NFL Draft: Day 2 Open Thread
Here is your Day 2 Open Thread for the NFL Draft.
I will be popping in and out, but I am not sure how many additional posts there will be. A couple I am sure, but I am not going to sit and watch every pick. I am just going to check in occasionally to see what the Giants have done.
Enjoy!

Here we go
Campaign for trade up for Jared Cook or Nelson begins….now?
And of course ESPN reminds us all that the Cowgirls are going to have 12 picks. It was a pleasant Day one when the only thing I had to hear was their pick getting traded, and now its going to be a reality show on day 2??
I hope all 12 picks are busts.
damn
when I heard the Lions traded the pick to the “New York” I got really excited. Said excitement dissipated when I heard the word “Jets”
gotta think
the Giants will move up in the 3rd round, right? I don’t want to sit around waiting for pick 27 haha
wow
Bengals take Michael Johnson. Another really talented player with some character issues. This could be the ultimate boom or bust draft for them, but I really like what they’ve done.
can't believe
the 3 guys that they got. I had thought they had talked about character being a main concern.
Smith, Mauluga and Johnson before the College season, you could have penciled these guys in for Top 5 picks, but cuz of character they slipped to where they were.
by FreeBradshaw on Apr 26, 2009 10:42 AM EDT up reply actions
Cook, Coffman or Nelson may be there
Id love to have COok, Nelson or Coffman (in that order), so its looking good.
Side note, even for someone who hates the Patriots, you have love the drafts they have. That Vollmer guy will probably be the starter in 1-2 seasons.
And then they get Brandon Tate. He was the better UNC WR, not Nicks. Not taking anything away from Nicks, cuz Tate had some injury issues and got caught with Harvin smoking dope.
And of course the Lions draft a WR….

You'd want Coffman last?
I like him more than Cook or Nelson.
Coffman, Cook, Nelson.
"I dunno. I never smoked any Astroturf"
-Tug McGraw
Coffman is slow
Cook and Nelson..Fast.
But looking at who the Giants got in Beckum, I have no problem at all with """passing up"" Nelson.
Reese knows what he’s doing, and I guess I completely forgot about Beckum. He was the #1 all-world type dude at Wisconsin.
An H-Back type, but I think he’s quicker than any of these other guys and has better hands, so that’s probably why Reese grabbed him. And being the #1 at Wisconsin helps.
by FreeBradshaw on Apr 26, 2009 2:37 PM EDT up reply actions
Ramses Barden? Haha
Jerry Reese, you crazy mofo.
"I dunno. I never smoked any Astroturf"
-Tug McGraw
Crazy?
What’s crazy about getting a 6’6" WR who can go get a jump ball?
No, I like the pick.
I’m just amazed at how consistently well Reese drafts.
"I dunno. I never smoked any Astroturf"
-Tug McGraw
Yeah.
In no particular order…
Hixon
Smith
Nicks
Barden
Manningham
And someone else, maybe.
"I dunno. I never smoked any Astroturf"
-Tug McGraw
Tyree will stick
Because he’s a very good special teams player and he has some experience. Moss is probably gone unless he plays really well in the preseason. I think Reese played this right. I’ll bet Miami would have taken Barden if we hadn’t traded for the Eagles pick.
by Tucker Fredrickson on Apr 26, 2009 12:31 PM EDT up reply actions
Reason why Tyree stays:

