A-Rod or Plaxico -- who is the bigger idiot?
A question for you today. Who is the biggest idiot in New York sports, Alex Rodriguez of the New York Yankees or Plaxico Burress of the New York Giants?
Vote in the poll at the end of the post to let me know what you think.
The Burress' rap sheet
Suspended by the Pittsburgh Steelers for missing practice in May of 2004. Fined for several violations in October.
Suspended by the Giants for violating team rules in September, 2008.
Accidentally shoots himself in the thigh in November, 2008, ending his season and -- probably -- killing the Giants; chance to repeat as Super Bowl champion.
Twice had police called to his home for domestic disturbances in 2008.
According to Wikipedia, Burress has been sued at least nine times since 2000. Two of those suits have taken place this year.
Recently ticketed for several traffic infractions in Florida.
The Rodriguez' rap sheet
Recently admitted steroid use from 2001-2003 after having claimed he was clean in a televised interview with Katie Couric.
Famously criticized Derek Jeter in a 2001 Esquire article saying "he's never had to lead."
Opted out of his contract with the Yankees in the middle of the 2007 World Series, only to come back to the team for more money later.
Called 'A-Fraud' in new book by ex-manager Joe Torre.
Hit .133 in 2006 playoffs and .071 in 2007.
Obviously, these two are 'idiots' for different reasons. They are, however, the most villified players currently on the New York sports scene.
Which one do you think is worse? This poll is also going to run over at Pinstripe Alley. I am anxious to see if there is a difference in the result.

wow!! I can't believe you guys let me get away with that cheap shot at the Yankees !!??
I was just looking to stir the pot this morning.
SHOOTING YOURSELF does take the cake!!!! Though I too, still voted for A-rod
Accidentally shooting ones self in the midst of a Super Bowl Defense
Is dumber than willfully injected one’s self with steroids; the latter is a deliberate act with forethought and planning, where as the other is a moment of sheer stupidity.
Okay, just so I understand it... in your wildest fantasy, you are in hell. And you are co-running a bed and breakfast with the devil.
Regardless of how stupid the shooting was
in comparison to Aroid, Plaxico is the better option. He is clutch and he has won the big one. That alone makes him more bearable than Aroid. On top of that, if he is put on probation and allowed to play, he makes the Giants the favorites for the SuperBowl.
Therefore, an idiot that wins is less stupid than an idiot that takes riods and still loses.
In defense of Plaxico
While Plaxico grinded out the 2007 season with an injured knee no one reported how many fines he had for lateness that year. No one talked about how he was “disrespecting authority” when he was killing Al Harris.
Everyone forgets that Ernie Accorsi wrote in his book about how much of a great teammate Plaxico Burress is and how shocked he was that he was so different from the media reports. Now that Burress has committed the stupidest act in the history of athletics, we have to remember that it was just that. A stupid act. It wasn’t tragic like Ray Lewis being involved with the murder of a human being.
As Giants fans we are mad that he cost us an opportunity to repeat but the fact is that while Burress is an idiot, the Giants didn’t win without him and wouldn’t have won without him in 2007.
God allows things like this to happen to let people realize that you are one mistake away from your life being flipped. One day you could be described as an “aggressive go-getter” and the next moment you could be “an overbearing know-it-all” and get sent to the unemployment line.
Plax should be grateful he ended up being called an idiot for his actions because it could be much worse. For 2009 I hope he’s called a football player and not a convict.
ARod in the clutch
Overall: PA 9076, .306/.389/.578, OPS .967
High Leverage: PA 1626, .305/.393/.582, OPS .975 (+.08)
RISP: PA 2602, .303/.404/.553, OPS .957 (-.10)
Close & Late: PA 1207, .279/.375/.530, OPS .905 (-.62)
Postseason: PA 166, .279/.361/.483, OPS .844 (-.123)
Just by comparison, Captain Clutch:
Overall: PA 9093, .316/.387/.458, OPS .845
High Leverage: PA 1462, .327/.408/.448, OPS .856 (.11)
RISP: PA .311/.405/.434, OPS .838 (-.07)
Close & Late: PA .289/.387/.420, OPS .806 (-.39)
Postseason: PA 554, .309/.377/.469, OPS .846 (.1)
Both are slightly better in high leverage situations, both are slightly worse with Runners in Scoring Position, both are a fair amount worse late in close games but are still pretty good. The difference is that Jeter is almost exactly the same player in the postseason as he is in the regular season, while ARod is significantly worse in the postseason than he is in the regular – though it should be noted that “significantly worse” for ARod turns him into…Derek Jeter. Of course, ARod has a much smaller postseason sample size than Jeter does – he was absolutely brilliant in his first 3 postseasons. Not including his 2 ABs in ‘95 as a September call-up, he was a career .337/.402/.594 (OPS .996) postseason hitter, going through the end of the ’04 ALCS against Boston. His next 2 postseasons were dreadful and his most recent one was simply bad, but does that completely rule him out as a “clutch” player? If you look through Jeter’s postseason career, he’s had way more than 3 poor series, I count at least 8 “un-clutch” performances. The difference is he’s had much more opportunity to hide those in his career than ARod has.
Sorry, this has nothing to do with the ARod vs. Plaxico debate, but I get annoyed when people call ARod “unclutch” – and I’m not even an ARod or a Yankees fan.
LOL. I feel the same when that say that about David Wright
Good point. Aroid hasnt won but he is kinda clutch
I don't see how opting out of his contract
makes A Rod an idiot. It seems like that would make the Yankees idiots.
Having said that, I did vote for him, out of spite, more than anything.
Save the neck for me, Clark.
Plax >>>> ARod
Agreed on that point. They both hurt their teams, but only one of them had the potential to hurt others in the process of their stupidity … that’s Plaxico. The gun could have gone off at anyone. Imagine if the bullet had hit Pierce instead?
I voted for A-Rod
because he just doesn’t seem to understand why people criticize him
It's not easy being Giants fan in Philly.. but it sure is satisfying

