Is pro football a menace to its players?

About 78% of pro football players, two years after retirement, are bankrupt, unemployed or divorced.

I neglected to include the data source:

The Retired Players Assn. It’s obviously a tool for negotiating better deals for retirees.
Overall the stats are disquieting, but consider what unemployed might mean. Some of those in the category could be those who have enough to never have to work again, but surely not that high a figure? How about divorce? How does it differ from the figure for the population at large? It looks like it could be smaller. Etc., etc. Anyway, I thought it might be of interest to some, particularly the BBV stat gurus.
