Pre-season Game 3: Giants meet the Sanchez's ... er, Jets

New York Jets at New York Giants, Aug 29, 2009 8:00 PM EDT

NEW YORK GIANTS (1-1) Pre-season Game #3
NEW YORK JETS (0-2)
Giants_icon_medium
VS.   Jets_icon_medium

Date: August 29, 2009
Location: East Rutherford, N.J.
Time: 8 p.m. EDT Stadium: Giants Stadium
TV: NBC (Channel 4 in New York)
Radio: WCBS-FM (101.1)

Tonight will be the 33rd and final meeting at Giants Stadium between our New York Giants and the New York Jets. Bad weather is apparently expected, so this could be a sloppy game in which neither team really gets a lot of work done.

Here is the list of Giants who won't play tonight

Not expected to play against the Jets due to injury: Defensive linemen Chris Canty (hamstring) and Jay Alford (knee), cornerbacks Aaron Ross (hamstring) and Stoney Woodson (ankle), linebackers Antonio Pierce (foot) and Michael Boley (PUP/hip), wide receiver David Tyree (hamstring), offensive lineman Orrin Thompson (quad) and running back Andre Brown (Achilles). Tyree was a late addition to this list, and that could mean we never see him in a Giants' uniform again.

Use this as your Open Thread.

Tyree

Man, either that guy knows he’s gone, or he knows something we don’t. Glad I picked up a Jacobs jersey today and not the Tyree one. Maybe I’ll go and grab that one for about $10 after he gets cut and keep it as a memento.

No one will ever be upset with you for sporting a Tyree jersey. I say get ’em while you can.

Thank god its still pre-season, but Steve Smith should’ve caught that ball…now he just has to not let it bother him…hope he has a better game…

2 interference calls on Lito

and two that should have been called.

I guess he’s looking for the Deangelo Hall Defensive Award for Outstanding Contributions to Referee Usefulness.

And damn…Eli is playing as well as any QB can. Smith has much better hands than that though…I honestly think we can chalk that up to something of a fluke.

I'm glad I stood by TC all this time...

I love the intangibles he brings to coaching and the game of football…he just makes sound mgt decisions, and knows the details. Saved the Giants 18 yards having the re-punt.

there’s lots of suggestions listed above.
They’ve done okay so far, with 2 exceptions (Smith drop of perfectly thrown 50yd ball from Manning that would’ve gone for extra yds into a TD & Hixon deflects ball he should’ve caught and it got intercepted)…other than that so far – nice catch by Nicks, Boss, a couple from Manningham (i think)..TD pass to Jacobs too

This will be a very long up and down season

Eli is a problem. The WR’s are a major problem. The DL is not what it was — free agency be damned. The OL is not what it was. Yes, this is preseason, but if you do not see major problems with this team — Manning is being outplayed by a rookie — then you are a pollyanna of the highest order. 9-7 at best, 8-8 more likely. Mark my words. I am correct on this. And yes, I am a fan, and angry at J. Reese for ignoring the glaring lack of a #1 WR.
And Manning — will never, ever be great. Will always be streaky and inaccurate. Until, or if,
Bardem gets the game, Eli will be overthrowing his WR’s for quite some time. He is not Peyton.

I'm not a Jets Fan. I'm a Realist.

The Giants have mucho work to do if they want to make the playoffs. They are not near ready to defend the division title. None of the problems that caused them to lose 3 out of 4 games at the tail end and one and out in the playoffs have been fixed. Not one. You want to look at it through rose colored glasses, go ahead. You’ll be kicking and cursing them plenty of times over the next 19 weeks, I guarantee, and wondering what the hell went wrong. I’m telling you now — it’s already gone wrong because they did not adequately address their
all too apparent weaknesses. Sorry. It’s just a fact.

Main problem....

= DL depth. Id say they at least tried to solve it. You lose Strahan and have Osi injured, that’s gonna catch up sooner or later. They sign Canty and Bernard and Osi is back. Id say problem #1 is solved.

I guess it would have made people like you feel better if they traded for a Edwards or Boldin, but that would be a failure on all fronts if they do that.

