Upset Osi lashes out

You had to know this would happen sooner or later. Osi Umenyiora, ineffective much of the season and largely scapegoated for the team's defensive struggles, finally reached the breaking point after Sunday afternoon's defeat.

"I couldn’t really explain what I’m feeling right now, disappointment is an understatement, in everything, the way everything has played out this year has been absolute nonsense, very disappointed, disheartened, discouraged, whatever you want to call it,' Umenyiora said. "What did I play, five snaps today? I don’t know, I don’t know what happened. I thought I was the problem. It’s an unbelievable situation, man. Last game at Giants Stadium, probably as a Giant, just the way everything has unfolded has been unbelievable. I never would have dreamt this in a million years."

It is pretty obvious there have to be changes on the porous Giants defense for 2010. And Osi might just be right, one of those could well be sending him packing. I know many Giants fans still love him, but he's not what he used to be. Or, what he thinks he is.

Tom Coughlin called the defeat "Very disappointing, obviously. Very, very poor performance by our team."

"I wasn’t prepared for it, let’s put it that way. I had thought we had a good week of practice for it being Christmas week. I thought we had an outstanding Friday practice on Christmas day. I thought that we had talked all week about consistency and about playing at a high level, one game carrying you into the next game and continuing to play well. I’m at a loss for words."

Eli Manning called the loss "shocking and disappointing." Several other players called it "embarrassing."

For the record...

…We would be stupid to let Osi go. He can’t handle the business if he’s not on the field!

by kingofatlanta on Dec 27, 2009 8:25 PM EST reply actions

explain please

he was starting most of the season and was absent in the pass rush and was victimized in the run game.

how do you justify your statement?

by cntrlalt on Dec 27, 2009 8:33 PM EST up reply actions

Let's get Peppers!!

What are the chances of the Giants letting Osi go and sign Julius Peppers?

by uberfunction on Dec 28, 2009 8:56 AM EST up reply actions

That would be great

When Peppers is on, he’s unstoppable.

by njgiant on Dec 28, 2009 9:57 AM EST up reply actions

lets not be ridiculous

Peppers would cost a ton of dough. to throw money into a position that we are still the deepest in is absurd. Plus alot of Carolina fans would argue that Peppers takes plays off – a sentiment echoed by others in the league.

Sometimes the fruit looks sweeter than it is.

by wilddre22 on Dec 28, 2009 12:08 PM EST up reply actions

True

We are deep in D-linemen, but we’re deep in quantity, not quality. Sure, Peppers would cost an assload of $$ and he takes plays off, but what guy doesn’t take a play or two off. We’ve had games where our defense has taken a whole game off. Like I posted, when Peppers is “on”, he’s unstoppable and IMO none of our D-linemen can do what he does when he is in gear….and yeah, I know about the fruit looking sweet. On paper, it looked like we had a sweet defense, but on the field, they were just sour.

by njgiant on Dec 28, 2009 12:28 PM EST up reply actions

truth is..

from the rumors at the start of the season, Osi seemed unhappy with his contract. Word has it he wants Julius Peppers money. If the Giants are willing to pay Osi that much, why not get Julius Peppers.

And let’s be honest here, Osi looks like he takes plays off when he’s been on the field. Anyway, keep or let him go, I don’t care, I just want to see our defense restor its pride.

by uberfunction on Dec 28, 2009 2:42 PM EST up reply actions

he was absent for 3/4 of the year

and a big reason the Panthers are only good until now.

