We've seen lots of criticism of KG recently
However, did he ever make as poor a call as the one the Cards OC made on the play that resulted in an interception and a hundred yard return for a TD? That was a predesigned play. Okay, give the Steeler DC credit for faking the blitz, etc, making the interception possible, in that situation, why not a jump ball or fade to Fitz? The OC ousmarted himself and that play was the difference in the game. Any thoughts?

Fade to Fitzgerald
seems like the obvious call after it worked so perfectly in the 4th quarter. Still, in football, there’s rarely one person to blame. Warner made a bad read on that play that resulted in the INT.
I thought Todd Haley (the OC) made up for the goal line call later in the game with the long Fitzgerald TD. Haley made a brilliant call that exploited Pitt’s cover 2 by drawing both safeties to the sidelines with out routes while Fitz slanted over the middle in single coverage.
Overall, Haley has done a good job, especially in the postseason. He’s in the mix for at least one head coaching job (I think I read KC, but not sure). Even though Gilbride has seen criticism, he is generally thought of as a good play caller, hence Oakland’s supposed interest in him.
Warner made a bad read, etc
Oh yeah, if he made a read at all. He saw Harrison creeping up, thought blitz and got rid of the ball to the open (supposedly) spot as fast as he could. One of his biggest strengths is using the blitz to his advantage. He throws that kind of ball a lot. It usually works and he looks great. This time it didn’t. Overall, both QBs has damned good days.
it wasn't a bad read, really
james harrison pretended to pass rush then dropped back a couple of steps for the pick. what was really ridiculous about that pick was that not one cardinal could stop him and let time run out to make that pick worthless
Good point
There were red shirts all around him when he caught the ball.
That was just an all-around bad play
not that it excuses Gilbride, of course. If Todd Haley jumped off a bridge, would Gilbride jump too?
That said, is anyone else as sick as I am of people saying this was the best Super Bowl ever and that was the best SB play ever? I’m sorry, defenders intercept passes and return them for TD’s all the time. It wasn’t so much a great play on his part as a terrible play by Arizona. How often do QB’s escape the grasp of 3 guys on a crucial third down, heave the ball downfield, and have a no-name WR catch the ball one-handed on his helmet? And the ending of yesterday’s game was great – but it was EXACTLY the same as the ending to last years game. One team takes the lead with just under 3 minutes left. Other team re-takes the lead with 35 seconds left. Last gasp shot falls short, game over. Except, of course, the big difference is that in this one, the team that was a 7 point favorite was the one that pulled out the win. Last year, the team that was the biggest underdog in SB history pulled out the win against an UNDEFEATED team. I can’t emphasize that enough. I think people have already forgotten how stunning that was, considering the Pats didn’t make the playoffs this year and the Giants were the best team in the NFL until December. Nobody was picking the Giants last year. And aside from the endings being similar, the game last year was much more well-played the first 3 quarters. Anyone who says this years game was better is either a Steelers fan, or doesn’t know what they’re talking about.
KG
I think the difference for me is KG is always going away from the team’s strength which is the running game. And it always seems that he does it when the weather is the worst.
In the Eagles game it became readily apparent from the opening drive that Eli was having problems throwing the ball in the wind and yet KG just kept throwing.
You gotta look at the bright side
The GIANTS were # 1 in the league at hitting our projected RUN to PASS ratio!!!!
Even if it meant losing the game!!!!
I thought the same thing
Fade to Fitz… only call to make in that situation

Horrendous calls by other OCs don't really excuse
the horrendous calls by our own OC.
Save the neck for me, Clark.
No
But they do point out that KG is not the only OC to have ever made a mistake.

I don't know how...
you can say that was a bad play call. The only reason the Cards where in the SB was because of Warner’s arm. They where not even remotely close to a good running team.
So what where thier options? Run the ball, and if they don’t score a TD, take the risk of time running out before they can line up to kick a FG….remember they where out of Time-Outs. Or taking three quick passes into the endzone and then kicking the FG if necessary. I think the correct call was the pass….It didn’t work out for them, but not every play does.
On a side note….Kevin “KillDrive” Gilbride is absolutely Terrible. I would take the Cards OC over him any day of the week. Right now I might even consider interviewing Detroits OC. I just Wish Buddy Ryan had shown up on clean out day and kicked Gilbride’s butt.

A pass was the right call.
It was the kind of pass that was a mistake.
I agree about Haley.
Think about what kind of game plan he could come up wth if he had our running game to mix things up.
As for the interception, Warner later said that he was screened by his offensive linemen and didn’t see Harrison. I would just chauk it up to a great play by the best defensive player in the league and not necessarily blame the call or even the throw.

The question was...
did he ever make as poor a call as the one the Cards OC made on the play that resulted in an interception and a hundred yard return for a TD? YES!!!
Not 100 yards; how about a 1 yard run for a touchdown in the Eagles playoff game!!
Manning was standing on the goal line when Asante Samuels intercepted the pass and ran it back to the one. Does ANYONE here think THAT was a brilliant play to call? Take those 7 points for the Eagles off the board and the whole game changes.
WHY IN THE WORLD, does our offense settle for field goals ALL THE F&@%ing time?
EVERYONE said, going into that game “We CAN’T settle for FGs, we have to get Touchdowns” Didn’t we
Apparently, Einstein didn’t get the memo!! What the hell are we gonna do if he’s still here come September? I don’t want to think about, but you asked the question!!!
(Sorry for going off. my blood BOILS blue too.)
Magic formula
There is no magic ‘dial a touchdown’ formula. You sound as if you think Gilbride is trying for field goals instead of touchdowns. KG is far from perfect, but every time a play breaks down, a receiver drops a pass, Eli throws a bad ball, a lineman misses or — God forbid — the defense makes a good play you can’t blame the coordinator. We did win a Super Bowl with him calling four terrific games in a row. Oh, and you do remember John Hufnagel, of course.
Agreed. There is no magic formula
but they sure seem to be running a totally different calculation over in New England
or with other teams that don’t have to be settling for FGs alot (not all) of the time. When you keep running the same calculation and keep getting the same poor results, there has to be a common denominator. i.e GILBRIDE!!!!
Tom Coughlin has stated HIS disgust with the lack of productivity in the green zone and I simply aired mine when asked. Did you think rolling Eli out to his left around your own endzone (10 yardline) was the proper call or the ONLY mistake KG made in the EAGLES game? Call me spoiled, but I thought my days of gut-wrenching, nationally televised embarrassing loses was over. BOY was I wrong!!!!
