Should BJ have called out Romo?

Was it really a good idea for Brandon Jacobs to call out Dallas quarterback Tony Romo the other day?

I enjoyed Jacobs' poke at Romo, which is below.

"I don't think he's that good a passer, to be honest with you," Jacobs said of Romo. "His luck will be gone sooner or later. If you were to keep [him] in the pocket he's not that effective."

Maybe, however, it would have been a good idea for Jacobs to keep those thoughts to himself.

Warren Sapp and Steve Wyche discussed Jacobs' comments on NFL Total Access recently.

dammit...

As much as we all like to bash Romo’s play, we all know the guy is as slippery as they get back there and is a very dangerous QB.

I guess its kinda OK to be throwing up bulletin board stuff now rather than gameday week, so I have no problem with it.

I know they play them week 2, but I think that opening up that new pile of a stadium should give them enough modivation.

BTW, I can’t wait for week 2 of the season. Week 1, preseason, OK. Week 2, destroying Jerry’s team in their new house…..I almost want to get the brews out now for the game.

I agree with that sentiment Free

If it was the week leading up to the game, then I would have been upset with him. Right now? Eh.

If Romo had a huge mouth he would say:

“I don’t think he’s that good a back, to be honest with you,” Romo said of Jacobs. “His luck will be gone sooner or later. If his OLine weren’t as good of a run blocking unit, he would be a china doll.”

Amen, our team seems to be focused… And that’s a change.

"If", Romo had a huge mouth?

He probably wouldn’t know what to do with it! He (Romo) has put up decent stats, but what is it worth at the end? Not a darn thing if your objective is to win a SB! He has had all the necessary players around himself to achieve this but to no avail. Step up, or remain silent! Which is what the rest of the East or league has done.

Until Romo proves to be a leader, proves he can win under pressure, then up until this point, he should remain silent! It’s not like Jacobs was commenting on a future HOF’er.

One of those overrating QBs in important games, uh?

You raise one Romo and I raise one Brad Johnson, one Trent Dilfer and one Eli Manning.

The common denominator with all those guys? They have rings and they weren’t on the top 2 reasons behind their team titles.

Oh, and just because I’m predicting the type of response that this comment will generate around here, my top 2 reasons behind the Giants run:

1. D.
2. Running game.

QBs don’t win big games by themselves, they may be of help, but that’s it.

I'll give you #1

but the run game wasn’t too effective in the Super Bowl. We only averaged 3.5 YPC and finished under 100 yards on the game. If you wanna say the run game got us there, sure, but w/o Eli the Giants don’t win that football game.

That said, I HATE using the “he hasn’t won the big one yet” argument with Romo, b/c he’s only entering his 3rd full season as Cowboys QB, which was the same season Eli won his ring.

by cjmulrain on Jul 11, 2009 5:10 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Give me #2, too

Regular season average number of carries per game? 27.

Number of carries in the Super Bowl? 26.

As an BEast fan I can tell you, we’re more affraid of the combined efforts of Diehl, O’Hara and Snee than of what Eli is capable of doing. And most teams play them accordingly.

BTW, if you don’t want to give me the number 2, then what do you think of what I believe was your team number 3? They played with attitude, they never surrendered and that showed, your team second half against our team and the late catch against the Patriots are 2 examples of this.

my bad

I re-read your post and you said “the run” not “the Super Bowl.” Like I said, yea the whole run to the Bowl was backed by the run game, but the Pats were pretty effective shutting it down in the Super Bowl, and it was Eli who led us down the field for both TD’s late in the game.

Any thoughts

Countless comments have been made about how less effective Manning is without Burress. Any thoughts about Romo without TO?

by Ozzle on Jul 12, 2009 12:06 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Not from me

I actually believe that they will be able, it’s going to be though, they (and the coaches) will have to find a way to replace their production as they are both able QBs.

Romo without T.O.

T.O. has been a production machine for most of his career, but last year saw a significant drop off in his efficiency. Of the 139 passes thrown his way, he only caught 69 for a reception percentage of 49%, ranking him lowest among the 30 top receivers in the NFL.

In 06 and 07, Romo posted very nice numbers because of T.O., in 08 Romo maintained his numbers despite T.O. Here’s a breakdown of Romo’s Passer ratings with and without T.O.’s figures (taken from profootballfocus.com):

Romo 07: …………..97.4
Rom 07 ex T.O.: …..93.8

Romo 08:…………..91.4
Romo 08 ex T.O.:….95.5

Almost more importantly, in 2008, 8 of the 14 interceptions Romo threw were thrown in T.O.‘s direction, in 07 only 4 of Romo’s 19 interceptions were thrown T.O.‘s way. Call it declining speed on T.O.’s part or Romo ‘forcing’ throws to T.O, whatever, this is just not acceptable.

For all T.O. apologists, the numbers have been purged of the 3-game Brad Johnson / Brooks Bollinger fiasco in 08.

