KG and TO
There's a great article on KG in the sports section of today's NY Times by a blogger named Glenn Warciski. It's replete with stats for his whole career and contains lots of detail re last year's Giants season, including JR comments on that loss to the Iggles at the end of the year,
I'm a computer illiterate, so I can't post it on BBV,but trust someone else will. Warning to KG haters: Warciski makes him look like the second coming of Lombardi.
There's another article on TO and why he'll bee a good addition to the team that picks him up.

I saw this and I’m glad someone other than me brought it to light. The article can be found here. Gilbride is an easy target every time a play fails. In fact, any coordinator is. Every OC makes calls he would like to take back during a game. I have repeatedly said, though, that KG has to get some credit for the good things the Giants have done the past two seasons. How soon we forget the days of John Hufnagel or, God forbid, THE FUMBLE!!
I'm glad everybody has a chance to read it now and that it has created such heated discussion.
I was surprised by KG’s outstanding career stats. I also found enightening JR’s comment that basically placed the fault for the playoff loss to the Eagles on the D (although Warciski blames Eli’s errant throws.) JR’s comment explains the emphasis he has placed to date on shoring up the D.
57, you’re just not gonna let go of advoacating a return to the 3-4, are you? I admire your tenacity, but it just doesn’t seem to be in the cards.

He does makes some points but it still doesn’t explain why KG goes all Mike Martz at times.
Agreed
But, as angry as I was w/KG after the Eagles game I think he takes too much heat. Sometimes players simply don’t get the job done.
I've said many times
Gilbride is not perfect, but we could do alot worse. I do think he gets too pass happy sometimes.

?? worse than the playcalling that cost us the EAGLEs playoff game????
I’d tell you to look at his record in SD, but you’d just blame it on the personnel and THEY didn’t execute his game plan, blah, blah, blah…
FUNNY. Spagnolo comes in, and the defense becomes OFF-THE-SCALE???
BUT, the offense under KG keeps settling for FGs???
( why do you con’t to defend this guy??? The SB run was INSPITE of HIM!!)
Gilbride isn't all that awful
he just needs to make some adjustments to the offense.. the washington game had an almost perfect game plan and he made good adjustments on the fly. He didn’t do well in the Eagles game. Don’t try to discredit him for the super bowl, we controlled the clock that game and although they didn’t score points.. they kept the ball out of the hands of the greatest offense in league history.

Games aren't won be "Time of Possession"
OK. the guy isn’t AWFUL, AWFUL
but..PLEASE explain our inability to score TDs in the Green Zone???
i'd make the argument
that the Giants offense was more clutch in the super bowl than the defense.

no actually that they covered the D's ass
by scoring a touchdown with too little time for NE to do anything

TDs
I have said this many, many times. Sometimes it’s a bad play call. But, sometimes it’s a missed block, bad throw, poor pass route, drop or penalty. Sometimes players just don’t get the job done. The Giants couldn’t have done that bad a ob, since they were 3rd in the league in scoring.

Yes, you and I have been here before
so I won’t go over all of it again. In my heart I believe the Giants offense hasn’t fired on all cylinders yet. There’s ALWAYS a quarter’s worth of misfiring. When things are going wrong I and others are yelling at the TV “why did he call that? "When are they goin hurry up?” I think we have the talent to be WAY more successful then we have been and I just want to see it. I am sick watching them let teams HANG AROUND and make the end of the game nerve-racking. My nerves are shot!!!! (or can’t you tell??)
We could do worst than KG, but HE could perform better too!!!
TC
So, as much as I love TC my question is how much of this do you pin on the head coach? If he wants the hurry-up all he has to do is tell KG he wants it. Same w/pass-first or run-first. He has to sign off on the plan.

Sure, there's plenty of blame to go around
He isn’t the most flexible guy in the league and should take some blame for his subordinate not performing as well as we’d like. Hopefully all of this great advice is secretly being absorbed by the NYG staff as they monitor this site. Then we’ll be talking about how well the O performed.
and THEY’LL take all the credit!!!
I'm not quite as adament about it as you are but I do agree
that KG is not in the upper tier of great offensive minds. I like guys like Todd Haley who seem to be one step ahead of opposing defenses. KG is just not dynamic enough with the talent he has been given. We could do better.

when they played head to head
Gilbride outschemed haley. We’re forgetting that the team scored almost 27 points a game this year people. It is way more Paxagun’s fault than it is Gilbride’s.

