Panthers 41, Giants 9: Embarrassing!
Completely embarrassed. That's what the New York Giants were this afternoon, and that's what I am right now as a fan.
That's it. That's all I've got for now. The pathetic display the Giants just put on is not worth more thought than that.

Re-tooling needed
It is not an over-reaction. Get over yourselves folks – this is a mediocre team.
The Giants start with D. Observations:
- Osi is a one dimensional player. He can be very effective but only if used well.
- Canty gets no push up the middle. None. He seems to be a DE.
- Bernard and Robbins should be cut. Thus, a problem at DT.
- Boley is OK, not great. Clark should not be costing Sintim playing time.
- Goff has potential but a plan B should be handy. AP is done.
- Giants have 3, maybe 4 starting quality DBs – Webster, Thomas, and Phillips. Maybe Aaron Ross (yes, Ross) and maybe Michael Johnson.
What’s good? Great set of DEs. Tuck, Kiwi, Osi and maybe Canty. Strong young core. Cofield, Webster, Phillips, Ross, Sintim and maybe M Johnson and Goff.
On offense.
- Manningham will continue to frustrate coaches. He is not starter caliber
- Giants have two good receivers – Hicks and Smith. Barden may make three.
- Jacobs seems to have lost his fire. Not sure why. AB and Ware are quality backs.
- The OL needs to be re-tooled. Sign a big time FA and adapt from there. Diehl can/should play guard. McKenzie is done. Seubert should be a super sub aka Whittle. Booth, Whimper, Koets – all marginal players.
What’s good? Manning. Strong OL potential. Good backs. Boss at TE. Emerging receivers in Hicks, Smith and Barden and there is still hope for Manningham.
The coaching staff?
- TC was on the ropes before he won a SB. He is a perfectly acceptable coach – just not a champion. Sheridan is in over his head. Cowher would bring pride, toughness and discipline to the NYG. Do it.
Then it is up to you to re-tool JR.
Not a champion?
He has a championship, so that makes him a champion. You are wasting time and energy calling for his firing, because it isn’t going to happen. Nor should it.
Lots of other changes, yes. That one, not even a discussion.
by Ed Valentine on Dec 27, 2009 4:08 PM EST up reply actions
we'll disagree on TC
He came into this season with talent and he let it fall apart
Yeah, there wer injuries and players have to play but the coiaches bear some responsibility.
So..you would take TC over Cowher?
It is a discussion Ed. Sorry.
Boom.
No Cowher.
Yes Coughlin.

I would take TC
Cowher also had disappointments in the playoffs save for one year, as well as a big let down year after they won the SB. He also doesn’t seem to be particularly motivated to get back into coaching, that would give me pause even if I thought TC should go, which I don’t.
My point is this
It is not happening. You know it. I know it. TC will be here for a while. You can disagree, but you will never get a post out of me opening it for debate. Because it is a waste of time. Let’s debate things that actually have a realistic chance of happening.

that I will agree with
unfortunately
Coughlin IS a class act and probably deserves some leeway but this last season and a half tells me he is not up to the task any longer
They both have the same number of super bowl titles
I dont get why Cowher is considered a genius when his division is shit, do we get the Browns and Bengals twice a year? The Steelers were just as lucky to get to that SuperBowl as we were to beat NE…remember Big Bens miracle tackle on the Indy DB?
Okay, just so I understand it... in your wildest fantasy, you are in hell. And you are co-running a bed and breakfast with the devil.
I'm not so sure
your right Ed, he did win a championship, but after today, we lack leadership at thje top, we come out in the second half running? we are huddling up in the 4th quarter?? To me that means the team quit, meaning he quit.

Thats on Gilbride
he calls the plays, you should know by now his decisions make little to no sense
Okay, just so I understand it... in your wildest fantasy, you are in hell. And you are co-running a bed and breakfast with the devil.
C'mon
They did no huddle for a while. At some point they knew it was pointless. Nothing the offense could have done would have made up for the crummy defense, so going after KG today is kind of silly.

I totally agree with you Ed............
TC is a champion and a very good coach. Certain fans are just left feeling desperate and are talking drastic. There are no better alternatives out there regardless of what people think. This loss falls squarely on the team not the coach. Execution, execution, execution…………..Giants had none of it today. What an embarassment. Everything on the line and you come out and lay an egg? Giants gotta regroup and we’ll see you in july. Too many holes on defense that need to be plugged. And the lines on both sides of the ball need attention……………..oh and new coordinators would help.

Danny Ware is not a quality back
He has done NOTHING this season…how can he be quality? I’d rather see Gatrell Johnson get touches then Ware.
Manningham has the athletic potential but he is the real life version of Forrest Gump
You got most of it right but Manningham has shown some sparks of greatness and some quality play. I believe the Giants bring in a good recieving coach they will be able to make Smith, Nicks, Manningham, and hopefully Barden in to the top Recievers in game because though out this season i have seen some great plays from them, but mixed in with a lot of Bad. I believe that Manningham will become a top wide reciever in the league in the next couple of years if the Giants just give him that chance. but the Defence i dont even want to talk about.!

