Giants 31, Cowboys 24: We're alive!

Now that was much more like the New York Giants football team we have come to know and love the past few seasons.

Resilience in the face of adversity. A defense that flew to the football and punished Tony Romo despite the Dallas quarterback's big passing numbers. A couple of big plays from the running backs. A huge special teams play from Domenik Hixon.

All of it led to a season-saving 31-24 victory that puts the Giants (7-5) right back in thick of the NFC playoff race.

"It was an outstanding win for our team. The big thing I think was the contribution of all three areas tonight. That is the way we want to play. Offense, defense, and special teams, all making outstanding contributions," said head coach Tom Coughlin. "I was proud of the way they battled back and showed that mental toughness tonight."

Here is center Shaun O'Hara after the game.

"This was just a great team win," O'Hara said. " We stopped them when we had to. Our offense came through when we needed points. This is the way we are used to playing football. We need to just keep playing like this and remember what this feels like."

By the way, Giants defensive end Justin Tuck called Dallas lineman Flozell Adams a "dirtbag" for his role in an altercation at the end of the first half.

"It takes a coward and some more words that I can’t say right here to push a guy in the back when the play is dead," Tuck said.

    Great win!

Eli looked a little shaky but with his foot it’s understandable.

    STILL ALIIIVEE!!!

is it his back foot or left fooot????

cuz he sure as hell threw off the back one more.

…I don’t think it was the foot.

I think it was Eli trying to force things…when all he had to do was step into it and let it go.

"It ain't over till its over"---

by FreeBradshaw on Dec 6, 2009 10:09 PM EST up reply actions

It is his right foot..the one he needs to plant..

But that wasn’t his problem..your right he was looking for stuff that wasn’t there and should have just taken what they were giving him..I’ll say this, Eli is one tough player..He gets whacked on just about every pass play..but just gets up and goes again..I have noticed after watching him over time that he spends too much time pointing out his protection, and teams this year know it, hence they give him a couple of looks, then he calls out his adjustments then they settle back into what they planned on throwing at him…net result: He’s getting hammered.

by Bobbiblue on Dec 7, 2009 8:03 AM EST up reply actions

    yea..

I think its more happy feet than his injured foot hurting him

I do think stuff is there. On basically all of those deep throws, the guy was open if he puts more arm into it.

"It ain't over till its over"---

by FreeBradshaw on Dec 7, 2009 8:27 AM EST up reply actions

    True..

He threw alot of ‘one-bouncers’ yesterday..so the foot has to play a part in that..I hope he doesn’t suffer a ‘stress reaction’ in his arm if there is such a thing..

by Bobbiblue on Dec 7, 2009 8:38 AM EST up reply actions

    On Eli

I think it possible that the low throws are an over correction to his tendency to high throws. In past games, he often overthrew recievers deep. Last night he was just a little under. On the end zone interception, Eli should have taken the sack or scrambled, for there was no way he could have stepped into that particular throw. He lacks the advantage enjoyed by such as Drew Brees which is recievers that will come back and fight for the ball, with the possible exception of Boss.

by Jolly on Dec 7, 2009 8:55 AM EST up reply actions

Couple of good points here Jolly..

Perhaps a little compensation for the high throws..and knowing when he just needs to throw it away..Also Eli should just take what they are offering up..He missed a couple of huge bombers, which tells me he still hasn’t mastered the Meadowlands.

by Bobbiblue on Dec 7, 2009 9:01 AM EST up reply actions

    Agreed indeed

At least one of those bombs that failed was due to the receiver. Smith on deep middle route, instead of slowing down thereby keeping the defender shielded, maintains speed resulting in the ball coming in hip high rather than shoulder high. This misjudgement of the ball by Smith results in a deflection by the defender. You can not ask any quarterback to hit a two foot window at 40 yards. The receiver must adjust to the ball and the defender. Of course it was an underthrown ball by Eli. My point is that Eli’s errors are magnified by his receiver’s errors.

by Jolly on Dec 7, 2009 9:21 AM EST up reply actions

    Very good point..

