NFL News: Dante Stallworth suspended by NFL for 2009 season

The NFL has announced that Cleveland Browns WR Dante Stallworth has been suspended for the 2009 season without pay after pleading guilty to killing a pedestrian in Miami while driving drunk.

Full story from the New York Daily News

Stallworth should consider himself lucky that Roger Goodell was not the judge at his trial, seeing as how he only served 30 days in jail. The Commish might have brought back throwing people to the lions if he was the judge in this case.

Goodell's decision

Stallworth is very lucky. He should thank his lucky stars that he has the talent to play in the NFL and hire lawyers that could get him to only have to serve a 30-day jail sentence for killing someone, albeit accidentally.

I really hope the players union doesn’t protest this.

He should be banned for life

What a pathetic waste. He should just be happy that he is not in jail.

The real question is

when is Goodell going to do something about andy reid’s kids? They seem headed for the same end and bring the NFL just as much bad PR.

So ... if the Niners are "slotting" Crabtree's deal between B.J. Raji's and Aaron Maybin's ...

… is Goodell “slotting” Plaxico’s suspension between Vick’s and Stallworth’s ?!?

Good for Goodell..

He is trying preserve the great game of football and make sure those players that are blessed with talent to play this game at the NFL level pay the price when they screw up..Unlike MLB comissioners…There are too many talented players screwing everything up, and Roger is going to do everything he can to stop it…It’s like: “Oh look son, that’s the guy who ran somebody over and killed him that just caught that TD pass”…“Oh look son that QB who just ran for thirty yards used to kill doggies” (cause he can’t pass a ball)..Oh look son, major league super stars (supposedly) are having clowns shoot them in the arse with growth hormones, so they can cheat and win..Bud Selig is an idiot. Roger Goodell is a guy who won’t let our last honest game of sports go to ruin…and as far as that comment about Andy Ried’s son goes, that is his problem not Goodell’s problem..Reid is the father..I work my butt off too but I make sure my teens walk the straight and narrow path..I bet I in fact put more hours in then these coaches do..70 – 80 hours a week. They should draft Andy’s son then let Roger deal with him..that’ll straighten him out…In any walk of life you have to put family first. You have surrounded yourself with a staff that can handle a sports team while you deal with more important matters (Family). Tony Dungee is now “mentoring” Michael Vick..He is a great man..but he fell asleep at the wheel with his son…a tragedy..I won’t let work lead to a tragedy with my boys…ask them..The only sport with any integrity left aside from Golf is the NFL..and I applaud Roger Goodell for attempting to keep it that way. Burress deserves what he gets and Stallworth got his…on and on it goes!!

Wait, hold on

He was driving drunk, and killed someone, and the sum total of his punishment was 30 days in jail?

Pardon me while I go bang my head against the wall for a while.

depends

the woman who put my little sister in the hospital for a month, lacerated the majority of her internal organs, leaving her with a 14 inch scar on her stomach and robber her of the ability to ever have children got the DUI 10 classes bull shit. And she knew she was putting a childs life on the line.

That is awful!..I am very sorry to hear that..

If you want to get blasted..call a cab..Bars will do that for you..Why you would want to do that is beyond me, but if that is what you want to do..don’t drive. It doesn’t matter who you are..Someone is going to get hurt or killed.

Oversimplification

That is a gross oversimplification of the facts. By all accounts, the video of the accident (which is still sealed) shows the man running out in front of Stallworth’s car. The fact that Stallworth had a BAC over the legal limit was mostly an extremely unfortunate coincidence, which played a very small role in the accident itself. The reason he only got 30 days was because the court, which had seen the tape, deemed that Stallworth, despite being drunk, was not entirely to blame for the accident.

Yes

..that and the fact he paid the family a fortune supposedly..I’m not saying he a bad guy..but don’t just blink your lights at him..slow down, man!!

by Bobbiblue on Aug 13, 2009 7:17 PM EDT up reply actions

Truth

He did pay them a lot. But his actions over the past 5 months have not reminded me of the actions of a man who wants to push this under the rug. But agreed, he should have been driving slower, and he shouldn’t have gotten in the car in the first place.

