Wednesday Walk Around the NFL: 7.1.09

Good Morning Giants fans, and Happy July! It's almost time for training camp. In the meantime, here are some of the stories making news around the NFL:
- Looks like the NFL draft may be starting a little later next year.
- The Fifth Down has come up with what it thinks is a better alternative to decide Overtime in the NFL. Pretty interesting scenarios.
- Dante Stallworth had marijuana in his system when he ran over that guy and killed him in Miami. You remember, the one he got 30 days for.
- Pete Prisco says the Lions shouldn't waste any time getting Matt Stafford's career underway.
- Steve Wyche from NFL.com says that players attending the rookie symposium have plenty of recent events to learn from.
- Interesting article from the National Football Post on the path to becoming an agent.
- The Packers have 15 players whose contracts will be up at the end of the season.
Just FYI, Blueshirt Banter Radio returns tonight at 7:30 PM, for a 90 minute show. We'll be talking about the Rangers, the NHL Draft, the first day of free agency, and the big Scott Gomez trade.
Have a very Happy and Safe Independence Day!

Overtime
That silent auction idea sounds very interesting, but I doubt the NFL would ever take anyone else’s advice.
not trying to be a troll- just want to talk football.
These headlines struck me as very interesting. I think the overtime idea is stupid. What if both coaches pick the same yardline? what if they both pick the 1 yd line? i just see many fallacies with that. I just think it would add a mental dynamic into the game that is just kind of… i dunno… not footbally. People will blame coaches for being too conservative, others too aggressive… there’s so many better ways to do overtime than that. so many.
Also, with stallworth… it’s terrible that he killed a guy, it was absolutely irresponsible, but it was an accident. Also, it shows a lot of character to stay at the scene of a crime where is would be easier for him to drive away and have nobody know (i have heard many cases of that.) 30 days in jail is very lenient, but the victim’s family was ok with it, therefore we should all be ok with it. The familiy matters the most. Secondly, weed stays in your system for up to 30 days… i imagine an athlete of his caliber with such little body fat…. 10 days. Point being, it doesn’t necessarily mean he was drunk and high while he struck that man.

As with a lot of things it's the "slippery slope"
Though it seems logical that the families benefit more from a cash settlement than prison time for the offender the real question here is equal justice. It hardly seems fair that someone who breaks the law and happens to be wealthy can avoid jail by buying his way out. It just seems like a bad idea to me.
Take the case of Ted Kennedy, who paid off the family of Mary Jo Kopechne and avoided prison time because he had the money and power to do it. Any other poor slob would still be in jail for that. I think the law in Florida should be considered unconstitutional because it provides unequal justice. If you have money you can avoid the punishments? Where does that lead us?

Dude WAS drunk
Dude chose to drive with alcohol in his sytem, and HE KILLED SOMEONE. 30 days for that is downright laughable, and only happened because he had money. Regular Joes get YEARS for the same scenario, and it is pathetic that you can just buy/influence your way out of trouble in the US.
i think
the circumstances of the guys death (ran in front of the car) did and should have played a part in the ajudication of the case. Donte Stallworth is by all accounts a good guy, I think the sentence was fair. I think the fact that he didn’t leave the scene also played a role in it.

I am a great guy
I hope if I ever do something as stupid as drive drunk and hit a guy who is on the road (rightly or wrongly) that I get off based on my nice guy personality. 30 days for killing another human being after making a choice to drink all night and then drive? Are you defending that as an honest to goodness proper sentencing? Unbelievable. I guess driving drunk is viewed differently in the USA, because the amount of apologists for Stallworth is quite high.
Gomez
is a benedict arnold.. taking the money to play in new york rather than trying to win another cup across the hudson.

Overtime
A simple solution: Start with a shortened period, say 10 minutes(or less) long. Play the period in its entirety. If the game remains tied, regardless of any scoring during the extra period, the game proceeds into overtime, say of another 10-minute length, during which the sudden death format would prevail. After the final 10 minutes, the game is booked as a tie. This would not lengthen the game too terribly, if at all, and everybody will feel as though the system played fairly.
all too complicated...
The best idea would be to simply ensure that each team has one offensive possession. Win the flip, you get the ball first and get to set the tone. If you fumble your kickoff, you’re S.O.L.
Also it’d sometimes be on the coach to decide whether to play for a tie… if the other team gets a FG first, for example…
You play to win the game!