The recievers are young and still learning how to adjust to the ball.

by Bobbiblue on Dec 7, 2009 9:53 AM EST up reply actions

    Two big keys

YAC and no missed tackles. It was one of our better YAC games I can remember, especially considering that there were so few completions. Smith usually doesn’t do much there and he had a bunch, plus Jacobs, of course. And I can’t really think of any missed tackles or blown coverages (when Williams got free down the sideline late it was because Bruce Johnson fell) – that combination meant that Dallas really had to work for their yards, a nice change from previous weeks.

    Great game BUT...

We got picked apart down the middle of the field ALL DAY with pass plays. No wonder the Cowboys threw like 55 times…watching them struggle early with their run game made me think they should have just thrown on every down for the rest of the game.

by 732jerseyP on Dec 6, 2009 9:42 PM EST reply actions

    yeah

if ‘the giants we’ve come to know and love’ means the horrendous secondary which, as you said, gives up MASSIVE yardage down the middle of the field (witten+austin+williams=30 catches, yes THIRTY, 320 yards, 3 TDs), then yeah, that was them.

but, f*** it…. we live to see another day. survive and advance.

    bend and don't break....

stopped the run this time…and stopped the pass last time.

Dallas is talented enough and matches up against the Giants to where that’s how its gotta go.

You can’t let up the big, quick TD…and that’s what they did.

No big plays (was there a catch over 20 yards?).

    Congrats...

    Big win for you guys.

Question – How the hell did Flozell Adams not get kicked out of the game? It’s dumbfounding.

Anyway, enjoy that win to the fullest this week. A certain team that has your number is coming to town next Sunday!

by JimmyK on Dec 6, 2009 9:46 PM EST reply actions

    Giants Offense

Yeah, they won, but it was the most un-Giant like offense. The four scores took all of 4 minutes. No ball control, no systematic methodical marches down the field. Will take the win, but they cant keep winning like this.

On D, tackling was solid, something to build on

    Eli and Smith

for as money as they can be…damn near costed us.

I mean, Smith is wide open…yet Eli throws off his back foot (STILL does this….) and throws a goose that luckiliy falls harmlessly. He got bit in the cornhole on the Manningham one that he did…ELi, you just can’t do this.

    Step into it…jeeez.

    And Steve…you gotta catch those.

This game was closer than it should’ve been.

Defense couldn’t get off the field…yet, they didn’t let up the big play and pretty much got off the field on third down toward the EZ

Only one TD was ’legit". One was off a short field (Bradshaw….) and the other was in garbage type.

Really, bend but don’t breat, make plays. D played well.

Intrigued to see Cofield man up, he was beast mode. Tuck was pissed all night. Osi and Kiwi played very well too (when Osi was rushing the passer…ugh…).

…and hey, we got ourselves a MLB.

Jonathon Goff, while out of position against Witten (hey…I think he can learn, he wasn’t horrible out there in that ) was damn…DAMN good against the run.

Aaron Rouse…damn good against the run.

I think the whole TE thing needs to be solved by bumping with Boley..and covering over the top with Ross.

What will the media dream up next on Romo???..The guy posts a 392 yard, 112.1 QB rating and they lambast him..Unreal..What’s next?..Will they blame him for taking a rumored “dump” before the game?..Romo, Witten, Williams, and Austin did not lose this game..two things lost it..We stopped their running game (2.0 ypc) and Flozell Adams..I say we send that cheapshot artist a gameball, hat and tee-shirt..

by Bobbiblue on Dec 7, 2009 8:20 AM EST up reply actions

    you said it

cofield was in absolute beast mode. the TE thing can be solved by… not playing against jason witten, perhaps? the man is a beast, and if we play dallas a 3rd time, he will absolutely destroy us once again – we have no answer for him.

the run d was great, the pass D terrible as usual — really as bad as we’ve looked all season; the only difference was we didn’t give up the home run ball today. is there ANYTHING we can do about this secondary? anything?!