Why the hell would you want that?

wants to play in a 3-4, the panthers run the same type of defense as the giants. he’d never come here.

peppers wants to go to a place like baltimore or even the jets where he can come off the edge from a standing start

cant blame osi 100%

Ill justify, osi is coming off a serious knee injury/surgery!

yea he has never been known as a run defender, but add that with the fact that he couldnt strengthen and train his legs in the offseason bcuz he had to rehabilitate his knee.

no squats/dead lifts/ strenuous leg workouts.. only workouts provided in the system for rehabilitation.. imo that is why he has struggled more this year againts the run and has had a weakened pass rush.

dont let him go.. id let go bernard/robbins/clark/dockery go before osi

by semsemma on Dec 28, 2009 9:54 AM EST up reply actions

And Michael Johnson

I completely agree with you semsemma… I wouldn’t let Osi go just yet – it usually takes a whole year before you’re back to 100% after his type of surgery. But I’d love to see Clark, C.C., and Johnson all take a hike before next season. Sheridan has to go too.

by one-bar on Dec 28, 2009 1:01 PM EST up reply actions

I dunno on Osi...

Its a little out of hand to blame all this on him…this year is really NOT on him.

I don’t think its out of the question to shop him…but if its for nothing more then a 4th rounder, what’s the point?

He’ll be a lot healthier next year, hopefully the rest of the line too.

Osi should stay.

But really, I don’t blame him for wanting to leave…

i'm certainly not

blaming osi for anything except running his mouth. the woes of the defense aren’t his fault specifically.

i agree that his value won’t be very high, he’s been exposed and coming off a knee injury. a 3-4 team might take him but not for much.
the dolphins might be interested to replace jason taylor, or maybe the ravens who love that type of pass rushing end.

by cntrlalt on Dec 27, 2009 8:40 PM EST up reply actions

I say give Osi

Another offseason to get that knee into shape. An injury like his does take a couple years to get right. To just kick him to the curb would be overreacting. The NY Giant problems are higher up the food chain than Osi, so let’s not start this dynamic or we’ll end up with the same eff’d up DC next year and be right back here a year from now wondering how such a good defense ended up so badly. Sheridan must, MUST go.

by DukBudr on Dec 27, 2009 9:11 PM EST up reply actions

agree on that.

And on Sheridan..since he was only the DC for this season, I can’t give him any benefit like I would for Coughlin and Gilbride (especially since all in all, O wasn’t the problem), its just…while he has to take the fall, this really isn’t all on him.

I’d be pretty shocked if he stayed on…its not out of the question, but there will be too much calling for his head..

There was just too many injuries..and also, many of the guys on the field were injured.

Important players too..like Tuck, Osi (coming back and not 100%) Robbins and Cofield.

That’s last year’s DL…ALL not 100% basically the whole year for whatever reason.

Agree 100% with you about Osi

You get value make a deal, if not keep him. He should be better next year and if they get a new DC he might fit a new system better. He played 4 plays and they got blown out I expect him to be pissed. I’m as dissapointed with him as any other Giants fan out there but at the same time it’s not all on him this year the D has major issues and it can not be blamed on a single guy.

I think Osi knew something was wrong

All the way back at training camp. He – and others – were probay being asked to carry out a bad scheme and he knew it, but by saying so he gets labeled as “not on board” and the scheme’s failure is blamed on him.

On the other hand, I may have no idea what actually happened.

Maybe I haven’t seen enough of Goff to make a pure assessment but it could just be the system he’s in. But right now, I don’t see him as a game changing MLB.

Mechanical Engineer or not, there’s players who just have football intelligence, and some that don’t. He could have the smarts, but does he have the ability?

by uberfunction on Dec 28, 2009 2:46 PM EST up reply actions

Sure he does.

He’d be the starter earlier if he wasn’t out for all of last year.

Pierce was the starter for the next couple…now, hopefully they’ll move on.

No rookie, unless its Rolando McClain, will be better going forward then Goff.

McClain’s going top 10. So….Goff is the man, unless there’s a viable FA like Kirk Morrison.

This D isn't as bad as they have sometimes played

Against the Skind the D played better, not against a worse team, but they played better. It was helped by the Redskins being terrible but they didnt play this badly. Its clear that the Giants D can be somewhat effective against some teams (Oaland and the Redskins for example).

Losing Osi would be the proverbial straw..

that broke the Camel’s back. We can’t keep losing good players and still be competitive. We’ve lost Tiki, Strahan, Plax, Shockey, Spags and possibly Osi next? Who truly has stepped up and replaced that production? Smith has filled in BETTER than Plax, but what about the others I mentioned? We HAD a great running game, but we need two + players to replace what Tiki gave us.