They did it the right way in drafting at the WR position. If the Giants don’t go all the way this season, its not cuz of the WR position (pretty much like it was last season……..)

GODZZIIIIIRRRRRRRRRRRRAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!!!!!!

by FreeBradshaw on Aug 29, 2009 9:43 PM EDT up reply actions

i don't understand

how did they not address their issues? they went and bulked up their D Line considerably in the offseason, and drafted a couple stud wide receivers.
guys get injured…young guys take time to develop. its not indicative of a front office failure.
there really were no other options..braylon edwards is a drop machine, and boldin while a gamer is not the true #1 guy you’re talking about.

if the giants go 8-8, which i don’t think will be the case, it won’t be from lack of trying in the offseason.

by cntrlalt on Aug 29, 2009 9:45 PM EDT up reply actions

Not one?

We didn’t address any of the issues that hurt us at the end last year? What were our major problems at the tail end of the season?

Let’s see:

1) Lack of receiving threats behind Burress. We drafted Nicks and Barden, both who have shown immense talent in camp.

2) A diminished pass rush. We have this player named Osi Umenyiora. He didn’t play all of last year. Do you happen to recall that, by chance? We also drafted Clint Sintim, a pass-rushing expert, at LB.

3) General defensive fatigue. Boley, Sintim, Bernard, Umenyiora, Canty. Phillips’ continued development at safety. Thomas’ at corner.

by Caseys Kiss of Death on Aug 29, 2009 9:46 PM EDT up reply actions

Not addressed adequately.

The rookie WR are fine for a possible future. Not for a team that was on the verge of something NOW and may not be again for years to come, as that’s the way it sometimes goes in this game.

The pass rush has been figured out. Sheridan will not be DC next season. New scheme’s needed, more reliance on DB’s.

Yes, I like Sintim, and they do have some fresh talent their.

by ZILLAG on Aug 29, 2009 9:49 PM EDT up reply actions

as JR put it

Gints are a run first team. And defense win championships! I think we addressed those needs and are reinforced.

Based on your knowledge expressed so far

I’m gonna assume that you think the pass rush has been “figured out” because they haven’t tackled Eli in practice yet.

by Caseys Kiss of Death on Aug 29, 2009 9:52 PM EDT up reply actions

i think you need to get your facts straight

the fact is that the giants will be able to ride their number one ranked rushing offense and elite defense to at least 9 or 10 wins, and if all the while eli and the young wr’s get into a rythym, the sky is the limit my friend. i find it hard to believe youre a true giant fan, its like you want them to fail.

well

there’s nothing wrong with being a fan with an eye towards analysis and seeing weaknesses, which every team has.

i mean we’re not the cowboys where the team could be 4-12 and the fans still think they have a shot at the superbowl.

its just that the problems that the giants currently have, namely DLine depth and receivers can’t be attributed to anything the front office has done.

by cntrlalt on Aug 29, 2009 9:56 PM EDT up reply actions

i really doubt

they would have had the cap room for that. boldin was demanding a new contract in any trade that would pay him equal to the top receivers.
if that trade had gone through toomer would still have had to be released, and the draft would have been completely different.

by cntrlalt on Aug 29, 2009 10:00 PM EDT up reply actions

Boldin =......

bulkier Steve Smith. In other words, waste of money and picks (which would have included the pick needed to get Barden).

Also, if Toomer was any slower he’d be running backwards.

GIve it a break. Hixon and Smith and Manningham and the others are ALL quicker and have the ACTUAL ability to get open.

Getting open is a trait that Plax and Toomer lacked for the FACT they were both not quick anymore (or in Plax’s case..never quick, just big.)

Eli needs to get used to his receivers now who can actually get open, that’s all. But getting open is a good thing……..

Complain about things that are actually happening now

not things that happened in the past.

Eli is coming off a 60+% completion season. He’s hit his targets for most of the night, and there have been drops. The INT wasn’t his fault. He should have an extra TD and 90ish yards on the other drop.

He’s checking down VERY nicely, and finding good options.

