In BBV Mock Draft, Rams select ...
We are two picks into our Big Blue View Community Mock Draft, and our man 'Woogie526,' selecting for the St. Louis Rams, is already bumming that the guy he wanted -- Jason Smith -- was taken at No. 1.
So, 'Woogie' had to alter his plan. Here is what he did.
2. St. Louis Rams -- Aaron Curry, LB, Wake Forest
Well this decision was originally going to be a selfish one by the new coach. However, with Jason Smith off the board, it became a no-brainer. I choose Aaron Curry, LB, Wake Forest. He would be the brain of Spag's defense. In the crazy schemes Spags uses, he needs a general on the field to organize blitzes and coverages.
[NOTE: I am already receiving mid-round selections. Let's not do that, gang. Wait and see who is taken by the teams in front of you, then send in your pick. Too many variables the other way.]
| 1. Detroit Lions (selected by 'cjmulrain') |
||
|
Jason Smith, OT, Baylor: Conventional wisdom says that the Lions are going to select quarterback Matt Stafford of Georgia, but since I'm running the show I'm going in a different direction. I'm not convinced that Stafford is going to be a star QB in the league, and when you're taking a guy with the first pick I don't think you can have any doubts about it, especially when you're coming off the first ever 0-16 season in NFL History. Even if Stafford does have the tools to be a great quarterback, the Lions have no semblance of an O-line to protect him, putting him at risk to develop David Carr syndrome if he were brought in to play right away. To address this, I went with Smith, who profiles as a potential franchise left tackle. I strongly believe in the philosophy of building a football team from the lines out and think a team as devoid of talent as the Lions would be better served with a rock at left tackle. I was tempted by Aaron Curry but think there will be better value on the defensive side of the ball at the 20th pick than there will be on the O-line. As for QB, let's just say that I'm not too optimistic about the prospects for the 2009 Lions and like the thought of Colt McCoy in silver and blue. | |

KC pick should be easy
With the aquisition of Matt Cassell, KC needs to either get him a weapon WR hence Crabtree OR protect him with an O lineman Eugene Monroe. IMHO

defense wins championships

Curry huh?
You really think Spags wants a Top 5 pick on a LB? Id say that’s the last thing he wants. In NY and even in Philly they never once grabbed a 1st round backer.
Id say going by Smith being gone its Eugene Monroe here. They need a LT with Pace gone and its probably a foregone conclusion they get a LT with this pick, whether its Smith or Monroe
But if the Rams draft defense there’s no way they grab Curry. Going by the Gints blueprint, Id say Spags wants a DE. He’d be getting something going with Chris Long, Carriker and….Brian Orakpo. He’d have his 3 pass rushers, Carriker would be Tuck, Long would be Strahan and Orakpo would be Osi (at least in theory, these guys aint there yet).

Except - the Best Athlete Available plays a factor with Curry
I agree with the pick because he establishes his D leader and he gets a difference maker who can do 3 things, put pressure on the QB, stop the run AND cover the passing game.

I can see it
since Curry is probably the best player in the draft. I guess that depends what kind of strategy Billy Devaney uses and I really have no idea. If its not best player available, then I agree with Free … it’d be Monroe.

And....
remember: in Phila, Spags was the lb’s coach and in NYG he was the DC – so now that he’s the head coach, perhaps he thinks a playmaker LB is what the D needs to function properly and run on all cylinders.
Two quick thoughts:
(1) GREAT points on here, guys. Interesting stuff
(2) Spags: I know he wasn’t with the Gmen long, but boy did he make a great impression on me and all of other Giants fans I know. I will definitely be rooting for him and I hope his career goes far. He’s a great guy and he’s going to make an excellent head coach.

They have Will Witherspoon in St. Louis
as their MLB already, along with Pisa Tinoisa…… I don’t know what the perception of them there is but they aren’t that bad. I know Curry would probably be an upgrade but LB wasn’t always the priority in the draft with Spags teams.
Spags was a LB coach, but most of the LB’s he’s ever had were lower round guys or even undrafed like Piece. Not saying Curry is a bad fit, but Id say they have some decent LB’s but can’t really get to the QB. And we all know that’s what Spags values over anything else.

Agree
As much as I like Curry I don’t think he will be the pick here. It would have to be one of the two tackles, Smith or Monroe. I understand Spags is the man-in-charge, but do you think he would spend the #2 overall pick on a LB?
Also, being a former LB coach would push me further to believe that Spags will not take Curry here – he can make do with what he has seeming the Rams are already in pretty good shape there and have other glaring needs (i.e. Pace gone).
In all actuality, the Rams are trying to trade this pick now and probably wont be sitting at the #2 spot come draft day.

No trade
The need a LT, and there are 2 equal caliber guys here. They will get one so I doubt there is a trade. I only say no Curry if they choose defense cuz Spags like Pass rushers.

There isn't a team in the draft
that has said they aren’t willing to deal their pick. And this is true, cuz for the right price Im sure any team would trade their #1 pick.
The Lions, CHief and Seahawks are open to trade too. This is nothing new.
by FreeBradshaw on Apr 7, 2009 5:33 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I'm sure most teams are willing to trade their #1 if the price is right
and I’m sure trade talks of team’s #1s go on behind the scene all the time – that is nothing new.
But to publically go out and say that you are open to any trade suggestions let’s everyone else in the league know that you really don’t want your pick and wouldn’t be stubborn about letting it go. In a sense, you’re putting your pick on the trade block.
To the best of my knowledge, this would be the first time the Rams made such an announcement – meaning that it would be new, as of today.

Spags is a D guy,
but given what he’s got to work with, if he uses this pick instedof trading for more pick players it would seem he has to go for Smith or Monroe. LOT i’s the second most important spot on a football team, IMO

In my defense
Of all the mock drafts I read.
It was Smith or Curry. The Rams SBn blog had Curry as well, but with Smith off the board, I went with Curry.
The draft is supposely deeper at tackle then LB.
They will probably trade the pick but I felt a cornerstone on the defense would be the way to go here.