Who’s filling in for Stray? Tuck? Yeah, right. Where’s he been lately? Kiwi? Non-existent. Osi? Yeah, right again. We don’t have the threat at the TE to keep teams honest anymore. We would if we used Boss, but we don’t, so another non-factor. Sheridan obviously does not motivate the guys like Spags did. Where does that leave us?? Out in the lurch..

Here’s my feeling on this.. Osi is lashing out again with what seems to be the truth. He feels the way he does because he knows Sheridan will probably be back next year. He told us in training camp, what the real deal was and we brushed it off as him being another spoiled NFL player. That he only played 5 snaps today is a joke and a further indictment of the coaching staff.
The next point is, perhaps Spags system is to blame here. We had him for two years. If Sheridan is indeed running the same system, maybe it’s past it’s sell by date. Maybe the league has just figured us out and we’ve been too slow to realize it. Spags D isn’t exactly tearing it up out here in STL, or winning alot of people over.

Bottom line is big changes need to happen for us to stay competitive and not just 8-8 giving up 40+ 4 times in a year competitive.

by lboogie25 on Dec 27, 2009 9:15 PM EST reply actions

Tuck

I don’t know about you but Tuck has actually been playing. From what I have been seeing these past few years, the real weakness is not having a top quality LB corps. This has been the strength of the Giants defense for decades. Let’s be honest here, Pierce is done, and if he isn’t, he’s surely on the downhill. Boley, he’s OK. Clark, Goffe, Blackburn? Solid backups but still lacking.

by uberfunction on Dec 28, 2009 9:05 AM EST up reply actions

OSI

Let me say one thing. When Spags was here this defense was great. Before and after Spags the defense SUCKED. OSI has a torn ACL. Anyone with an IQ over 5 knows it takes 2 yrs to fully recover from this injury. I also want to add that Justin Tuck with his torn labrum should have been on the bench for about 5 to 6 wks, to let the injury heal. What moron let him play ,and hurt our team for the next 6 wks. after the injury. Remember one thing, Coughlin never did anything with the Giants until Spags came along. Spags leaving for St Louis was the single most destructive thing the Giants have encountered in the last 10 yrs.

We can’t afford to lose Osi. As much as he hasn’t been the player from the past, his leadership is something we can’t lose, even if he only plays half the game.

We can’t dwell on this loss, we can hope (Boys are up 14-0 on DC) that Dallas loses. And focus on next week.

But to blame one player when we had so many injuries to the newly constructed D line, where we never had a chance to employ the new hybrid D that was fated for this team, is ludicris.

I hate to agree with Aikman, but it seems as though there is a massive leadership void on D...

…one which no one is willing to step up and fill. Our guys looked totally flat out there on D, lost, shellshocked, lacking intensity…you name it. They just come off as incredibly disinterested, which would lend credibility to the claims that the players haven’t bought into the system. Guys should be playing like they are fighting for their jobs. It is as though these guys feel powerless to watch the sinking ship go down, with no one wanting to be accountable and take responsibility for it.

AP is not worth keeping around simply for his organizational skills if he cannot make plays anymore on D, but someone is going to have to step up, assert himself, and take ownership of this defense next year. Games like this underscore just how much we lack someone on D with that Joey Porter-esque or Ray Lewis-esque fire, that presence that makes sure everyone matches intensity and is on the same page. Our guys simply don’t play as a unit on D.

The Osi situation

To preface, I’m a Vikings fan studying our next upcoming opponent (as I often do). As an outsider can somebody give me a quick synopsis of what happen to Osi. If I’m not mistaken he was considered one of the best DEs in the game only a couple years ago and he’s still not that old.

On a side note, isn’t it funny how quietly players decend in this league? I mean, one minute they’re all the rage and the next their just vanish completely. Fans of other clubs are often left asking each other “Hey, what ever happend to so-and-so?”. It’s a brutal and unforgiving game.

by Jayrome007 on Dec 27, 2009 10:51 PM EST reply actions

to be fair

Osi’ coming off a season ending injury. To expect him to be at the top of his game this season, would be unrealistic.