Man, oh man

We are not used to this kind of negativity around here. You seem like the kind of guy who wants to see the worst in everything. Sadly, you will likely never be happy. You root for a terrific team with four straight playoff appearances and a Super Bowl. Life is good.

by GiantsReignSupreme on Aug 29, 2009 9:56 PM EDT up reply actions

So we've gone now from

Eli is a “problem” with “no accuracy” to “he may not be able to be a completely great quarterback for 2 out of 16 games a year.”

Interesting.

Of course, the real problem is that you’re bringing all this crap up in the midst of a game in which the man has been spot-on on pretty much every single play he’s been involved in. This kind of negativity is not only totally out of place and uncalled for, but its speculation based only on the past, and not what’s going on right in front of you.

by Caseys Kiss of Death on Aug 29, 2009 9:56 PM EDT up reply actions

not to mention

…its only the preseason. when players are back and healthy and the games actually start to matter, then we’ll really be able to judge where this team is at

by GiantsReignSupreme on Aug 29, 2009 9:58 PM EDT up reply actions

Give me a break, Z

Eli was terrific in the first half. You can’t put either drop on him, he was fine. If you can’t see that, you aren’t looking.

by Ed Valentine on Aug 29, 2009 9:51 PM EDT up reply actions

Eli was 4/11. Yes, bad drop by Smith. But Eli isn't getting the ball where it needs to be most of the time.

He’s too high, or just off. It’s him. He’s always been like that, hence the need for a talent like Plax. This will continue to bite us in the ass. Smith, Hixon, Manningham are not taking us anywhere near the promised land.

by ZILLAG on Aug 29, 2009 9:53 PM EDT up reply actions

your Eli stats are wrong

I heard them say he was at least 5 of 12 —-could be more…but he should’ve had 2 of those (not his fault on the drops)

Opus smart , lascivio magis , intereo gauisus...

by 27Tango on Aug 29, 2009 10:00 PM EDT up reply actions

Two drops

so let’s go ahead and give us back the drops. And the yardage that comes with them.

From your 4/11 we instead go 6/11. 83 yards on the Smith dropped-TD. With the TD there, we no longer have the Hixon play though. So no yards, and no catch…but no INT. So he’s 5/10 for 132 yards, 2 TDs, and 0 INTs at the time of your complaint.

A poor 50% completion percentage on a small sample size, and yet still a 135.4 rating.

Poor Eli.

Not a good first half

I know it’s just a preseason game but our D got manhandeld by an awful O with a rookie QB and our WR’s just plain stink especailly in the Redzone. I understand not giving up a lot of players for Edwards or Boldin but why they will regret not siging a vetern like Tory Holt for a year or two or even a second level FA WR like Nate Washington. Eli has no security blanket and it’s obvious. If our D does not play lights out this year the Giants will be fighting for 8 wins this year.

agree: first half was not that great for the D, mistackles on that one play for the Jets TD, goal line stand just missed out.
disagree: we’ll win more games than 8 and the offense will always be run first. Did you see that Eli threw to 7 different receivers that caught the ball. Yes, we had to bad plays by Smith and Hixon, but we’ll survive.

If they play like this in their 6 divsion games they’ll go 1-5 or 2-4 at best. If the G-Men played in any other division in the NFC I would say on talent alone they should win 10 games but they need to button it up before opening day.

For the second consecutive week the Giants starters have not looked good. No WR’s have stepped up and the D looks terrible. I say the D looked terrible because the Jets have a rookie QB and no WR’s. D hasn't been great

but the pass rush was there on the aborted play, and Sanchez made a nice (lucky?) throw. The tackling on the other end was the big problem.

The other TD was given up on an extremely short field (NOT Eli’s fault), and was almost stopped.

It could be a lot worse.

McNabb & Romo

these guys live on these types of Broken plays remeber 3rd & 18 in the playoffs last year with Kiwi and Tuck all over McNabb. Our O will struggle big time this year because of the lack of legitimit starters at WR let alone a #1 so the D can not afford to give up these types of plays like we did against Philly, Dallas, & Carolina at the end of last year.

Question: do you think Rex Ryan wants his O to drive the ball down, but Coughlin doesn't --

— because it’s simply preseason? The Jets have moved the ball on the Giants D. The Giants O, first drive notwithstanding and a PI call on the second, have not moved the ball with their first team O and if that doesn’t raise a red flag then you are somewhat blind.