Excellent analysis
I’m almost in 100 percent agreement.. TC’s not about to get fired. I didn’t think BS would either, but after today’s performance, it’s simply something that must get done.
Michael Johnson is terrible
doesn’t deserve to be a starter

How can one reasonable call Barden an "emerging receiver"...
…when he hasn’t played a single down in an NFL regular season game???
Like Alford, it seems that many here on BBV have a tendency to see Barden through blue-tinted glasses and judge him by the normative “what we wish he will be” rather than what he has demonstrated thus far.

Alford has been on the field and been effective.
Barden is more Andre Brown’ish.
No one has a clue other then the scouting report.

Alford's career thus far has been defined by a timely sack in the Super Bowl...
…beyond that, he has been serviceable in the snaps he has received, nothing more. Believe me, I want a stud DT to emerge for us as much as the next guy, but I won’t hold my breath for Alford.
by Step up and make big plays on Dec 27, 2009 9:42 PM EST up reply actions
no doubt..
I wouldn’t count on him either.
BUt he’s young and was getting better. Its like getting an extra draft pick with him coming back, yet he’s a bit more proven.
He was a bit more then that one sack tho. The guy could rush the passer.
His loss was a lot bigger then people think.

Looking at PFF from last year
Alford had a similar ratio of QB pressures to snaps as someone like Kevin Williams. You can’t ask for much more from a 3rd down DT.

- Osi needs shoulder pads that fit, because he looks like he is afraid to take a hit out there.
- Goff has been making plays since he has been out there, but the leadership AP brought needs to come from somewhere else
- No one knows anything about Barden yet. He could be a bust and the longer they wait to bring him up, the more I worry.
-Jacobs lost his fire when he got the big contract. End of story.
-A big time o line FA wont help. Good OLines play together for a long time. Its not like youre ever going to describe someone as an “impact right guard” We need to develop young guys and get them on the same page as the vets.
- Manning needs to be a leader. Not just a by example guy, but a fiery guy like Peyton. More ego/confidence. No more sulking off. Ive seen him in the tunnel after losses, anti social, introvert akin to ARod before Kate Hudson. I assure you Peyton does not need archie waiting outside the locker room at the end of every game to console his son like Eli does. (Peyton tried to pick a fight with Randy Coture at the superbowl in AZ, the guy has balls) I dont care if he is having a great statistical season, the only QB stat that matters is wins.
-TC is the right coach for this team. However, in the turnover, the players lost respect for the assistants. There is no motivation coming from them and no leaders on either side of the ball to endorse them for the other guys.
WORST SECONDARY IN THE NFL
I don’t care if STATISTICALLY we aren’t the worst….I AM SAYING WE ARE THE WORST. Any ball thrown up in the air has a 99% of being caught on this secondary. It hurt that KP went down early in the season but he is just one man. No one else can play CONSISTENTLY in our secondary.
I AM DISGUSTED WITH OUR DEFENSE…IT’S A FRIGGIN DISCRACE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Talent is there
The D can rebound in one year with a couple adjustments, new blood via the draft and a better DC
Players have to MAKE PLAYS!
I agree we need a new DC but it’s not going to make any difference if players don’t make plays. This Giants Defense doesn’t make plays against quality opponents. We win games against poor teams and get destroyed by good teams. the one exception is today where we lost to a dismal panthers team.

Giants - Cowgirls: The reality
We ONLY won the Cowgirl games because our offense outscored theirs and NOT because of our “stellar” defense. Even in those games, the Giants D was poor, giving up lots of yardage on the ground and in the air, not to mention the points. Don’t take my word for it – just check the game summaries!
Embarrassing doesn't cover it
We should be embarrassed that we have an entire website and blog dedicated to this team. I’ve been a lifelong Giants fan and have never witnessed a display of less emotion on a team that could have actually made it to the playoffs! Absolutely pathetic, offense, defense, special teams, coaches, doesn’t matter what part of the Giants “game” you select.
It certainly is,
but he won’t be going anywhere.
WTF?
This team is not embarrassed, you have to have some pride to be embarrassed.
Tom Coughlin, if Tyree doesn’t make a miracle catch he is gone after last year.
Bill Sheridan, a horrible hire, the linebackers have always been a problem & he was their coach. Osi knew he was the weak link when he walked out of camp.
There are too many holes & needs to address in one off-season. This could be another 20 years trip into the wilderness for the Giants.
Nothing Is Fool proof if you have the right fools.
Roster is managable
Holes? Yes, but nothing JR cannot overcome with a little luck.
Giants will be back in the top 5 teams in a year or two.
Sheridan
Sheridan needs to go he is a statue on the field. Seriously doesnt show any emotion and that what the Giants Defence needs Emotion good or bad. they Need someone on the Sideline that is willing to get in the face of the Players and Motivate them to win that what Spags did. I would want to see AP to come back as a Coach or something or a team Motativator or something like that made bring in Strahan to give some Speeches because that Giants team was Dead after they gave up 3 points!

