New York Giants training camp: Friday morning practice report
Here is your Friday morning practice report from New York Giants training camp. Sorry it is a little late, but it has been a busy morning here in Albany.
- The 'Wildcat' offense made an appearance this morning, mostly with rookie running back Andre Brown running it. Never fear, though, the Giants don't plan on using it. They were simply working on defending it, using second and third-team offensive players against the first team defense. Coach Tom Coughlin said, incidentally, that the timing of the work against the Wildcat had nothing to do with the Eagles signing Michael Vick.
We’ve been planning this all spring," Coughlin said. "It’s just (a matter of) when you introduce this because you know you’re going to see it this year. We really didn’t see it last year. We planned to do this and it just so happens that it was inserted for this morning. We’ll continue to do it as we can. As we go along here, we do have reduced practice time once we start playing. But we’ll continue to do that to try to make sure that our guys are ready for it when it occurs.
Brown, incidentally, threw an interception that got drew a very funny comment from Coughlin.
I saw him out here throwing the ball one day, but I’ll give you the rest of that. He said "I’m going to throw the ball" and I said, "Yeah, throw it to the guy in the flat." Did you see where he threw it? Down field and got it picked. Who’s he working for? He could be colorblind, I don’t know.
- Eli Manning did finally sign his contract extension this morning. I will have more on that later if the Giants issue a release.
- Discussing the Vick signing by Philadelphia, safeties coach Dave Merritt called Vick "the ultimate Wildcat quarterback."
- With both Steve Smith (knee) and Sinorice Moss (hamstring) not practicing, Mario Manningham had a nice morning. His best catch was a leaping grab over Terrell Thomas, who had excellent coverage, on a lob from Manning.
- I mentioned Andre Brown before. He seems to have moved ahead of Danny Ware for the third running back slot. He is getting many more reps.
- Best throw of the day was a gorgeous floater from Andre Woodson to Travis Beckum, which dropped beautifully out of the sky into Beckum's arms in between a linebacker and a safety. Might be the best throw I have seen in the entire camp.
- Interesting stuff going on with the linebackers. Coughlin says not to read anything into it, but Danny Clark has been working with the second team, Clint Sintim with the first group, Gerris Wilkinson has been taking some snaps at middle linebacker and Chase Blackburn has been outside lately.
- One interception today, by Bruce Johnson on a ball Manning tried to squeeze inside to Manningham. Also, one bad snap -- zipped a mile over Brown's head by Adam Koets during the 'Wildcat' work.
- Ramses Barden got to take a few snaps today matched up against Terrell Thomas, the biggest and most physical of the Giants' corners. He could not hang on to a beautifully thrown corner route on one play with Thomas draped all over him. On the second play, Thomas jammed him and he never really got into a pass route.
- Domenik Hixon made a tremendous leaping catch on a back shoulder throw by Manning at one point.
- NOTE: Check the 'Transcripts' page. A bit later I will have Coughlin's daily press briefing, a perhaps some other interviews for you.

Sintim!
yes yes yes! take that job away from Clark please.
I would not want to be the giants coaching staff when it comes to making cuts….lets hope we dont’ have to carry two kickers again w/ this groin problem that lawrence is having. we’ll need as much room as possible.
Ed i’m very interested in seeing your 53 man roster.
sunday morning
That’s when I will post my 53-man … and I know it won’t be 100% accurate … just my gut.

oh man
Ed, being that i’m at work and trying to kill as much time as possible i just tried to come up with my own 53 man roster.
forget about it…it’s too hard. I can make 13-14 cuts pretty easily but after that it gets tough. Not to mention the roster at giants.com is not even accurate…they don’t even have Bodiford on the team…so i’m sure they’re missing a few others…which means even more cuts than i initially thought.
how they’re going to cut 25 or so players is beyond me….granted 8 guys can go on the Practice Squad but you can’t put studs on the practice squad b/c you can risk losing them.
this is gonna be tough.
Maybe Tynes will actually not hurt himself
and not require the extra kicker spot.
VICK
Does anyone else see the VIck signing as an act of desperation on the part of the Eagles?
It’s something I would have expected from the Cowboys not the Eagles.
As if McNabb hasn’t had enough distractions to deal with over the years, losing the SB, Rush Limbaugh, T.O; the benching last year, now he has to devote a large portion of every interview he gives from now on talking about Vick and how it affects him.
Oh well I think in the long run it will benefit the Giants.
Nah
Not desperation. Interesting, though.

