Around SBN: NFL Roundtable: Which Draft Pick Is Most Likely To Bust?

Umm ... forget what I said earlier. The Giants have signed Chris Canty for 6 years and $42 million. I just got home, flipped on the laptop and saw that. Un-freakin-believable!! Maybe Fred Robbins days as a Giant are numbered.

It sure seems that way

Love Robbins, but he was injured quite a bit last year after such a good start. Maybe he will be part of a deal for a WR? I can dream I suppose.

Defense Defense Defense

Defense wins championships. The Steelers proved that last year with their less than stellar offense but dominating D. We may still be able to keep Robbins, the cap went up by 4 million.

I can’t wait to see our defense next season.

I guess this means the Giants are going to concentrate on the offense when it comes to the draft?

by John W on Mar 1, 2009 7:23 PM EST reply actions

Giants had around $20 million in cap space, I believe

these 3 signings use about $16. They have to deal with Eli’s contract, maybe upgrade at WR, and sign all their draft picks. So, someone is going to have to go.

by Ed Valentine on Mar 1, 2009 7:36 PM EST up reply actions

you guys overpaid

I like canty but is was ave in dallas..good against the run but had no pass rush skills…not a great motor either good luck

by scandrick32 on Mar 1, 2009 7:27 PM EST reply actions

robbins isn't a free agent right

We may not be able to afford him in a year, but he’s coming off a career year. I’d guess Canty projects to 3-tech, not nose. Robbins is really the only true Nose Tackle we have I think.

by queler on Mar 1, 2009 7:31 PM EST reply actions

Nose

We don’t need a nose tackle. Giants use the 4-3. Canty will play a straight DT for the Giants.

by Ed Valentine on Mar 1, 2009 7:34 PM EST up reply actions

yeah but we still play with a Nose

one tackle plays over center and the other is the three-tech. For the most part Robbins takes the nose in the base D I believe

by queler on Mar 1, 2009 11:02 PM EST up reply actions

That's really weird

it’s bugging me, I thought tackle was an area we needed depth at, not necessarily an upgrade

by queler on Mar 1, 2009 7:31 PM EST reply actions

Why

does it bug you to get a player this good? There is never anything wrong with an upgrade.

by Ed Valentine on Mar 1, 2009 7:35 PM EST up reply actions

your overrating canty

he is not that good…If he gets 2 sacks next year i be shocked…Dallas should get a 3rd or 4th rd pick in 2010 draft so not a bad deal for them

by scandrick32 on Mar 1, 2009 7:36 PM EST up reply actions

Jerry Reese

knows what he is doing. He’s a terrific judge of talent. We always trust his choices, especially more than a Dallas fan who has been stung.

by Ed Valentine on Mar 1, 2009 7:40 PM EST up reply actions

stung..no man

ratliff will be moving back to his natural position at de taking canty’s spot….There is no doubt ratt is a much better player than canty without question…

by scandrick32 on Mar 1, 2009 7:48 PM EST up reply actions

i just thought it was weird

I thought money would be better spent eleswhere, but now i’m hear that Cofield is unhappy with his contract, so I guess it makes sense.

by queler on Mar 1, 2009 11:03 PM EST up reply actions

Cofield

had better be happy w/whatever he gets. I’d say right now he is the 4th DT.

by Ed Valentine on Mar 2, 2009 7:18 AM EST up reply actions

i dont think so

the giants love cofield and my bet is he starts w/ canty
he is the only true nt in their base d# so i think he will start

by shenkthetank92 on Mar 2, 2009 9:50 AM EST up reply actions

Canty isn't being overrated

He drew the double coverage in Dallas that set the stage for Demarcus Ware. Canty’s prescence and size demands two blockers opening the door for Osi and Tuck to do their thing.

by giantbeliever on Mar 1, 2009 7:40 PM EST reply actions

i suggest u watch some tape of canty lol

paecells drafted him and did not even bring him down to miami for a visit…that should tell u all u need to know about canty

by scandrick32 on Mar 1, 2009 7:43 PM EST up reply actions

Canty doesn't eat double teams

I like him a lot as a player and I’m sad to see him go, but he was nothing more than a solid player. He’s good against the run and has intriguing physical skills, but lacks the moves to penetrate the pocket. He’s not stout enough to absorb multiple blockers.
Is he a better fit in the 4-3? Probably, seeing as Reese, who I greatly respect, chose to invest major cash on him. But I seriously doubt he’s worth this much. If I had to, I’d project 4-5 sacks a year and good run support with a great motor. Tell me, is that worth the contract?
Peace.

thing is

with Osi, Tuck, and Kiwanuka, we don’t really need DT’s who get sacks. We need DT’s who can move the pocket and give our DE’s time to get to the QB, and who can stuff the run. I’m not sure that Canty will be a superstar here, but I think it was definitely a good signing. Along with the Bernard signing, I think we majorly upgraded what was already the strongest part of our team. Next years line has a chance to be even better than the ’07 line, which was very DE heavy.

by cjmulrain on Mar 1, 2009 8:32 PM EST up reply actions

Solid

is all he needs to be. There is a ton of talent around him on that line, and playmaker at LB w/Boley.

by Ed Valentine on Mar 1, 2009 9:38 PM EST up reply actions

Canty is average

maybe slightly above. I liked the guy but he wasn’t someone who deserved a 42 million contract. This way Ratliff can move to the position he causes the most damage in and we can draft a good nt to fill that void. Canty is probably better suited at 4-3 and he made a couple plays this year but he would disappear in games at times and get manhandled sometimes on running plays, Ratliff was the real reason the line was so good. The second Washington game, Rat was double teamed and still got 2 sacks. Canty did nothing.

