Brandon Marshall: Should we try to get him?

With the Broncos recently losing their franchise quarterback, you would've thought that off-season commotion for them would be finally over. It appears, however, that Josh McDaniels does not mind rubbing more than one franchise player the wrong way.

Now, I know the Giants are "happy" with their wide receiver situation but getting a guy like Brandon Marshall, despite off field antics, would sure be an interesting idea. According to the Denver Post, this might very well be a serious situation, as Marshall was seen leaving "carrying packed boxes."

There is a market for him I am sure but if the Giants were unwilling to trade for Anquan Boldin nor Braylon Edwards, this is an extreme long shot. I threw it out there for kicks, though, so I want to hear your opinion.

Would you like to see the Giants go after Marshall?
Absolutely, he's younger than Boldin and Edwards, and more potential as well!

Are you an idiot! The guy is less talented and more of a problem than Plax! Get REAL!

I don't know

depends on what they’d give up.

Marshall is in that upper echelon of WR. He’s young and much more talented than Boldin, Edwards and even Plax (he’s a whole lot faster).

Id say yes. I don’t know the asking price, but Marshall is a whole lot better prize than Edwards or Boldin would be.

I’ve said all along that I never wanted Edwards, he’s overrated for that one season. And Boldin is a result of a pass happy O, tho he’s still talented he’s not worth the asking price nor the contract.

But Marshall is a top flight WR. I don’t know about his attitude towards teammates or coaches, and that Jay Cutler likes him doesn’t tell me much.

Id assume that Reese will give his political answer if asked this, so Im sure he’ll send out some feelers on the situation.

by FreeBradshaw on Jun 15, 2009 4:07 PM EDT reply actions

The attitude and the cost in terms of players/picks

is the problem.

I actually think that the Giants could give up a guy like Hixon or/and Manningham and a few picks and get something done.

I don’t know what other teams will offer either if this guy is really on the block, but the main team that’s said in this is the Bears, and they really don’t have anything to give up.

Id say that nothing happens with the Giants, but you never know. They signed Chris Canty after all seemed lost on that end, so who knows? If his attitude checks out, then Id be all for it. The guy is a much better talent than anyone the Giants have ever had to this point, including Plaxico.

by FreeBradshaw on Jun 15, 2009 4:10 PM EDT up reply actions

They should at least investigate

He would, on the surface, appear to be a better option than the other two trade targets, perhaps he’d be happier playing with a better, more stable team in NY

Okay, just so I understand it... in your wildest fantasy, you are in hell. And you are co-running a bed and breakfast with the devil.

no way

he is an excellent talent but his baggage is just too much. Other than Plax that team didn’t have too much off the field drama. And with the bright lights of NYC, i smell trouble…it will ruin the chemistry

Marshall

is very talented (top flight) as you say. But I can’t bring myself to think that it is worth the headache that might be brought about by his life choices. He will be in trouble with the law again. We’d be better off to drink a pot or two of coffee, head over to the Falls, and empty our kidneys.
Hopefully the wind will not be blowing in the face of the team that gets him.

We didn't even have a chance for the "perfect season", but we did have the perfect ending.

Not for this at all.

Yeah, he’s a great receiver but he has too much baggage. He’s another guy that could end up in the clink if he keeps abusing the women in his life. He hasn’t been convicted yet but the reports of repeated assaults has to carry some weight. We’re giving thugs a free pass because they can run or catch a ball. Like I said, he’s a great receiver and has not been convicted of anything yet, but if it walks like a duck and quacks like a duck, then it just may be……

by njgiant on Jun 15, 2009 7:52 PM EDT reply actions

a duck

I agree his off the field issues dont seem like they are coming to an end anytime soon – and the New York media would be waiting to jump all over that – our overall team is young – we have no idea what our WRs can do yet – if its a problem – a trade can be made in season – or stick with the picks and let Jerry keep bringing in top NFL talent

alright...

McD had zero to do with this…. BM was signed before McD was hired, this was bound to happen so plz dont try and compare this to the cutler fiasco
a QB who crys and wont play is much different than your WR (who is under contract) wants more money.
now that being said IF marsh was traded to big blue (and right now im under the impression that holding on to him, even to the extent of letting rim ride the pine, is more economically sound) id def want my choice of your DL

Dawkins leaving was kinda sad, and I’ll miss him, but his days on a GOOD defense were numbered.

I can appreciate the loyalty to your team

But if Marshall gets traded, your offense looks like toast. Remember, Orton is behind center now and he’s not a real threat. With Marshall gone, fans will finally have another WR corps to talk about.

