Cut down day: In surprise, Carr will stay
This already showed up in a comment on another thread, but it needs its own post.
David Carr will stay on in 2009 as Eli Manning's backup quarterback. Sam Madison, Reuben Droughns and Sammy Knight have been cut. R.W. McQuarters is still hanging on to a roster spot.

McQuarters
I’d imagine they’ll hold on to him until at least mini camp because he has value outside of his position.. on special teams and in the return game. I highly expect him to be a camp casualty though.
It's not easy being Giants fan in Philly.. but it sure is satisfying
Glad to have Carr for another year.
I don’t know about anyone else, but I am AMAZED at how durable Eli has been. When he first got here, I thought he was gonna get broken in two!!! Remember his first game when he just got PANCAKED into the turf??
Last thing I want to see is David Carr starting for the Giants because Eli’s injured, but it’s a very tough game. Just ask “Tom Terrific” how quick things can get ugly.
I can think of worst safety nets than Carr.
This is absolutely ludicrous..
but could they be hanging on to Carr for Eli insurance? They may have given him this deal with the understanding that Eli’s in a contract year and if something catastrophic happens.. Carr is their man. Could he have taken reduced pay to be given the opportunity to potentially start for a contender?

Glad Carr will be around
I think the kid has alot of talent, and could still be a good starter in the league. Not many teams have the luxury the Giants do

Ditto
thats kind of surprising actually, he looked pretty good in his limited time, but he showed, or began to show, that he can play with an actual offensive line
so good for us I suppose
Okay, just so I understand it... in your wildest fantasy, you are in hell. And you are co-running a bed and breakfast with the devil.
I'm pretty sure
Carr’s deal is because he can’t really get what he could be worth right now, another year with one of the better teams, backing up one of the better QBs, in a huge market and possibility of a ring will be awesome for him, thats why hes not signed to more than a year or more than 1mil
and
he probably thinks (and so do I, for what it’s worth), that if Manning gets hurt and he backs up, he could be very successful behind our O-line and with our run game. If he pulls a Hostetler (or even just a Cassel), he’ll be in much higher demand next year and could possibly even start for a contender looking for a new QB.
Wow
I was totally convinced that Carr would go someplace where he would have a shot at starting.
I guess being paid $1M without getting pounded is pretty appealing
The others
I know Madison doesn’t contribute much on the field anymore, but I’ll be sad to see him go. He filled that CB nicely for a couple of years and he was a great locker room presence. I think he’ll be sorely missed. Hopefully he comes back in the future as a DB coach. Droughns was good on special teams, but definitely not worth the money. I kind of forgot about Knight. He might as well have been invisible.
How much is he really getting?
“The Daily News has learned Carr received a one-year deal worth $2.1 million, which includes a $1 million base salary in 2009.”
There are quotes out there where he says he could have gone somewhere else but ended up in situation like Houston and that idea wasn’t very appealing to him.
my guess
is thatt he gets paid 2.1 if he has to take over the starting role at some point…

If your guess is right
Nothing against him, but I hope he only gets a mil
(and a “ten table” ring!!!)
At least it is not David Brown....

I shouldn't even admit this, but
When we first got him, I bet my brother-in-law and cousin (Pats fans) that Dave Brown would end up having a better career than Drew Bledsoe. Thank GOD Drew played equally as poorly!!!
When Bledsoe got to Dallas he said his arm was TERRIFIC; Parcells said “it’s his HEAD that I’m worried about”
Bledsoe
I always think he gets a bad rap.. his numbers if you looked at them blindly, you’d think he was a hall of famer..

I would never characterise Bledsoe as a poor quarterback.
He did a lot with a little in New England. He was their Phil Simms. Obviously our last memories of him are not good, but you could say the same thing about a lot of quarterbacks who played too long, including one Bret Favre.

Should Beldsoe be in the HOF?
My point was the I really excepted MUCH better things from Brown. What a disappointment he was.
As for Blew Dredsoe, there’s NO WAY you’re gonna convince my that he wasn’t a hugh bust too! Yes he had a better career than Brown ( imagine doing that), but he certainly didn’t live up to the Dan Marino, Johnny Unitas comparsion they were throwning around in NE. They spoke of him like he was gonna win the Superbowl and end world hunger all in one afternoon.
G57: In the future, please never use Bledsoe’s name in the same sentence as Favre!! That’s comparing apples to dump trucks. Vinnie “Bad decision, at the worst possible moment” Testeverde is a better comparision
There's something about Favre..
There is no doubt in my mind that he is one of the 10 greatest quarterbacks to ever play the game, But he only had a handful of spectacular statistical seasons. Up until 2007 he played average, with some flashes of his former self, but it wasn’t there. The reason that Brett Favre is so beloved is because he’s a regular guy, with regular problems who the average fan can see a part of themself in. He may be the all time leader in several passing categories; but let’s be realistic, how long is it until Peyton breaks all of them (except career interceptions)?

