In defense of Sheridan...
first off, i think the offensive play by the Giants should be realized as a positive. 38 points against the Eagles is quite a feat. however, as we all know, the all-mighty giants defense that has been the base of our team for the past couple of years needs to step it up.
along with this, to me, sheridan isn't the main problem. (of course he has something to do with it...) is sheridan the one putting on the pads and playing. i don't think so! you can only do so much from the sideline. i think it is time to stop worrying about sheridan and have the players themselves step up. what are your thoughts????
dont forget...a dallas loss to the Saints (which is very likely) and we beat the 'skins...we're in the playoffs and will control our destiny to stay there

I can't defend him anymore
I’ve tried. Even if he shuts out the next 3 teams, who’s he facing?
The redskins, albeit they’ve been better lately scoring, carolina, and the JV vikings.
I don’t know what to say…
I hope he figures it out, but I’ve been saying that for what, 13 games now?
Never assume skill at bouncing a ball makes you smarter than the guy who built the court.
"Osi is probably one of our worst db's but he did alright there"
I've tried to look at positives.
But….another 30 points on the D yesterday…its just too much.
Sheridan is not the sole problem, no, but he’s a big part. What the hell it really is, I don’t know.
The only thing you can defend is the Giants are still breathing. They need Dallas to continue to piss their season away, and they have plenty to drink so that helps.
So…while the D obviously just shows no real signs of stopping a great offense like Philly…the Giants aren’t dead show Sheridan and the D can still…I dunno, just do something.

Sheridan needs to go.
There is too much that has gone awry for us not to let BS go.
True, the players play. And the coaches coach. Somewhere, though, something has been lost in the translation from teacher to student.
The line gets no push and we get no pressure. The marquis players are comfortable with simply hugging the offensive linemen, with an occasional spin thrown in.
Canty was invisible as were many others.
We didn't even have a chance for the "perfect season", but we did have the perfect ending.
Canty is worse because
not only is he a non-entity on the line, but he’s taking a huge amount of cap space and his contract and shitty play will definitely have guys like Tuck and Kiwanuka looking to make more than Canty… I think if he doesn’t do a lot in the offseason and make himself a presence on the line next year they have to try to dump him at any cost just so his contract isn’t a cancer on the line’s mentality

There's no defending him.
His blitzes never get to the QB, and there are always receivers wide open in the secondary.
Injuries aren’t his fault, but the 2007 secondary was a makeshift unit too and Spags found a way to pressure QBs.

Michael Strahan,
Kawika Mitchell, James Butler, GIbril Wilson, RW McQuarters as the nickel CB, younger and healthier Pierce, Osi and Robbins.
These guys all were veterans and knew the defense. We had 2 LB’s in Pierce and Mitchell who pretty much were 2 MLB’s and Defensive Coordinators on the field
Spags had the talent and the health. He had the veteran precense.
Sheridan…while I say he will take the fall and pretty much deservedly so, the D has to show SOMTHING with the talent on the roster.
But he doesn’t have the veteran precence (Michael Boley was the guy with the Green Dot Sunday…), he doesn’t have the health, guys have gotten old fast, guys are coming back off major offseason surgery.
…and we don’t have Michael Strahan.
So yea, fire him and deservedly so. But there’s a reason why Spagnuolo was ‘so good’ and Sheridan is ‘so bad’.
Spags was no great defensive schemer. All the stupidity that we see Sheridan do? DE/DT’s in coverage? Spags did that too. Playing short zones with 8 men in the box? Spags did that too.
It IS the same gameplan, like Sheridan said he’d do.
The PLAYERS is what’s wrong here. No pass rush…cuz the guys who were that for Spags, either aren’t here or are a shell of themselves.

I agree about Mitchell...
…they miss him a lot. He was a great blitzer.
Still, this unit is too talented to be 28th in the league. That falls at the feet of the coordinator.
by New York Sports Jerk on Dec 15, 2009 11:20 AM EST up reply actions
I agree.
He’s gonna take the fall (of course..barring the miraculous)
And I haven no problem at all with it.
The problem of who replaces him..and who else goes with him, is gonna be tough. Cuz I really feel this is more of a talent and experience issue, not to mention guys playing less than 100% health (or at least more hurt than usually is acceptable at this point in the year)