Imagine if the Eagles somehow grab him (not likely I grant you)

but imagine it if they did. It would be seriously frightening to see the numbers they could put up with that trio of Jackson, Marshall, and Maclin (assuming he fits into things decently from the get go).

I wish

Edwards and Bolden are model citizens and are great players, but neither of them are Brandon Marshall on the Field he is the closet thing we could get to a player like Plaxico Burress and if we got him Eli would return to the way he was before the shot heard around the tri state area. However, at this point Jerry Reese has made it clear he is not going to go get any receivers for us and we are going to have to live with what we have. The staff has a lot of confidence in the core we have now, so we are going to have to live with it. Overall getting Marshall would basically put us right back into the super bowl, but no one wants that id rather wait few years.

We just rid ourselves of one legal beagle, WHY, bring in another? This team right now has the sense of unity, family and unselfishness. Traits that don’t come to mind with Marshall. Heck, T.O. had/has all the talent in the world, but he’s going onto his 4th team, for good reason!

Lovin it

I love listening to Giant fans who hate on Plaxico saying he was such a problem and we are better off without him before week 12 of last year all Giants fans were in Love with Plax and most wanted Eli’s head. In his many years in the league that was his first off field innocent ever and the best part is he can’t even be suspended by the league becasue this IS his first offense. Last time I checked we won a Super bowl basically riding on his back. Also, im pretty sure as soon as we lost him we lost 4 out of 5 games and Eli was anything but a pro bowler without him. Im pretty sure the Lions have alot of model citizens on their team it looks like that worked out for them. Talent wins football games, and im pretty sure as a fan Id rather see Wins. Marshall might be a Dumb*** off the field, but on it he is a pro bowl talent and he helps his team win. More importantly, I feel like Tom and our staff and get any player on the right track and as long as we are winning no one is going to complain.

Who the FK

cares if he’s more popular? He plays for the cowpies so of course he’ll be more popular.

Im not talking about talent either, cuz Romo does seem like a better version of Jake Plummer, which is a good thing actually. But while Im ok with a guy like Canty on th Gints, a QB? To replace Eli? From the Pies? Nah….!

by FreeBradshaw on Jun 20, 2009 7:40 AM EDT up reply actions

You missed my point

I am saying he has some parallels to Eli, which seem to be coming about in the same general order/manner:

-Started out on a team and took a few nasty knocks
-Has made the play-offs a few times and has flamed out in his appearances
-Had a lot of prima donnas and “me me me” guys to throw to
-The FO is starting to shift the complexion of team by getting rid of said prima donnas

Who knows, maybe we see the Cowboys make a magical run through the play-offs and win a title (makes me want to puke too) with Romo. Just saying they are comparable to a point, though Romo has more popularity is all due to being a Cowboy.

I don't think fans are hating on Plax

As a Giants’ fan, I loved what he meant on the field but now that he’s gone it gets kinda tired hearing how the team or Eli can’t win without him. I truely think that we’ll miss Plax as much as we missed Tiki.

by njgiant on Jun 17, 2009 7:41 AM EDT up reply actions

Exactly

Though Plax will have more of an effect on the offense than Tiki leaving (though it would not have appeared that way at first). Plax is old news now as far as Giants fans are concerned… has been since he was cut as he is no longer our headache as fans of the team.

by brisulph on Jun 17, 2009 7:42 AM EDT up reply actions

It wasn't an off-field innocent

it was an off-field guilty. Look at the post-2000 yanks. You can’t just yank in big-name wack-jobs and expect to win. It’s about the team functioning as a unit, not taking separate cabs to the ballpark. Also, to say we were jockin’ Palx and hating Eli isn’t really very accurate. I’m no big Eli fan, but the reason we were fairly supportive of the Plax-man until the incident was… he hadn’t been a problem or distraction that we knew of. It’s not very perceptive for you & someone else to make this dumb inference: “You liked him when he was good for you / on your team.”

Well, yeah. We like people on our team, when they’re a positive contributing member. If they screw it all up, or go somewhere else, then it’s adios, ex-amigo.

Like the idea

I think Coughlin could handle his problems. If not cut him. Realy he hasn’t been convicted of anything and not to take his side but the girl has gotten back with him after several of the allegations. I don’t quite know whats going on, but if he cleans up his act he is the real deal.

Either way, our team would be filthy nasty with Marshall at WR. With our defense and a dynamic offense it would be a wrap for an NFC East title and a Superbowl run

by JRSu1 on Jun 17, 2009 8:34 AM EDT reply actions

Why should TC be responsible for any players problems?

