Boley officially a Giant; Bernard, too
Linebacker Michael Boley is officially a New York Giant, having signed a 5-year, $25 million dollar deal.
Ralph Vacchiano reports that Boley will play the weak side.
The Giants have also added depth at defensive tackle, signing Seattle's Rocky Bernard.
So, this was an excellent day for the Giants as they addressed two areas that were weak in 2008.

The Giants made 2 good signings.
I hate to say that but they did.

I like the Boley signing
from the standpoint that Sheridan was the LB coach last year – he must be convinced that Boley’s role in our D will fit his strengths.
And Bernard will have an opportunity to do his thing on passing downs lining up inside next to Tuck w/ Osi and Kiwi on the outside. Another solid signing. But I would still like to draft a DT in the early part of the draft as an eventual replacement for Robbins.
ok they upgraded 2 of the 3 needs now lets go sign michael clayton
lets get the 6-4 clayton in town and then w/ addressing the 3 major needs go out and trade for boldin first and second rounder or something
think about tht
michael clayton
anquan boldin
dominik hixon
steve smith
ooo i like the sound of tht
Sweet
First Boley, now Bernard, two names that never came up in BBV discussions, but that meet a couple of needs. JR is a magician.
This IS good news, but it doesn't make me feel warm and fuzzy
about the chances of seeing Canty in blue. Maybe that was awfully wishful thinking on my part anyways.
Tom Rock from Newsday
is saying that they haven’t ruled Canty out.. I want a 7 man defensive line. Canty could play outside on running downs and inside on passing downs.. it would be perfect
It's not easy being Giants fan in Philly.. but it sure is satisfying

because Osi
has proven that he’s not the greatest of run defenders

i have a good hunch they will shop robbins
think about it no way are we holding 4 dt the whole season
and robbins is the most likely to go
no way they sen alford or cofield packing just simply wont happen
why?
Robbins just had the best season of his career??

no hes had 5.5 sacks for the past 3 years
each of the past season he had 5.5 sacks
plus hes old
plus he went under 3 surgerys this off season
and they dont even know if he will be done w/ rehab b4 the start of the season
he is the least athletic of the group
and therefore he is probably the odd man out so y not get something for him

For all those reasons
you just mentioned. Old, injured, least athletic. I don’t agree with you, but anyone who thinks of him that way isn’t giving up draft picks for him anyway. Besides, the last two seasons he has played the best football of his career. Dumping him is silly.

I like selling guys when they are at theri highest value
Robbins has had a couple of really good years. I would love to get younger talent if someone bit on him.
I am sure JR is looking around, but I am sure he is not going to make a stupid move or dump someone just to get younger.

NFL trades
you simply don’t see a lot of them. Besides, depth is critical (as we should have learned from the SB year). When you can build quality depth at a position why tear it down on purpose?

If we could get the LB, DT and WR with free agents....
Maybe we can draft some cheerleaders.

getting rid of robbins would just puzzle me!!!
well see what happens but idk he wont like the idea of a diminished role

He will
like the idea of having someone to share the burden with, though. Defensive linemen wear down as the season progresses, and Robbins was all beat up — hands, shoulder, knee. Fewer snaps in ’09, more productivity.

Agreed, Rumble
They are adding Bernard because they only had three DTs last season and that is one fewer than teams usually carry. Robbins and Cofield aren’t going anywhere. The loser here is likely to be Alford, who won’t play nearly as much if everyone is healthy.

I think he stays, too
If he’s no good to us, who’s gonna want him
It’s 6 months until the 1st game, if he isn’t healthy by then he’s in trouble
With only 3 DTs, if one goes down we’re back to last year >>> tired linemen at the end of the season
Fred and Barry play well together, why break up a line that knows each others tendencies.
He played with TWO BROKEN HANDS!!! (badly injured, atleast)
I can’t think of a good reason to dump him
I like the Boley signing as well
but my friend who is a Seahawks fan has done nothing but dump on Bernard consistently since he signed there. Makes me a bit wary.
Check this out though
This is what was written on the Field Gulls about Benard:
“The feeling among Seahawks fans is that Bernard had a down season. He certainly wasn’t as disruptive as season’s past. But defensive tackle is as likely as any position to suffer from a complete team failure. Bernard faced fewer favorable positions and fewer favorable matchups than seasons past.”
Go over & check the rest out too. He has a good scouting report up on him.
From an Eagles fan...
Boley is a heck of a signing. I hate the move. He played at a Pro Bowl level in 07.
THANKS!!!
Sorry to hear about Dawkins for you guys. It’s like our Toomer situation, you can’t imagine the guy in any other uniform. It’s a sad business sometimes!!!
much as I love Toomer
he’s nowhere near the stature in NY as Dawkins is in Philly. It would be like if Strahan had signed with another team for the last few years of his career.
It's sad to see long-term guys have to go
but if we celebrate free-agency, we have to take the bad as well. Personally I won’t miss Dawkins spears or cheap shots (Ike Hilliard anyone?). Boley is a great pick-up and perfectly illustrates the difference between us and the Skins, and why we have so many more playoff victories the past decade. Bernard is a good pick up, and I don’t think Alford is going anywhere (long snapper remember). I think they go with 4 DT’s since Canty is gone. To be honest I never saw the hyp about him.

as ETVal has suggested (instructed us!!)
I was being nice to an Eagles fan who came to our site and was being decent with us. He congratulated us on the Boley signing, so I replied about Dawkins cause there ain’t no good news in Philly that I’m hearing.
I won’t miss Dawkins at all. Thank you Denver for taking him out the NFC!!!!
You got me thinking of reasons not to miss Dawkins and
didn’t he make a TD saving tackle on a really long AB run? I remember seeing him come out of nowhere and take AB down at the one. I also remember shouting the word that rhymes with Rucker when it happened
and as hard as KG tried, we settled for a FG with 1st and Goal. (AGAIN!!!)
That really did get old last year...
Think of what our offensive numbers would have been if we had been more productive in those situations.