And that’s good enough for me.
"I dunno. I never smoked any Astroturf"
-Tug McGraw
Yeah, I'm wondering this right now. How did we pull that off?
"I dunno. I never smoked any Astroturf"
-Tug McGraw
RAMSES!!!!
I love love love this pick. I like this more than I like the Nicks pick. I will not be even remotely surprised if Barden has a better NFL career than Nicks. Great move for Reese
Pats pick up Tate.
This is a nice pick for them. As much as most of us like Hicks, Tate was the #1 receiver until he got hurt. This guy is nasty.
Don't forget 6'6" Kevin Boss
With Hicks’ hands, Barden and Boss’ size, we should be very dangerous in the green zone. Team scoring avg just went up. Jacobs has to be smiling from ear to ear.
Well I hope they don't cop the same attitude of Plax and Shockey
And decide to train somewhere besides the Giants training facility. I always hated that about those two and it’s one of the main reasons I’m glad they’re both gone. Good riddance.
I don't think so
Don’t know too much about Barden’s character but Hicks is down to earth. We know what we have in Boss and I reall don’t think Eli and Brandon will let a rookie come in with an attitude. They would nip that in the bud quick.
Exactly what we needed.
Does Barden qualify as a downfield type of reciever? Because that would be perfect.
"I dunno. I never smoked any Astroturf"
-Tug McGraw
Was the "trade up" with Pittsburg??
Not the Eagles….
I really think we should pick up a RB or a ILB now.
Javon Ringer and Gerald McRath are both available…
"I dunno. I never smoked any Astroturf"
-Tug McGraw
Yeah, I heard a lot of mocks matching him to the Giants...
…which I would love.
"I dunno. I never smoked any Astroturf"
-Tug McGraw
A little bit on Barden....
“The most physically imposing receiver in the 2009 NFL Draft, Barden proved in postseason All-Star games and at the Combine that while he might not have played at the major college level, he is a major talent. His size, strength and long stride have scouts comparing him to former Denver Broncos standout Shannon Sharpe, present Bronco Brandon Marshall and San Diego’s Vincent Jackson, all who proved that while they might tower over cornerbacks, they can also play in the short-area passing attack.”
Coffman's still there, though.
So I’d take him. Or Javon Ringer. Or Gerald McRath.
"I dunno. I never smoked any Astroturf"
-Tug McGraw
F'ing Titans
maybe they were pissed that the Giants got Nicks and Barden….
LOL, I have no idea if Reese actually wanted Cook, but that’s moot now.
Nelson, Coffman and James Casey are all on the board BTW.
I think that would be a message sent right there if they grab a TE. Eli needs weapons, and Nicks Barden and one of these TE’s would be nuts..At least on paper so far.
by FreeBradshaw on Apr 26, 2009 11:45 AM EDT up reply actions
I think a smaller need is SS. But we can address that later, I think.
"I dunno. I never smoked any Astroturf"
-Tug McGraw
We got Sintim
and don’t discount Jon Goff, he barely played but should be thought of as an extra pick.
I agree with RB tho, but I think that’s coming.
Andre Brown would be incredible.
by FreeBradshaw on Apr 26, 2009 11:48 AM EDT up reply actions
I forgot about Sintim, but I still think we need a guy that can play inside and take over for Pierce. I don’t think Sintim can do that.
Sintim can't do that
Jonathon Goff can…..

Can we copyright the idea of the three pronged rushing attack?
"I dunno. I never smoked any Astroturf"

do the Giants still hold the copyrights

Sorry
But the Jets were doing it back in the late 70s early 80s until they drafted Richard Todd and then Coach Joe Walton went all Kevin Gilbride and totally abandoned the run.
the Jets don't get to copyright anything
you have to either A) have won a Super Bowl or B) have gone to a Super Bowl since the Vietnam War ended in order to have that right.

6 picks out of first 100 picks...
Pretty good…we should be able to gain some depth in some of our thin positions through this.
Maybe they trade some of the later round picks
for some picks next year?/
by FreeBradshaw on Apr 26, 2009 11:46 AM EDT up reply actions
Patriots got a 2nd rounder next year in their trade with the Titans.
God, I hate them.
"I dunno. I never smoked any Astroturf"
-Tug McGraw
Cuz while Barden should spell the end
of guys like Sinorice Moss, I don’t see any other holes on the roster in need of filling, tho I guess a OG/C or some secondary would be fine.
by FreeBradshaw on Apr 26, 2009 11:47 AM EDT up reply actions
I agree....
Now that the Edwards trade is history….we should try and get a couple of mid rounders for next year by unloading our later picks.
I think we should keep something like 3 or 4 of the picks we have left.
But after that, why not trade them?
"I dunno. I never smoked any Astroturf"
-Tug McGraw
That was the one we gave to the Eagles, I think.
"I dunno. I never smoked any Astroturf"