I think

it’s preseason.

And I think, first and foremost, Coughlin is interested in keeping players healthy, rotating in certain players, checking to see what works and what doesn’t, running schemes outside the regular season playbook to see what works, seeing what units work together most cohesively, and giving regulars an adequate amount of rest.

And hey, if they happen to score a couple points along the way, that’s fine, too.

Also…we’ve done a pretty nice job of avoiding penalties with the first unit. I assume you, as a Jets fan, would be forfeiting the season right now based on the six thousand encroachment and PI calls this game?

by Caseys Kiss of Death on Aug 29, 2009 10:20 PM EDT up reply actions

answer: possibly

coughlin and ryan could have completely different goals for this game besides winning. ryan doesn’t have the same job security, and he’s installing a brand new system onto this team. its very possible that the jets are running a regular season game plan while the giants are running a bare bones game plan designed to keep their guys healthy while giving them easy reps.

Have to disagree about Manningham

he does not run good routes, both TC and Eli have said it during training camp. Sure he’s talented thats why he’s getting a good look but on most incompletions you can see Eli and KG coaching him up on the sideline. Thats a big reason why he fell into the 3rd round when he had first round talent

by Landeta on Aug 29, 2009 11:03 PM EDT up reply actions

That is only describing half the story

he makes mental mistakes, but Eli also said he gets out of his cuts faster than anybody he has thrown to before, i.e. the play in the game last week. He fell into the third round because he was a pothead, hopefully he cleaned that up.

if you have any doubts about the preseason M.O., look no further than the two point conversion play.

It was not called-for at all to go for it in that situation. But apparently Tom doesn’t put the same emphasis on POINTS and WINNING that you do in the preseason. He ran the play to, essentially, give the Giants an extra offensive play…not because it would give him the lead. Because THAT’S how you play the preseason.

by Caseys Kiss of Death on Aug 29, 2009 11:06 PM EDT reply actions

Don't be so tough on Zilag

Like I said earlier I could care less if they win the game, I understand they are going to go for two and go for it on fourth down and not play it exactly like they would in a regular season game but I do want the starters to look solid and I’m sorry the Defense was bad tonight against a bad offensive team. The D is a big concern for me. They played poorley down the stretch last year letting up a lot of big plays and it has continued into this preseason. Eli and the run game looked fine but the D is major concern because we will have to rely on them and until Nicks’s 4th quarter display the WR’s have SUCKED! Like I said I hope I’m wrong but the D has played poorley and thats a fact.

With 3 catches in garbage time

of a preseason game Nicks has outplayed any of the Giants vetern WR’s. I hope he’s the real deal because most of other WR’s (besides Hixon & Smith) would not make an NFL team.

What's up with Barden

Look I liked the pick and I hope he pans out but lets be honest it was a bit of a risk and what has he done other than practice real good, look like Plax in pads, and say the right things in interviews. Look maybee I’m being a little harsh but he did nothing in the preseason games. Just because he looks like Plax does not mean he will be as good as Plax. Why do you guys love him so much on this site. He’s a rookie and it will take time but if he was not a third round pick this year based on what he did in preseason games no he would not make an NFL team with good depth at WR. It seems as if he is a year or two away from making a significant contribution.

by Landeta on Aug 29, 2009 11:20 PM EDT up reply actions

everyone knows

that it takes at least a good 2 or 3 years for WRs to get acclimated to the difference from college to the NFL game (with few exceptions)… he obviously has SOME skills and warrants to make any other NFL team. Once again, it’s your statement that he will not be able to make another NFL team, that is sooooo far fetch – that it makes it hard for anyone on here to really take you seriously as to having some intelligence about the NFL, just based on some of your comments

Take it easy

I know it takes a few years for WR’s to develop but it’s also a fact most don’t develop see Sinorice Moss, Freddie Mitchel, Troy Williamson, Mike Williams, Charles Rogers, Kevin Dyson. I said that in my post my point was that in the live action games he did very little and I don’t think he’ll make a big contribution this year but a lot of fans on this sight talk him up like he’s going to step in and be Plaxico in a year or two and I’m not sure about that. I SAID if it was his third year and did what he did this preseason he would be cut and the only reason he will make the team is BECUSE of his future potential so for 2009 I think unless there are major injuries to the WR position he will be a non-factor. Why do have to insult my football intellegence just for disagreeing with you about a third round pick from Cal-Poly.

