Plaxico Was an All Time Giant Great
One of the greatest
Was Plaxico Burress the greatest Giants Receiver of the last 40 years? I say absolutely yes. No WR wearing the Big Blue dominated a game like he did at his best. He was at least the best since Homer Jones. He would get double and triple teamed, he opened up running lanes with the defense swarming on him, he opened up passing routes for the other receivers and the TE. And whenever he was single-covered, he was money for a TD.
We're going to miss him very much. The offense crumbled after he left last year.

Come on Joe, a little respect for the "idiot"
“Wow That last line is super distasteful.
Get a grip man, this is life and death. Football is just a game! I’m glad you’re in the minority on this one!”
Those were your words when a Giants fan posted we should thank Jim Johnson for our Superbowl win. This was a post that showed no disrespect to Jim Johnson or his cancer situation.
While taking an unregistered, loaded weapon in a nightclub was an idiot move, no one should be happy about someone shooting themselves. Not trying to compare the two situations because the only comparison is that lives are/were involved and you posted yourself that “Football is just a game!”.
I hope that there aren’t any Bengal fans “happy” that Donte Stallworth was drinking and driving!

I see your point
but there is a significant difference between a responsible, respected individual is suffering badly with cancer and can’t perform his job and when a multi-millionaire football player goes to a club with an unregistered gun and idiotically shoots himself in the leg (which proved not to be a serious injury at all).
I would be upset at Joe_D if plaxico was in the hospital recovering from blood loss, couldn’t play football anymore, or it wasn’t his fault…. but he’s 100% fine. I think we can all laugh at it by now. I’m sure your fellow giants fans have said worse things about plaxico’s incident.

This is why I like posting on this site,
Just because we’re Giants’ fans doesn’t mean we have to agree on everything. We can agree to disagree and in this case, some will agree with the green guys, I have no problems with that. IMO, I think it’s tasteless to say that you’re “happy” that someone shot himself (regardless of the severity of the injury). I can understand a fan being “happy” that his rival’s top threat is gone, but being “happy” that someone was shot in the process is not cool IMO.

Thug
–noun 1. a cruel or vicious ruffian, robber, or murderer.
I really don’t think that Plax qualifies for the “thug” moniker. Look, the guy was late for meetings, didn’t give 100% on every play and took an unregistered gun to a club…..all stupid things, but thug is a bit over the top. I’m sure he had no intentions of using the gun on anyone especially himself. He probably thought he was protecting himself, remember, Steve Smith was robbed at gunpoint days earlier.
Like before, we’ll agree to disagree and call this one a draw.

Amani Toomer
In the Michael Strahan commentary for XLII, he calls Amani Toomer “G.O.A.T.” short for “greatest of all time.” That’s good enough for me. And isn’t he our all-time leader in receptions? To me, Burress’ tenure is just to short for him to be in the discussion. It’s be like calling Pau Gasol one of the greatest Lakers.
You play to win the game!
by Simms-McConkey on Jun 19, 2009 10:22 AM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Agreed
Burress’ time in NY was too short to be considered on any all-time Giants list. Yes he was a great help in the Superbowl season but he also had more than a few moments on the field when all Giants fans hated him. I’m not talking about his play, I mean his attitude.

Exactly, longevity with success and accomplishments leads to team greatness
I appreciated everything Plax did do for the Giants, but his career as a Giant was moreless short lived. Only for his own infamous doing’s, which wasn’t so great. When i think of all-time greats in particular, like the Giants: Simms, Taylor, Bavaro, Strahan or even Tiki come to mind. Other greats that come to mind would be like Montana, Rice, Largent, Monk and Barry Sanders, but you could go on.
Since the inception of free agency, it is hard to fully finish out a career where it started. As some of these players did finish elsewhere, it’s what they accomplished (where they were) for a long time. I’m more of a traditionalist with all-time great players list. I like knowing that they (the players) were hand picked by the Giants and ended here also. Then, if need be, disect the remaining part time Giants!