Thats a bit of a stretch
Coughlin’s had the team in the playoffs every year, except this one, since Eli became the full time starter.
We just need some speed at LB and an entirely new secondary except for Webster.
I would also look at trading Umenyiora, he just doesnt seem the same and I dont recall if he was ever that good against the run anyway, Im sure Strahan made him look better than he really was.
Okay, just so I understand it... in your wildest fantasy, you are in hell. And you are co-running a bed and breakfast with the devil.
You don't think KP
will make it bacl> How about Ross?
Well Phillips doesnt really have a track record to make a call
on his ability, same with Ross, he’s been hurt a great deal lately. I certainly would keep both of them around.
I know we havent had a WR in the Pro Bowl since 1965, which should end this year, but when was the last time we had a DB make it?
I cant remember us ever having a lock down corner
Okay, just so I understand it... in your wildest fantasy, you are in hell. And you are co-running a bed and breakfast with the devil.
Webster is elite
Thomas, Phillips and Ross are better than average
The Johnsons? Dunno. Rousse is depth only. Brown and Dockery? Gone.
DL made the DBs look better in 2007
see I think Dockery does a good job
for what his role is, what else would you expect? We definitely need another safety, that much is evident
Okay, just so I understand it... in your wildest fantasy, you are in hell. And you are co-running a bed and breakfast with the devil.
our corners are not too bad
its just that with bill stupid’s terrible playcalling they are always in a bad position. our Safeties though are the worst unit in the league

Again with thhe blue-tinted glasses, re: Webster...
“elite”??? though this isn’t the best metric (though it’s a damn good proxy), how many pro bowls has he been selected to?
I’ll concede that webster has elite potential, but that is still far from being rightfully considered an elite CB in the NFL.

What to Do???
Sheridan is over his head and should be gone BUT….he didn’t miss tackles, fail to get past offensive linemen, blow coverages, etc. Defense needs a major housecleaning and offense needs line help and oh, one more thing……cut Manningham and his stupid red shoes. I could drop just as many passes – for a lot less money.
Does he really make that much?
I doubt it, he wasnt a first round pick, and you gotta keep him around for his speed and agility, he offers that more than the other WR. I dont think anyone is considering him the top guy, thats clearly Smith and then Nicks…manningham is the change of pace guy
Okay, just so I understand it... in your wildest fantasy, you are in hell. And you are co-running a bed and breakfast with the devil.
as a third receiver
manningham is pretty good. He’s made some mistakes but the fact is hes still getting open a good amount of time, for a 3rd receiver you cannot ask for more. he’s had more than 800 yards this year which is also very good for what is his essentially rookie season.
by mclaren_is_the_best on Dec 27, 2009 5:00 PM EST up reply actions
Ham doesn't deserve that....
The guy worked hard enough to be what he is…and that’s a damn good WR.
Hell..he’s worked himself into the player that if he makes a few plays…quite possibly, this is a better season.
I’d rather take chances with him getting better then worrying about trading for some POS like Braylon Edwards…
or hoping Ramses Barden is half as good in his first action next year.

You’re right but his coverage schemes blow. Dropping your best pass rushers into coverage? Allowing your corners to play Elite WR like steve smith soft, not jamming them at the line etc. He should never have taken over for spags. This is why Osi is so frustrated. He understands the defensive game plan is not working and he is rightfully upset. Defense needs to start game physical to set the tone not play soft to try and figure out what looks the offense is going to give you. Have to dictate the game not play catchup after its too late.
Can we stop with the zone blitzing bashing already?
i’d say 65-75% of teams in the league do it, we just act on here like BS invented it and it was his worst invention yet. I think it’s a good D changeup, and i actually think we have the horses to do it. and no one says anything when it’s successful, which it is more times than you think.
I feel like BS was watching ESPN in the offseason when all the analysts were gushing over the steelers zone blitzes so Sheridan, the clueless moron that he is, decides that since it’s worked so well for them then he should also use it whenever possible.
Except the difference is they don’t drop back their best pass rusher at every oppurtunity.
by mclaren_is_the_best on Dec 28, 2009 7:54 AM EST up reply actions
that i will agree with you on
Sheridan is utilizing it wrong.
you wanna do it, put Sintim on the line, rush him a few plays so the D doesn’t suspect anything, then drop him into coverage. he’s a natural backer, he’d be the best at it. i can even see osi doing it since he’s the fastest of the ends. if Dallas was effective at doing it with Canty, revisit some of there old tapes and see how he was most effective. but don’t just do it willy nilly. man i can’t wait to wave goodbye to Mr. Sheridan.
Spags did it...
it worked.