Pass D not all that awful

they stoped the run and did not give up deep balls they let Dallas have the underneath stuff kinda what they gave NE in the SB I was pleased with the performance though Philly offers more threats on O.

by Landeta on Dec 6, 2009 10:19 PM EST up reply actions

I'm not getting to excited BUT

it’s sweet to sweap the Cowboys!

Goff looked quick in some pass plays and was in the backfield a few times but nothing great nor horrible we’ll see.

Welcome back BARRY COFIELD! I think Ed posted the MG story about D-Line fearing for their job well big Barry resoponded and if he can keep it up maybe he’s with the team next year.

Speaking of D-Tackle I think Canty is better suited for D-Tackle keep him there and not at end! Nothing spectacular but he got a constant push and was in the backfield a lot a nice game for him.

Kiwi again nothing great but was in the backfield did a nice job on the runs. He could do better pass rushing but seems to be a more stable player than Osi.

Boley is a solid LB and can cover well.

Clint Sintim Welcome to the NFL! He’s very raw and I don’t know what position will fit him best, LB or DE but he can develop into a nice pass rusher.

Bill Sheridan, nice job mixing up the fronts and whether he meant to do it or not the D seemed a lot more motivated so I have to give him credit.

Terrel Thomas thats the way to tackle

Aaron Rouse not a horrible pick up and he supports on the run niceley if KP or another FA Free saftey comes in he could play at SS.

    Offensively, well they were average.

Eli not your best work that pick was Bad Eli from pre 07 Super Bowl run.

O-line I don’t know whats wrong but I’ll give Booth some credit filling in for Snee. He was not as awful as he’s been in the past filling in for guys.

BJ and AB nothing great and AB Hold on to the ball! but both guys had two big plays that scored and set up another.

Smitty caught 7 or 8 balls but could of caught 10 and a TD he dropped way too many.

Nicks when this guys actually knows what he’s doing out there he’s going to be a lot like Anquan Boldin, JR may of had a bad offseason but Nicks is one of the few bright spots.

Boss needs to work on his run blocking but other than that he should play both ways that run when Eli was getting sacked was GREAT! I love him put him at D-Line LB Saftey RB he could do it all!

Good win and it puts Dallas in a real bind. They have NO SD, Philly and Wash leftt they could well be 9-7 as could the G-Men and now we have the Tie Breaker. I’m not getting too excited because they were not great today but they showed guts which is the most important thing. Let’s just hope they can build some confidence off this one.

by Landeta on Dec 6, 2009 10:08 PM EST reply actions

    I'll go 50/50 with Ed

on this being a Giants Football type win. We stuffed the run yes, but we didn’t run ourselves. We won because of the big play, and it took a couple of those.

And I’ll take that of course because Dallas is no pushover but despite the win, we should all still be harping on the running game this week. We’ll need it in Philly. But still, great to see gutsy play from our guys.

I saw lots of Kudo’s worthy stuff. I really liked the way the shake-up on D personnel worked out and it’s great to get a win in the first try of the new Goff/Osi experiment.

Romo’s huge numbers show just how important it is to stop the run. We beat a near 400 yd passer because we dominated 1st and 2nd down.

Anybody else catch the pushoff/facemask on Roy’s TD on Webster? I can’t figure out why that wasn’t called by the refs or mentioned by Aikman. Seemed obvious to me (and my neighbors who undoubtedly heard my rant thru the firewall).

Great win overall and I can’t wait for our next opponent to come up the turnpike.

by Jaybat on Dec 6, 2009 10:17 PM EST reply actions

    GREAT GREAT POINT JAY!

“Romo’s huge numbers show just how important it is to stop the run. We beat a near 400 yd passer because we dominated 1st and 2nd down”

Stoping the run, you see what happens! Thats what has killed this D all year and they stepped up today. Cofiled showed up and Canty did nice work. Rouse came up hard as did TT. Kiwi and Tuck were stout too. Let Dallas have the underneath but don’t give up easy TD’s and runs it makes things a lot eaisier.

by Landeta on Dec 6, 2009 10:22 PM EST up reply actions

    Didn't run consistently

But, we did get a big play from Bradshaw, a touchdown run from Jacobs and enough push to be able to use a little play-action. So, progress.

by Ed Valentine on Dec 6, 2009 10:41 PM EST up reply actions

Sorry, but I don't think was a penalty...