by Landeta on Aug 29, 2009 11:40 PM EDT up reply actions

Hixon ran a great route

against the Eagles in December but he dropped the ball so the Eagles continued to stack the Box in the Playoffs. Your’re right Smith has run some good deep routes but until these guys catch a few no DC will loose sleep over these guys. It’s a little easier to catch underneath stuff than the deep stuff so Smitty needs to work on that because he’s our best bet to be a quality reciver this year.

by Landeta on Aug 29, 2009 11:25 PM EDT up reply actions

Smith drops one ball

and all of a sudden, you’re blowing him up to some huge issue.

He’s got GREAT hands. Everything thrown to him sticks.

Yeah, it was an ugly drop…but in his young career, that’s the exception…not the rule. Don’t make this something it’s not.

by Caseys Kiss of Death on Aug 29, 2009 11:28 PM EDT up reply actions

He dropped a deep balls

against Buffalo in the regular season that would of been a TD in 2007 and dropped a deep ball against the Steelers last year (though he did get hit hard on the play by Clark Haggins) . He also droped a sure first down in the SB in the Red Zone against the PATS that got picked. So this was his third bad drop on a deep ball. Read the article on NJ.com today that talks about the longest reception of his carreer is only 22 yards and he wants to change that.

So what we have, in actuality

is the one deep ball drop against Buffalo, a broken-up play in Pittsburgh, and a drop on a non-deep pass in the Super Bowl.

Sounds like not only a small sample size, but like you’re grasping at pretty much every drop in his Giants career to prove a point, regardless of context, and ignoring all his fine catches.

Read the article in NJ.com

If Mike Garafalo writes an article about him not catching deep balls and Smith in the article admits it’s something that he wants to work on because he did not do a lot of it in college and in his few NFL opportunities has failed to do it I’m going to think it’s a developmental opportunity for him. Then in the same day he gets a chance and drops one I’m going to be a little concerend considering he is our best WR. I did not say he has never made a good catch but usually it’s short stuff over the middle for about 6 to 12 yards nothing that stretches the field. He’s a good possesion WR and I like him a lot but he has not been a deep threat and he admits he needs to work on it. So if Steve Smith says he needs to work on it then I’m going to take his word for it rather than yours, sorry.

by Landeta on Aug 30, 2009 12:03 AM EDT up reply actions

I read the article

you’re not the only one who knows who Garafolo is, I promise.

What I get out of it is Smith giving media-talking-points.

This isn’t my word vs. his. He said what he did because there’s nothing else he CAN say in those situations.

My point isn’t that he shouldn’t work on it. Hell, Randy Moss should always be working on his deep ball skills. It’s that I don’t see a whole lot of reason to think he NEEDS a ton of work…and the samples you used to make your point to the contrary were extremely flawed.

by Caseys Kiss of Death on Aug 30, 2009 12:17 AM EDT up reply actions

What is your problem?

Most people that are not from NJ don’t read the Star-Ledger thus don’t know who MG is. I don’t know what paper you read and I was not challanging your obvious awsome football knowledge I was just referencing an article that pertained to our discussion. Mr. Caseys were all Giant fans here we can differ on opinions. Take it down a notch. The guy has never started as an outside reciver in the NFL and going deep was never his strenghth running good routes and being a possesion guy was. So like I said before if Smith thinks he needs to get better then well I feel the same way. And I have no idea how my samples are flawed he has gotten wide open and the ball thrown to him on deep patterns 4 times in his NFL carrerr (Buff in 07, Pitt 08 Philly playoffs 08 and tonight) and he’s dropped the ball 3 times Eli made an awful throw in the playoff game. He has averaged less than 10 yards a reception in his NFL carreer and only has one TD. I don’t see how those samples are as flawed as “He’s giving the media talking points.”

by Landeta on Aug 30, 2009 12:37 AM EDT up reply actions

Here's the gist of it

1) I am from Jersey

2) Even if I’m not, as a Giants fan, it’d be hard not to know who the #1 Giants media coverage guy is.