I was watching Superbowl 42 again on the Giant’s 10 greatest games.
And Spags had Osi dropping back and covering Welker. The results were not good.
I can’t tell you how many times Spags zone blitzed in the superbowl, but the one time I saw it, it was a first down.
Never assume skill at bouncing a ball makes you smarter than the guy who built the court.
When there's a WILL there's a WAY
Maybe the Saints will sell us their bags
Who saw this coming? Nobody… and that’s the point. The tackling was flag football. Just horrid play. Go take a bubble bath, Giants. And shame on Coughlin, Sheridan and Gilbride for doing absolutely nothing to bring the team out of their emotional funk during halftime. This D is so unlike the D led by Spags, with fire in its belly and just looking for a chance to lay the wood. This coaching staff works Xs and Os, but without a hint of leadership that inspires players to dig deep and get fired up. Aikman, Jimmy Johnson, even Strahan all but admitted this team is without a leader, and Jimmy was dead on at halftime when he concluded the last leader on this team left when Strahan retired two years ago. Everyone sees it. The coaches don’t lead, and the players don’t have an on field leader. So they sleep walk on the field, and every time the camera cuts to Coughlin he’s looks like a dog watching TV… absolutely puzzled and bewildered. JR has to find a D field general during the off season, because bringing back AP is just plain foolish. Leaders have to lead from a basis of legitimacy and that can only be done by setting an example of how the game’s to be played. If the Bucs don’t lock up Barrett Ruud with all that cap room, then JR ought to chase him down. I’m not even going to allow myself to entertain the thought that the Texans don’t close a deal with DeMeco Ryans, and besides the Giants aren’t paying that kind of money. But Ruud will lead the league in tackles and raise the play of everyone around him. On JR’s B list ought to be Karlos Dansby, DíQwell Jackson… C list is Sean Merriman, or anyone who has a Junior Seau motor and leadership quality.
aside from the playoffs
this is one of the worst losses the Giants have had in recent memory. but im not going to be as pessimistic as EVERYONE on this site seems to be. has everyone forgotten that this team won the super bowl two years ago and was the number one seed in the NFC last year? there are a lot of things that need to be fixed but what NFL roster doesn’t have that problem? injuries, drops, bad calls, you name it, the giants have faced it this year and at worst they’ll be 8-8. there are a bunch of teams out there that havent sniffed the .500 mark in years, so i think everyone needs to CHILL THE FUCK OUT.
by GiantsReignSupreme on Dec 27, 2009 4:32 PM EST reply actions
i think that's where the pessimism stems from
because we’ve seen what THIS BUNCH is capable of. that this basic core of players had champion before there name for the past 2 years. And now, we get to watch teams routinely drop 30 on us. Blowouts become commonplace. And no one knows why. We can all speculate on why, but no one knows.
that’s why we’re pessimistic.
Injuries are killng them
OL done, can’t lose 2 starters and be able to run or protect. Antonio Pierce & Cory Webster out leaves gapping holes in the defence. I still think Eli has mobility issues stemming from the heel injury.
I hate watching them play this way. Time to start looking for next year, get a pro-bowl reciever a huge DT, CB, and let the injuries heal and we are good for next year.
we have a pro bowl receiver
his name is steve smith.
by GiantsReignSupreme on Dec 27, 2009 4:33 PM EST up reply actions
Hopefully
All bad things aside, Eli is on the verge of a 30TD 4,000 yard season, or at least close in both categories, so its not a rebuild by any means.
McKenzie seems to be on his last legs while Beatty seems like he might be up to the task….its primarily the defense that is hurting us.
Both lines, the secondary and jacobs really seemed to have a down year
Okay, just so I understand it... in your wildest fantasy, you are in hell. And you are co-running a bed and breakfast with the devil.
The game has passed Coughlin by
This team looks ready for a long decline, much like the wilderness the once great 49ers have wandered into the past decade. Best would be to launch a thorough re-building right away, starting with the “retirement” of Coughlin who looks clueless on the sidelines and has not gotten his team ready to play week after week. If either coordinator makes it back, it will be sheer cronyism and denial.
There are some lingering fantasies that need to be overcome as well, for example the idea that lumbering Brandon Jacobs is a premier running back. Glaring weakness in the linemen on both sides of the ball are obvious as well (and not only to a handful of people in Carolina who had it all figured out).
I look forward to some good draft picks that should get this team ready in four or five years. Go Giants!
You might as well trade Eli, Smith, Tuck etc
if thats your point of view, why waste five years of their peaks then?
Okay, just so I understand it... in your wildest fantasy, you are in hell. And you are co-running a bed and breakfast with the devil.

totally different
9ers years in the wilderness were caused primarily by salary cap issues. Debartolo and Policy went win now, and back loaded a bunch of contracts with big bonuses. They had to cut a bunch of players and were so behind that it was questionable whether they could even field a full team.
Add in an ownership in turmoil, and you have a team in the wilderness.
The Giants are no where near that falling apart. There are some gaps and some needs, but there are also a lot of good players.