Vick signing
I have a lot of friends in the Philadelphia area and most of them are for the signing. I too mentioned it reeked of desperation. One was even saying how this could be good to bench McNabb,
I countered that while I by no means am a McNabb fan, he says the right things, plays hurt, and is much more of a leader than Vick. If they think they’re getting the second coming of Randall Cunningham, they will be very, very wrong.
The ironic part of the whole story was Andy Reid said that he’d help keep Vick out of trouble. He did a great job with his kids, didn’t he?
Reid will do nothing of the sort
Vick has a bullseye on his back and he knows damn well he has to be on his best behavior….
I just don’t see how they can bench McNabb, they just re negotiated his contract…
If anything I see them going with the Wild Cat offense on a handful of plays and that’s where Vick will get his time to shine.
I also must disagree about McNabb saying “the right things” last year after they lost to the Cards he completely threw his defense under the bus….extremely classless. And when he was running around last year and constantly pointing to the back of his jersey…oh man, i wanted to break my TV. I didn’t even care about picking up the phone on our sidelines as much as when he would always point to the name on his jersey….McNabb your a vet act like it.
That's unfair to Andy....
Anyone who has kids knows how easy it is to get in the position Andy is in with his son.

Sadly, that's true '57
You can be the best, most attentive parent in the world and things never go smoothly. My kids are 13, 19 and 22 and I know better now than to take cheap shots at people when their kids screw up. I know mine have made their fair share of mistakes, despite mine and my wife’s best efforts.

I agree with you..
You shouldn’t take cheap shots at Andy Reid..I too have 8, 10, 17, 19 and 30 year old sons and also a 4 and 1 year old grandchildren. This day and age makes it difficult to raise them right..Fortunately, I haven’t had to deal with what Andy is dealing with..Plus he lives in Philadelphia which makes it more difficult..Any big city for that matter, produces more bad peer pressure than a country setting..But please..Don’t fault Andy Reid, support him..Raising a child is much more gut-wrenching at times then coaching a football team. He coaches a team we want to beat, but he is also a Father..and I am sure a good one.
all this sweetness is making me sick...
You simply cannot be both a NFL head coach AND a good parent from August to January. So let’s stop the love-fest. The nature of the game sez you are 80% football and 20% sleep when it’s go time. The kids, well, they’ve got moms for that time.
You play to win the game!

Vick won't even be 2nd string QB
Kolb will be. He’s going to be used for gadget plays. Desperation? by signing a 3rd string qb/gadget player?
E-A-G-L-E-S EAGLES!!!
oh for the record
most people are pissed off about the signing. I personally wouldnt have signed him, but what are ya going to do?
E-A-G-L-E-S EAGLES!!!
Yeah
Gotta agree … Vick hasn’t played in 2 years and he’s going to come back and challenge McNabb? No way. He’s in Philly for his athletic ability as a slash-type player in a limited role. The Eagles have nothing to lose here. Football-wise that is.
hey!
you must be lost. this is a giants room. and tell all your friends in Philly. Vick’s an Eagle. Hide your beagle!
LoL
That didn’t take long. It’s go the Eagles plenty of media coverage. Not sure the signing is going to make that much difference to them on the field where it counts. Must think that they have a roster spot to spare … wish it was so easy for the G-Men.
Vick's signing..
He paid his price..a huge one. If he is sincerely remorseful and sheds himself loose of the idiot leeches that helped bring him down, he’ll climb back up the ladder..Hopefully a better person. He is one of 1484 players..a half a dozen out of that number screw up…but they have an obligation reaching the NFL to be role models for our children, not just play a game..they are in the spotlight and need to use it positively. I applaud Philly for stepping forward and giving him a second..We’ll still beat them this year!
