BBV Community Mock Draft begins

Today we get our inaugural Big Blue View Community Mock Draft under way. The Detroit Lions are up first, and that means we turn to 'cjmulrain' for his selection

1. Detroit Lions -- Jason Smith, OT, Baylor

Conventional wisdom says that the Lions are going to select quarterback Matt Stafford of Georgia, but since I'm running the show I'm going in a different direction. I'm not convinced that Stafford is going to be a star QB in the league, and when you're taking a guy with the first pick I don't think you can have any doubts about it, especially when you're coming off the first ever 0-16 season in NFL History. Even if Stafford does have the tools to be a great quarterback, the Lions have no semblance of an O-line to protect him, putting him at risk to develop David Carr syndrome if he were brought in to play right away. To address this, I went with Smith, who profiles as a potential franchise left tackle. I strongly believe in the philosophy of building a football team from the lines out and think a team as devoid of talent as the Lions would be better served with a rock at left tackle. I was tempted by Aaron Curry but think there will be better value on the defensive side of the ball at the 20th pick than there will be on the O-line. As for QB, let's just say that I'm not too optimistic about the prospects for the 2009 Lions and like the thought of Colt McCoy in silver and blue.

[NOTE: The St. Louis Rams are on the clock. So, 'Woogie,' please e-mail your pick to bigblueview@gmail.com as soon as possible.]

Already

Someone had to adjust their pick. Smith was one of my two choices.

I guess

all the people in Pride of Detroit are gonna love you for this. I’ve been trying to see why they hate the QB idea so much, and usually the answer I get is that the defense is atrocious. Yet I still don’t see how adding a OLB like Curry, or a LT like Smith fixes that any more than a QB.

If they are going to go on offense, it makes more sense to grab a QB. They may try to follow the Dolphins idea, but the Dolphins grabbed Chad Henne in the 2nd round. This year, aside from Stafford and Sanchez, the rest of the QB class sucks. If Chad Henne was in this year’s class, he’d be a Top 20 pick, probably going to either the Bucs, Jets or even Broncos at #12 if the top 2 were off the board.

And the David Carr syndrome can be easily avoided. They already have a vet they can throw to the wolves (or Bears in this case) in Culpepper. They can sit him and grab the OT later in the draft or pray that one lands in their lap next year with a high pick. But the QB is more difficult to find, especially since Alex Smtih…er..Sam Bradford and Colt McCoy are the top 2 next year.

Here's the thing

I really don’t think Stafford is going to be a very good QB. I think he has much more Alex Smith or Joey Harrington in him than he does Peyton Manning or Matt Ryan. I don’t think it’s a good idea to pick the best of a weak bunch just b/c there aren’t many other options out there. I think it’s a much sounder strategy to build a solid team and make the QB one of the last additions, rather than try to build around a QB, unless that QB is a proven commodity.

I think next years class is going to be much stronger than this years. It’s pretty much the same way I felt when SF had the first pick a few years ago and went with Alex Smith – I strongly felt they should have gone with one of the running backs (granted, they’ve all gotten hurt, but Cadillac and Brown have both been good when healthy) and waited a year to take a QB (which would have been Leinart, Young, or Cutler, all of whom have been better than Smith).

by cjmulrain on Apr 7, 2009 6:26 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

really?

Harrington was a pro-style guy, but he was an idiot who couldn’t read defenses. Alex Smith is a system guy even if he’s very smart. And Leinart and Young have done nothing when they played. really both are busts until further notice.

Next year’s top guys supposedly are Colt McCoy, Sam Bradford and Jevan Sneed. The first 2 are the definitions of system guys. Every bit comparable to Alex Smith, probably each have less strong arms too. Sneed is a pro-style guy, and he may be the best out of these guys and if he has a big season may be the top overall guy.

BUt in no way is next year’s class stronger. Stafford is by all accounts a smart guy with a cannon and accurate arm. He has shown touch on the ball too. Sanchez may be better than Stafford cuz he’s more accurate. If Sanchez had a longer college career, he’d be #1.

Stafford is the opposite of ALex Smith really.

Stafford or Sanchez would still be the top guys next year too. I have no doubts about that right now.

also

If I were the Lions, I would do anything I could to trade down. Unfortunately, nobody seems to want to trade up.

No. 1 pick

There just isn’t that one guy everyone is dying to have, and everyone knows will be an absolute superstar.

by Ed Valentine on Apr 7, 2009 6:28 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

And your not the only one with the COlt McCoy or Sam Bradford ideas

why? I have no clue. Yea their completion percentages are great. Yea, production and wins. But I ask why has Graham Harrell been relegated to undrafted FA status? Is he any worse than these 2? Harrell is more accurate than both and has a decen arm. McCoy is also 6"1 and Bradford doesn’t have half the arm of Mark Sanchez, let alone Stafford.

Not saying it can’t be done, but there really isn’t a system guy to think of that has actually been good.

same here

mine wasn’t as long as his, but to his credit, we are talking about the Lions, it requires a “book” to explain their mess. So his comments are about right.

Once again

You are busy writing about that minor-league sport and short-changing the fine folks here who follow a real sport, and a real team. LOL!!

Clock

I don’t want to hold people to ‘you have to get your pick to me by X time.’ That’s not really fair to people who are working or have other things going on. That said, we do need to get through a couple of picks each day, so if someone really holds up the works I will pick for them.

A clock?

Bajaserge, c’mon! I got Blueshirt Banter to run, Big Blue View to contribute to, I’m trying to help Ed calm down Yankee fans who are on the ledge at Pinstripe Alley even though I’m a filthy Met dan, and trying to sneak peeks at hot women on the internet.

And oh yeah, do my job occasionally….

This guy wants to put us on a clock!

LMAO, just busting

Rams Pick

Hate to spoil the party but what will HAPPEN is that Spag’s will trade his #1 for Kiwanuka, Barry Cofield and a Giants #2 and the Giants will select Michael Crabtree WR. Spags wants Kiwi and Cofield because they know his system and he will have 1/2 of a defensive line that they have never had. This is the trade explaining why the Giants loaded up by signing Canty and Bernard. With their pick at # 29 the Giants will select Kenny Britt WR completing the replacements of Burress and Toomer

by Santa Fe Ray on Apr 7, 2009 5:13 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Not a bad theory...

But I really hope that doesn’t happen.

1.) Giving Spags weapons like Kiwanuka and Cofield is asking for hell on the rest of the NFC
2.) #2 pick is going to be too expensive
3.) Could probably get Crabtree at the #6 spot – as long as it’s before the Raiders
4.) Honestly, Kiwi/Coefield/2nd is too much to give up for an unproven Crabtree.

by one-bar on Apr 7, 2009 5:29 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Is a good theory

However JR has said all along that they got Canty and Bernard because the starters were getting tired at the end of last season. They want what worked for them in 2007 and if they get rid of Kiwi and Coffield it will not happen. And I also agree wtin one-bar that those 2 and a 2nd is too much to give up. But I do agree that it may be a trade between Spags and Giants because they know each other. Just like Chiefs – Patriots

by Bajaserge on Apr 7, 2009 5:40 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Won't happen

No way the Giants give up that much. There are too many quality WRs in the draft.

by Ed Valentine on Apr 7, 2009 5:49 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

not a bad idea

BUt Crabtree is not Calvin Johnson, nor is he even Fitzgerald. He is good, but he doesn;t have the size of gamebreaking ability those other guys did.

The idea of getting all these lineman wasn’t to trade them. It was to keep them fresh throughout the season. I