To those who say TC should go:
Don’t hold your breath. Yes, this is a team with a need for not only new blood, but a new philosophy. Still, TC isn’t going anywhere, nor should he if we play the comparison game. Cowher, while good, looks better in memory than he did in reality. And Parcell’s would have been 86’d after the 88 season, two non-play off years in a row, losing to the Jets in the final minutes of a must win, division clinching, or see ya and go home game, if we want to be consistent. So, TC, even after his debacle, gives him only one losing season as a Giants coach. Four play off years and a super bowl. He gets a shot at 2010. Though I’ve sensed a morose resignation on his part for months now. As if he knew his team just wasn’t all that good for quite some time. That said, things beside the players have to change. What those things are? I don’t have the answers, and if I, or anyone on this blog did have said answers, who the hell knows if they’d actually produce results.
Fact is, this team could be on the start of a long slide, a decline, it happens. We flirted with elite status, touched it, held it, gave it back and suddenly woke up as frogs. How?
No Strahan. Seriously. He’s a big factor, emotionally as well as physically. He made Osi and Tuck better players than they actually are. There is no leader on this team. A one season pick up, some free agent, it’s too much to ask a leader to come from there, it takes time, a leader needs to feel and have an emotional stake in a team that goes beyond his pay-cheque. Eli is a hell of a QB, but he isn’t the fire this team desperately needs. Retooling and success, or long slide into basementville for a regurgitation of the wilderness years. Hmmmmmm. Something to ponder, though only time will tell.
Agree and Disagree a bit
Agree about Coahing. Good comparison to Parcells, they blew it up after 88 and if you look at the 90 team there were very few of the same starters as the 86 team so I agree TC and JR deserve a shot at another run. They drafted very well between 86 and 90 and rebuilt a lot of key parts of the team, O-line, D-line, Secondary, skill positon, D-Line.
About leadership, Strahan a great Leader? People are remembering that cannon of heros parade and that America’s game video little too much. Seriously I’ve heard this a lot this year Strahan was not a great nor even a good leader he was a well liked and respected vetern and a great player with an enormaous ego but not a leader. This was the same guy who sat out training camp in 07 because well he did not want to go and threatend to retire if JR did not pay him more becasue he felt the team was not going to be any good. This is the same guy who winned about TC before Tiki and Shockey ever did and said he’ll never play more than one year for him. This was the same guy that openly complained about his contract throughout his playing days with the Giants. This was the same guy who in that horrible playoff loss to SF could not even generate a pressure on Garcia and spend most of the second half trash talking to TO and sucking wind as the 49ers completed one of the greatest comebacks in playoff history. This was a guy that was so concered with an idivdual sack record during an awful 01 season that he worked a deal with Brett Favre so he could get the “record.” This was the guy that was the “leader” of another horrible playoff loss to the Vikings in 97 in which his defense started fist fighting with each other on the field durring that meltdown. Until 07 Strahan was considered a great player but not the type of “leader” LT or Carson were and he was’nt. Armstead was the leader of those John Fox’s D’s and AP has been since he arrived in 05. Justin Tuck never had a D-Tackle nearly as good as Keith Hamilton playing next to him. I’m not saying this to rip Strahan I love the guy and he’s a great Giant who’s presence as a player has been sorley missed but I think we need some perspective on what the guy was and to say Tuck will never be that kind of player or was only good becasue of Strahan is being harsh. If you compare the first 5 years of Tuck and Strahan’s carreer they are similar. Strahan did not break out until his 5th year while with Tuck it was his third. Tuck has a SB ring with an MVP type of performance in that game while Strahan did not even have a playoff win thorugh 5 years. Tuck sturggled in his 5th (this year) but a lot had to do with a serious injury that he played through and never complained about. Tuck was an all pro in 08 without Strahan and Osi. I’m defending Tuck becasue a.) I beilive he is a great player and will be the face of this D for years to come and b.) I was too hard on Strahan for most of carreer for not being more like LT or Carson and I was wrong for that and I don’t think Giant fans should do that with Tuck either, he’s the least of this organizations problems. Also a FA can come in a be a leader right away AP did it in 05 when he came in as a FA.
They will not regress to wilderness years, it’s almost impossible now-a-days. Sure they might stink here and there but it’s tough to sustain greatness or suckiness for an extendted period of time. As quicly has the Giants have fallen off they can come back equallay as quickly. They have a quality QB which will keep them competative in a mediorce league. A little re-tooling in a mediore league goes a long way. The Saints D last year was just as miserable as the Giants D is this year all they had were a couple of underachieving pass rushers kinda like this years Giants, they get a new D-corrdinator and an aging vetern saftey and they go form 32nd to 15th if the Giants can make that sort of improvement next year they will win 10 games next year.