I could care less
if Shannon Sharpe looke like a duck billed platypus, he was the greatest receiving TE in NFL history…..
He’s under a helmet anyway who cares?
by FreeBradshaw on Apr 26, 2009 12:00 PM EDT up reply actions
My bad…it was. But then the eagles traded it to Seahawks…Whats up with the Eagles?? They have like 5 5th round picks??
Eagles send #91 overall pick to Seattle for the 137th pick 5th round 213th pick in the 7th round plus a 3rd rounder next year. Great value, but didn’t we want a player?
The Eagles now hold 6 picks in the 5th round. Surely they have to be working on moving back up eventually?
With Andy reid behind this…you neber know. They do need some players…so go figure
Ok, I wonder what we're gonna do...
ILB? RB? TE? What will it be?

Chase Coffman is gone
He would have been nice, but Nelson is faster.

Beckum
Was a projected 1st/2nd rounded at the beginning of last year. Dude is a major receiving threat
Yea,,
most def.
I thought he would be behind guys like Nelson, Nelson is gigantic.
But I guess with Barden on board…
Beckum was the man a few years back at UW
by FreeBradshaw on Apr 26, 2009 12:14 PM EDT up reply actions
From where?
Either way, he’s a Day 2 draft pick. Not all of them work out.
"I dunno. I never smoked any Astroturf"
-Tug McGraw
They compared him to
Dallas CLark. An H-Back. Good pass catcher. Blocking not so much.
Looks a lot like Dustin Keller of the Jets.
Well
As per Walter football.
Becks is rated above Nelson, he ran a 4.61 (Nelson ran a 4.56)
He’s 6"3, 243.
He seems like an H back, Keller type, but he put up 28 REPS!!!!! BEATTY PUT UP 29!!!!!!(Beatty is a lineman with longer arms, so..he IS stronger than Becks.. but still).
85 - who did you expect them to take here?
Walter Payton? I can’t see getting upset over the 100th pick
(sorry, it’s not letting me hit the reply button right now)
I liked James Casey
as this type of TE,
But Beckum was better, plus in college at Wisconsin this guy was the absolute man. #1 target.
He’s more than an H-Back. He’s an actual weapon. He can go up and get it too. I’ve seen a few UW games and I forgot about him cuz of his injuries, but at the combine he obviously showed that those are over….
This draft
The impression I get is that Jerry Reese is accumulating a lot of pass catching weapons for Eli Manning. Hopefully we won’t want for a pass catching weapon. Our defense looks real solid. Our running game looks solid. Now if our passing game can match our running game it’s going to be a good year. I just wish we had more depth along the OL.
I guess the best way to help out without the true vertical threat yet is the ability to spread the ball.
I always said
that when Eli spreads the ball, he really is an elite QB. When he focused on Plaxico or someone else, he forced the ball a lot.
Spreading the ball is the best way to make Eli better, better even than trading for a #1 WR (even tho I don’t think Edwards is a #1.).
Nicks, Barden, Beckum, Hixon, Smith, Manningham, Boss, Moss….all young, but damn….
by FreeBradshaw on Apr 26, 2009 12:27 PM EDT up reply actions
There's still more time....
Id say at least one RB and a OL is coming.
As far as everything I wanted in this draft (like that matters….),
I wanted a WR and they got 2. Nicks and Barden are as good as a draft can get there.
LB-Sintim
OL-Beatty
Receiving TE- Beckum.
Well Eli has his weapons….
by FreeBradshaw on Apr 26, 2009 12:22 PM EDT up reply actions
Like everyone here already guessed
Tom Coughlin spoke about the 2 WRs they drafted and their ability to go up and get the ball in the “Green zone”.
Coaches are politicians
Jim Zorn “I’m very confident in our quarterback Jason Campbell.” Yeah right, that’s why you tried to get Cutler and Sanchez.
Reese: The reason they drafted Beckum
Is to create matchup problems and because a player from Wisconsin should come in handy in the cold windy weather in the Meadowlands. Makes a lot of sense to me.
In Reese We Trust.
hi guys, I know I’m late, had to so some Sunday Dad and hubby stuff, but I love the Barden pick, if he pans out, our offense will be absolutely sick, filthy, nasty,