You’d better check your sources. I’m pretty sure that was Eli !!!

RE Kiwi:

He’d be great in a 3-4 he’s got the size and athleticism to be as good or better than DeMarcus Ware.. You heard it here first

It's not easy being Giants fan in Philly.. but it sure is satisfying

lol thats funny

better or as good as ware lmaooooo what are u on man??

by scandrick32 on Mar 1, 2009 11:47 PM EST up reply actions

first off

DeMarcus has the advantage of Jay Ratliff, who was the true MVP of that defense, any sensible game tape analysis would conclude that. Second, Mathias would be better in coverage. Third, he would be better in nickel and dime situations because he’s played with his hand consistently in the dirt. Fourth, you’re a troll, quit trying to make yourself feel better about your pitiful excuse for a coach, quarterback, and owner by coming over here and trying to diss another team for signing a player who used to be on your team. If i’m gonna take any Cowboy fan’s analysis on this i’d rather listen to houseofprime than some troll who’s username is a cornerback who was Pacman Jones insurance.

I don't like to hate, especially in your house

But how could you be this big a homer?
Demarcus Ware is a perennial DPOY candidate. He just came off a 20 sack season. He’s going to sign the biggest legitimate contract ever for a defensive player. (Haynesworth will get cut after 3 seasons IMO)
Mathias Kiwanuka is a slightly above average tweener End.
Come on, man. See some sense. That’s like me telling you that Anthony Spencer has the size and athleticism to be better than Strahan ever was.

This one doesnt really add up to me

hes gonna have to switch systems and our 2 current DTs are above average at their positions, so theyre gonna sink 42M into this guy (potentially anyways)?

Great comment!

Maybe you should post it a few more times to make sure we all read it.

C'mon, Shenk

We don’t do that to each other here. We’re all friends.

by Ed Valentine on Mar 1, 2009 9:40 PM EST up reply actions

Sorry, stenk. I obviously touched a nerve there.

I’d probably better stay away from any conversations about who’s won more playoff games (or series) in the past 10 years, between my team and yours. We’d probably better stick to safer points, like which team has the more obese head coach or the owner who’s face looks more like cling wrap.

Save the neck for me, Clark.

by Mr. Met on Mar 1, 2009 9:47 PM EST up reply actions

wait I'm confused

I’m a Mets fan too, but I’m pretty sure the Yankees have won more playoff games in the past decade, and I don’t think either team has an obese coach. Am I missing something?

by cjmulrain on Mar 1, 2009 10:43 PM EST up reply actions

Who's talking about the Yankees?

I was referring to the Cowboys.

Save the neck for me, Clark.

by Mr. Met on Mar 2, 2009 2:25 PM EST up reply actions

but he said "F the Mets"

and he’s a Giants fan. Not trying to get involved in others’ disputes, I was just really confused

by cjmulrain on Mar 2, 2009 3:08 PM EST up reply actions

You're right

I was confusing him with scardick. My mistake. Sorry shenk. Next time you post the same thing twice in the same thread and then you tell me to go f myself I’ll just let it go, just so we’ll be even.

Oh good - the right guy came back.

Like I was saying about who’s won more playoff games (series) in the last ten years, who has a fat marshmallow as head coach, and who has an owner that looks like he goes to the same doctor as Joan Rivers….

Save the neck for me, Clark.

lol

actually, he’s a Cowboys fan. Not only that, he’s a regular at Blogging the Boys, who recently changed his name to scandrick32 from, get this, canty99. He’s clearly just bitter that we signed his favorite player…

by cjmulrain on Mar 3, 2009 6:07 PM EST up reply actions

That is hilarious!

Save the neck for me, Clark.

by Mr. Met on Mar 3, 2009 9:55 PM EST up reply actions

Personally, it never occured to me that Mr. Met was referring to

the Yankees. That didn’t make sense. Of course, it was the first I heard that Stenk was a Cowboy fan (“your team”), so the confusion all around was justified.

by blue gonz on Mar 2, 2009 3:44 PM EST up reply actions

Not bashing you, Shenk

You’re too sensitive, my friend. The Canty move is a surprising one. We will see where this leads.

by Ed Valentine on Mar 1, 2009 9:39 PM EST up reply actions

And maybe another

wishlist about signing Housh AND trading for Boldin. If the NFL was like baseball that would be possible, but thankfully it’s not :) I’m kind of torn by this to be honest. More depth is never something to sneeze at, and it’ll be interesting to see what happens to Robbins (I think Kiwi stays, they love his versatility). But Canty never really bothered me as a Cowboy, never someone who made me nervous. Of course as a high-character guy, he definitely belongs with us more than the Cowboys ;)

Off topic

but has anyone been following the Broncos/Jay Cutler situation? I hadn’t heard anything about it till this afternoon, but I’ve been reading the posts over at Mile High Report, and it sounds like Cutler’s being a real prima donna b/c the Broncos listened to trade offers but rejected them. I know I tend to be harsh on Eli, but times like these I realize what we have. I guarantee that if this kind of thing happened with him, he’d take it in stride, have his typical shrug of the shoulders “it’s no big deal” press conference, and then get back to preparing to win a Super Bowl next season. Eli may not be the most talented QB in the league, but he’s got a great attitude, and you’ve gotta like that.