Ugly, Uglier, Ugliest
Some of these comments, such as the team has talent and the coaches are unbelievable. Did they watch today’s game? It was worse, as hard as it is to believe, than the loss against the Eagles.
With the exception of the QB and TE, the breakdowns have been EVERYWHERE this season. Secondary, special teams, DL, OL (yes G*d Damn It – Manning has had far too little protection), uneven receivers and running backs.
The proposition that the coaches bear no responsibility for this embarrassment to the NFL and Giant History is ludicrous. Its like saying the general isn’t to blame for an army’s defeat.
TC is probably not going anywhere this season, but he’ll be entering next season with a huge question mark over his head, because Are Giants Toast has a valid point: Based on the offense and defense calling we’ve seen this year, the NFL might indeed have passed him by.
The bottom line here is this: Giants were overrated, but even worse, what talent and ability they did have was never effectively utilized. Despite its win-loss record, the numerous blow-outs and the lack of NFL caliber defense, made this one of the worst seasons in Giants history.
Not even close to the worst.
I have been watching the Giants since the late 60’s, this isn’t even in the realm of one of their worst seasons, it’s that we have been spoiled as of late. It has been a very disappointing season, no doubt about it, but not even close to the worst, and I think if we can get a new, descent DC, we could be right in the mix next year, draft a LB, a OL, maybe a safety, get some depth and find a DT somewhere, anywhere, we will be ok, offensivley I think we will be fine, Eli has matured into a top flight QB, and the receivers will be one of the better units in the league for some time to come as they gain experience.

Talking to my dad during games a ways ago, he reminded me that the Giants used to STINK. when i was a kid, whenever the giants lost, and i would start sulking, he would tell me the same thing every time: “Its tough to be a Giants fan” Then he showed me a tape of “Miracle in the Meadowlands”. I never doubted him again.

The sad thing was that we dominated the 1st half of the 1st qtr...
…that drive, right up until Hedgecock’s holding call, was very methodical, as Eli hit on everything and the guys moved the chains. It was an absolute killer to come away from that drive without any points. You cannot turn the ball over in the NFL and expect to win.
Had we gone down and scored 7 right away, the game may have taken a different course…hindsight is always 20/20, though.

Don't forget..
we didn’t get any help whatsoever from that ridiculous officiating crew today. All game long they cheated us and no matter how the game is going, we couldn’t overcome the BS flags or non calls.
Aside from that, other than Eli and the WR’s I wasn’t happy with the way anyone played today. Eli Manning proved again he’s in the elite group of 2nd tier QB’s with Rodgers, Rivers, Schaub, etc. Hopefully he can spoil the Vikings chances at homefield advantage next week.
you know how i know there werent any BS flags?
we are the carolina panthers, nobody outside of the carolinas likes us. You’re the freaking NEW YORK giants the largest media market in the WORLD. I believe that if anyone was to get the calls it was you guys, but thank god it was an excellent officiating game.

Aw that is a big bunch of B.S.
I lived in Raleigh for 13 years and rooted for John Fox, when he wasn’t playing my Giants..Your full of shit…
really...
really wasn’t.
I don;t think it would’ve affected the outcome all that much..cuz the Giants D couldn’t tackle anyone, specifically Stewart.
But there was more then a few calls..like PI on the Panthers.
They really weren’t PI..but they were called against the Giants, so consistency is a must, and it was sure as hell not consistent for both sides.
Also..there was a facemask on Bradshaw that was very obvious…yet, nothing.

Last game as a Giant?
From Ralph…
Lots of emotion in the post-game locker room, but no one seemed more upset than DE Osi Umenyiora, who complained about his lack of playing time and said this was not only his last game in Giants Stadium, but "probably as a Giant."
He said his lack of playing time was "an unbelievable situation" and that the way things have gone for him this season has been "complete nonsense." He added "the way everything else unfolded it was really unbelievable. It is what it is. We live and we learn."
Then he abruptly ended the session by saying "I can’t answer any more questions. I’ll probably say something that will get me really messed up."
Wow.
Well….those that blame the coaches…didn’t watch too much of this one. When you tackle like the Giants did……Bill Belichek in the late 80;s wouldn’t win with a tackling effort like today.
They were rolling right along like last week…until they blew a tire with the Manningham fumble.
I don’t usually complain about the refs….but there was some obvious stuff not called for the Giants..and some real..real questionable stuff the other way.
But this is what happens when its not your year.
Overall…Coughlin stays…
Sheridan goes, tho…I can’t think its all him. It might not even be 50% him. You can’t tackle like these guys did and blame it on the coordinator.
Oh well…bad Sunday gets worse as the Jets win..the Eagles pull one out.
Giants are in the coffin…still ain’t over, but we’re counting on the Redskins to hold the nail out the coffin.

