In case you missed it, Phil McConkey was great

Below is a link to a video I just watched at Youtube.com that appear to be produced by NFL films. I am no blue gonz or bobbiblue, but I have been a Giants fan for about 25 years. This video speaks to the team that originally won me as a fan, the great 1986 team. And more specifically, the player that inspired half of my Big Blue view handle, the inimitable Phil McConkey.

I bring this up (and try to use as many extra words as possibel in order to make this a viable fan post) in response to a comment in the idiot Peter King story about all-90s no Strahan. Someone made the comment that Phil McConkey was another nameless, less-than-noteworthy bum among the crowd Phil Simms threw to.

I say nay nay.

Star-divide

Please enlighten yourselves, especially Giants fans who really started up in time for the 1990 team, by watching this video:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P0AOs1My1Vk

It includes commentary by Bill Parcells and Phil Simms, some great footage, and McConkey's heroic play in Superbowl ... oh, shoot... XX?

Enjoy.

a bit of text as well:

McConkey is best remembered for his performance in Super Bowl XXI after the Giants’ 1986 season, which they won 39-20 over the Denver Broncos. In the game, his 25-yard punt return set up a New York field goal. Then on the Giants next drive, his 44-yard reception on a flea flicker play set gave New York a first down on Denver’s one-yard line, setting up a touchdown on the next play. In the fourth quarter, McConkey caught a six-yard touchdown reception after the pass bounced off the fingertips of tight end Mark Bavaro. (I always thought it was off the helmet!) Overall, McConkey contributed 50 receiving yards, 25 punt return yards, and one touchdown in the Giants victory. He also caught a 28-yard touchdown pass in New York’s divisional playoff win over the San Francisco 49ers a few weeks earlier.

While running off the field during the celebration following the victory in Super Bowl XXI, McConkey spotted a handgun on the field. He picked up the weapon and returned it to a police officer who was unaware it was missing. The officer had lost the weapon while struggling with a fan who had jumped onto the field.

You play to win the game!

Flea Flicker?

Let’s see one of those on sunday

That is hilarious

I don’t really remember McConkey. Great video. First thing, he looked like Magnum PI or the guy off ‘My Name is Earl’, awesome mullet. But the funniest thing was at the end of the video when he picked up a gun off the pitch! He handled it like a real pro. What sort of person would drop their gun on the field after a game … Plax wasn’t there was he? Maybe McConkey went on to run the gun safety classes that AP must have attended.

He was like a god walking amongst mere mortals. He had a voice that could make a wolverine purr and suits so fine they made Sinatra look like a hobo.

Crazy Helicopter Pilot?

Hello all, I’ve been a gmen fan for over 30 years and just joined the site, looking forward to learning from you guys! Anyway I seem to remember hearing McConkey was a helicopter pilot and definitely remember him running onto the field waving a towel like a madman – classic!!!!

Let there be no mistaking..

McConkey was a tough son-of-a-gun..He was the receiver version of Rocky Blier..Dependable and relentless grit…Actually, the entire passing game came together that year..and You have to give credit to Parcells..He opened up the passing game in SB XXI..That plan completely stifled Denver..They got the shock treatment and couldn’t react..We literally took their defensive schemes away from them..It was brilliant..and of course we had the Big Blue Wrecking crew for a defense..Alot of us waited 21 years for that day..and our team finally broke through the sound barrier and have been a team to be reckoned with ever since…My philosophy on this game is that you have to have the type of players that bring a lunch-pail to work with them, not a meal-ticket..That is why I never was too impressed with Barber, nor Shockey..Players like that screw up team chemistry..I’ll take a Kevin Boss, a Brandon Jacobs, an Aaron Bradshaw over any prima donna player..Look at AB..this guy is hobbling around all week and still performs and contributes on game day..Our entire O-line that we have been moaning about are workhorses, and our defense is starting to look like a Giants defense..I really don’t have alot to complain about when I compare today with 1962 thru 1985..There is no comparison from a talent and success standpoint..This has been a good era for Giants fans..and to have a “handle”: Simms-McConkey is an honor..I am actually a bit jealous (I had to choose something stupid like bobbieblue, for cryin out loud)

My grandfather has the same opinion about players as you

He hated shockey, and didn’t like plax too much (and he doesn’t like eli, but that’s a story for a different day).

He talks about the giants in the 80’s with reverence, and he loves Bavaro.

Heck, drag 7 players for 20 yards, I’m surprised its not on youtube.

Yes that Bavaro catch is an all-time classic..

..And if you have access to the ‘86 highlight tape/DVD..You see them pan-off to Parcells hollering to his staff: "Did you see that?!?..That guy is crazy!!..I wouldn’t want to mess with that SOB..He’s crazy!!"

Classic

that was a classic Parcell’s moment.

Plax

wasn’t too bad. I disliked Shockey in his later years with the Giants.

by FrankB0318 on Dec 13, 2009 6:52 PM EST up reply actions

Plax, Tiki, and Shockey were huge pain in the asses..

..and I am glad they are gone..I have a special disgust for Shockey after he hit that poor little boy in the face with ice..He is an idiot..I can’t stand him..He still is an asshole…I’ll take a guy like KB anyday over that moron..
