Super Bowl XLIII Open Thread

Superbowl_logo_medium

It's Super Bowl Sunday. Who are you taking today, the favored Pittsburgh Steelers or the surprising Arizona Cardinals?

My heart says Cardinals, my head says Steelers. I am going with my head and picking the Steelers to win the second Super Bowl of Ben Roethlisberger's career.

By the way, how are you watching the game? Heading to a party? Hanging with a few friends? Heading to the local pub?

Personally, I prefer to stay home, put my feet up and actually watch the game. That's what I'll be doing.

Consider this your Super Bowl Open Thread. Give us your pick and let us know how you will watch the game.

Enjoy!

I have a good feeling about that

Im gonna go with Cards 28 Steelers 24

Okay, just so I understand it... in your wildest fantasy, you are in hell. And you are co-running a bed and breakfast with the devil.

Still Hurts

that the Giants are not here, I still think their better than both of these teams. Like you ETVal I like to stay home. My wife is making some treats my brother is comming over w/ beer. I just settled in w/ my labtop, newspapers, & I’ve begun to watch 7 hours of pre-game hype. This is like a Holiday for me. Steelers 31 Cardinals 19.

From a pre-season where many were predicting a Chargers (yuck) v. Cowboys (yuckier) Super Bowl...

… Here we are with a Cardinals v. Steelers face-off. My head also says Steelers… but there is more than the emotional pull for the Underdog that would allow me to believe that the Cardinals could pull it off. The Cardinals’ defense, which was an embarrassment at points this season, has been looking stronger during the playoffs. If they can hold the Steelers’ — let’s face it — non-spectacular offense to 14 or less, they could win. Even with the Steelers’ top-ranked defense, the Cards will get a couple long balls through; with Ftizgerald likely drawing double teams, Boldin will have to stop whining and come up big; and then there’s Breaston and Pope. Despite having the league’s worst-ranked ground game, it has come alive a bit in the post season… can “The Edge” — who is the only running back in recent history to rush for more than 100 yards against the Steelers’ iron curtain in a play off game (when we was a Colt) — do it again? Then there’s the Wisenhunt factor… he knows what schemes Le Beau will throw at Warner and crew, and he knows how to get in Big Ben’s (turnover prone under pressure) head (perhaps Wilson has another red zone pick this week). Could we then see a Cards 17 – Steelers 14 game today? Perhaps; but maybe not…

Defense DOES win championships. Nine of the last 12 SB winners have featured a top 10 defense and I just can’t bet against Dick LeBeau.

if the Giants were playing

I would be whatching it at home (because I am a little supertitious) but since they are not I will be watching with some friends at the newest hooters here in Cabo San Lucas.

Bummer

But, you are still in Cabo San Lucas and I am still in upstate New York staring at ice and snow.

I'm not going to argue with you about that Ed

that is the second time I have a Giant this close and no change for a picture. I friend of mine is a contractor and he works at the Resort where Eli got married last year. He tried to sneak me in but there was no luck.

Knicks blogs

I would try ‘Posting and Toasting,’ which is SBN’s Knicks blog. I don’t frequent the site since I am not a Knicks fan. You can also try Knickerblogger.

by Ed Valentine on Feb 1, 2009 12:39 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I hang out at P&T

The writers are a little less professional, and the blog isn’t nearly as highly trafficked, but it is a fun site.

OTOH – The Knicks are becoming a fun team – definitely in transition, better than last year, but that’s not saying much. They have some exciting young players, and seem to be straightening out the organization after the devastation of the Thomas years

The BBV Family

So do you guys all know each other? I just learned of BBV and am new to the site within the last couple weeks… good to meet you guys… albeit virtually. Are most of you still in NY? I now live on the West Coast so it’s great to have found this Giants crew online so I can stay connected.

BBV Family

We know each other from this site, primarily. I have a couple of friends who frequent the site, as does ‘jrs.’ Mostly, though, we have gotten to know each other thru our love for the Giants. Also because, for the most part, we enjoy intelligent discussion. BTW, welcome aboard. I am amazed that site membership has continued to grow even with the season being over.

Cool, well I look forward to some good discussions here.

Welcome to the West Coast!

Where are you based nowadays? I think there are quite a few of us on the site who are not on the East Coast.

Steelers 24 Cards 20

I nearly always watch the game alone.

Too many distractions at a party. Cards win, 31-24.

Agreed

I have gone to a few SB parties, and I just don’t like them. Maybe I am anti-social, but I like to just watch the game.

Roth the berg chokes..

with 4 picks and the Cards roll big.

Back again from the dead

Still trying to win the war against my sinuses, they’ve completely kicked my ass all week.

If the Cardinals win, to me its the biggest Super Bowl upset of my lifetime.

I believe the Cards will be outhit, outplayed, and outclassed.

