazy. So far in the pre season I see the giants’ defense being very reliant upon their MIKE for a lot of solo tackles. Maybe that’s because Philips hasn’t played a lot? Maybe it’s Clark and Kehl are getting taken outta the play? Or maybe it’s the whole team not playing to their potential…I mean, giving an NFL QB 4-5 seconds…cornerbacks and safeties can’t follow WR’s let alone a LB covering TE’s and RB’s.

I really think AP will have his hands full this season and as Giant fans we can only hope Boley or someone steps up to help him out b/c it’s not just Brian Westbrook that plays in this division…Witten, Cooley, Portis, F. Jones, etc.

The real questions is, when will we give up on Clark and let Kehl or Chase play over there when AP gets back.

AP

shouldn’t have been put in that position in the first place.. Westbrook is the most dynamic receiving back in the NFL, he should have a safety or a faster linebacker with help shadowing him (22 eyes on 36) people seem to forget that Michael Johnson missed a tackle on that play. AP will have a chip on his shoulder this season, watch.

while i’m sure everyone here would love it if we had a player who runs the show like AP does and plays every down but you’ve got to realise what you have and work around it. Look at the patriots, they realised what they had in bruschi and worked around his limitations (age – loss of speed – not playing every down).

it’s clear that the giants have been missing something on defence in the pre-season. maybe it’s sheriden needing more time, but it may be all the bloody injuries we’ve had to deal with.

I think it's the missing personnel

Not having Canty, Bernard, AP, Boley, and Ross (combine Canty & Bernard and call that 1 starter) and we’re missing 4 of 11 defensive starters for the rpeseason, including field general AP

kiwanuka

just making sure aobut this..

with osi back, kiwanuka will be playing linebacker right?

by Moshe52792 on Sep 5, 2009 6:53 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

nope.

We drafted Sintim this year, another year in the system for Kehl too. No way does he go back to LB, tho Id think that there may be a few crazy looks where he’s standing up pre-snap.

Kiwi will be in the DE rotation and more than likely we’ll see a D-Line of Tuck, Osi and Kiwi lined up somewhere on a 3rd down, similar to the Strahan, Tuck, Osi and Kiwi we saw in 07.

prediction

Giants use their first draft pick on a middle line backer next year. Hopefully, AP will teach the kid and net get in a snit about it.
