Views on the Giants, and other stuff
I have been wanting to do something a little different for a while, and since I am both here and at Pinstripe Alley these days, I thought I would try my hand at a Sunday column offering thoughts on the Giants, the Yankees and sometimes the sports world at-large.
'Valentine's Views' will, I hope become a regular Sunday morning staple at both sites. So, here goes.
- I think the primary difference between the Giants and the Yankees is management. The Giants, with a Super Bowl and four straight playoff appearances, are managed by the very stable Mara family and are always consistent in what they do. The Yankees are managed, of course, by the mercurial Steinbrenner clan. With The Boss in declining health, the last few years have seen a power struggle, resulting in some stupid decisions and affecting the product on the field.
- I think another difference between the teams in their general managers. Giants' GM Jerry Reese cut his professional teeth as a scout, is a brilliant evaluator of talent, and hardly ever makes a personnel mistake. I love the philosophy Yankee GM Brian Cashman has brought to the organization the past few years. Cashman, though, is at best a very questionable talent evaluator. Right philosophy, wrong choices and your team suffers.
- I think anyone who tells you the Giants are not, on paper, a playoff team is not living in reality. Yes, I am talking about you, Mike Florio. Our man 'cjmulrain' did a great job a few days ago calling out Florio for predicting that the Giants would miss the playoffs in 2009. That IS possible, certainly. Injuries happen. So do funny bounces and inexplicable losses. But, heading into the season the Giants are undeniably one of the league's 5 best teams, and one of the two best in the NFC. Saying flat out that they will miss the playoffs is folly.
- I think I am finding it impossible to decide which guy is the best Giants' beat writer -- Mike Garafolo or Ralph Vacchiano. MG leads right now, but only because of our recent interview with him. Of course, I haven't gotten around to asking Ralph yet this off-season.
- I think Roger Clemens should follow Mark McGwire's lead and simply quit talking about the steroid allegations he faces. I also think it is sad how he has consistently thrown Andy Pettitte, and what used to be a great friendship, under the bus.
- I think relaxing the batting practice policy and allowing fans without field-level tickets down by the fences before games was a smart decision by the Yankees. They have created enough anger amongst fans already this season, and it's about time they did something right.
- I think I owe 'FrankDiscussion,' a PA regular, a huge 'thank-you' for the two phone calls he placed that helped me get through my first radio show last Tuesday.
- I think the 10-game homestand the Yankees started Friday night is huge in many ways. They need victories to get pointed in the right direction, and they need big crowds and energy in the Stadium to soothe some of the ill feelings that have been generated by The House that George Built.
- I think my pal 'jrs' is doing a great job at Blueshirt Banter. But, I also think there is still no way he turns me into a hockey fan.
- I think when I watch Dwight Howard of the Orlando Magic I wonder how anyone else ever gets a rebound when he's in the neighborhood. I also think the Celtics win their Game 7 with the Magic tonight, just because I don't think Paul Pierce and Rajon Rondo will let them lose.
- I think I really, really want the under-manned Rockets to send the arrogant, play hard only when they feel like it Los Angeles Lakers, home for the summer this afternoon.

I absolutely agree with you
on the Lakers. I watch maybe five regular season NBA games a year, and maybe 10-20 playoff games (pretty much I’ll keep watching as long as Melo is still playing). But I despise Kobe, I despise the falseness and arrogance that he wraps himself in, and I hope the Rockets or the Nuggets embarrass them once and for all.

LeBron I can deal with. Kobe I can’t stand.

If RA gets hot,
the Celts would almost be a sure thing. If not, it’ll be a dog fight. As for LA, I wonder if their fan base is confined to Angelinos and Hollywood types? The big difference in the series IMO has been Adelman outcoaching Jackson (who I like because of his connection to the Knicks, a great role player.)
Florio vs King
I would take Peter King’s column over Mike Florio’s any day of the week, and King has the Giants ranked as the number three team in the NFL, and the number one team in the NFC…
No doubt
With Florio, you can just never trust his sources. His site is stiill a must read, but you have to take Pro Football Talk w/a grain of salt. Credible information is not Florio’s thing, throwing out any sort of rumor to get attention is.

Following the Yankees
must be like reading about your crazy uncle in the newspaper; down here in Tampa, the new Steinbrenner seems like a clueless nut, Jorgé was off the hook back in the day, but he had good business skills. I was a Yanks fan until Thurman Munson died, and with the Giants losing 23 games a season back then they provided enough angst to dampen the whole sports watching thing.
That said, may I say; Go Rays!
Conan!, What is good in Football?!
Daa.... to run between the tackles,
To drive the linebackers before you,
And to hear the lamentations of the cheerleaders.
Thanks for the props
I can understand you not turning into a hockey fan, the NHL doesn’t want you to. How else can they explain not showing the first 2 periods of a Game 7 the other night (Bruins-Canes) that was a classic?
The NHL apparently has all the fans they need, and aren’t accepting new ones, thank you.