Barden, Nicks and Beckum
Just sick, sick draft.
Of course, usually drafts like this with all receiving threats rarely pans out.
I really like the Beckum pick. I would have liked any of Beckum, Shawn Nelson or James Casey, but Beckum played at Wisconsin and was the man there, so its wise to choose that guy.
I love what Reese said about the cold weather. Really, all 3 of these guys could go over the middle.
And while I don’t know much about Barden other than he’s huge, beckum and Nicks where 2 of the top catching guys in the draft.
That was a problem in the past, and getting 2 of the best sets of hands in the draft is incredible.
by FreeBradshaw on Apr 26, 2009 12:46 PM EDT up reply actions
I'm warming up to Beckum
Once again it looks like a good value pick and at least one of these receivers has to pan out. Looks like we’ll be focusing on the intermediate passing game, which is Eli’s strength. Now we can look at RB or Oline or secondary depth in round 4.
by Tucker Fredrickson on Apr 26, 2009 12:49 PM EDT up reply actions
I like the 3 receivers
Barden’s size alone should demand a double team. He should win every jump ball. Hicks is the real deal. This guy catches everything. He will move the chains.
So, we thinking RB here?
Andre Brown or Javon Ringer works for me.
"I dunno. I never smoked any Astroturf"
-Tug McGraw
I'm thinking 6th or 7th round we can take Courtney Greene out of Rutgers.
"I dunno. I never smoked any Astroturf"
-Tug McGraw
Malcom Jenkins
Malcom Jenkins was interviewed on NFL network and he said something I’ve been saying for a long time. There are a lot Jersey boys in the draft. If Rutgers could keep them all home they would have a killer program.
Strong, but nimble.
He can return, but also has some bulk.
Somewhere between Jacobs and Bradshaw.
I like the pick.
"I dunno. I never smoked any Astroturf"
-Tug McGraw
played with a crap O-Line
at NC state, but that shouldn’t be a problem with the Gints.
by FreeBradshaw on Apr 26, 2009 1:48 PM EDT up reply actions
Seen he came out of
same high school class as Adrian Peterson and Marshawn Lynch.
So I guess 23 or 24 (unless like some of these guys he was 20 years old in high school).
Doesn’t really matter does it? Ward was 27 or so when he was a rook with the Gints. Worth noting tho cuz that’s probably a reason for him falling as any.
Doesn’t have to be a star. He’s going to get an ample chance to compete with Bradshaw and Ware, so who knows
by FreeBradshaw on Apr 26, 2009 1:53 PM EDT up reply actions
yea,
sometimest the age doesn’t mean everything. The mileage, the fact that he aint going to be carrying the ball 300+ times ever with the Giatns
THat’s why I didn’t want Javon Ringer cuz he got most of his yards running with games like 30 rushes for 200 yards and all that.
Brown is going to compete, you may not even here his name, he may be the backup to Jacobs.
Andre Brown didn’t fumble the balll ONCE !!!! in college, so that would either give him the best shot at being the #2 or push Bradshaw to make sure he hangs on the the ball.

