Draft Day finally arrives ... here's the plan
Today is finally the day for the 2009 NFL Draft to begin. Here is the coverage plan for now, though, like the draft itself things can change during the day.
This will serve as your Open Thread to carry you right up until the draft begins at 4 p.m. At that point, there will be a new Open Thread to carry you through the first round.
I will probably run new posts each time the Giants make a selection -- or a trade. Please refrain from creating your own 'Fanposts' each time the Giants make a selection, or you have a thought about what another team does.
I don't want to discourage anybody, but I don't want to end up with a half-dozen 'Fanposts' about the same thing. Keep your thoughts in the threads provided, and that way the comments and discussions won't splinter all over the place. I will be popping in and out throughout the day, as will 'jrs,' to monitor and update the proceedings.
Remember to also stop by SBN's draft site, Mocking the Draft, for updates throughout the day. The NFL has -- for the first time -- granted SBN a couple of credentials for the weekend (not to me, sadly -- boo-hoo!), but MTD will have some updates directly from the scene of the draft throughout the day.
[NOTE: If you are in the D.C. area, check out ESPN 980 for draft coverage during the day. Various SBN bloggers, including yours truly, will be doing spots with 980 throughout the day as the draft unfolds.]

Finally!
It seems like we’ve been waiting forever.
Already the real draft is very different than our mock & it hasn’t even started yet … Stafford to the Lions.
In a way
anticipating what Jerry Reese will do in the office is as exciting as anticipating what Eli Manning will do on the field. Go Giants!
Actually both are predictable
Eli wins and Reese makes good draft picks. :-)
The draft not coming on until 4 sucks

I read
from Vacchiano that the giants would make one last push for bray bray with the 2 and 5
It's not easy being Giants fan in Philly.. but it sure is satisfying

On getting Edwards....
I would think a #2 and #5 would suffice. I heard the Caedinals will take a 2nd rounder and other considerations for Boldin

Not exactly
I might be on a couple of times it all depends on how the draft goes, when the Giants pick, when they call me. All that stuff. If there is an Edwards trade I assume I will be on shortly after it is announced.

why is the draft on so late?
I can’t remember the draft ever starting so late in the day. The first round itself is going to take 5-6 hours. That’s 10 pm before we even get to the 2nd round.
Is it just me or is this draft really late in the day.
Draft time...
It started at 3pm last year… I thought it was late too until I heard from ESPN Radio it was pushed back only 1 hour from last year

Come on, Braylon!
Okay, just so I understand it... in your wildest fantasy, you are in hell. And you are co-running a bed and breakfast with the devil.
Wish list
1.Trade 2nd and 5th for Edwards
2.Get Nicks at 29
3.Get a good linebacker with the 2nd pick
I was just thinking the same thing
I even sent Rich (NFL Network) a twit since he’s working that live on the side today.
We’ve been talking about needing a new #1 but since we lost both starts, I think we need a new #1 and a rookie.
I would even love to get Brian Robiskie with our 2nd 2nd round pick.
the wait is killing me. I couldn’t even sleep last night
Thats what was great about living in AZ, the draft in the old days would be on at 9 or 10 in the morning

lol
I was at the barber shop this morning and we all were complaining about not being able to wake up and watch.. this wait definitely sucks, i’m going to take a nap now that i finally replaced the blower motor in my AC handler on top of my roof.. and if you know what its like in Florida with out AC you feel my pain…
I definitely feel your pain, we were living in a house in Dania last summer with a bad AC unit that barely worked and windows that leaked. Life sucks in SoFla without AC
LOL, it was haircut day for me too

Giants pick
Hey if the Gmen go to pick in round one and Aaron Maybin is there do we take him? Should we? I really like the guy alot and think he will be able to switch to OLB does any think he can be a OLB in a 4-3 defense?? Just want to know what people think of him.. listening to him talk out of all the OLB/DE or LB for that matter i think he is really well spoken and seems like an all around good guy and very smart young man, if we can’t get a proven VET at WR, like peeps here have said, I’m all for having a sick defense just overload the O-Lines and kill everyones QBs.. but would or could Maybin fit with us.. thanks
I like him too
Obviously, I’d rather have Curry, but that’s not going to happen. It might take Maybin some time to adjust, but I think that pick would be worth the risk. He’s a quality guy on and off the field.
It will be interesting to see what happens at LB for the Gmen this year now that the LB coach is the defensive coordinator.