I can’t stand that hockey is barely on TV. I had to search for a year just to find what frickin channel VS. is on.
I love hockey, I have started to get back into it the past few seasons, actually when the Rangers went back to the playoffs.
I always thought that the only thing that aside from football, a hockey game is the only one that will get me into the game as much as football.
These playoffs this year have all been classic. Its a shame that both of the Canes series were barely on TV (unless of course you have cablevision then you could have caught the Devils-Canes classic series.)
THe Blackhawks Canucks also was incredible, if you could stay up to watch it….
Its just a damn shame. I think the game is at its height of popularity in years. But now even the conference finals are mainly on VS.

Gary Bettman is either really evil or really stupid
I can’t figure out which. The thing I don’t understand is why hockey teams haven’t lowered their ticket prices and concession prices in an attempt to become the “affordable sport” – hockey is best enjoyed live anyway, they might as well try to get a whole new generation of fans out of the kids whose families have been priced out of the NBA, NFL, and now MLB.
HD has done wonders for watching hockey on TV, but it is definitely best enjoyed live. Living down in SoFla, I can tell you Panthers games are fairly affordable, low ticket prices and free parking, and they still can’t sell out.
But the Rangers at MSG on the other hand are an expensive ticket and sold out every night

Well here in Carolina
this is basketball country but you can’t tell that when you go to the RBC Center to see the Canes. That place rocks and playoff time is just nuts. The Caniacs make that building shake. Truly something that you have to see live.
Hockey is one fo those games that
is not easily played, it is expensive, and it a tad too fast to follow for the casual fan. All of these factors (added into the COMPLETE INEPTITUDE of Bettman and his crew) has really hurt a game that was THIS CLOSE to overtaking the NBA for #3 back in the 1993-1994 range. Man, they have to get off VERSUS.
Speaking of VERSUS, I had to watch a feed from them the other night on TSN (Canadian ESPN basically), and it was some fo the most abysmal camera work and commentary I have ever seen/heard. No wonder no ones wants to watch that feed, they miss a ton of the plays that make hockey what it is (big hits, slick passes, and GOALS! HOW THE HELL DO YOU MISS GOALS the first time around?). I think the NHL has the old “can’t get out of it’s own way” syndrome.
Whenever I watch Dwight Howard
I can’t help but think think how lucky he is that the NBA does not test for steroids.
BEFORE (around four years ago):

AFTER (today):

They do test, but it's kind of a joke
As of now, there are no mandatory tests for veterans, they don’t do blood tests, and they don’t save the samples. The only way to have a serious testing program is to save blood samples and test them years later when testing science catches up with the latest in PEDs. The CBA runs out in 2010 and is being renegotiated now, so maybe there will be more stringent requirements.
Dwight Howard
is just silly big. Those arms look like they’re straight from a comic book. Honestly, though, he’s fun as hell to watch, so I hope the NBA never tests for steroids. If these morons wanna shorten their lives by 20 years for a few extra paychecks, let them.
I stopped watching hockey
when so many classic teams fled South. With all respect to the Caniacs, there should not be any teams in any place that closes school for three inches or less of snow. Bring back the Nordiques, the NorthStars, the Jets, and of course The Whale!!!

I miss having all the Canadian teams too. But the money just wasn’t there at the time in those cities.
But of those 3 teams, only the Whalers aren’t possibly coming back, or at least a team in the city.
The Minnesota Wild are in Minnesota (you stopped watching hockey…so I had to mention it.), The Coyotes may be moving back to Winnipeg, and there possibly may be a new team all together in Ontario. THey aren’t gonna be the Nordiques, but its a new Canada team…..
I hope these 3 teams happen. I always thought that once all these teams moved that it was wrong cuz hockey is Canada’s game.
But the realitiy is the money and its not there. Teams like Edmonton and Calgary still struggle a bit and are the reason for the salary cap cuz they don’t make enough to compete.

three inches....
that would be considered a storm in NC. I’m from Jesrsey so I know what snow is. NC is funny. It’s theonly state I know of that can shut down businesses, schools and churches with just the forecast of snow. If you look out the window at 3,4 in the morning and see snow, he can turn off the alarm clock because everything will be closed down. Get ready to sleep in.
