Notes of interest from the combine
Here are a couple of notes from the NFL scouting combine about players who may interest our New York Giants.
- Maryland wide receiver Darrius Heyward-Bey may have jetted his way up draft boards Sunday by posting a 4.30 40-yard dash -- the second-fastest time by a receiver since 2000.
- Meanwhile, Hakeem Nicks, whom many of the current mock drafts have the Giants taking with the 29th pick, shut himself down with a strained hamstring Sunday. Heyward-Bey and Nicks may have just switched places.
- Kenny Britt, the local favorite from Rutgers, had an uneven performance Sunday.
- Here is an NFL.com video review of how the recievers performed at the combine Sunday.
- A defensive tackle from the obscure Stillman College -- a Division II school -- might be a guy to keep an eye on. NFL.com says Sammie Lee Hill (6-foot-3, 329 pounds) is getting attention and could be a mid-round selection. That sounds like the right area of the draft for the Giants to look for some defensive line help, and a big, athletic run-stuffer would be a nice fit.
- USC's trio of highly-touted linebackers are now competing against each other.
- Yahoo! Sports has a look at Sunday's winners and losers.

It's amazing
how a guy like Nicks could fall from the first round to the 3rd round and Heyward-Bey can move up just because of one 40 time in Febuary. Thats why there are so many “steals” in the later rounds because teams put too much stock into this stuff. They have a bad combine and they fall to the 3rd or 4th round and then all of a sudden they develop into quality players all becasue they did not run fast enough or jump high enough one day in Febuary, it’s seems so odd to me that this combine stuff carries so much more weight than what a player did in college.

Agreed
It should be about what kind of football players these guys are. Instead, it becomes too much about what kind of physical specimens they are or how fast they can run. Look at what you see on the field, not in a contrived workout. I post this combine stuff not because I’m a big believer in it, but because there is so much interest in it.

I actually think
some teams are happy when certain players they are looking to draft do poorley in the combine because then that player might fall to the second or third round and then they could draft some other position of need in the first round then pick that other player later. It makes them feel like they got two first round picks. I’ve read articles about the Giants 05 draft and Acorsi and Reese both felt Tuck and Webster were first round talents, in fact when the giants picked Webster over Tuck in the 2nd round that year it caused some infighting in the war-room. Along with Jacobs in the 4th round that year I think they made out.

Heyward-Bey
I go to UMD and i saw Darrius Heyward-Bey play the last two years and he is a BEAST. Not only is he really fast, he has an amazing ability to go up and get the ball and make one handed catches. He’s the real deal its too bad Maryland never had a real QB or offense to take full advantage of his abilities.

Anyone see this
Crabtree is shorter than expected and has a foot injury
I doubt this will drop him all the way to the Giants, but it’s a nice thought to have…

Let's get Britt
I’ve heard he vaulted into the last 1st round with his performance. Why not take a local kid we know can definitely play.

Dayne was
from South Jersey, and played in a zone blocking scheme at Wisconsin that is notorious for pumping up stats.

First round?
I don’t think so. The reports I read didn’t say that. He will go second round, most likely. Good fit for the Giants there, if they don’t go receiver in the first round.

what reports?
He’s a first rounder based on what I saw during the season. I think the internet consensus is bunk for the most part, and it’s just now coming around to looking at him after scrutinizing the big name guys for so long. I could have said that Britt would be in the 4.5 range months ago.
Also like DHB quite a bit too.

I want Ramses Barden
6’6 the biggest hands and the longest arms in the draft.. he ran a 4.57.. with a guy that has an 8 inch advantage on most guys, eli could just Huck one up. Plus Ramses is a sweet name.
It's not easy being Giants fan in Philly.. but it sure is satisfying
