Aaron Ross hurt again

And the hits just keep on coming for the New York Giants. This from Ralph Vacchiano.

Aaron Ross has already missed nine games this season because of a left hamstring he’ injured three times.

Now he’s injured it again.

That bad news was delivered by Tom Coughlin a little while ago, when he acknowledged that Ross hurt that same hamstring sometime yesterday. Though the exact timeline isn’t clear, Coughlin did say the injury was discovered after yesterday’s practice.

Ross is "day to day" and his status for The Giants game in Washington on Monday night is unclear. According to several players, Kevin Dockery and Terrell Thomas were the first-team corners in practice today. Rookie Bruce Johnson was practicing as the nickel corner

Paging R.W. McQuarters. Or Sam Madison. Or Jason Sehorn. Anybody who can stand up straight. Help!!!!!!

Defensive backs

The honorary captains at the Eagle game were RW McQuarters, Sam Madison and Amani Toomer. I thought to myself: What are RW and Sam doing? They can’t be worse than the D-backs we have this year.

Is it the players? The coaching? The D-line? What a mess the defense is. And all the fans get so keyed up for them. Every time I stand up for a third down, it goes for nought. I’m sitting down on third down for the whammy.

we don't need "12 percent" back

RW McQuarters earned that nickname in north jersey for notoriously leaving only 12% as a tip at bars and restaurants.

Giants make plans and God busts a gut.

This is simply one of those years, heaps of bad shoveled onto piles of awful. The football Gods had it in for us from the get-go: Free-agent sure-things transformed into toads.
Dosi Umenyora (sic) secretly stealing his more talented cousin’s identity. Antonio Pierce’s foot getting stuck on the age accelerator pedal. Bill Sheridan wishing he could drop someone with the speed and dexterity of the Chrysler building into coverage. Jeff Feagle’s wishing he could travel back to an era he’s more comfortable with: the dark ages. Lawrence Tynes being, well… Lawrence Tynes. The O-Line playing as if they were getting all of their nutrients from big gulps and 99cent taquitos from 7/11. Brandon Jacobs having a bigger mouth than shelf-life (or schvonze, if my dear, dear stripper friend Craven McFeetrub is correct). And then, of course, Kenny Phillips getting hurt.
Justin Tuck putting his wounded shoulder to good use lip-synching opera with Jared and Stray. Bradshaw auditioning for the gimp in the Pulp Fiction sequel (heroically, I might add). Yes, we were f’d before the season began. Now, lets beat the Redskins and keep Flozell f’n Adams, the nose picker, ooops I crapped my pants Phillips, and Tony (no, really, it’s not my fault, and if it was, f you, I got blown by Jessica Simpson) Romo out of the f’n playoffs!

… Webster is iffy for Monday as well? OK, maybe ooops I crapped my pants Phillips will make playoffs…

Yep..Ross is hurt and Web is iffy at best..As if we needed any more bad news..

But I’m not giving up..our D-line is way overdue to step up and make big plays…When you have a hole somebody has to fill it..and we’ll need that come Monday..and I don’t like the fact that Shanahan is negotiating with Snyder and Co….that sends a serious motivational message to a team who hasn’t played all that bad in recent weeks..
I’ve never ever brought a copy of the Sunday NY Times into a bathroom stall with me and read every page..front to back…I might this Sunday..On Wednesday, I’ll come out to see what happened.

Biltz

I think Sheridan has no choice but to “blitz all night long.” Just go all out pressure 6, 7, 8 guys if he has to and just try to wreak havoc the best he can.

by Ed Valentine on Dec 18, 2009 4:41 PM EST reply actions

i completely agree.

our secondary wont hold up for more than 5 seconds a play, so we need to get pressure on their Q every play.

dline is overdue for a big game

LET'S GO RANGERS!!!

This would be

a good time for Canty to step forward and earn his check. Play man and pin their ears back, and, as one poster on this site likes to say, “Step up and make a play”.

by Jolly on Dec 18, 2009 5:00 PM EST reply actions

Plain and simple

we just need to score 40 points and pray we only give up 39, so like I said in an earlier post, rush 7-8 guys at the QB and when he hits on a 70yd TD atleast hit him in the mouth.

by BigBlueCrew_jfl on Dec 18, 2009 5:01 PM EST reply actions

What about Ross's future

He’ll wind up missing 12 games. Will the hammie heal well enough for him to have the kind of productive career expected, or will we be faced with filling another hole in the D?

by blue gonz on Dec 18, 2009 6:18 PM EST reply actions

Well..George..You raise a very good point here..

Normally, the amount of time a guy spends healing from a Hamstring pull is light years less than Ross and Canty have suffered..the question is why?..Something chronic?..and KP..will he recover?..Leaves alot of major league issues to consider and figure out in the offseason…but the team needs to deal with the here and now, I guess.

by Bobbiblue on Dec 18, 2009 7:10 PM EST reply actions

That is a good question.

I think a lot of DBs, but Ross in particular, train like sprinters. And for whatever reason, it makes them really susceptible to the hammy injury.

I left my swagger in my other pants.