These players are adults that shouldn’t need 24hr supervision. Look at it this way, whether it’s Plax or Marshall, the fact remains that on any given day, these guy’s could be swayed to the wayward side once again. However severe, not only are they jeopardizing themelves, but their AVAILABILITY, to play! Your moreless hinging your hopes, that they, please stay out of trouble once they leave the facility. Don’t get me wrong, they’re good players on the field, but you cross your fingers that they’ll be on it full time!

It's called money.

Who do you think that girl wants as a boyfriend. Millionaire NFL star or Joe the plumber. Check Kobe’s wife or Cookie. Do you think these females really want to look for a job. It’s probably hard getting out of the lap of luxury. Marshall’s fiance finally had enough but I’ll bet it was a hard choice for her.

by njgiant on Jun 17, 2009 10:16 AM EDT up reply actions

Tough one.

Marshall could surely stretch the field making big plays and/or pulling double coverage leaving 2nd and 3rd looks with man coverage (Look what Marshall did for rookie Eddie Royal).

But I agree with a lot of posters that team chemistry counts for something. And bringing in the next thug/diva who needs ego stroking between plays will not be good for Eli, or the team. Plus it would take more than Manningham or Dixon plus picks to get it done.

It’s a toss up man, and a good reason why a fiery Giants fan like me would be bad at being GM.

If the young receivers and rookies are bumping into each other in their routes we’ll all be like “how the f*** did they think they could win with this crowd?!” And if it does work and we get production then we’ll be like, “see, we don’t need outside talent, we’ll win with our own home grown!”

I’m rooting for scenario B.

by edzilla on Jun 17, 2009 2:20 PM EDT reply actions

ok

There is a difference in saying that Plax is a idiot for what he did and now that he is off the team we can bash him, but a lot of Giant fans are saying we are better off without him and good riddance. Im pretty sure the same team last year was 11-1 with him and 1-4 without him. And we won a super bowl with plax not with Tiki and comparing the two is stupid. Hixon and Smith are no Jacobs and Ward combo thats why we were able to replace Tiki and still play at a high level. Comparing the Giants and Yankees can only go as far as they both are New York teams. Im pretty sure the Giants won a super bowl two years ago with that “Big Name” Plax.

And going back to Eli as a season ticket holder since 1999 trust me when I say Giants fan wanted Eli’s head. We loved him when we were 11-1, but by seasons end we were seeing the old Eli once again.

I expect this year he will have to step up a bit and assist the young WR core. If he can’t do it, well he is never going to get there. This year is the year for him to step up or “aw shucks” it up elsewhere.

by brisulph on Jun 18, 2009 7:52 AM EDT up reply actions

We didn't go 1-4 without plax

Week 13- The WEEKEND plax shot himself we played the redskins and eli posted up 305 yards. how come noone talks about that?

Weeks 14 and 15- then we dropped a game against philly— not uncustomary, we usually split with them plax or no plax, then to the cowboys, same story there,

Week 16- then we beat the second-best team in the NFC in the panthers,

Week 17- then we rested our starters against the vikings and lost by a point

so we went 2-2 in games we actually played and dropped a game against the vikings by 1 point.

I’m sick of all this beat talk on how Eli couldn’t play without Plax. Eagles fan dude— we lost the game against you because Gilbride called a horrible game. The Eagles adjusted and started making alot of short dink-and-dunk passes, Gilbride on the other hand wouldn’t abandon the deep ball. we didn’t try ONE screen pass that entire game, and we didnt convert that 4th and inches b/c gilbride gave the ball to eli instead of hedgecock or brandon jacobs.

Eli’s not “still developing”— and even if he was, we have a lombardi trophy. you have 2 NFC championship rings and have lost more NFC championships than you’ve won. plus Eagles fans wanted mcnabb and andy mcfattyfats head too, but you know, selective memory’s cool…. and trust me Eli will post up ridiculous numbers next season. i can’t believe how cocky eagle fans are these days lol… as if you are already entitled to be the NFC team in the superbowl. what a joke.

Let's get some facts...

I’m sick of everyone saying with plax we’re 11-1. He didn’t even play 12 complete games. So without further adieu, the games without plax

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2008_New_York_Giants_season

Week 5 vs. Seattle: 44-6, giants get most total offensive yards since 2002 vs. Green Bay, WITHOUT plax

Week 6 vs. Cleveland: Get our asses handed to us by the Browns with Plax. (Just saying)

Week 12 vs Arizona: Plax suspended first quarter. Plays not even a whole series and goes out with a leg injury. We win 37-29, Eli throws 3 tds and 0 ints.