…and I’m willing to be in the minority here. It always seems like a penalty when it happens against one’s own team, right?

That kind of physical play to get separation from the DB happens all the time in the first 5 yds. off the line…

I sure as hell wouldn’t be. All those comments above don’t leave you a lot of room for something new and different for Kudos and WWs. They’ve covered it like a rug. I can't believe he was allowed to finish the game

Pushing Tuck then going after Kiwi?

He deserves to be suspended one game.

If he isn’t, Goodell is a ignorant POS. He cracks down on all this bullcrap like Chad Johnson’s celebrations (who watching that doesn’t like that aside from opposing fans?)…yet, 1/2 of the fine to Flozell?

I just hope they hate the eagles too.

They seem to ‘hate Dallas’ and get up for that one…but the Eagles have had their number more.

And a lot of it has to do with them not coming out and showing their balls against Philly.

I’d love for them to man up against Philly.

Their good and IMO the best in the division at this point…but I don’t think they’re as good as we made them to be the first go round.

Its gonna take Eli making those deep passes when their open. Its gonna take Smith catching the easy ones (and …of course, those deep bombs if Eli does put them on the money).

I wanna see the heart they played with at times today…not just in the Eagles game..but every game from here on out.

They lose, they lose…but leave it all out on the field for chrissakes….

He as the ability to beat the man coverage and make some plays.

I think the Giants get up for the Eagles I just think since Philly got D-Jackson, Avant, Celick and Maclin the match-up favors the Eagles where as in year pasts when Philly only had Westbrook and the Giants had Plax the Giants had all of the match up advantages .

I’m with you though, show some grit and guts like they did today and improve a bit and I’ll be happy.

Here’s who won the game for us..turned the momentum around if you will..that cheap-shot artist Yozell Adams at the end of the 1st half..We declined the penalty, because we didn’t need one after that…Our guys came out of the tunnel on fire in the second half..We shut that running game down big-time.

by Bobbiblue on Dec 6, 2009 10:37 PM EST reply actions

    Bobi

it was calm and a lot if not almost all of the Cowboys passing was underneath stuff so wind and weather did not affect a lot of the throws. Eli just sucked passing the ball today I think. Lets hope he gets it out of his system before next week.

by Landeta on Dec 6, 2009 10:45 PM EST up reply actions

    Yes your right Land..

Eli was off the mark..again..Although Smitty should have caught that TD pass that was one of few accurate passes all day from Eli..and again they didn’t use Boss much, but I guess they had to hold in in for blocking, which is great if your hitting the passes…Witten lit us up all day, Romo had a great day, but bottom-line, we shut their running game down..and I’ll give Sheridan (for a change) and I’m sure under Coughlin’s influence for making those changes..The entire defense responded and the rookies, the line, everybody stuffed them in the second half..You could see it coming during the first half that these ‘new blood’ kids were going thru an accelerated learning curve in game-time pressure and they handled it big-time..and again I say: “Thanks Yozell”..what you did was better than anyone could ever offer up as bulletin board fodder..

we have been lit up *all year* over the middle...

…by TEs/WRs/RBs. Our D has a lot to prepare for — they can beat us on slants over the middle, post routes deep to Jackson/Maclin, Celek up the seam, or check downs to the RB. While the pass rush has been nothing to write home about as well, the middle of our defense has been our achilles heel all season, IMO.

by Step up and make big plays on Dec 6, 2009 10:41 PM EST reply actions

    I'm fearfull too

Eli, the O-line, and the RB’s have to play a lot better in order to win they were not good today and Smith needs to hold on to more balls.

I have a bad feeling Eli is decending into his typicall December slump.

    Kickoff coverage needs to improve.

The Run D needs to play the way they did again next week. Give up the short stuff but don’t allow the big plays will help next week big time.