I can't believe you said that

after our win last year. You crazy!

by Mr. Met on Feb 1, 2009 6:16 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

thats because

I don’t consider the Giants win that big of an upset, Giants had proven a month prior they could play with the Pats, and defense wins Championships.

Er...

I’m gonna chalk this conversation up to you being sick or something. You normally make a lot of sense. The Cardinals showed they could win up til now also. The Giants last year were by far a bigger underdog than the Cards were this year. You’re still a great guy – you deserve to be butt-crack crazy once in a while!

Save the neck for me, Clark.

by Mr. Met on Feb 1, 2009 9:55 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

agree with this 500%

These Steelers are a very good team, but they don’t even approach the dominance of last year’s Pats. I don’t care that the Giants played with them, the Pats were 18-0!!! Most people thought that last game was an aberration and the Pats would win in a ‘Cowboys vs. Bills’ type rout. This year, over 50% of ESPN Sportsnation were picking the Cardinals. IMO, the list of truly epic SB upsets reads:

1a) Jets-Colts
1b) Giants-Pats
Big Gap
3) Broncos-Packers
4) Pats-Rams

before the half?

That sounds familiar.

I take back my take back.

THAT was the Kurt Warner I remember best, on the last play there, running around forever and finally fumbling.

by Mr. Met on Feb 1, 2009 10:11 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Couldn't do it with that team.

We had the worst O line in the league and a less than average group of receivers. He kept trying to make things happen, which made him look bad. Eli was a far better fit for that team. A rookie, He wouldn’t take the chances Warner did.

by blue gonz on Feb 1, 2009 11:12 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I hate to say it

but Warner would probably be pretty amazing with our current roster.

by cjmulrain on Feb 1, 2009 11:22 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Oh, yes, indeed,

but he migtht not even play next year. Eli has a good ten years to go, hopefully time to develop a skill set comparable to Warner’s. Not many QBs can make reads as
well as Warner and his quick release rivals Marino’s.

Freaking Eagles

I’m still convinced if the Giants had not played them they would be in this game. I’m sorry , I know it’s sour grapes but I still feel the Giants are better than both of these teams even without Plax. With Plax the Giants handle both of these teams easily.

by Landeta on Feb 1, 2009 8:24 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

I agree.

This game is entirely depressing for that reason. If I had to hang one guy for that, it’s still Gilbride.

Save the neck for me, Clark.

by Mr. Met on Feb 1, 2009 9:07 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

That was a pretty wild game.

And still ultimately anti-climactic, given that the Giants would have easily beaten the Steelers, IN MY HUMBLE OPINION.

Save the neck for me, Clark.

Mr. Met

were on the same page, I’m going to bed. Now were going to hear about how Big Ben out did Eli in the Super Bowl. That was the one thing Eli had over Ben.

by Landeta on Feb 1, 2009 10:19 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Beat them easily? I disagree.

They could have beat the Steelers, and I think 4 out 7 they win the majority. The beauty (and ugliness) of football comes from the one and done set-up. Steelers are always a tough match-up.

by brisulph on Feb 3, 2009 2:59 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

w/o Plax

I don’t think the Giants could have beaten the Steelers more than twice out of ten tries. With Plax, probably 6 out of 10. Remember, they almost beat us during the regular season, and that was with Plax and everyone healthy on our part, and I’m pretty sure they were down to their #4 RB at that point. The Steelers were a very good team this year. So were we for the first 3/4 of the season, but w/o Plax I just don’t think we measured up.

On the bright side, at least the Giants are still the last NFC team to win a Super Bowl

great game, but not quite as good as last year. How quickly people forget what a truly David v. Goliath game that was. For 3 quarters the refs were as 1-sided as I’ve ever seen in a Super Bowl (even worse than the last Steelers win…hmmm), but then they turned on a dime in the 4th quarter and called everything for the Cardinals, before finally screwing them over at the end by not reviewing what looked to me like a clear incomplete pass on the penultimate play.

Warner was magnificent except for his last play of each half, which combined to cost his team the game. I forgive him for the final fumble, but the INT at the half was terrible, especially since he had a chance to knock Harrison out of bounds but let himself get steamrolled. Still, I don’t think this loss will detract from his HOF candidacy – if he has one more very good year, I think he’s in.

I would sell every organ of my body except my eyes to see Larry Fitzgerald in a Giants uniform. That guy is an absolute monster. I’ve never seen a wide receiver dominate a postseason the way he did. Stunning.

I won’t sell any organs for Anquan Boldin, but I’d still be pretty darn happy to see him in the swamps of Jersey.

I hate Plaxico, I hate his stupid sweatpants, and I really hate that damn glock. If he’d stayed home that night, I truly believe this would have been our game to lose. Oh, well. I’m still ready to welcome him back with open arms next year. But the sweats and the glock have to stay home.

Finally, I’m gonna go pop in my Super Bowl XLII DVD and rewatch the greatest game ever played.