I don't know every defense in the league
but my general sense, and the preseaso buzz, seemed to indicate that the Giants’ defensive personnel has got to be considered at WORST mid-pack… say 16th in the league. Therefore, to me if they are ranked under 16, they have a good DC. If they are ranked worse, they have a bad DC. If they are ranked TERRIBLE…

Spags was no great Schemer?
Of all those we miss Strahan is the guy. He was the guy that was going to get to the qb eventually. Unlike Osi he got there half the time with a bull rush, take the OT with me on the way there approach. Thats why you couldn’t run at him.
If you think Spags would have Justin Tuck in coverage on Antonio Gates time and time again when the zone blitz wasn’t working I highly doubt that. If you look back there were several games where the successful defensive scheme wasn’t blitz heavy with Spags.
by BravesfaninMontana on Dec 18, 2009 2:42 PM EST up reply actions
Spags DID have DE's in coverage.
Tuck. Osi. Kiwi.
Yup.
Spags didn’t have to blitz cuz he had Michael Strahan on the line…not Tuck who is a shell of himself right now, Osi ditto, and Kiwi showing up every couple games.

WTF?
Watching San Francisco shut down Arizona last night was proof of what a well devised scheme can do. Sheridan is lost, completely lost. This defense looks slower then congress. Tuck & Osi had their pictures on my milk carton this morning, they have been no-shows. This team has no heart, dropped passes, missed blocks, arm tackles, they are going through the motions.
Nothing Is Fool proof if you have the right fools.
I think he
needs to go but I was thinking that where do you we find a replacement?? Does it come in house? We see how well that worked this season.
To reiterate, with the talent that is on the defensive side of the ball they should be playing much better than they are and that is a player issue. The coaches prepare they players for everything they may face on Sunday but it is up to the players to go out and execute and that is where it has fallen short. Some one has to take the fall and it sure wont be all the defensive players…
Sheridan probably stays
I don’t think he always had the best schemes, but our defense just can’t seem to stop anybody. Even in obvious situations… Amazing to me how bad the red zone defense has been. These short-yardage/goal line situations that we fail on can’t really be blamed on Sheridan.
Our guys need to stand strong and play tougher, meaner, more physical “Giants defense” (like it used to be). I watched Osi and Canty not get near the QB, with a single guy blocking each of them for over 6 seconds. Jared Allen (or Strahan) would have been double-teamed, but still would have gotten at least some pressure if not a sack.
After TiVoing the game...
here’s some more defense of Sheridan.
The big Desean Jackson play…more of a result of Mike Johnson biting up in coverage. I dunno how Mike Johnson’s incompetence…which has been evident this year…should be faulted at Sheridan. Maybe he’s in his ear too much? I dunno
The Giants got stops on third down. To me…enough stops that it should’ve contained the Eagles.
The other big fault on defense was teh Boley fumble play. Osi got his sack/FF play…Boley dropped it (yea..in his palms…). No one picks teh ball up, when if they did…that’s a turnover people. The Eagles marched right down for a TD after that (30-17)
Goff INT…then the Eli Manning fumble. Is this Sheridan’s fault?
Boss dropped pass in the RZ…stupid 3rd down play….Eagles march right down…is this Sheridan’s fault?
Jacobs fumble returned for a TD…is this Sheridan’s fault?
DJAX Punt return for a TD…is this Sheridan’s fault?
…Yes the defense is not “elite”. They are more mediocre than atrocious tho.
Certain things like the offense not being able to capitalize when the Eagles couldn’t stop the Giants (Eagles D was a lot worse than the Giants’ Sunday night…)…this is more the reason for the loss.

at the very least...
the Giants should’ve been able to keep pace with the Eagles.
In fact…Fred Robbins blocked EP…very well could’ve been the difference????!!!!