AND
Toomer turned that short route against the Cowboys into a breakaway touchdown in the playoffs. That will forever be my mental image of Amani “it’s not a” Toomer.
You play to win the game!
by Simms-McConkey on Jun 19, 2009 2:05 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
No
He’ll at least be 2nd best. Amani Toomer is the best right now, its really not close. I guess people forget how big he was for the Giants last SB appearance, but he was most definitely as big a part of that offense as anyone.
Plaxico had a few great years with the Gints. I try not to bash him but its sometimes hard not to.
He would have been remembered more for his boneheaded stuff anyway, regardless of whether he shot himself. Yes that GW TD was nice (not really like he made some Santonio Holmes like catch either) and of course that Packers game will forever go down as one of the best playoff performances.
Still, Toomer has the numbers, the tenure. I don’t like how they sent him off, but it really had no chance to be pretty. It really was time to move on, but Toomer still thinks he’s got some years (still not signed either).
I’ll always wish Amani the best.
I think the Giants are going in the right direction tho starting anew with the WR corp.

I'm gonna have to disagree with some of the commenters here
longevity is great, but I’d prefer short term dominance. Would you prefer Don Sutton or Sandy Koufax? Tom Glavine or Pedro Martinez? Steve Young or Vinny Testaverde? I love Amani, but Plax did more to help the Giants win when he was on the field than Amani ever did.
by cjmulrain on Jun 19, 2009 4:16 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
I disagree
Amani never had a guy like Plax on the other side, and they went to the Bowl with that team (tho they got pounded by the Ravens. I mean in 2001 they had Jurevicious, and Ike Hilliard, but Dan Campbell as their TE?
Amani had as good a season as Plax when they went to the bowl that year too. Amani’s best season > Plax’s best season (stats wise.).
Amani had more 1000 yard seasons too
The Giants when they had Plaxico had more offensive weapons, including Amani and Jeremy Shockey.
Plax was great in his limited time. The stats show he was very good, but Amani Toomer was just as good in the middle of his career.
No way Plax is the better all time Giant. Not a chance.
by FreeBradshaw on Jun 20, 2009 7:49 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
but was Plax an all-time Giant great?
Hell yea he was. You aren’t that big a part of a SB team, and realyl just the team’s success in general the way he was, and not be one of the best players in team history.
But Giants Best WR ever? Nope, Toomer will hold that for now. I don’t really know about Homer Jones other than he used to be the Giants all time best WR.
Plax will settle for 2nd or 3rd best, depending on what people think of Homer Jones’ career.
by FreeBradshaw on Jun 20, 2009 7:58 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Agreed...
You make good points about Plax opening up Toomer for success with all of the defenses focus going on Plax that Toomer was able to go up against the 2nd best CB that the Defense had.
Also I think of the injury that Plax played wit the entire 2007 season and into the playoffs, I will always remember that.
Plax will always be in the discussion but it has to be Toomer as the best Giant WR of all time.

The Great Homer Jones
He was the last Giant WR to make All Pro
Check out his stats on-line
He was a beast in 1967 – 49 catches, 1209 yards, an average of 24.7 !!! 13 TDs
He was Pro Bowl in 1967 ansd 1968 – no Giant WR has made the Pro Bowl since, and that is one very true and very amazing statement

Not the longest career, but the best
No Giant WR dominated the games he was in like Plax. Many of the posters here have correctly mentioned that Plax had a short career, certainly way short as compared to Armani T. But quarter for quarter, game for game, TD for TD, Plax was the best Giant WR I have ever seen over the last 40 years. He could bust games wide open. Amani is a great guy, a gentleman and all that, but I’m not confusing longevity with impact. Plax was the highest impact Giant WR of my lifetime.