Brown and the ACC picks
Anybody else a little worried about all these ACC picks?? — I mean, I love Reese, and I’m sure they factor the conference into their scouting grades, but the ACC is among the worst of all the major conferences, so Nick, Sitjim, Brown…..? Maybe I’m just a pessimist…….
Be careful what you say about the ACC
or else Ed will say you think you are smarter than Jerry Reese. Just kidding Ed!
Seriously though, it is a bit of a concern, but players out of USC and OSU tend to be busts in the NFL, and they both play in typically stronger conferences than the ACC. It is all about the individual player ultimately and how well they play within a team and it’s system.
See? I could be an analyst on TV, I am able to say absolutely nothing while giving an answer.
Spot on
It is all about the individual player ultimately and how well they play. You’re drafting “players” , conferences. If this were the case, the NBA would be 90% ACC.
LT (the real LT)-ACC
Phillip Rivers-ACC
Mario Williams-ACC
Calvin Johnson-ACC
Aaron Curry-ACC
Tiki Barber-ACC
That’s just a small sample (past, present, and future) ACC players.
ACC
Hey, you gotta remember I am a Maryland grad. So, I might have a ‘slight’ ACC bias.
by Ed Valentine on Apr 26, 2009 2:53 PM EDT up reply actions
I think being from one conference or
school makes no difference to why they select the guys.
I think its just a coincidence. The talent around these guys wasn’t as good.
by FreeBradshaw on Apr 26, 2009 2:47 PM EDT up reply actions
Id be more worried if they were all Big 12 or Pac 10 picks
The ACC may be ""weak"", but they are all talented and a lot of the teams play pro-style offenses and have strong defenses, unlike the gimmicky Big 12 and weak defenses in the Pac 10.
No problem with this.
Just cuz teams are weak doesn’t mean therer isn’t talent. It may not even mean they are weak, it may mean parity.

Don't think so

I did call this one the other day … at least that the Giants would take a flier on a late-round QB.

I like Bomar too.
If he doesn’t have that incident at OU, he’d be starting all time, not Bradford..
ANd like Bradford, Bomar is going to take a while, so he comes into a good situation here. A future trade possbyl.
But since Carr is as good as gone next year, then they’ll still have Andre Woodson and Bomar as the #2 and #3 hopefully.

I heard some of these ""experts"" talking about him as the QB to watch in this draft. Him and McGee were 2 of the sleeper QB’s.

How about Duke Robinson, Dannell Ellerbe, and Michael Hamlin……
Throwing it out there…

I like the Bomar pick
I bet if he’d stayed at Oklahoma, he’s a 1st round pick this year. Doesn’t necessarily mean he’s a 1st round talent, but his production would have been off the charts and he wouldn’t have had the character issues which clearly hurt him.
THe Saints got back a 5th rounder from the Giants
not their original one, the Giants one. They grabbed a punter.. So The Saints got Shockey and a punter for a 2nd rounder (Clint Sintim).
It wasn't a direct trade
The eagles traded the one they got from the Giants to the Saints.
So I was just saying the Saints got a 5th essentially from the Giants…and grabbed a Punter.

Orakpo could be very good for the Skins tho
by FreeBradshaw on Apr 26, 2009 4:36 PM EDT up reply actions
agreed
but they have so many needs on both sides of the ball, and I feel like they never have enough picks to make up for it. They seem to draft one really good player each year, but one good player a draft does not a Super Bowl contender make.
Eagles definitely scare me, but I think we’re a better overall team all things considered. Should be a fun season.
True
the good teams build through the draft as you know. The Eagles kept trading down, but still have a bunch of picks. The Cowgirls had no first day picks, and while I have no idea what they are doing they still had 12 picks and if half of them are starters I think they’d be thrilled. The Giants obviously had an incredible draft, I loved every pick.
The Skins seem to only have 1 first day pick every year, then don’t draft againt till the 5th round.
They do seem to hit on more than they miss, and usually when they have 1st day picks they fail a lot (Carlos Rogers is kind of a bust for a #9 pick cuz of injuries, Devin Thomas, USC TE, Malcolm Kelly all didn’t show much in year one)
Its kinda hard to argue with any of these teams cuz while I only like the Gints, all the others have had success to some extent. You’d think the Skins would eventually learn that the draft matters in the middle rounds more, but that’s why they come in last in the division.

Alright, so I'd personally lobby for either ILB or SS here.
Beckwith and Ellerbee are both available at ILB
I don’t know much about the SS options, but I do like Courtney Greene out of Rutgers.