Curry
Yeah would be impossible to get him but wouldnt mind it.. Although i watched him on espn special with Maybin and really it seemed like Curry’s had an issue, dont know if he was nervous, but he seems to be one of those typical meat head guys thats a great player but i’m not sure if he is smart like LT was… the way they sound and their choice of words(plus the fact Maybin didnt studder like curry) just makes me feel like Maybin might be a better all around player then curry who could end up being a one trick pony, i dont know that though, i think both are going to have growing pains but i think Maybins intelligence will make him a little more servicable and longer career then i think Curry will have.. either way both area beast and will wreck havoc on QBs very shortly here…
LT smart
Not talking off the field with that statement, just ment football and reading the run and the QBs eyes and being able to go from side line to side line and actually make the play, thats alot to think about at one time and Curry might just be thinking KILL QB KILL QB and not sure his vocab goes passed that in his own head lol i don’t have a clue its just a vibe i got from them 2 lol
Do you guys think this DHB thing is a ploy?
Do you think JR is saying they want to move up to get them to pressure Clevland or even Arizona? It seems very un-Giant like to swap a 1st round pick and give up a 2nd and 5th just to draft an unproven WR who will probabbly not make much impact in year one while they could give up the same for a proven WR. Even if they were to draft a WR instead of trade fore one wouldn’t Kenny Britt be a better fit, he’s bigger, stronger, and a better route runner. We have speed in Hixon, Manningham & Moss we need a big physical reciever who can beat up guys like Terrance Newman and Assante Samuel not another guy who’s probabbly going to spend most of training camp with a Quad injury.
Nope
I think DHB is far from a ploy. The Giants may have a few guys who seem like speed guys, but we all know Hixon and even Steve Smith while both are pretty fast, both don’t exactly have that blazing speed that the Giants are missing.
The Tim Carter comparisons are legit, and Id be afraid at that. But the reality is that the guy has to stay healthy.
If he stays healthy then still ends up like Williamson, then fine, the guy is a bust. But I don’t think there are any legit questions that he can’t catch.
He is not just a straight line speed guy either, he is very quick too. Id love to end up with DHB.

Yes sir
I agree, it is very un-Giant like so i don’t know what to think but they definitely have hurt my brain this passed week, none of this makes any sense, so i’m just going to wait and see what actually happens and hope for the best… who knows maybe DHB has a chip on his shoulder and they interviewed the kid and fell in love with him but you can’t help your position at all if you let everyone know you want to trade up for him… That only hurts you if thats the truth.. DHB might drop to 29 so.. And i think Britt is a better fit too, but there are alot of WRs in this draft like him, who knows maybe we draft 2 rookie wide outs…
FreeBradshaw
I think I’m just afraid of another Tim Carter type and my biggest concern about DHB is he was a track star and thats how he started playing football. He’s relied on speed and nothing else, don’t get me wrong he was a great college player, but world class speed may work in college but you need more in the NFL. The NFL scouts seem to fall in love with these really fast guys and start hyping them up but it seems as if these types of guys seem to struggle at the NFL level like Ted Ginn, Peter Warrick, and Troy Williamson. If he was there at 29 and the Giants took him fine, I’d still prefer Britt butt JR is slightly more qualified than me to make that choice, I guess I just don’t agree with trading up to get him when you can trade the same amount to get a proven WR with some size and big play ability. I guess we’ll disagree here but because I’m a big RU fan I saw a lot of Kenny Britt over the last few years and he was always so much more physically dominate than all of the DBs he played against and I think he might be more impactful as a rookie but the hell do I know it’s a total crapshoot.
Which is why
In Reese We Trust. He knows more about evaluating football talent than any of us ever will.
by Ed Valentine on Apr 25, 2009 2:25 PM EDT up reply actions
Exactly
This is why if Reese likes the upside and is sold that the risk on guys like DHB or even Percy Harvin or Jeremy Maclin, is worth it to yea, even move up in the draft to get them, then Im all for it.
Yes guys like Nicks and Britt and even Robiskie seem like more polished WR, but I don’t think there’s any doubt they aren’t as athletic as guys like DHB or harvin or Maclin.
It all depends, cuz for all I know, Hakeem Nicks or Britt or Robiskie could be the real game breakers.
All I know, is that in Reese I trust. Even if he does somthing that may have me scratching my head (doubtful as it seems), I’ll figure that he knows what he’s doing. I would be surprised to see him trade up in the draft when he has been so adamant about not giving up the 1st rounder (of course, that is if he DOESN"T give up the first rounder to move up??)
But if he does trade up, and gives up a bunch of picks, I’ll assume he knows what he’s doing, even if I don’t understand why at the time.
by FreeBradshaw on Apr 25, 2009 2:53 PM EDT up reply actions
Great points guys
Reese knows more but it’s still fun to pretend to be a GM. It should be an interesting day unlike last year when we all knew if Kenny Philips was there the G-Men would take him. I would’nt be surprised if the Giants do nothing today, draft the best talent available regardless of position in the first round and then work a deal for Braylon Edwards in June right before mini-camp like with Shockey last year. All the talk during the draft last year was a 2nd and a 5th for Shockey, the Saints didn’t budge and Reese stayed patient and got the deal done 2 months later. Wouldn’t be nice to draft a Britt or DHB then sign Edwards a few months later?!
Yea absolutely
I’ve been one thinking that even if the Giants stick with whoever is on the roster at WR, not even drafting anyone, that the giants will be fine at WR. All their guys are all young and should be getting better. Especially since guys like Moss and Manningham really haven’t had a true shot at playing time, they can’t be counted out either, as well as guys like Micah Rucker.
That said, if the Giants get 2 replacements, essentially for the positions (maybe not impact) of losing their 2 starting WR in Toomer and Burress, then that’s great.
The thing about Edwards is that the Giants being so good this year, they don’t really need him right now. He’s a FA next year and baring the Browns franchising him he could eventually end up on the GInts, albeit a year later.