If they play with Guts like they did today they’ll have a shot. I don’t kow that they’ll do it but lets hope they play hard.

    gotta smack around McNabb.

even if Romo was very good today…they at least hit him more than a few times…tho not necessarily on 3rd down much.

Gotta hit McNabb, even if he drives a little bit.

I really don’t see McNabb getting smacked around a lot…I’d like to see what happens when he is.

Eli was damn good at times today....

more bad decisions than when he was at his best of course…but the droped passes by Smith, the not knowing where you are by Manningam really aren’t his fault.

And the bad throws, the ones on the run, the 2 deep ones to Smith, the one ball in the EZ to HAM…seem correctable to me.

I think he’ll notice what he had there in the film and know what he’s gotta do.

But overall, if his WR would’ve helped him out more on those plays that should’ve been made…he could’ve had a much better line/game.

I'm convinced Manninggham gave up that pick..

When Eli was forced to heave it up..A) He should have thrown it away.bad decision ..but B) Manningham should have moved towards the ball and broke it up..Rookie mistake. We can’t afford anymore dumb drive-killers.

I'm as worried as I was before today....

    Maybe more so.

Not cuz I’m scared of the Eagles. I ’ve seen plenty of their games lately that shows that they can get in their own way in games.

I’m more worried about if the Giants show the same hunger they did today…to do what your screen name says.

That’s what seperated this game from the AZ, SD games we should have won, but didn’t.

Was it because this was Dallas and they showed up…or is it cuz this is the Giants and they know that this sort of hunger in games can tilt any game in their favor?

We can beat those 2 guys too.

And I’ll be saying it all week, I hope the Giants coaches and players are all pissed at what’s gone on against Philly the past few times.

The 2nd reg. season game last year. The playoff game. Game 1 this year.

they seem invincible against the Giants.

I dunno what the problem was there...

but think about it…12-4..bye going in, Eagles were lucky to get in.

The eagles given their record and situation, just were more hungry..and given difference in score, that’s all it was!

Now, the Giants are the dogs, no matter what the line says.

Motivation should not be a problem the rest of the way.

    Philly

It wasnt so long ago when we were demolished by the Eagles. I think the players and coaches have that bad taste in their mouths from that game and are going to give it their all next Sunday night. If Minnesota lose tonight, they’d be 2 games back of NO and hopefully by week 17 they be resting their starters. But at this point every game is a must win.

Now they’re 2 games back of the Saints, and I don’t see the Saints losing 2 games this year. Chances are the Saints will have locked up home field & the Vikings will have locked up the #2 seed, so that week 17 game will be as meaningless for them as it was for the Giants last year.

I am proud of them, they never gave up today…We win this game next week and it is I predicted, anybody’s shot for the division..Dallas has the Chargers now and then NO…Things are tightening up.

It’s Philly that we need to worry about now. With Dallas’s schedule they’ll be lucky to be over .500 when the season ends.

    Flozelle Adams is a douchebag.

Eli had some bad throws, but he also had Smith drop 3 or 4 (one for a touchdown), that can really break up a rhythm. He made a poor choice in the endzone (at least overthrow so their is no chance of an INT), but I really think his foot HAS to be bothering him to skip some in like he did.

It has not been discussed but how about the G-Men going to a 2-Min drill to get things started after Dallas takes a 10-0 lead? That first TD got them going and they used the 2-min drill to get it going. When a team is desperate they’ll do whatever it takes to win. Let’s see if they use it next week against Philly

    the problem with no-huddle

is that it gets our offense off the field a lot quicker. Part of the reason those Bills teams couldn’t win Super Bowls was b/c they couldn’t control T.O.P, and when playing elite offenses their D just got exhausted

And those Bills teams had great Ds as well as Os. Also, Marv Levy was a great coach in all aspects of the game, except on the sidelines. Parcells clearly outcoached him in the SB. All that talent and the Bills couldn’t win the big one.

I think we’re giving the Eagles too much credit, as many were giving Dallas.

They’re better then Dallas, but juts as beatable.

All I want is for them to play with the same heart they did today.

Rouse, Goff and Cofield (see…middle of the defense plays well and they stop the run?) played with all sorts of hunger (Rouse had about 25 tackles).

