Friday Giants' notes, 02.06.09

Giants_notebook_468_medium

Here are a few stories of interest to New York Giants' fans for a Friday afternoon.

  • The Fifth Down discusses the value of a No. 1 wide receiver, particularly Plaxico Burress. It's old, tired territory for us -- nothing we haven't covered before. Except, that is, for the video and tidbit of information about Hakeem Nicks of North Carolina.
  • Anquan Boldin figures his days with the Arizona Cardinals are probably finished.
  • T.J. Houshmandzadeh, another possible target for the Giants, appears to have wanderlust for the NFC East rival Philadelphia Eagles. If Housh winds up in Philly, they are going to have to learn how to spell his name.
  • Kansas City tight end Tony Gonzalez is still unsure about his future with the Chiefs.

For Gonzalez, selected to his 10 Pro Bowl, he’s bothered by the fact he’s never won a playoff game in his illustrious career.

“I want to make sure before this thing is all said and done, I want to be a part of a team that can make it all the way to the Super Bowl and win,” he said. “I don’t want to just get to the playoffs.”

  • The weird and short-lived marriage between Dan Reeves and the Dallas Cowboys is the latest bizarre chapter in the dysfunctional mess that is Jerry Jones' team. Pro Football Talk and Blogging the Boys each have some thoughts on the quickie divorce.

Q

The more AB pounds on the table and speaks out against the Cards; the lower his price tag gets.

Plus; with Drew Rosenhaus in his ear (the only way Drew gets paid is if Q signs an extension either in AZ or elsewhere) I think this could be headed towards a divorce.

Agreed

The guy might not be as explosive as Larry Fitzgerald, but he sure would look nice in a Giants uniform.

I guess Im one of the few who doesnt want Tony Gonzalez

He cant block and he would hinder Boss’s continuing development, and hes not likely to play long term, so why give up anything of subsequence to get him?

Okay, just so I understand it... in your wildest fantasy, you are in hell. And you are co-running a bed and breakfast with the devil.

I'm with you, Bren

The resources (ie draft picks) it would take to get a guy like Gonzo – if you were to consider parting with them in the first place – would be better applied to get a #1 like Boldin.

I just don’t think there’s a "huge* need to upgrade at TE.

And until Gilbride remembers that the offense is allowed to utilize the TE in the passing game, why bother putting someone like Gonzo in there anyway? We’ve already got a solid, young TE to go in there and get overlooked as it is!!

(cheap shot on Gilbride alert! cheap shot on Gilbride alert! cheap shot on Gilbride alert!)

I really think Boss can make the pro bowl if utilized correctly next year too

But they need to focus on WR, not TE, which is a position of strength on this team, even Darcy showed some good signs this year

I like Boss a lot

and I’d prefer to get a WR like Boldin. But Tony G is an elite pass catching Tight End. He’s probably the best in NFL history in fact. The best Boss will ever be is probably only as good as Tony G is right now. Obviously it would require Gilbride to utilize him correctly, but Gonzalez is still good enough to be a #1 target on a good team, and he can create mismatches that few other guys can create. I don’t want to give up a ton to get him, but if Pioli feels the need to start over and dump him, and he can be had for a lower draft pick, I’d do it in a heartbeat.

Houshmandzadeh

“If Housh winds up in Philly, they are going to have to learn how to spell his name.”

Not a problem. They’ll call him TJ. They couldn’t spell Terrell either.
