What Does The Choice Of Beckum Tell Us?

I think all Giant's fans are going to be interested to see how Travis Beckum does this year. He looks like a player that can make some real contributions on offense.  As I've been rehashing the draft in my mind, it seems like that selection, more than any other, will give us some insight into the the Giant's draft thinking.  Beckum was one of a big group of tight ends who have the same relative skill set (Including Ingram, Cook and Casey and I think there were one or two more), good receivers, bad blockers.  The Giants reached out and took Beckum with the last pick of the third round.  Tight end wasn't a position of need and we'd already taken 2 receivers, so he must have been the player the Giants had rated most highly at that point, and they clearly preferred him to the other similar players who were all available at that point.  The other tight ends that had similar ratings didn't go until the mid to late 5th round.  It could be argued that the Giants pulled the trigger on him too early and could have taken somebody else, and still gotten Beckum in the 5th round.  It will be interesting to see how Beckum's career stacks up to those 5th round picks.  If he proves to be substantially better than the others, then Reese really is an amazing talent evaluator.  But, if he isn't head and shoulders above the others, maybe we'll have to acknowledge that Reese is not perfect.

I loved the selection of Beckum

and I’ve been one to say the Giants should grab a guy like him in this draft, a pass catching TE to be a weapon.

He is not a real TE, he is more like Gates or Cooley. TE is not a need cuz of Boss, but Beckum is FAR from a backup TE. He is a pass catching weapon that should be lining up all over the field.

It is a sign, along with Nicks and Barden, that Reese knows what having young weapons can do for a QB entering his prime…See Eli’s older brother.

You need Weapons, the Defense is already taken care of, and while depth along the O-Line would be nice, there’s really no reason to be spending high picks on BACKUPS right now.

Not saying Eli will ever be Peyton, but looking at all his new toys on offense its HARD to believe he’s gonna do worse.

I don't think Reese pulled the trigger too early

While guys like Shawn Nelson and James Casey went just after Becks, you could argue that these other guys don’t really hold a candle to what Beckum was in college.

The other guys were real workout warriors, like Dustin Keller on the Jets, but if you look at it so was Beckum.

This guy was a legit 1st-2nd rounder before his injury, unlike a guy like Ingram who was still a 2nd-3rd rounder without his injury.

He may have been able to grab him later, but why? If you like a player you grab him. Look at all the other teams that seemed to reach for players, are they really reaches cuz Mike Mayock or Mel Kiper say so?

I don't have a clue what this means!!!

A pass catching, non-blocking TE??? Are we gonna be runnin a RUN n’GUN, (5) receiver set offense here in NY soon? I thought our offense was run first with blocking TE’s who surprise the Defense by slipping off their blocks and going out on a pattern? We’ve invested time and money into three of them recently. If you put Beckum in a two TE set, what play do you call? Run to his side? Throw to him? (yeah. no one’d expect that) Throw to Boss?? (oh, so the guys a decoy??)

He ’s an ineteresting character Beckum, but what JR has in mind for him is beyond me!!! Maybe a slot guy, not a real TE??

Yeah that’s gotta be it…

After leaving the comment above, I got to thinking.

Maybe Beckum is going to be our bigger, stronger, faster version of Wes Welker!!!???

The other thought that leaked out of my little brain, is maybe JR figures we didn’t want to spend the money on a quality WR so we’ll kill their defensive backs with quantity!!!! We’ve got enough receivers to have their CBs doing wind sprints all afternoon!!!!   (poor bastards!!!! :-)

Chris Cooley,

Dallas Clark, Dustin Keller or Antonio Gates. Think that way. Its a type of player the Giants have lacked, and to me, needed in the past. Its a TRUE safety valve, someone who is quick and always open. The guy has great hands; Nicks, Crabtree and Beckum arguably have the best hands in the draft (really in no order either)

Look at the way Beckum played in college. Id say HE not Nicks or Barden has the MOST potential out of all these guys. I would NOT be surprised to see him lead the Giants in catches a few years down the road (maybe earlier than later too).

I’ll say, do NOT sleep on Travis Beckum. He put up 28 reps on the bench. That doesn’t mean he can block, but it means he’s pretty damn strong.

It means

they thought he was a good player. That’s all. They aren’t changing their offense. Maybe he’ll just be a better option than throwing checkdowns to Michael Matthews.

not jumping

on the Beckum bandwagon just yet, but i like the selection. just like freebradshaw pointed out ….he is a weapon that can be used like gates, clark, and other TE. he has a hugh upside. when he was healthy he was the 1 of the best TE in college football.

It's hard to tell

What the drafting of Beckum means? So i did a little research. The games that Plax missed or had no stats, weeks 5 and 12-17, so i looked at Boss’ numbers. Week 5, he had only 2 for 9 yards, but that’s the game Hixon played for Burress and torched the Seahawks before he left with a concussion. Weeks 12-16, he accumulated 14 for 167 yards and 2 TD’s. Week 17, no stats. But, Boss also had 5 games with no stats and i know he started off the season seemingly not involved in the offense.

At first, before i did my research, i thought the Giants would look to Boss/TE to get more production they may have lost in Plax’s absence. The numbers really aren’t indicative of that. We also know that Plax would command attention regardless of field position and Boss was more of a red-zone threat.

So really, this doen’t explain why we drafted Beckum? Or does it?!? Any mismatches we lost on the outside with Plax gone, (and given our current WR’s) we will now get in the middle or in between the hashes. Assuming all reports are fairly accurate given Beckum, and Boss will be primarily a red-zone threat, Beckum can be used regardless of field position. At the same time, getting LB’s or S’s out of the box to open up the running lanes. Perhaps they want more TE production?

Or, the Giants just drafted him for no rhyme or reason and he was the best graded player available, and i wasted time? lol