3) Don’t quote YPC to me as evidence of anything other than as evidence of how a coach has used someone to this point.

4) 3 dropped deep balls aren’t a sample size.

5) I’m not saying Smith is a good deep-ball man. I’m just not saying he’s a bad one, or that he needs as much work as you do. This is the central point. Not that I’m right and you’re wrong, but rather that I don’t profess to know much about his abilities, whereas you claim he needs work based on an extremely limited set of examples. Why not tell me a minor league prospect needs to work on his contact skills because he struck out in his major league at-bat. Or that a 1st round running back needs to work on ball control because he fumbled his first hand-off.

All I’m saying is that I don’t think he needs to work on his deep-ball abilities any more than any other guy who plays WR. I don’t think it’s an issue. I don’t think it’s a non-issue. And I think coming to the conclusions you have based on your evidence is a poor way to form an opinion. That’s it.

by Caseys Kiss of Death on Aug 30, 2009 12:50 AM EDT up reply actions

Also, the evidence he'll be good at it

is about as strong as the evidence he’ll be bad.

He’ll be bad evidence:
He’s dropped three deep balls in his careers.

He’ll be good evidence: He’s fast enough to get behind coverage, he’s smart, he runs good routes, and he’s always had good hands.

by Caseys Kiss of Death on Aug 30, 2009 12:53 AM EDT up reply actions

I don't get it

He’s never started as an outside WR and most of the patterns he’s run in his first two years was short stuff. If he was that great at it why would they start Hixon not Smith as the outside guy instead of Plaxico? I think it’s a big issue because Plaxico and Amani are not coming back so he needs to step up now and be a depandable all around WR not just a slot 3rd down guy and catching deep balls consistenly is part of that. This was not his first drop of a deep ball it was his third and he was a open all three times. When Tiki fumbled in 03 he worked on it and changed how he carried the ball in 04. Jacobs worked on it from 07 to 08. 0 for 3 in deep routes makes me concerened especially when he’s only played one full season and about 6 games in 07. His carreer has been a small sample and he’s played on the outside a few times but 0 for 3 worries me. Your anology to a baseball player is a lot different. Everybody strikes out in BB from time to time, it’s part of the game but dropping the ball when your wide open a few times in the same situation means you need to get a lot better. I don’t get all over Hixon for dropping that ball against Philly last year beacase he caught several nice deep balls so I know he has that skill set and he has not had that many more opportunities than Smith.

by Landeta on Aug 30, 2009 1:08 AM EDT up reply actions

Dropping 3 balls doesn't make you Troy Williamson

Smith has good hands, so there’s reason to expect him to make a few more of those deep ball catches in the future.

He was on the outside in college but he still never really ran that go route all the time.

When you don’t do it that much in your life, its not a natural thing like it is for a guy like Moss or even Hixon.

Smith WILL catch more than a few bombs this season however.

GODZZIIIIIRRRRRRRRRRRRAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!!!!!!

by FreeBradshaw on Aug 30, 2009 7:30 AM EDT up reply actions

My Point was

Smith has never caught a deep ball in his NFL carrer and has actually dropped the few chances he’s had most of his catches are short over the middle stuff which is a little easier than deep balls.

by Landeta on Aug 29, 2009 11:51 PM EDT up reply actions

I personally think

Smith has already shown he’s a very good possession WR, what everybody forgets is that he also has some speed, and runs great routes…. he doesn’t need to scare anybody, doing that draws attention to you – and DC will start planning around you.
Much better to go under the radar and be sneaky fast…
plus, he hasn’t had the opportunity to play WR on the outside in the NFL…

What it does for Nicks and Carr

even though it’s with 2nd or 3rd stringers,
is it gives them confidence and also shows that he can at least catch the ball :)

Who cares if it's a third string defense

the simple fact is the defense had nothing to do with Nicks’ HANDS on that ball. Sure they let him get open, but it was a GREAT catch away from his body that let him make the play. An IMMENSE positive for him.