Sheridan has been dealt a bad hand
from injuries, to aging vets, to flat our poor performances but you can’t get rid of the entire D so Sheridan will be the fall guy.
and whats alarming about this D is how it never improved as the season went on it seems to have had “communication” problems all year.
A lot of these guys will be back and a lot of them did not play well or even regressed under Sheridan. (Michael Johnson and Kiwi come to mind) So if a lot of these guys will be back next year it’s hard to have confidence that BS can get a lot out of them, there has been no improvement all year long.
Having our best pass rusher drop back into pass coverage
thats all on Sheridan
-Predictable Defensive schemes
thats all on Sheridan
-Cannot stop anybody in the redzone
thats all on Sheridan
-Going from the 4th best defense last year to the 5th worst defense this year
it can’t be only injuries – look at the panthers = top 4 DT’s on their depth chart are on IR, pro bowl LB on IR, a crap ton of interceptions by Delhomme and their defense is still 10x better than what we’ve had this year

I would like to be fair with Sheridan...but
tackling & preparation should be emphasized during practices well enough that it becomes second nature to the players come game day. I know they are professionals who have been doing it most of their lives, but it still needs to have some attention emphasized during the supposed week long preparation prior the games, and that is on Sheridan. And yes, there will be a few missed tackles during game day, but if everyone is missing, I’m sorry – BS does get most of the blame, lack of prepartion and motivation by HIS defensive players. He may be a smart guy, but he needs to be more than just smart to be an effective DC.
Opus smart , lascivio magis , intereo gauisus...
Wow.......
After being at that embarrassment of a game that the Giants put on today I have to say that the season is totally done. Our defense has more holes than the Titanic. The only true quality players are Webster, Ross, Philips, Kiwanuka, and MAYBE Tuck. Everyone else needs to get the hell out of here. Sheridan is a dead man standing on the sidelines clueless as to what is going on. The whole thing should just be gutted right now. As for the rest of the team, sitting in the stands today the only person I noticed with any real emotion was Blackburn. A truly disappointing sendoff for Giants Stadium
titanic had only one hole.
and it was a relatively slim gash.
by EarthWindFire on Dec 29, 2009 11:04 AM EST up reply actions
Bad as the D looked,
the idea that we need 7-8 new first team D players seems overwrought to me. MAYBE Tuck? He’s a great player, who soldiered on with a severe injury for most of the year. Tomorrow you might not feel as pessimistic. Watching the debacle in person had to be tough. I’m glad I wasn’t there.
There's a lot that needs to go tho...
No, its not 7-8 starters.
But there’s 7-8, probably more, that need to go.
Robbins, Clark, Michael Johnson (damn has he regressed..), CC, Rouse, Ross (talented…too many injuries and the act is tired), Pierce.
That’s 7 right there.
The play of the D will cost Sheridan his job. But the tackling I’ve seen of this D, and the blown assignments, just cannot be all on him.
There needs to be a lot of new blood.
Reese has obviously not seen this on his watch as the GM.
The work they do this offseason and going into next year, will be where he really proves what he’s worth.
But there needs to be a lot of turnover here.

agree about most of the above. No answers for Johnson playing awful this year. And how many times can we wait for Ross to heal from hammy pulls. I bet his significant other doesn’t pull them – track stars know to stretch properly
LOL...freaking agree!
was Toomer the only one that did that when he was on the team?
Opus smart , lascivio magis , intereo gauisus...
Toomer, the only one?
Frankly, I didn’t even know T practiced it. That could very well explain his long, fairly injury free career.
I remember
seeing it on either MSG or SNY’s weekly Giant show. I think it was either half an hour or an hour long. The specific episode probably aired in 2003 or something and they showed Toomer stretching and doing yoga – taking a class in mid-town, I think. Pretty funny stuff at the time, but then again, that stuff seems to really work.
Opus smart , lascivio magis , intereo gauisus...
Citing specifics makes it sound more reasonable
Lots ov BBVers think Robbins is done. I’d like to give him one more camp to see if his knee improves. Ross deserves one more training camp as well and an intensive Physical Therapy for his hammy. I have no argument re the rest you cite.
its just...
while I like Robbins…Ross too, I just don’t want them here.
Ross is too frustrating, he’s only been here 3 seasons, so yea, he probably gets another camp. But I’d be too worried about ANOTHER injury to give him too big a role without a backup option.
Ross has always been in and out of the lineup. He was always the guy walking back to the locker room before half.
Yea, he should probably stay cuz he really is talented, so able bodies need to be kept.
Robbins’ deal is done. There needs to be an infusion of talent. His demotion pretty much sealed that he’s gone.