No, Gilbride didn't outscheme Haley, Spags did.
Who on this board wouldn’t have Haley in place of KG?
by giant fan since 57 on Mar 7, 2009 8:52 PM EST reply actions
Don't forget that Haley didn't have the kind of running game to make him look
good like Gilbride did. Haley had a much more difficult assignment all year.

I don't know..
I kinda got disenchanted with Spags because toward the end of the season he was sending at least 5 on every play and we weren’t getting pressure on the quarterback.. I would have rather seen the team getting picked apart in some soft zone than giving up big plays. I don’t like blitzing and if i had my way they’d do it 10 or 15 percent of the time. That’s why i’m looking forward to something similar to the four aces next year. Osi, Kiwi, Tuck, Canty the four amigos

there is no doubt that blitzing can be dangerous.
Most of the year Spags got it right though. A case could be made that Pierce was the weak link as the year wore on, making it too easy for tight ends and backs to blow by him for easy yards. But I think Spags did get a bit predictable as the year went by.
I think the Giants might want to consider a change to the 3-4 defense that in my opinion gives us a look that is much harder to read. I realize we lack the linebackers to achieve success in the 3-4 but perhaps with Canty now a Giant and a few good picks at interior linebacker we could think about it in the near future.

Maybe not..
we’ve already got the perfect outside linebackers….tall rangy guys who can run like hell and still stop the run. Our secondary is right for the 3-4. We just need two big inside linebackers and a nose tackle and we are ready to return to the glory years of the mid 80’s to early 90’s.

we're in the middle of the 2000 glory days
why in the world would you want to change everything now??
To remain stagnent is to allow our foes to game plan more successfully against us.
We must constantly keep them off guard. In my opinion the 3-4 affords us an oportunity to be even more formidable on defense. It might afford us the opportunity to garnish the one goal that has so far eluded the G-men….the dynasty label.

who’s that Patton? MacArthur? (powerful stuff!!!)
I agree that you can’t be predictable ( i.e. KG sorry, just tying it back to the thread…)
but we’re on our way to destroying other teams OL and QB. Now isn’t the time to change, it’s the time to CHARGE and take NO QUARTERS!!!!
Kill anyone who THINKS of touching the ball. When it starts to become ineffective >>> then plan B. But for now lets use the weapons we have and win another (or 2) SUPERBOWL rings
It does sound a little like Winston Churchill, doesn't it? LOL
It just seemed to me last year that our pass rush became less effective as the year wore on. And when you blitz and don’t at least get in the quarterback’s face you are asking for trouble. I don’t buy the argument that our lineman got tired. These guys are elite athletes in the prime of their careers. When you bring the same defensive look to the line of scrimage time after time the enemy is going to find ways to negate it.
That’s why I suggest that we not remain stagnent. I know everybody is tired of listening to me harp on it but I believe the 3-4 defense executed correctly is more flexible and less predictable.

You are stubborn, but this is a losing argument for you. It isn’t going to happen. I don’t buy your argument about the same defensive look. Spagnuolo was terrific at disguising where blitzes were coming from, moving guys around on the line, coming up with exotic packages and things like that. The giants defense was as far from stagnant as you can get. If you play a 3-4, you are lined up in a 3-4 every play — the same look every time. There is no motivation to change right now, and the Giants would not have loaded up on linemen if they were only going to play 3 at a time.
57, they were worn down by the end of the season:
Osi out; Tuck, bone spurs; Cofield and Robbins injured; Kiwi’s ass dragging. JR’s move so far indicate that the 3-4 isn’t being considered.
Well you are right since the people who make the defensive systems
seem happy with what we’ve got. And I am not saying that our blitzes haven’t been effective.
I do think that the blitz packages we send include more safety and corners than would be the case if we had four good linebackers. Guys like Big Ben and McNabb just flick those guys off and have made us pay for sending them. In the end I guess it just boils down to personnel.