All in all..the guy is leading the team in sacks, for what its worth.

He was always a product of the other guy on the other side of the line, who was Michael Strahan.

When the LDE is not getting his push..Osi doesn’t do much.

Its not so much Osi..as much as it is Tuck being hurt for the whole year.

Everyone assumes Fox won't be back in Carolina...

…and if that is the case, can a guy like him get over the any hard feelings with the Tisch/Mara clan over never acceding to the post of HC?

It’s difficult for me to envision a scenario where he steps down a level and ends up back as our DC because he is head coaching material for any number of the 6-8 vacancies about to open up.

I don't think he'll get fired

and even if he does he’ll get a HC job.

I don’t think he has hard feeling with Tish/Mara if fact I read in the NY post Mara has a high regard for him, I just think he likes comming back here because well that’s were he really made a name for himself.

by Landeta on Dec 28, 2009 12:22 AM EST up reply actions

If he gets fired

I highly, highly doubt he gets an HC job right away. Not with Shanny, Gruden, and the Chin out there, plus whatever hot assistants there are around the league. He’ll coach again, but probably not right away

I think it depends on the amount of HC's oppenings

If there are 6 or 7 I think he would get one of those other openings if there are only 4 or 5 then he might not becasue of the guys you metnion.

by Landeta on Dec 28, 2009 12:35 AM EST up reply actions

Fox should not get fired

A team that started the season 0 -3 and put 11 guys on IR that still may end the season at 8-8 should not fire thier coach. The way I see it, Fox actually outcoached Coughlin.

Safety

Sometimes I wonder what our defense would of looked like if we picked up Dawkins over the summer. I mean, who would of thought that Philips would go down after the 2nd game. After this horrible defensive season… what’s really lacking is leadership. That guy would play with 2 broken arms if he had to. Though he laid his wrath on his Giants fans for (what is it 14 years), I totally respect that guy.

Osi Returning

As a Giants fan I can’t say Osi isn’t a tremendous player. I can’t sit here and undo the countless highlight reel plays that he can make and the outstanding impact he can have on a game.

And at the same time I want him gone. Osi to me, is not a Giants player. He might be spectacular on a different team—perhaps a team with a stronger Linebacker corps, but not the Giants. With each play Osi either runs himself out (leaving a nice gap to run towards), or he fails to shed his blocker. Osi is one dimensional. His speed is outrageous, but if you push him to the outside even slightly then he will circle around the pocket. There’s probably not a tackle in the league that can hold Osi long enough to keep him blocked after he wraps around, but in the same respect, there is no Quarterback who won’t find something else to do with the ball in that time.

Osi’s season has been defined by this. He runs, he gets pushed, he fails to change the game. When your game changer can’t change the game, then drop him. I know we can get something for Osi. Pro Bowler, Superbowl Ring…. someone will want him, and I say go for it. We could easily get a 2nd or 3rd round pick for Osi, which would help us grab more potential depth. Why keep Osi when he amounts to next to nothing. I respect Osi for his work as a Giants, and I understand why he’s upset. I’m not as angry as I was when I first heard this news, so I say, yeah, trade him. I just want to get something to drink and forget this week happened.

Wow, how many times have we said that this year. Oh well. Here’s to next season. toast

by RolloT on Dec 28, 2009 12:32 AM EST reply actions

I'm sure he'd consider the Giants job

He could take a Jim Caldwell type of a job, be the DC / Assistant coach until TC retires then take over the HC

Unfortunately I doubt the Panthers will let him go this year

Osi...

For 15yrs the Giants had a defensive end who used to talk about leaving, egotistical, etc. He won us a Super Bowl not too long ago….name was Strahan…some of us may have forgotten him during this dismal, underachieving season. Let Uminoyora go and it would be equal to letting Strahan go. Get over this season, bring in a D cooridinator that can pressure the QB and use the talent accordingly. Trade a guy like Osi and you will be playing with fire. We all know he didn’t get along with Sheridan.

by Jd94 on Dec 28, 2009 12:41 AM EST reply actions

GOOD FOR OSI...