Good riddance
to a selfish guy and a selfish player. Look how the steelers have won w/out him..i do think we had a chance with him in the line up this year but w/out him there was no back up plan. Jerry Reese is a smart guy and has covered the team well. We will have an awesome defense and a solid offense to match. i would rather go into the season with a true number 1 but there is enough talent for Eli.
by JonLands on Jun 19, 2009 10:30 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
He was a key part of the offence
which was proven when the G-Men crumbled without him. Reese has done good job of covering the team like JonLands says, but it’s not hard to fix a problem after it’s needed. Plax was needed for the team to be successful in 2009 and when he shot himself we had no option who could fit the playbook. I blame the post-plax situation on Reese. In terms of greatest Giants reciever in the last 40 years, there’s no doubt in my mind that it’s Toomer. Plax was a great reciever but he wasn’t with NY long enough to be considered a true GIANTS man, otherwise i’d agree with celerino sanchez.
by ChuckyofNorris on Jun 20, 2009 12:47 AM EDT reply actions 0 recs
The Greatest or the best?
If you changed the adjective to “best” - who was better than Plax at scaring a defense, altering their schemes, and changing the game?
by celerino sanchez on Jun 20, 2009 11:29 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
that's true
I really don’t have much doubt as to who was the most talented WR in Giants history. That’s really not a question cuz Plax had as much natural ability as anyone.
In the end that didn’t matter cuz you need your brain too. Cheddar Bob incident aside, the guy would always not be involved once he didn’t get in the offense from the start of the game.
Plax COULD HAVE BEEN the greatest of all Giants WR.
So he wasn’t the greatest Giant WR, he was the best tho. Id take him over any other GIants WR in their history, that’s for sure.
by FreeBradshaw on Jun 20, 2009 12:01 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
You say he was the best
but what about was th best. He didn’t have the best catch (TYREE), or the best loyalty (TOOMER). So he was good at drawing double coverage and making some good plays, but none of these plays were the best, and he only played when he wanted to.
by ChuckyofNorris on Jun 20, 2009 7:27 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Don't let the facts confuse you
Plax made the Giants a better team because of all the defensive attention he drew. If he drew double coverage (and he almost always did), it was always 9 defenders against the other ten Giants. And think of all the HUGE plays Plax made even when he was double-covered.
An individual catch or “loyalty” are irrelevant to this point. My point is he was the BEST player the Giants ever lined up as a WR.
I like Toomer a lot, he is a classy decent guy that usually has a steady game, and makes a few big catches here and there. I’m excited about the young studs too, maybe they will excel. Maybe Sinorice or Mario or Hixon will have a breakout year.
But I’ll take Plax and all he brought to Game Day any Day.
What a waste that he self-destructed and blew up what could have been a wonderful Giant career

Objectively – he has to be. I’ve been watching those blue helmets for 4 decades and no one changed opposing defenses and gave the Giants “O” more benefits than when that skinny guy lined up wide. Let’s be fair and honest about it, between the lines, he was the greatest and the best.

This is a good argument
As much as i’m sick of hearing the bastard’s name.. He is definitely the most dominant wide receiver the Giants have had but that isn’t exactly the most distinguished list. Plax in 2005-2007 was a better weapon than Amani ever was. I mean the argument for the last 40 years is Plax, Amani and Mark Ingram? The Giants haven’t had good enough receivers post merger to make this conversation remotely interesting.

One way to decide
If Toomer and Plax were coming out of the same draft, who would you take — knowing that Plax was going to be a bit of a creep?
When you look at players, obviously, you have to consider the entire person, because what they do off the field affects what happens on it. I’d draft Toomer without too much consideration, knowing I’d get a long, great career out of him without any considerable off-field blowups.
I think it’s poll time!

depends
if its the first round? I think that if I know that Toomer’s at least gonna be a NFL WR, I take him in the first round given his size and he used to be real fast too.
Anywhere from the 2nd on down? Id take Burress. You see it all the time that players that may have at least first round talent drop in the draft cuz they are idiots.

If you needed one receiver for the biggest game of your life, who would you rather have lining up wide?
by celerino sanchez on Jun 22, 2009 5:11 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Plax for sure but
what a selfish loser who only went full out when it was good for him. He was a cancer to this team and any other he is eventually on. I hope these rooks pan out but i dont think so. Need a stud receiver who is a team guy. is there one? Moss? C johnson? Boldin? I thinl Fitzgerald is the one and only. Mario Manningham? Sinorice Moss? They need help fast. Dont blow this op with this crazy defense. One sure handed guy can do the trick here. Steve Smith and Hixon are not enough.

What a great topic- talking about immense talent with a flawed character. Let’s not forget the All Time poster boy for this condition -Orenthal James Simpson.