We all know...

that Dallas has been one of the most (if not the most) overrated teams in the NFL for the past couple of years. And Tony Romo, for as dangerous as you might think he is, has arguably been the most overrated QB for quite some time now, too. Let’s face it, the man is a master choke artist. I definitely agree with Brandon’s comments. Was it good for him to come out and say it? Sure, why not. ESPN will never admit it, so it’s refreshing to see at least one person who is unwilling to kiss the @$$ of Mexico’s Team.

As a fan, this is what I want to see. I wholeheartedly hate the Cowboys, like all good Giant fans do. Between Justin Tuck, Michael Strahan, Antonio Pierce, and now B.J., I’m glad to see that my favorite NFC team shares my sentiments. Frankly, I’d be more upset if 27 came out and praised Romo. Thankfully, the Big Blue defense is exceptionally beastly this year, so I highly doubt that Romo will get the chance to prove Brandon wrong.

I love this idea that he chokes in big games. The thing is people only remember the big games we did not win, and whether he plays well or not he “choked” If you can agree that there are “big games” played before the playoffs than he has won plenty of them and played really well in the process.

Carolina in ‘06 (first game starting-pretty big game): 24/36 270yds 1/1 W:35-14
Indianapolis in ’06 (Indy 9-0 at this point): 19/23 226 0/1 W: 21-14
Chicago in ’07 (Defending NFC Champions on the road): 22/35 329yds 2/1 W: 34-10
Giants in’07 (A NY win would have put the Giants just 1 game back on the road): 20/28 247 yds 4/1 W: 31-20
Green Bay in ’07 (Playing for #1 Seed in NFC): 19/30 309 yds 4/1 W: 37-27

These are just a few games that at the time were considered BIG games.

I think that most are referring to playoffs when mentioning “big” games.

by njgiant on Jul 14, 2009 7:48 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

they most certainly are talking about playoff games, but my point is that there are plenty of “big” games throughout the season, ones that are talked about prior to the contest as being very important for one reason or another and Romo has played exceptionally well in many of them, but everyone conveniently forgets about those when talking about his “big games woes”

by sduncan24 on Jul 14, 2009 3:54 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

tony romo is way overrated. he has NEVER won a big game and he dose not make good decisions in big spots. he got lit up in the final game last year vs the eagles.

I actually disagree with Brandon

I don’t have a problem with him calling romo out.. but i think Romo’s fundamental issue is the fact that turns the ball over too much. Romo is accurate, he can make a variety of throws and he gets the ball off quickly. Those are all signs of a good passer. Romo just doesn’t seem to have that killer instinct that he can command a huddle.

Romo=Bad??

how can you say that Romo is bad because he hasnt won the SB??? Many great players dont win superbowls, strahan almost didnt. To say that Romo has the neccessary players around him is completly wrong. TO- a good player but too in love with himself to ever be Romo’s reliable reciever. Romo has never won a superbowl because in the seasons he has started for the Boyz, they have been ineffective. If the Cowboys manage to sort out the players around Romo, he will win a Super Bowl and us loyal Big Blue supporters will be cursing his name.

BJ can call out Romo all he wants, but he should get his facts straight

Romo 2008 stats

……………..Inside……Ouside
……………..Pocket……Pocket

Comp.% ……63.1………50.0
Yards……….3010……….438
TD/INT……..23-12……….3-2
Rating……….93.9………75.9

He's just going by what the Giants do to him

Not overall stats.

Anyone who watches the Gints and Cowboys games know that when Romo is forced to stay in the pocket he’s as good as roadkill.

The thing is he’s as slippery as a wet noodle back there pause. Romo does like 85% of his damage agains teh Giants out of the pocket.

That’s why these comments are just matter of fact, they don’t really say anything. Everyone knows that when Romo is out of the pocket against the Giants (not even necessarily ‘out of the pocket’ either, simply evading the rush), is when he’s a pain in the ass.

I really can’t see how they hurt or help anyone. If anything they help the Giants. Cuz Id love to see the Cowboys try and keep Romo in the pocket for as long as possible. That will allow the 3 Amigos’ to TEE OFF on Mr. Simpson.

That is the point, it is not keeping him in the pocket or flushing him out, it is that he is extremely good at evading the pass rush. I think your stat of 85% is way off base and I would love to see some stats to back that one up. The fact is he is 4-1 vs Vagiants and has posted great numbers. He apprears to be pretty “effective” to me.

caling out romo

maybe i’m waaaay old school, but the way i was taught was:YOU DON’T TALK TRASH UNTIL THE GAME IS OVER!this way,you don’t put bulletin board material up for your opponents.gee,i seem to remember back in 06’,guys on the giants were flapping their gumms every week, and it always seemed to bite them in the ass the next weekend.when are these guys going to learn their lesson,or are us fans doomed to listen to this garbage?