DB's

Isn’t it funny that when TY Law, and Mike McKenzie were sitting out there as free agents earlier in the year, we could not use them!

by 56Giant56 on Dec 18, 2009 7:48 PM EST reply actions

There were some good FAs

available. We were definitely thin. JRr took a chance and it didn’t work out. It’s tough to prepare for the plethora of injuries we’ve had this year. It might have been worse in the pre-TC days, like the year we went into the playoffs with three LBs who weren’t even in training camp.

by blue gonz on Dec 18, 2009 7:58 PM EST up reply actions

we still can't....

McKenzie aside from that miraculous Patriots vs. Saints game…has been decent

Ty Law stinks.

Also…both play Corner…Webster and Thomas…probably just as good. They aren’t being used right (as in…bump n run, coverage).

I know injuries are inevitable,

but I think it would help if yoga is incorporated in a training program. Athletes in other sports have done so and kept injuries to a minimum (e.g., Kareem). Some footballers just seem too cut. Stray had a relatively injury-free career, but he had long smooth musculature. I think he must have taken it easy on the weights. Think of boxers. The guys who are really cut aren’t ever the best punchers (Ken Norton, Boom-Boom Mancini.) You have to be limber to throw a hard punch (Joe Louis, Rocky Marciano.) I know sprinters are cut and DBs and HBs train for speed, but still…worth a try? I wonder about those RBs who last way longer than the 4yr. average (Sweetness, Sanders, etc.)
Tiki lasted a long time. He had a highly specialized training program. I wonder if it incorporated stretching?

by blue gonz on Dec 18, 2009 7:54 PM EST reply actions

lol, the whole yoga thing cracks me up

im not criticizing your idea or anything. it’s just the mental image of football players doing…yoga

by suzie-q on Dec 18, 2009 8:10 PM EST up reply actions

I hear you, Suzie.

Probably cracks them up as well, not to mention coaches and strength trainers. Still…

by blue gonz on Dec 18, 2009 8:14 PM EST up reply actions

LOL!!..George you always have a preponderence to make me ponder..

Rocky M. didn’t require the yogi-bogi stuff..He just got really pissed when somebody hit him in the face..Boom-boom, well that moniker speaks for itself, Norton?..probably could have used a little yogi stuff..but all fun aside, I think you raise a good point..These players need to have stretching exercises increased and Yoga may very well help them…

by Bobbiblue on Dec 18, 2009 8:13 PM EST up reply actions

Tiki's program was a power lifting program

ran by some “strongest man in the world” meathead type in North Jersey.

I belive it helped Tiki avoid injury but I also think the fact that he was compat at 5"10" 210 LBs and a cutback runner that was low to the ground and avoided a lot of contact helped him stay healthy imensley. BJ is a bruiser who’s legs are always exposed becasue of his hieght and Bradshaw, though a quick cutback type guy does take a lot of head on shots.

You want to avoid injuries. Put size and weight limits on these guys. Thats the only way they can reduce injuries and we all know that won’t happen.

by Landeta on Dec 18, 2009 9:18 PM EST up reply actions

that required all the major muscle systems be incorporated

in each exercsize, like deadlifting a duffel bag full of rocks, shouldering it, then sprinting with it. I’ve been harping about yoga for football players for years now. A guy at the gym I go to is a pro rugby player (Charlotte) a Samoan and he swears by it. He’s thirty seven and still going strong and never had a serious injury. His wife is an exec with Cat, so he lives in Peoria in the off season.

Not letting you off the hook

FreeB with your answer on our DB’s. I know what position they play. I also know that moving from CB to Safety is easier than going the other way. I also know that CC Brown should have been cut in training camp, and Aaron Ross should have been on IR a long time ago. He took up a roster spot all yr for nothing. We should have signed McKenzie or Law . Corey Webster has looked real good these last 6 wks. I do agree our schemes are terrible and you can thank BS for that. Our defense was awful before Spags and great for the 2 yrs. he was here, and now it is awful again,! What a coincidense!

by 56Giant56 on Dec 18, 2009 8:41 PM EST reply actions

They were pretty bad for Spags's

last four games. He got out of town just in time. We wouldn’t have been near as bad this year with him. I doubt even with him we would have been much better than average.

by blue gonz on Dec 18, 2009 9:50 PM EST up reply actions

You know Blue people keep saying that but I'm not so sure

Yes they stunk against Carolina late last year but they did stop Carolina in key spots late in the game and it OT, the G-men were forced to punt after recieving the kickoff and were able to get the ball back so the D may have bad overall but they made some key stops which has been non-existant last year.

The 2 philly games and the Dallas game they were fine I thought, not overwhelming but not bad at all. The O kept going 3 and out and they were kicking FG’s when the moved the ball. In the reg season loss to Philly they scored one TD on SPecial Teams and the other in garbage time. Against Dallas Eli was sacked about 8 times and Hixon could not get any seperation from Newman. I will give you that they started to give up big plays on D late last year, in the Dallas loss they let up a big pass to Creyton for a TD and a big TD run for Choice, Westbrook also ran wild in the regular season loss and Adrian Peterson had a 60 yard TD run.

But in the playoff loss to Philly they played pretty good D. They stuffed Westbrook, they picked off McNabb twice and forced a saftey. Remeber Philly’s first TD in that game was set up by a pick by Asante that was returned to the one. They really only gave up 16 points in that game and if Gillbride had decided to run the ball on 1st and 5 from the Philly 25 with 2 mins left in the half maybe they run some clock before they score and don’t leave Philly anytime to drive late in the 1st half. They played good enough to win that playoff game Eli and the O did not get the job done.