Yes

I am sure this will weigh with him his entire life..He’s a good guy, but what is he and guys like that doing to themselves?..Don’t get behind the wheel in that condition..He is not a bad person, just made a bad bad decision, and now a poor guy is dead.

by Bobbiblue on Aug 13, 2009 7:28 PM EDT up reply actions

If he was..

still registering a .126 at 7am…what do you think it was at 3am?..2am? He killed a man..not a squirrel darting out in traffic..a man..He could have slowed down and avoided killing a man. Period.

by Bobbiblue on Aug 13, 2009 7:23 PM EDT up reply actions

What did you see it?

If the video is sealed (what video?), yet he had plenty of time to blink his lights, why not just slow the heck down?..Cars have brakes…You are over simplifying things..Let’s see I’ll just blink my lights instead of slamming on the “brakes”..You are nuts

by Bobbiblue on Aug 13, 2009 7:32 PM EDT up reply actions

No I didn't see it. Only the judge, family, and lawyers have seen it.

But they’ve talked about it a bunch of times on ESPN and CNN, and I also saw an interview with the prosecutor discussing it. Didn’t mention the lights blinking, and the video was incomplete. True, cars do have brakes. No one said he didn’t slam on the brakes. Last I checked, you use your hands to flash your lights. Doing one doesn’t prevent you from doing the other.

I really hate the fact that I have to be the one defending a drunk driver whose decisions led to the death of an innocent man. Again, I am NOT trying to justify his actions. I cannot be clear enough about that. I was simply trying to add to a discussion which had omitted a number of facts.

Okay peace..

He’s a good kid who messed up..and they did report him telling the police that he said he flashed his lights, he should have jumped on the breaks..if you have time to flash lights you certainly have time to hit the break pedal..bottom-line this kid will have to live with this for the rest of his life..money can’t buy a person out of the shame. and guilt.

The reason he got 30 days was because:

A. He is a celebrity
B. This happened in South Florida, and the justice system here is a joke
C. He paid off the family
D. He is a celebrity

Oversimplification? Hardly. A man got drunk, and got behind the wheel, someone got killed. Think for a minute if it was a member of your family that got run down if you would consider it a “gross oversimplification of the facts”

Yes the justice system down here..

Is in fact a joke.. Let’s think about it .“.126?”..at 7am?..and a guy rushing to get home to his family dies?..and the drunk gets off for money and celebrity status?..That is B.S. That sure wouldn’t be the case for anyone of us out here on this website..We’d be in jail for a long time…and so what if he wasn’t in a crosswalk..He still would have been runover. Stallworth was dead drunk, what does a crosswalk have to do with anything? We all don’t always use crosswalks to get across a street..and we all don’t expect someone being .126 at 7am in the morning in a car driving. Horrible.

Michael Vick..

Gets 24 months for killing dogs, and this clown Stallworth gets 30 days for killing a man while driving drunk…Hmmm…I love dogs but Hello? If only the dogs knew how to endorse and cash a check..Maybe Vick would have gotten off as easy.

Hey Ed

I know your not at practice today but if you get your hands on a “run down” please post it….i know it’s only 5:30 but i’m looking on line and cant find anything…i guess this means I’ll have to actually do work for another 30 minutes but even if it’s late please post it if you get it.

Well enough..

..of talking about these foolish players getting themselves in deep trouble..back to football..We have a tremendous majority of good solid kids in this league to be proud of, versus complaining or debating about a few bad apples…The Giants are looking really good thus far, the Eagles are unfortunately dropping like flies, and Dallas is proclaiming they have transformed this year..We’ll see…The thing we have over everyone is the commitment of the owners..Maras vs Jones vs Snyder..I think we win out on that one! Go Giants!