    That’s all I want, and I think that’s really all they’ll need.

The Eagles can bumble their way out of games.

Don’t let them get confidence early, or at least keep it close in the first half (probably more important just to keep it within one score at least).

They’re not gonna have the offensive outburst like they did last time.

    cheers guys

It's not that I'm saying we're due a playoff win, but I didn't have my license to drive when we won our last one...

    nah....

as long as you’re not all “Fear the Star. Giants suck”….you’re not a troll.

Dallas fans, or any fans are most def. welcome as long as they don’t instigate.

    Their pass rush was absent.

    Now that´s a day!!!!!

My soccer team wins his 6th brazilian championship after 17 years without a title and the Giants reborn from the ashes!!!!

Yeah, we like NFL here in Brazil.

    About Flozell...

The NFL is going to have to do something to this douchebag. Both games this year he took dirty, cheap shots at Justin Tuck. I’m glad Tuck didn’t get into it through the media right after the game and showed the difference between a classy player like him and a douchebag like Adams.

And if the NFL doesn’t do anything to Adams, they’re just cementing the fact that they love the Cowboys and will do whatever Jerry Jones wants.

    gotta agree with the Scotsman

there better be a letter from the NFL in his inbox this week with a nice sized number attached to it. how about they double it to 25 this time?

I'll be awaiting the outcome too

Money is not the issue. Fining him more does nothing for a “punishment”. It won’t happen, but I would, like many of you, like to see him suspended the rest of the season. Now THAT’S a punishment that should should make him think, and at the same time, take over a quarter of his paycheck for this year.

Or, how about this. We get a free pass. Next time we play them, we get not one, but 2 cheap shots, at any point of the game on anyone, by anyone. I’d take that over a suspension. Now that would REALLY make ya think about doing it again, huh?

I can picture it now…warm ups. Romo stretching, Jacobs comes up behind and choke slams him to the ground. Ooh, and for the second one we can have Feagles find Jerry Jones and kick him as hard as he can in the nuts. Apology accepted league.

that last paragraph made me lol

"[The Giants] beat us down. We were beat by a grown-man team, a team we want to be like one day. They came in here and took it to us. Out-manned us, out-gunned us. ... It wasn't even close." - Raheem Morris, 9/27/09

2009 a great giants season, its in the book. We beat Dallas twice.

We ruined the opening of their palace, we wrote it on the wall of the locker room, and we beat them again after falling asleep during a 1-5 run.
    Giantesque !
I forgive you for all the bad football you made me watch

Beating Dallas twice always makes for a nice part of the season.

    ….but we’re just getting started.

    Sure is nice

Beating Dallas twice this year were the best thing our Giants did.
The good feeling will last the whole season.

    Things to note..plus Red Zone..

We did what I thought we had to in order to win..We stopped their running game..they averaged a measly 2.0 yards per carry..We gave up almost almost 400 yards passing to Romo…but it only netted them 17 points, the last TD to Williams occurred because Corey fell asleep at the wheel on that play..
I thought our red zone offense and defense was the best we have seen all year..We made Dallas look as awful as we have been looking in those categories all year..Romo had to heave the ball up 41 times and his 392 yards and the112.1 QB rating looks really nice on the stat sheet, but the botton-line is they could not score points..Plus if we had done a better job covering Witten..Romo’s numbers would have been right around what Eli’s were (252)…We made the most of our 21 minutes TOP..Most of their 38 minutes TOP came in the first through midway second Qtr..that is when our guys finally proved to us all that they showed up for the game..That swing pass to Jacobs was a thing of beauty..He hit BJ in stride pointing him right up the field and he took it to the house..Also, as I said before we owe Flozell Adams a debt of gratitude..maybe even a gameball..his dirty play fired up our defense..Our guys came out in the second half like wild animals.

    Confidence,

the Giants got some back against the Girls and a win against the Iggles and we can ride that a long way I think, I wasn’t very confident going into this game, and I’m not saying I expect the Giants to win next week, but if they do, it may be another magical season like 2007.