Great point

I don’t care who he was playing against Nicks went after the ball and made some nice catches something Manningham and Moss have not done and they’ve had more opportunities. We need a guy that can that. I think after this game Nicks is working with the first team, he needs to develop some Chemistry with Eli. It’ll take time but he’s talented and hopefully his head is screwed on right and he’s smart like Smith and Hixon.

Best performance by Carr

so far. I’m feeling a little better about him as the backup. Good conversation from everyone. Looking forward to the year, and you can’t keep me from that!

From what I saw...

the giants played pretty well, but lost intensity as Smith dropped that deep ball. I don’t know if it was intensity or concentration but you could tell their was a drop off. Sheridan again got conservative after the giants lost the lead. Initially he was doing a great job of bringing pressure but got away from it some what, fortuantley he stepped it up later in the game and it help out immensly. One big thing though…the Giants must do a better job of disgusing the blitz….team are picking it up and adjusting. The jets actually did a great job of that tonight…probably b/c of Ryan.

I still see a problem with the back up Oline guys…

Moss is clearly dropping out of favor with the coaches….

Blackburn played very well. Not sure why Carl Banks was praising D. Clark so much, didn’t see much from him tonight. Chase for SAM!

The WR’s had a bad game but i’m not worried….i counted 4 drops, but i also saw a lot of good things and I think that considering tonight was the first time they got significant action, that’s to be expected.

Great blocking by Barden…bad blocking by Beckum. Gilbride has got to use the right personel with some of these calls.

Nicks played well.

I noticed even when the ball wasn’t going his way Barden was getting open….

KG is not calling Boss’s number enough. But I guess when your trying to find out what you have at WR you should throw to them.

by andiamo708 on Aug 29, 2009 11:42 PM EDT reply actions

Funny you say that about Beckum

I saw one play specifically in which he chipped off a pass rusher to give Carr extra time.

by Caseys Kiss of Death on Aug 30, 2009 12:55 AM EDT up reply actions

A chip block is one thing...

because when he’s used to chip block or help someone out he’s much more sucessful…which was my point about personel.

When you put him on the line and ask him to pick up a DE or a LB by himself it’s a different story. When he was asked to block on the WR screen he was late getting over. I’m not knocking Gilbride but we know Beckum is really an Hback and not a pure TE…if he needs work in one area it’s blocking. Which was to be expected….

by andiamo708 on Aug 30, 2009 1:01 AM EDT up reply actions

IMO

smith is better in the slot…i’m not saying this just b/c of the drop but I feel like if your going to take a shot deep early why not Hixon? Smith actually surprised me when he got behind the secondary … still can’t believe he dropped that pass though. Eli put it right on ’em.

I think the Giants rather have Hixon and Manningham playing outside w/ smith inside. The problem is i don’t think Manningham has earned it yet. Until he does Smith will continue to line up out there.

by andiamo708 on Aug 29, 2009 11:48 PM EDT reply actions

I agree

I think they want Nicks to be the #1. After tonight I hope they give him more of a look because I have not been impressed by Manningham at all. Hixon as an #2 on the outside with Smith in the slot. Lets hope Nicks continues to develop.

by Landeta on Aug 29, 2009 11:54 PM EDT up reply actions

That's the goal...

and I agree, while Manningham has shown signs ….he hasn’t won anything right now…not even the #3 spot. You saw KG giving him an earful when the giants had to settle for a FG. It’s clear Eli is looking to him though in those situations which kinda does show me that he has some confidence in him. He really turned that corner around on the quick slant, that was pretty, but than he drops a pass that hit him in the chest.

Nicks officially surpassed Moss tonight if he hadn’t already. Hagan as well for that matter. Its’ pretty clear Moss and Tyree are gone.

I just really hope they don’t forget about Barden. I know he got a lot of snaps tonight but not a lot of passes. He’s a real weapon.

by andiamo708 on Aug 30, 2009 12:57 AM EDT up reply actions

We better hope K. Philips or

even Michael Johnson don’t get hurt because CC is the #1 backup at saftey. He has not looked good at all. KP looks like he’ll be a player though.