The points you make are there, Sheridan can’t do much about that. His impending ouster is not just based on the last Philly game. It’s a consistent body of work of teams lighting up the scoreboard on us. I
said after the Saints game that Johnson was just as much to blame as CC Brown. What’s happened since then? More of the same. At some point the Def. coaching staff has to rip a guy a new one or sit him down to get him straightened out. Each week it’s just more of the same, more of the same.
It is....
I agree, his total body of work is building up; a big pile of crap.
ITs just….I mean, I had to go and look at that Desean Jackson deep bomb again….you know what Michael Johnson did?
He bit, and quadruple covered ALEX SMITH. Not Celek. ALEX SMITH.
I dunno man….I’m not in practice with these guys, but I’m pretty sure they’ve gotten on Johnson for stuff like this. Rouse too for the other deep pass to Jackson.
Its just….who do we sit them for?
We already made a CB into a safety, who else is there? We already benced CC Brown, and I ain’t throwing him in there…..
I know Sheridan’s gotta go, if the next 3 games continue this, or even if merely there is a crap-storm in a playoff loss, he’s gotta go.
I mean, its just the incompetence of 2 safeties, Johnson and Brown. The others, Ross is learning a new position (and damn near swatted that ball…) and Rouse, well, he’s more of a strong safety, one who plays in the box, so that he’s getting beat in deep coverage…more of a him playing when he shouldn’t.
Johnson does a lot of stupid stuff. I see him fly in to tackle a RB on the ground already, damn near was a late hit. CC Brown gets called for a personal foul on a punt return to push the Giants farther into their own zone.
These 2 are fools.
Sheridan’s gonna go down more for the incompetence of certain players…not cuz he’s incompetent.

BILL IS A VERY GOOD DC
WOULD EVERYONE PLEASE GET OFF BILL SHERIDAN’S CASE HE IS MAKING GREAT CALLS FOR THE MOST PART BUT WHEN THE PLAYERS DNT PLAY TO THEIR INTELLIGENCE AND ABILITY IT DOESNT MATTER WHO THE DC IS. BILL WAS ACTUALLY SPAGUNOLO’S FIRST CHOICE TO BE THE RAMS DC BUT TC SHUT THAT DOWN…….AS FOR THE PHILLY GAME A COVER 2 WOULDVE STOPPED JACKSON FROM THAT BIG PLAY BUT WHEN MICHAEL JOHNSON WHO IS NOT PLAYING LIKE HE DID LAST YEAR COMES OUT OF HIS ZONE TO BITE ON A BACK UP TE, HOW IS THAT SHERIDANS FAULT. I THINK THESE PLAYER OWE HIM AN APOLOGY BECAUSE THEY ARE MAKING HIM LOOK FOOLISH HE IS ONE OF THE BETTER MINDS IN FOOTBALL AND I HOPE HE IS THE DC FOR YRS TO COME…..HE DOESNT MAKE THE RIGHT CALL ALL THE TIME BUT THIS IS HIS FIRST YR BUT LAST I CHECKED MOST OF THE PLAYERS STARING ON DEFENSE ARE NFL VETS AND THEY SHOULD BE ASHAMED.
NOT TO MENTION EVERYONE COMPLAINS ABOUT LINEMEN DROPPING INTO COVERAGE GO BACK TO THE GREENBAY GAME IN 07 OSI WAS ALWAYS IN COVERAGE AND KIWI PLAYED LB FOR A YR SO HE IS NO STANGER TO COVERAGE ITS JUST THAT THERE IS NO INTENSITY AND YOU ARE A NO GOOD FAN IF U BLAME THE DC INSTEAD OF THE EFFORT FROM THE PLAYERS………….THE DC JOB IS OVER ONCE THE BALL SNAPS AFTER THAT THE GUYS IN JERSEYS HAVE TO DO SOMETHING
B.G.
thank you
Mrs. Sheridan

Bill Sheridan
Its all Bill’s fault..He is the person in charge of all the defenders..telling them what to do..he’s ultimately at fault..
In dallas, he had a good scheme..pressured romo..with different looks..so what changed from the cowboys game to eagles game..pretty simple..he sucks..very inconsistent..Why would you change a game plan when it has worked..thats the problem..
How many times did we blitz against Dallas vs Philly..
I’ll bet we blitz alot less in Philly..you cannot win if you do not get pressure against the QB..
Bill!! Trust your players..and they will have trust in you…
Giants Defense.
I just don’t understand. Bill Sheridan inherits a potential No.1 defense, and screws everything up! Now I know he doesn’t actually play, but it’s his job to put players in positions to succeed. Or talk to Coach Coughlin, and Jerry Reese to make upgrades in our secondary via the free agent pool. I kind of thought something was wrong when OSi left practice in the off season. Here’s a little advice from a fan. Go back to the scheme Steve Spagnolo brought to the defense, and bring glory back to big blue. I also believe Tuck should leave the commercials alone, and he and OSi need to get pressure on the Qb’s to help our depleted secondary.

He is using the same scheme as Spags.
the front 4 has taken a dump..for whatever reason. And its not cuz Tuck’s in commercials…its cuz he has a torn shoulder.