And..
I firmly believe that if Bledsoe had Reggie White on his defense, he would have a super bowl ring..

Reggie and Blew both have rings, don't they???

I don’t have a man-crush on Favre like John Madden does, but I like him for all the reasons you list. Down to earth, fun loving, fun to watch, chuck the ball around like in the back yard kind of stuff. He’s one of those guys you’d like to hang out with and have a bunch of beers
My comparison was about the last memories...not careers.
Favre was better than Bledsoe. But Favre’s name should never be spoken in the same sentence as Marino, Montana, Young, Peyton, Bradshaw, and Unitas either.

OK, IT'S A DEAL,
IF you promise you’ll never compare NE’s Bledsoe to our PHIL SIMMS again?
Phil’s a Super Bowl MVP!!! That’s a Bledsoe wet dream!!!
The football gods can be cruel.
When Drew was playing his best the team just wasn’t there to go all the way. But in a lot of ways they are comparable. They both played 14 years, their qb ratings are within one point of each other, they both stood in the pocket and had quick releases, and an examination of their career stats shows them to be very similar.

G57: I'm not looking for an argument here
but you can’t convince me on this one.
Did Bledsoe live up to his expectations? NO
Did Phil exceed what was expected of him? DEFINITELY
Putting the blame on three different sets of teammates (NE, Buffalo and Dallas) isn’t an excuse. The guy had Bill Parcells as a coach TWICE!!
The list of underachieving QBs is endless – ALL of them put the blame on everyone else, not themselves. (apparently their admirers do too!)
The difference between Simms and Bledsoe
is that Bledsoe was expected to be great, and was merely very good. Simms wasn’t expected to be that good and was very good. And the biggest difference is one game: Simms completed 22 of 25 and won, Bledsoe completed 25 of 48 and lost.
CJ: thank you for your comment
If you look below this post, you’ll see that told G57 I quit. The argument can and would go on forever. (Now we’re dragging poor Dan Fouts into it)
My whole point WAS Bledsoe under-achieved (bad thing), Simms over-achieved (good thing)and as a GIANTS / PHIL SIMMS fan, I didn’t like the comparision. It takes away from all the hard work Phil put into getting where he got as a QB. I’d vote Phil into the HOF before Drew; no?
End of story.
yes
I’d vote for Simms before I’d vote for Bledsoe. But I’d vote for Brady before I’d vote for Peyton too – doesn’t mean Manning isn’t also great. Bledsoe underachieved but still had a very good career. Not HOF worthy, but he’s definitely on that next tier of guys. I think it’s unfair to judge guys based on when they were drafted, I’d rather judge them by what they did on the field. Ryan Leaf didn’t suck b/c he was a high draft pick, Ryan Leaf sucked b/c he sucked.
There you go!
I’m not saying Drew SUCKED, just he underachieved. (He was the sharpest tool in the shed either. Some of his interviews were JUST laughable. The Boston press even had a field day with him)
I don’t care where you were in the draft pick either; What did you do when you got there!!!!! I think Bledsoe expectations weren’t based so much on where he was picked, I think (think I KNOW) that it was a Miami game where as a rookie he threw for 2000 yards and 15 TDs, THAT was the day he was turned into a GOD in NE.
By your criteria Dan Fouts would be an underachiever.
And yes, it is possible that the combination of players on three teams might make the differnce. And it’s not like he didn’t have any success at New England.

Ok, I quit...
I don’t remember what the expectations were when Dan Fouts entered the league.
I live in New England and have had this type of discussion with many Pats fans who won’t admit that Bledsoe didn’t live up to expectations or that his bad decision making was one’s fault but his own either.
*****************************************************************
On a lighter note, When Dan Fouts (the commentator) was recently discussing a team’s defense, one of the other commentators asked “What do you know about playing defense?’ to which Dan replied "Well, I did throw over 250 interceptions”
Take care GO GIANTS!!!
