Giants Notebook

A few Giants notes on a Tuesday

  • Bridgeport resident and author Steve Miller thought he had a good idea: Bring Plaxico Burress to Bridgeport to talk to kids about the dangers of carrying guns. But his idea has mostly fallen on deaf ears.
  • Albert Haynesworth said during a radio interview yesterday that the Giants offered him an $80M contract. Not so, said Giants GM Jerry Reese in a conference call today. Reese had a lot to say on a variety of issues, and told the media that Matthias Kiwanuka will remain a Defensive End.
  • RealGMFootball.com takes a look at some of the offensive options available to the Giants come draft time.

Finally, from USA Today, a medical update:

The progress report on Pro Bowl DE Osi Umenyiora, who missed all of last season with a preseason knee injury, is hopeful. He says he is about 85 percent back and that his rehab program will get him fully prepared for minicamp. RB Brandon Jacobs had minor knee surgery and says it's 100 percent now. DE Robert Henderson (foot) hurt himself as a rookie in training camp and is healed now. OT Guy Whimper, also with a foot injury, should be fine. WR-KR David Tyree (knee) is ready to play, but there is some doubt that the Giants will keep him.

From "The Catch" to "The Door"

I know it’s a business, but David was our there when they needed him and with Yosemite Sam still an unknown and Toomer on the next episode of House Hunters (choose #4….choose #4 dang it) David may be needed again.

He was hurt most if not all of last year and so unless we draft 2 WRs (which I think we’ll do) we might need to welcome him back.

He will get his shot

With the clearout at the top of the WR rotation, he will definitely get an opportunity in camp just like all the other young guys.

Jerry Reese said...
(On WRs on roster now) "We have good players at that position. Who knows who’s going to step out of the shadows and be the guy? "
“… we have good players at the position right now and we can go into the fall with these guys..”

I hope you're right

He certainly has the right physical attributes. But it is a bit of a long shot. If it does pan out, that will only further cement Reese’s position as a supreme talent evaluator.

IF he makes it on to TV in a game

The announcers are gonna tell one of those “human interest” stories on him.

“Undrafted, girl killed by a drunk driver, started a MADD program in her name…”
I really wish the guy the best for him and our NEW YORK GIANTS!!!!

P.S

Did you ever see the video ETVal found on him playing at Eastern Illinios?

He’s # 80. Look at the size of him in the link to the video

Still it's Eastern Illinois.

On the other hand, those Illinois state schools have turned out some studs (especially BJ.) I’m high on Rucker, too.

I love the salukis..

But lets be realistic.. Brandon could have played anywhere he wanted if he didn’t go to Auburn. He just picked the wrong school at the wrong time. He was a beast at SIU though and still played in a rotation of three guys.. So Brandon has never been a feature back in college or the pros.. very interesting. Bart Scott also went to SIU.

It's not easy being Giants fan in Philly.. but it sure is satisfying

Walt Frazier was a Saluki.

There was a lot of controversy (still is today) about the Knicks picking him over Dave Bing from ‘cuse. They’re both in the HOF.

I spent

four years of my life in Carbondale. I would go to the football and basketball games and sit with the old timers and just ask questions about guys like Walt and what Kurt Warner and Rodney Harrison were like in college. I’m only 20 so i don’t remember any of it but i consider myself enough of a student of sports history that I know quite a bit. Brandon was quite something in college but they had another back who went to the same community college as him who i thought was better. Outside of Brian Westbrook, this other guy Muhammad Abdulqaadir is the best college running back i’ve ever seen. E:60 did a story about him and why he thinks he didn’t make it to the NFL. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_TJvHpTNAu0&feature=related

One thing to keep in mind about the draft

last year everyone applauded the Redskins for taking 2 big receivers in their first 3 picks (Malcolm Kelly and Devin Thomas), and neither of them had good rookie years. If big guys like Rucker were ready to perform at a high level next year, they’d be top 10 picks. The reason guys like that drop is b/c they’re projects who probably won’t have an impact right away. Just something to think about.

ABSOLUTELY!!!

And that is precisely why I am so hopeful, because he’s been through it before. He went through training camp last year w/ the Steeler’s and even said in an interview that he was tired by the time he got to KC. He has experienced the NFL season, which shocks every rookie because they’re pretty much done by Thanksgiving in college and have all of December to play in the NFL. This year when he gets to mini camp he’s going know to pace himself. There’s a ton of things he’ll know that a rookie won’t understand. He may be cut again, but he will definitely have a hugh advantage.

I have tried to get people to consider the fact that you can’t just draft a top WR and stick him into Plaxico’s spot, but they keep yelling for this guy or that. Maybe they’ll help in the future, but who’s gonna help this year??

Wait, hold on, I'm confused

You’re saying you like Micah Rucker?

by JoshNY on Mar 4, 2009 5:13 PM EST up reply actions

I still don't think

that a I-AA guy would ever be drafted in the top 10 unless he transferred from another school where he’d proven himself at. Look at the great I-AA players in the past.. Westbrook, Flacco, Rodgers-Cromartie, Jerry Rice, Dave Meggett