That's the thing
A-Rod is not a bad guy. He just doesn’t seem to understand dealing w/people very well.

Plaxico
seems to understand getting along with people.. but his emotional maturity is probably that of a 13 or 14 year old. Also.. if he didn’t know what drugs he was really taking than he’s absolutely and idiot because it could have been cyanide and he wouldn’t have the slightest clue.

"...doesn't seem to understand why...," etc
Hoya, Ed—Plax does?
Hoya, Ed
Scratch that. Misread it. Plax certainly seems to get along with people better than G. A-Rod’s a true phenom, in a bubble since he was eighteen, maybe younger. No excuse, but it’s hard not to see the world through distorted lenses for anyone like that. Think of Kobe and some of those guys who go to the NBA straight out of high school. It’s a great credit to James that he has always seemed so mature and comes across as a nice guy.
Drugs
I think shooting your self with a horrible drug like steroids is way worse then shooting yourself with a gun that you had for protection.. A-Rod is a bigger douche, he stole money from the Yankees by falsifying numbers, plus he and those other 104 punks ruined baseballs integrity… I’m sorry but he also had Frosty Tips in his hair.. did you miss that, it might be the biggest crime against society lol A-Rod is the bad guy hands down, Burress is just immature with a bad lawyer has a Wife, he needs new counsel..
Plax the "G-Unit"
I think the biggest missed point on Plax is thinking he was carrying for “protection” (he was in a club, not a back alley). To his immature mind, that gun was just a prop – completing the wannabe gangsta image he somehow sees as how to enjoy his financial success. Carrying a loaded gun in your shorts as a fashion accessory ? Now that has got to be the bigger douche …
After further review
Reading what everone has said on here it has scewed my opinion although i do believe Football players are targets i.e. Sean Taylor(and the list is very big) Javon Walker his buddy in Denver, it goes on, They are all immature and being at the clubs puts them in that situation but its not fair they can’t lead normal lifes, i go clubbing all the time strip clubs and all but never feel in danger becuase i got maybe 200 bucks at most not many people are targeting me i am not flashy with a 40g chain on but if Plax did have a carriers permit then this is a non issue, he has one in florida and so do i, i dont carry mine at all though the class and permit was 150 bucks why not get it if you do own a gun.
I’m off track point is i agree with what everyone as said, what both these guys did is against the law but plaxico’s crime wouldn’t have been a crime if he had went through the proper proceedure as to A-Rod not only did he smuggle illegal drugs into the country but he injected them there by stealing 250million dollars and ruining his legacy and sport.. Thats something to think about, Plax didnt shoot anyone else and he was lucky for that but his crime with just a simply carriers permit would no longer be a crime, A-Rod’s to me was worse but they both are MORONS…
Sorry for the blabber…
Player Hater ?
My 13 Year-Old had a great comment: “Plaxico is a player, but his gun was a ‘player hater’ …” LOL
hey! the tables have been turned!
unfortuntely DJ is actually very savy, making him that much more insufferable for us yankee haters. but i really can’t argue that he is a dumbo like plax. i think plaxico’s stupidity should be treated like any other disability. he was born disadvantaged and we should not hold that against him.
HELLO HELLO MR WILPON. WE WANT THE MANSION NOT THE CONDO.