Robbins was our recipient of that Courage Award this year...
…so he must be doing something that other players and the organization respects.
He has blocked like 3-4 extra points this year, too…probably because some players have a tendency to take that play off and simply go through the motions. It’s a shame that he hasn’t been able to get that kind of push off in defending the run.
by Step up and make big plays on Dec 27, 2009 10:13 PM EST up reply actions
Robbins is a FA at the end of the year
and is 32. I think it’s assumed he won’t be resigned to a long term deal and I doubt he’d settle for a one year deal for less money which is really the only way the Giants would keep him. So I’m sure he’ll sign elsewhere for more money and years and the Giants need to bring a younger more impactful player in at the D-Tackle position.
You always
come up with an angle/insight that works for me, L.
Not sure what to say
One thing I don’t want is to start from step 1 with a new DC, but what else is there, right? That could take a year or 2 to build the correct chemistry. Also don’t want a new OC as it could take longer to GEL with Manning (may not have a choice in this matter). I love our group of YOUNG receivers and I think theres no way to go but UP!! Jacobs needs to show some reckless abandon for the love of. If at all possible lets get healthy and give this group another try. GUYS/GIRLS were not that far removed from our last SUPER, SUPER BOWL WIN!! REMEMBER…. One sorts World Champion for NY for 2009 is not leaving me feel very empty right now! OK TC, lets see some Barden and a lot more of Beckum. And START Ware next week, please. Jacobs needs to seriously find himself.
Ware has to be made active, first...
Something tells me that he has been in TC’s doghouse since that fumble on his first series back after the elbow injury.

Let's look on the bright side...
Eli looked good this year. WR was not a big problem, just need to avoid those drops. Boss and Bradshaw played well. The young guys have talent. I have faith we can be better.
Jacobs needs to go now.
Now that they probably are a passing team, they need to get rid of the power back who doesn’t fit an aerial attack.
Jacobs was really the reason they got away from the running that was so successful last year, whatever the problem was..it was a problem.
Bradshaw needs to have a bigger role. Hopefully this Andre Brown dude is OK going forward, he’s bigger then any RB not named Jacobs on the team, also..he’s supposedly pretty damn fast too.

It's sad
but makes sense.
You know what sucks? If we had Barber in his prime right now, he’d be 10 times better than before in our pass first offense. He’d be like Westbrook. Try to have some deep plays, but than if there’s nothing, dump it off to the RB and let him work their magic.
A running back that could catch would be great. A fullback that could catch would be even better. Can we sign Leonard Weaver next year?
Never assume skill at bouncing a ball makes you smarter than the guy who built the court.
When there's a WILL there's a WAY
I'm sure glad I missed this game...
I’ve been out of the country but have been following my beloved Giants…
I agree with a lot of what has been said on here today..primarily:
1. TC stays – he does need to tighten the reigns on his assistants and get back a little of that bad TC from pre 2007…just a bit…but after today maybe 75% of it back.
2. Sheridan has to go, never liked his schemes, or preparation or play calling. Sometimes it worked, but mostly against sub-par teams that were worse in preparation, personnel, etc. then the Gints.
3. A couple of plugs to fill all over the place. And a lot of unknowns with non active players, subpar play, and b/c of the injuries sustained by the whole team. Oline needs a couple of tweaks and they will be ok, a nice quality high draft pick (anywhere from 1st rd to 3rd rd) for an Oline next year. We need a DT (FA), maybe another fast LB (FA or Draft), and 1 really crazy ballhawk playmaker Safety (Draft if there are any, haven’t looked).
4. I want to give up on Jacobs already, it seems like he hasn’t shown that much fire anymore since he got his big contract) and vice versa with Killdrive not running him 20-30 times a game. I’m not sure on Killdrive either…on the fence still with him, just can’t get a grasp on his play calling…simply mind-boggling at times.
I don’t think the Giants are a terrible team, but just a mid-tier team THIS season, regardless of why (injuries, subpar play, bad coaching <preparation, play calling>)…they can be capable of getting back up to the top tier, but the focus remains on their DEFENSE…
Opus smart , lascivio magis , intereo gauisus...

Hope
I was profoundly dissapointed in the giants this week. They had the chance and they BLEW it.
New Years resolutions
1. Bill Sheridan needs to go – his play calling is terrible, miscomunications all around. During the 5-0 start, he was pitted against OK teams, but when he starts playing against GOOD teams, he fails.
2. Revamp the secondary- GIVE US WEBSTER BACK!,
3. D line could use some help too. when the D line fails, the secondary stops doing ddamage. FREE AGENTS FREE AGENTS FREE AGENTS
good players become leaders, so giants d+good NEW d players= d playing well
4.Jacobs needs to suit up. his subpar preformances throughout the year really killed the running game. obviously the injury of Bradshaw and ware going got the running game out of sync, but 1 yard in a game is inexusable. start training for football instead of practicing for ameteur boxing matches (and he was lucky he wasnt ejected for that punch he threw an Haynesworth)
overall, all the aspects that make the giants the giants; good Dfence, running game, have all been in the dumps this year.
