Irvin weighs in on WR debate
Michael Irvin told Ralph Vacchiano of the New York Daily News that he was 'floored and shocked' the Giants did not trade for Braylon Edwards or Anquan Boldin.
Here is Irvin's full quote.
I’m floored and shocked that you didn’t go get Braylon Edwards all Anquan Boldin. I really am. Both of them are very good guys and I think they would’ve fit perfectly in their scheme. So I am shocked that they did not go get those guys.
This debate, of course, is just getting started. Rather than make one of those deals the Giants, of course, drafted Hakeem Nicks in the first round and Ramses Barden in the third round.

This actually makes me feel better about not trading for a WR
It’s a good rule of thumb to believe the opposite of whatever Irvin believes. For instances, I believe it is a bad idea to have your “friend’s” drug paraphernalia in your car. As for analyzing football, his own colleague (Tom Jackson) once asked him if he was retarded.

Reese vs Irvin
If I have to choose between Reese’s judgment and Irvin’s…hmmmm….I’ll choose the GM who took his team to the SB his first year on the job vs the guy who couldn’t hold a job as a talking head on ESPN and was replaced by the noted wordsmith named Emmitt.

Like I’ve said, if a Cowboy or a Cowboy fan can’t understand something, then it must make sense.

A GM also has to consider ...
Long-term signability and at what cap # (and over a 3 – 5 year window), if JR were to go out and get either Boldin or Edwards. Irvin can just comment on whether he would rather have one of those vets vs. the two rookies, but it ain’t that simple.
I suspect that was more the issue than what kind of picks/players he would have had to give up. Especially right before the draft, when you could not negotiate with the player without some serious leaks arising, which might tip off draft day strategy for what would have been a deal announced when the Giants were on the clock with the first pick traded.
I can still see the BE deal possibly getting done prior to the 2009 season, if:
1. The draft picks are more reasonable (like a 2 & a 5).
2. BE is realistic and signs a long-term deal as part of the trade.
3. The Giants throw in some one like Hixon (better if it’s Moss, but not Smith) as the Brownies will need some bodies at wide receiver after losing Winslow & Stallworth (and the Giants would have too many WR bodies heading into camp if they just add BE).

Why does anyone give
a shyt what Irvin thinks about this. I know the news is slow in Giant land these days, but damn. This is a headline?