Benching one of the top 5 DE’s in the game is ridiculous. Does anyone remember a couple years ago when Peppers had an awful year?? Did he get benched?? No. Letting go of Osi Umenyiora would haunt us for the rest of his career.

by sexyscottish on Dec 28, 2009 12:54 AM EST reply actions

Top 5?

If that’s what you think of Osi I’m not sure what you have been watching. He’s the third-best defensive end on his own team. I will say it again, and stand by it. He is no longer a great player.

by Ed Valentine on Dec 28, 2009 7:59 AM EST up reply actions

Can I say something about Mr. Umenyiora?

No one will come on here and say Osi’s had his best season, that’d be ridiculous to say. But Jesus Christ am i sick of the Osi bashing on this board. Sometimes its akin to the Shockey bashing, but I could at least understand that because he’s NOT a Giant anymore.

Osi has had a down year this year. Stinks against the run, and had a down year rushing the QB. But here’s why Osi should be a Giant next year. One, he’s always stunk against the run, so there’s no new news there. Not teaching an old dog new tricks. Two, in a year where he’s quote unquote stunk, he LEADS THE TEAM in sacks, AND LEADS THE LEAGUE IN FUMBLE RECOVERIES!!! now, for anyone to have a down year in there career and simultaenously lead there own team and the WHOLE league in 2 perspective categories, that is something worth reflecting on. and to any naysayers who frown upon his fumble recovery stat, saying its just luck and being in the right place at the right time, well guess what? They’re ready to build shrines in Baltimore for one Mr. Ed Reed for doing the same thing. Except for him they call it a ball hawk; for Osi it’s luck.

And, to further add to my argument, he’s not only in the right place at the right time; he’s second on the team in forced fumbles with 4, one behind what we mostly agree is the best D player on the team, Tuck.

Ed, guys, listen. Is Osi Strahan, Reggie White, or the like? no. but no one of us common folk know what it is to play the sport they do, and to do it off a recently surgeried knee. I’d like to believe that that knee had a hand in his down play. And yes Osi is upset; he has a right to be. he lost his job. if he took it in stride i’d have a problem with that. I heard last night he played 13 snaps in the first half, and 1 in the second. He had a right to be upset. Because with him not in there, guess what? Jonathan Stewart still ran for 200 yards. Is anyone killing Kiwi for that? no.

Osi has fire, and passion. The tongue lashing he gave his team on the sidelines a couple of weeks ago, that’s what i want from my players. That’s what this team needs. Vocal leaders. If that was LT, we would have loved it. That’s right LT, fire up them bastards! but its Osi, so instead we say, Osi, shut the hell up and stop the run. Unfair.

Is he cocky? Probably. some of the best players are. Jordan, LT, Pujols. It’s what drives these guys. that they think they’re the best. I don’t want anyone on my team thinking there second best, cause that’s howd they play.

Osi has had a down and frustrating season, he has a right to let out steam. Let’s not underwrite his value to the team is all i’m saying. and let’s not ship him out on the next thing smoking…

by wilddre22 on Dec 28, 2009 8:22 AM EST up reply actions

I actually agree with this

I love Osi, always have. I think he’s had a down year and he’s really been exposed in run coverage, but he’s still a talented football player coming off a knee injury. I’d hate to see the Giants get rid of him, b/c I think he still has flashes of greatness that he might be able to sustain the further from his injury he gets.

Osi is still young and extremely talented

It’s been said repeatedly that it can take about 18 months to recover from his type of injury fully, so that he was a step slower all year is easily understood enough. Rushing to get rid of him would be an awful mistake…and if you don’t get your full money’s worth on a trade involving him, it could be damaging for a long, long time.

Plus, c’mon…I have his jersey!

Get his ass out of here....