Week 13 vs Washington: First game after Plax gets bullet-in-leg disease. Manning throws for 300 yards and we do one td better than the first time around.

Week 14 vs Philly: Eeek. Horrible game, happens to be the only one I went to. Hixon dropped a bomb and Westbrook gets two tds that never should have happened. It was great that we blocked a FG and returned it, but we should of had McNabb stopped when it was 3 and 11. This one hurt alot. 1 loss without plax.

Week 15 vs Dallas: Sackfest. Can’t win games when your qb’s on his back and Jacobs is out. Plaxless record: 3-2

Week 16 vs Carolina: Epic game, D looked awful but came together towards the end and Manning showed why we love him. 4-2

Week 17 vs Minnesota: Shouldn’t count, Minnesota barely beat our 2nd stringers and Carney missed his only non blocked fg of the season. 4-3 if you want to count this.

Playoffs: We got beat, straight up. Philly played better and wanted it more. Nothing else to say. 4-4

w/ Plax record: 8-1 w/o Plax record: 4-4 (including vikings game)

Now no one ever say we were 11-1 with plax and 1-4 ever again.

yup

im not an eagle fan the other guy is just wanted to clear that up…. and nice cracks about the Eagles never finishing the deal.

However,
Yes Eli did have a great game against the Redskins, but did you look at the next 5 games he played in. He only had two games where he completed over 52 percent of his passes. He also had 2 touchdowns and 4 interceptions in those games, and he only had one game with a QB rating over 80. Thats including an 8 sack game against Dallas. And I don’t give a crap what anyone says about splitting a series with Dallas and Phily. When 3 of those 4 loses were those two teams thats BS. Worse of all Phily came into our place twice and beat us I know we are road warriors, but that can’t happen. Eli showed no backbone in that playoff game. More importantly, after a superbowl run like last year I was expecting alot more than what he showed at the end of the year.

At least

he didn’t get benched for Kevin Kolb. That was a plus.

You play to win the game!

NOOOO

Brandon Marshall is a mess, he will be in trouble with the law again at least once this year. He is very talented but def not worth the headache

I watched the entire playoff game last season, and what left me shaking my head was not Eli. It was the play calling. You like to point out a game that featured Eli getting sacked 8 times…Yea cause that’s all on Eli there. If the line is not holding up, and Eli is facing a prison break I don’t see him being very productive. Nor do I expect any quarterback to be productive when the O line looks like Swiss cheese! Fact is we will miss Plax, and I hope that this receiving core can play well.

Im so sick and tired

of these diva, borderline criminal, yet ultra-talented recievers out there!! Listen, I am also tired of hearing about the availabilty of these guys as well. Lets face it guys, If the giants didint bite on Braylon Edwards and Anquan Boldin they arent gonna bite for Marshall either. The Giants already sent the message that they are content to go through the season with what is already on the roster. Hey do we remember when Jerry Reese cut Luke Pettigute and declared that David Diehl was our starting left tackle? Alot of people (including myself) were very sketchy on that idea and look how that worked out. Basically what im trying to say here is that Reese has earned the benefit of the doubt. If he is confident in our wr corps as is then we should be too. Now im not saying that B.M. isnt an amazing talent cuz he is. But what we would have to give up to get him would definetly be in the Roy Williams to Dallas range if not more cuz Marshall is ten times the reciever that Williams is. You can thank the Idiot Jerry Jones for setting the market on that one. Do we really want to deal with another prima donna wr? Then why did we get rid of plax to begin with? Gun charges aside. Would he help us get to the top of the mountain quicker? U bet. But at what cost and for how long till he wears out his welcome in NY? Cuz these me first wr out there always do. It’s do or die with what we already have boys…………………Lets go Giants!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Comments?

yea you can say that the play calling was under par, but Gilbride was never a top notch play caller even in our super bowl run; however, our execution was amazing during that time and that was the reason why we were able to make that run. When Eli is completing only 50 percent of his passes and throws two Int that puts our defense’s back against the wall im sorry thats not the play calling thats the execution. And im not blaming it all on him the receivers didn’t get the separation from the defense and get open. However, it doesnt matter who is the OC and how good the play calling is if you don’t execute your not going to win games. Im just saying the combination isn’t going to work unless Eli can make Peyton like strides in becoming a leader on the field.

About our line Eli was sacked 27 times if you take out that one game he was only sacked 19 times in 15 games that would put him in the bottom ten in the NFL for sacks a game, so our line is anything but Swiss cheese and as a Giant fan you know we have a very solid line so something was wrong that game and it wasn’t the line. Just saying sacks are not always the lines fault.