Yea
I can’t beleive Beckwith and Ellerbe are still on the board.
I don’t think there’s an absolute need at ILB cuz of Goff and Blackburn on the team, but to be a special teamer and another competitive guy this late in teh draft it would be nice.
Then again, who the hell knows.

Derrick Pegues

Just looked at the NFL vignette for Bomar.
I’m liking the pick more and more. Only real downside seems to be his accuracy. But he’s a quick, mobile quarterback, very strong, and I absolutely think his off the field issues are not going to be an issue.

Maybe they just needed a player with dreadlocks
If RW is going to be let go, they need a “Predator” on the team.

Stoney Woodson ftw.
One of the better names in football.

Not very promising
Position:
CB
Class:
Senior
School:
South Carolina
Conference:
SEC
Ht., Wt.:
5-11, 190
40 Time:
4.65
BIOGRAPHY: Part-time starter the past three seasons. Finished with 27/4/1 as a senior after 26 tackles the prior year.
POSITIVES: Relatively instinctive defensive back with potential in a zone system. Displays good route recognition, stays with assignments, and quickly locates the pass in the air. Experienced at safety and does a nice job picking up assignments in centerfield.
NEGATIVES: Marginally athletic, lacks a quick break to the throw out of his plant, and does not possess top end speed. Very quick out of his backpedal and prefers to side shuffle off the line.
ANALYSIS: Woodson offers potential as a dime back in a zone system, yet poor size/speed numbers will make it difficult for him at the next level.
PROJECTION: Free Agent
I think cut during training camp, but who knows? Maybe he’ll be surprisingly good on special teams. Plus can play corner and safety.
yea
id say maybe just a player the Giants want to look at in camp. I actualyl though the same of Deandre Wright.
2 guys who probably will be undrafted, but the Gints get an early look i guess.
Neither look like the next Michael Johnson, as MJ was pretty productive in college.
Great first 4 rounds altogether. I love what every pick brings to the team. If anything, Id take a shot and say Nicks is a starter by game one and Andre Brown wins out and replaces D-Ward seamlessly. Sintim is a special teamer, but wins out the SAM by midseason too. By the end of the season he is wreaking havoc on a line that consists of Osi, Tuck, Canty Kiw, and Sintim. (HAVOC!)
As for some more wishful thinking, Beckum forces Gilbride to use some new wrinkles, and Barden shows enough to let us all know that he is indeed the next Vincent Jackson / Brandon Marshall. I think Beatty gets in there too cuz there are some injuries hopefully nothing major, but beatty gets in there.
All wishful thinking of course

Don’t forget Rocky Bernard is still a solid DT that can get a lot done in a platoon and we still have Robbins and Alford (to a lesser extent). Our defense will be insane. Hopefully this completes our offense.
Yea
I was just talking about that D-Line kinda like the one with Strah, Osi, Kiwi and TUck. Not an every down Line of course, just getting a bunch of rushers on the field at the same time. Just now it will be 5 instead of 4……
Bernard, Cofield, Robbins, Alford, ALL are gonna be great for the Gints this year.

Gotta say
I’m very happy with the first 7 picks, but I’m not too thrilled with the last two. Neither guy sounds too promising, I would have preferred to have packaged those picks to either move up this year or get an extra pick in next years draft. Time will tell, I guess.
My guess is they think one of them can contribute as a returner, but thats just my personal opinion.

We all knew
the likelihood of every draft pick making the opening day roster was slim. Every pick brings alot of potential value, and I think this year will continue the line of great drafts at tough positions that keep us in the hunt every year. My only thought on the two jobbers at the end is that is that Dockery probably will not be around after next year. We have three good young talents at CB, one of these new guys might be ready to fill the fourth CB shoes in two years. If not, no loss here.

apparently
at least DeAndre Wright is FAR from just a middling 6th rounder, just another Reese pick that no one knows about.

The other guy
with Wright, Glover Quin, went a few rounds before Wright, but apparently both were very good. I guess we’ll find out. He’s not a small corner either so who knows…