We gotta get Sheridan out of New York. Look at him on the the sidelines, he looks lost. The man is in over his head. I blame Sheridan. He has to go.

regroup replace and move on

Some very valid points…hmmm we lost yesterday when we had a holding call on that td , then the fumble…oh yeah the D was ok for a while but the O stunk…I think had we played better on O we would have won..
Keep Osi…Lose BS or move him to the booth…db’s should practice together…all the time S’s & CB’s that would solve some issues…I for 1 think we are an offensive lineman ,LB & DC away from once again being a champion caliber team.. Call me dumb

i dunno maybe I just like the colors

by Mr.Williams on Dec 28, 2009 7:26 AM EST via mobile reply actions

lately the DB problem hasn't between communication

it’s the fact that they are just bad players. They just cannot make plays

coming out of the tunnel

not sure if anyone else noticed but as the giants were coming out of the tunnel to start the game, osi was walking with his helmet in his hands and he lookd pissed off. I made a comment to my buddy that the “D” looked like they were coming out for practice. Its not easy to motivate grown men… and of course these guys are pros but they should be ready to play…the giants seem like they are too cool to get pumped up…not sure if that sounds the way i mean it to, but i haven’t seen that emotion that has been there in the past. I believe sheriden has to be let go… the guy is a dead fish…

coughlin

I know some will attack me for this but, tc has to take some blame as well. the giants were very predictible this year, play calling was too predictible…defensive schemes were readable….kicking game was putrid…. tom has to step in at times and make changes.

giants season

I blame the giants season soley on the coaching staff period .When Eli had the foot problem he should of been pulled and let Carr play until he was healthy thats coughins job as head coach period. They need to replace the coaching staff and now is the time to do it

Osi

seems to want to be a 3-4 OLB. They guy dosent play hard anymore. Mike Ditka made a good comment “when you wear QB shoulder pads, you start playing like a QB” meaning the guy dosent want to get hit.

I would love to see Osi get Shockey’ed, but until he is healthy its not going to happen.

The giants need to bring in some Vets like the Broncos do every year who will provide leadership and experience. Vocal guys who can teach the younger players. Raiders did it with Richard Seymour (not the best example, but a good guy)

Defense

I think the DT and LB issues have been brewing for about 5-6 years now. With multiple FA’s coming in and out it’s been a turnstile outside of Antonio Pierce.

What I see is that Canty and Boley are the only ones that I would really keep around. I would like to point out that I can tell Danny Clark and Blackburn really give 100% and I hope they find a good home.

Why are we in this spot. Well, we’ve drafted so many corners and WR’s in the past 4 years that I believe now we have to move on and focus on defense and OL (as they are aging and breaking down).

I think a big benefit we are all overlooking is how much Thomas at CB has grown this year. Yeah, he’s been beat but the guy has really gained some experience points and i believe will be a great contributor in the future.

Not to delay my comments on Osi but i think we need to put it in perspective. Most Achilles injuries take 2 years to heal and come back – how many players have we seen this with in multiple sports. i would keep him for another year unless someone is ready to put up a 2nd round pick or very high 3rd. At best we’ll get a 5th round pick for him.

Jacobs – I think they guy is a little gun shy. I see him hesitating at the moment of impact and turning his shoulder before the hit. He looks drastically smaller and needs to hit the gym but mentally I think he is afraid of collisions. I would find a way to move him even it it’s a low pick but his Salary is just too high.

Disappointing season and I’m really pissed off about not getting Beckum and our lanky 3rd round pick on the field. The guy had no experience this year and is basically a redshirt rookie coming in next year. YOU CAN’T DO THAT WITH A 3RD ROUND PICK! Dump him or integrate him into the team next year.

TC – stop playing only old timers over rookies that might make mistakes. They have to LEARN!!!

you would dump blackburn?

after admitting that he gives 100%? i might be biased, because i love chase…but its because he’s a monster on special teams, smart, and versatile. i’ve argued he should be starting..he’s not the most athletic but he makes up for it with passion and smart plays.
