Wednesday Walk Around the NFL: 3-4-09
Good Morning and Happy Wednesday Giants fans, It is that time again, so let's take a look at the stories making headlines around the NFL:
- Remember Fred Lane? He was the running back for the Carolina Panthers who was shot and killed by his wife in July of 2000, and after serving 6 years , his widow walked out of prison yesterday.
- The Kansas City Star says Bill Belichick didn't do the Chiefs any favors when he traded them Matt Cassel and Mike Vrabel.
- Brett Favre's truck just sold on Ebay.35 grand, and he'll sign the dashboard!!!! Oy.
- Greg Cosell from The Sporting News talks about Ladanian Tomlinson losing a step.
- On second thought, the Broncos aren't looking to trade Jay Cutler.
- Steve Wyche on NFL.com has a list of some of the top free agents still available. Although you can cross Derrick Ward off his list.
- Tim Graham at ESPN.com says maybe Jason Taylor should go back where he came from.
- According to the Sporting News, Ray Lewis made "exorbitant demands" from the Jets.
- Vinnie Iyer takes a look at 10 intriguing free agents under 30.
Final NFL Thoughts:
- The Redskins spent $100M on a guy who hasn't played a full season since 2002. But somehow, Dan "The Boy Prince" Snyder wants you to believe these aren't the "same old Redskins".
- I don't believe for a minute that the Giants offered Haynesworth 80 mil, as he claimed during a radio interview. It just doesn't seem like the Giants style at all.
Final Un-NFL Thoughts:
- I have a really bad feeling about Johan Santana's elbow.
- "Lost" has been great so far this year, but I have less idea what's going on than ever.
Remember, tomorrow is the 3rd installment in our "Great Moments in Giants Stadium History" series, and I know many of you will enjoy tomorrow's look back at some of the "glory days" Giants Stadium has seen. That sound you hear is the hint I dropped.

Lost at sea.
How come there’s been no mention of the NFL players lost off of Florida. I would think that losing ANY player in the league would be worth mention. Their not GIANTS but the four of them were football players.
What a sad way to go. A nice day fishing turns into a horror story.
Best of luck to the survivor and the other men’s families!!!
Honestly
I figure you guys are seeing enough stories about that everywhere else. What I try and do is bring you guys some of the stories you aren’t hearing. You can’t turn on any news or sports station without hearing about it, so I figured I would bring you some of the other news stories. That doesn’t mean we can’t discuss it.
The stories we are hearing down here (I live in Florida, for those of you that don’t know) are that apparently Marquis Cooper had bought the boat, but had not gotten the hang of it on the Gulf waters, and that this trip was going to be his last one on it as Captain. Whether that is true or not, I don’t know, its just what I am hearing on local news.

JRS: It wasn't meant to be a slam
I was just surprised that it never came up. I for one, don’t get a newspaper or spend much time watching the (bad) news. I work on the principal, NO NEWS is GOOD NEWS. I won’t have know if the wife didn’t mention it. Thanks for your input on the matter. If I did watch the news they would have told me how he was a proficient sea captain, with years of experience…
Every time I know the facts, I can barely recognize their version as the same story. They’re so far off it’s like they do it on purpose!?!?!?
No offense taken...
No worries

A Denver fan describes Jay Cutler
“He is constantly proving himself to be a mental midget and isn’t beloved at all by fans here. Guys got a rocket arm connected to a pea brain. Mix in an ego the size of China and his utter lack of social awareness and you’ve got a recipe for both short and long-term failure.”
I don't understand why everyone's hating on him.
I’d be upset too if the team that I led (and face it, Jay and his passing attack were the sole reason Denver did well at all) the past year tried to shop me for Matt Cassell, who had only done well in New England because of his supporting cast and because the expectations for him to fail after Brady was injured were enormous?

Giants offered Haynesworth 80 mil
I didn’t believe it either, but in an AP article on ESPN.com, Reese admitted the Giants made a serious offer to Haynesworth of a little under $80 mil.
Interesting ...
it seems very out of character for the Giants. Could this possibly have been a ploy to drive up the price on the ’Skins?
Also, they probably were offering less in guarantees than what the ‘Skins did ($41 million). I think all of the teams that bid on him do not expect that he’ll see his whole contract and his real contract is what was guaranteed. In this scenario it might not have been too out of character for them.
funny how
Fred Lane’s wife kills him and basically gets a sentence that a medium-level drug offender would get.
it’s sad that in our country’s legal system there is such a double standard with female-male crime. i’m not saying that Fred Lane’s wife wasn’t abused by her husband, if so, she absolutely should get a softer sentence (probably not six measley years though). but it is disturbing to me that anytime we see these wife-murders-husband cases, they cry abuse and are rewarded with a short prison stay and a book deal.

isn't it also funny
that the comparitive number of men to women executed is 100 to 1. Women have the wife batterer defense.. if a man brings up that defense he gets laughed at all the way until they put the needle in his arm.
It's not easy being Giants fan in Philly.. but it sure is satisfying

Just be sure she
hasn’t taken out an insurance policy on your life
You're going to have an even worse feeling about Johan Santana's elbow
when the Yankees face him later this year.
