New York Giants News & Notes: Kenny Phillips Tries to Put a Finger on it

Kenny Phillips tries to put a finger on the Giants woes on his official blog, and for the most part he sounds just like any of us:

"I know this is a good team, I know how hard these guys work and how much they want to win, but for some reason it’s not showing and that’s the most frustrating thing. Sometimes I have to change the channel."

I don't like to blame injuries, but the defense hasn't been the same since Kenny went down. He looked like he was about to become a star this season, and his replacements have been nothing short of awful.  Check out his blog post for an update on his rehab status.

Chris Canty talked about preparing for his first game against his former team this weekend (Canty missed the Giants first game against the Cowboys due to injury), and whether his knowledge of the Cowboys will give the Giants any advantages

"There is something special about this game. It’s an opportunity for us to compete as a football team. It’s a division game. This means a lot for us and we have taken notice of that. We are prepared as such and we are going to give ourselves the best opportunity to be successful on Sunday... I think both of teams know each other very well. I don’t think it has a lot to do with me at all. These teams play each other twice a year, a couple of years back where the Giants and Cowboys played each other three times a year, including the playoff game. These football teams know each other very well. There are not going to be a lot of surprises. Like I said, it is what it is."

Tom Coughlin sort of addressed the speculation that Osi Umenyiora has been demoted and won't be starting this weekend:

Q: There has been talk of Osi coming out on running downs - playing only passing downs. What can you tell us about that?

A: He will play run downs, too.

Q: Will he start?

A: We'll have to see on that. We will play everybody.

KP we miss you

more than anyone thought we would, get well.
Finally we my see some changes on D. Starting Kiwi over Osi is a must, I don’t think Kiwi is a great run stopper but compared to Osi he’s a vast improvement. Hopefully this and the starting of Canty and Goff can light a fire under the defense, after all we have seen this year, it certainly can’t hurt.

KP

Does anyone else feel like the near future of this franchise is tied to KP’s surgically repaired knee? Without him the list of holes to fill in the roster just seems too great to overcome … LB, OLine, DT, S …

by potroast on Dec 5, 2009 8:39 AM EST reply actions

for this season at least yea...

in the long run, they should be able to replace him if he never comes back. You can get a good starting caliber safety in the middle of the draft, or even in the bargain bin with FA( Sensabaugh on the Pies and Sean Jones on the Eggs)

Reese should learn from this too.

You don’t keep 3 safeties on the roster. And maybe if you get a backup, investing more in it than someone like CC Brown (who stunk on the Texans too) or previously Sammy Knight…might make sense instead of keeping wastes of roster spots like Sinorice Moss, Gerris Wilkenson, Guy Whimper…etc.

We have too many WR and LB’s. Depth was needed elsewhere.

Holes to fill and the near future?

I wouldn’t consider it too great to overcome, in the sense that KP doesn’t return. I would consider this a lesson to be learned, and corrected as we move into the near future. It is obviously true that some areas have to be looked at, and gone over with a fine-tooth comb. And yes, OL, DT, LB and S do come to mind!

At this time though, it does seem a little hard to prioritize the greatest need in order of importance. Even with KP and now AP’s futures in the unknown, it would be safe to start with S. I think we have to have reservations of opinions on Goff, until he plays more to decide on our MLB’s future. This holds true for Sintim and actually Beckum too.

As for the OL collectively, something is not exactly right? As a unit, they’re not terribly old, but do have some mileage due to their playing time. Though McKenzie is getting up there, so are the minor injuries, like perhaps Seuberts. You almost want to think that as a unit, it’s just a down year and next year can be different. But with Beatty getting some time, this is hopefully a step in the right direction for the future entrenchment! Adding youth here will help, even if it means a minor reshuffling!

For Freddie and Rocky, they’re on the wrong side of their careers. Not much more to say about that! Cofields entering his prime, though he seemingly is not playing like it, but again, perhaps a down year? I’ll give him the benefit of the doubt and think so! Canty’s investment makes him almost a lock for the future! Even though Alford’s out, i think he can replace Freddie or Rocky, even in a situational role. Either or though, with all things considered, a rookie with high grades should be explored!

It’s worth noting that with all thing’s considered, a lot will probably hinge on what happens in FA that may/will determine the draft. We still have a very good-strong nucleus to add to and some untapped potential for next year?! Nonetheless though, the Giants seem to be going through a time of transition!

I sure hope Canty shows up.

Maybe a Bernard or Kiwi sighting would do well too?

Maybe keeping Osi off the field helps him be fresher for those pass rushing downs (I hope that’s the logic). Something like that worked for that KGB dude from the Packers, so why not do it with Osi?

I caught a clip from ESPN that had Chris Berman saying to ’watch out for this name, Gartrell Johnson". He even picked the Giants to win!

Maybe he can be our Marion Barber?

Just hold onto the damn ball Gartrell.

I think Berman's on to something.

From the little I’ve seen of him, I like what I’ve seen—he runs hard, very hard.

He's gonna be all we got.....

Jacobs is whatever he is right now.

Ware is concussed, I’d be surprised if he even suits up.

Not sure on Bradshaw, but even if the ankle is good to go…the foot is not gonna be.

…we don’t have anyone else.

…but your right, I think Gartrell could be better than them all right now. He seems hungry. He also looks like Marion Barber.

My first reaction to Gartrell

Was, who is that? It was against the Bucs and he had that nice run that was called back by a holding call. I don’t think he has top-end speed, but it looks like he has good acceleration, which is good in tight spaces or a closing hole! If he does see some time, i just don’t want him to try and be a hero, which can lead to TO’s.

The 2010 lineup emerges

Canty in
Goff in

Now…how about more Sintim?

Giants win the next two and playoff conversations can start again. Not until that happens.

The turn around began last year the start of that Buffalo game. They were getting beat pretty bad until they took the ball out of Eli’s hands (remember his turn overs in the 1st half?) and started to ram it done the throat of the defense. This was the game that they finally had Eli concentrate on short-medium SAFE passes that were set up with the play action afforded by sticking with the running game. They need to get back to having Eli “manage” the game again, establish the running game and pray that the changes this week on Defense will light a spark on that side of the ball.

you mean the blizzard game?

There were down 14-0 in the 1st…but they were smart and kept it on the ground. It was 17-14 at half Giants…so I dunno that they were getting beat badly.

They didn’t really throw cuz Eli was bad…they only threw 15 times cuz it was a BLIZZARD (but toomer had a very good game if I recall).

I agree with the sentiment tho. I’d love to see Jacobs and Bradshaw run for 300 yards and 3TD’s combined again.

Wow! You have a great memory!

All I really remember was that Ely really stunk and until Gilbride really committed to the ground game, they looked pretty bad. For whatever reason, Ely turned the corner (towards the Super Bowl run) the second half of this game and became more of a game manager. He really cut down on his mistakes/turn-overs and wasn’t trying to win the game by himself. The Giants went back to their roots: Great running game AND great defensive play.

i hate to blame injuries too.

but really, who isnt hurt on defense, aaron ross and phillips were the reason the secondary was good, and with them gone we have the worst secondary in football.

too much talent to be playing like this

Bill Sherdin is not the one to run this defense! Chris Canty and Tuck dropping in to pass coverage at times! Please. I would love to see Romeo Crennel running the defense, he is avabile.
