From Ralph Vacchiano:

Antonio Pierce doesn’t believe his Giants career is over.

Speaking for the first time since being placed on injured reserve yesterday, the Giants’ defensive captain told Sirius NFL Radio today that he expects to return in 2010.

"I don’t see why I wouldn’t be there," Pierce said "This was a season that got cut short by injury that shocked all of us — management, coaches and players. With everything I gave New York the past five years, I feel I’ll be here."

My take: This decision has nothing to do with what AP wants. I think he has played his last down as a Giant.

He believes the Giants owe him.

It could get ugly. The days when the Giants had that kind of loyalty are long gone. It started when the Commish forced the Maras to end their feud by having half ownership sold to the Tisches. Now, matbe if Well was still alive…? But even if, I doubt it.

I believe he has, too, Ed...

…and if not, than we are in serious trouble.

by Jonathan. on Dec 1, 2009 7:55 PM EST reply actions

he can think what he wants...

its OK for him to think that too. I don’t think he’s gonna get $4 million, so anything he can do to stay in good graces, he should do.

But they really need to move on. If this season continues this way, cutting Pierce should just be a formality.

Goff needs to get a shot at least.

If he can’t show anything, this year is a perfect time to be looking for a new MLB as there could be a few very good ones on the open market

I think his Giant days are over also, but I still love the guy. We’ll always have this

I've been watching this with my morning coffee every day since you posted it.

Its the nature of the business to cast aside a player who is clearly not what he once was…but its still pretty sad that people get so happy over him being shot.

Dude was the heart and soul of that D. Always Strahan is the first one out of people’s mouth…but no, it was Antonio Pierce.

Maybe he could become a linebackers coach.

by wkh19 on Dec 1, 2009 8:12 PM EST reply actions

This

Even on IR, he’s helping out Goff and Blackburn at the position by teaching them and lighting a fire under them, while most players on IR tend to avoid the practices. If his biggest asset is his knowledge and charisma, I can see him becoming a Linebackers coach someday. But unfortunately not next year. He has too much pride to take that kind of pay cut, I imagine.

Thank you for your time here in NY

But I’m afraid your time in the NFL is over.

AP should be proud of himself for having been an undrafted FA and to have
been regarded as the QB on the defense of a SB winning team .

Take a bow; exit stage left, quietly!!

Does AP have 1 more year on his contract?

if so, i’d bring him back…but i wouldn’t start him.

it’s going to be a big blow to his ego, but take it or leave it AP. He can still be our leader on D…just like Sam Madison was for our secondary 2 years ago.

It's tough to pay a guy 4 Million a year

if he’s not starting nor will he start in the future.

by Landeta on Dec 1, 2009 11:19 PM EST up reply actions

it may be invaluable for a guy like Goff...

if he’s given the reins someone’s gonna have to work with this kid.

still a lot of money though.

Thats why they could cut AP

and bring in a second tier FA MLB that was very good but is past their prime. A guy that has expierence and leadership skills and pay him a lot less. Kinda what they did by cutting Kerry Collins in brining in Kurt Warner to mentor Eli. Not sure if someone like that will be available but it could be an option.

I say we promote him

to Defensive Coordinator.

Kidding… Sort of.

Blackburn's been there for the last few games

They’ll probably give Jonathan Goff a few snaps a game too

good question...

chase is not an option.

Goff is…. but he’s going to have to get a lot of work these next 5 games. If he doesn’t…don’t count on it.

FA may be the answer here.

since were talking next year

Art Jones out of Syracuse he is a DT stuck on a bad team for his college career. I would love to see us draft him he is a beast. I know this because I’m from the Cuse. So you guys know as bad as they were Syracuse was ranked 9th in the nation against the run this year. Just some food for thought.

by Ando81 on Dec 1, 2009 11:36 PM EST reply actions

Yes.

Arthur Jones would be a great pick for the Giants.

"It ain't over till its over"---

by FreeBradshaw on Dec 1, 2009 11:43 PM EST up reply actions

Yeah, Id rather draft a DT than MLB because he can help against the run as well as the pass while LB’s aren’t very important on passing downs.

by mclaren_is_the_best on Dec 2, 2009 12:53 AM EST up reply actions

Good point

but I think because they need guys at both positions you draft whoever is the highest rated player on the board at the time, DT or LB. THats how the Giants have done it in the past.

by Landeta on Dec 2, 2009 7:36 AM EST up reply actions

Dan Williams from Tennessee

Wouldn’t be a bad pickup either. He’s quick for a DT and he’s rising very quickly, and you know how Jerry Reese loves players from Southern schools.

by xMattex on Dec 2, 2009 11:29 AM EST up reply actions

I think he's gonna be a big riser at the draft.

a lot like Justin Harrel a few years ago. Hopefully Williams isn’t a bust tho.

I’ve seen him as early as the 3rd round right now.

But he’s a large pile of fat who if he shows strength and runs under a 5.1 40….he could go possibly round one.

by FreeBradshaw on Dec 2, 2009 2:30 PM EST up reply actions

agree 100%

they need a DT first.

Maybe the biggest reason AP wasn’t playing well…is cuz the big guys in front of him weren’t doing their jobs and the interior OL were getting to their secondary blocks easy?

Yea, a great MLB should shed blocks…but even Ray Lewis said himself that he’d never be who he is if he didn’t have 700+lbs of Sam Adams and Goose in front of him..as well as 360lbs of Haloti Ngata in front of him now.

Giants need to get some GIANTS for the middle of the d-line. Canty was supposed to be that..and even if he is, playing in a 4-3 they need 2.

Athletes and their stubborn pride...

…AP should take a big step back and examine his career through the broader perspective of his life. In this league, 10 years of mileage out of an undrafted free agent is a tremendous run! He has been blessed to make it this far, but he needs to realize when it is time to go.

by Step up and make big plays on Dec 2, 2009 7:53 AM EST reply actions

AP was great in 2007 ...

But the Not-For-Long league has caught up with him. Sadly, a liability on the field since then.

Not going to miss his off the field antics – premature new contract demands, the whole Plax fiasco, twitter BS.

Really, he was gone in 2010 before the disc thing. He and his agent will probably read the tea leaves and claim to not be healed next spring, so they can get an injury settlement instead of just cut.

by Shofner85 on Dec 2, 2009 8:01 AM EST reply actions

Burying AP

Can we at least find a replacement for AP before we throw him away, I realize AP is slowing down, but lets face the facts our linebackers are not all that great and the fact is even as an older player AP is still our best linebacker! AP’s greatest assest is his knowledge of the game and as long as he is under contract for next season I see no reason not to bring him back. I am not opposed to bringing in someone to comepete with AP for the position, but that player should have to beat AP out for the spot.

by Late for Dinner on Dec 2, 2009 11:02 AM EST up reply actions

Blackburn is sufficient enough compared to AP

At the very least, he is good for a few solid plays per game, shooting the gap and producing tackles for losses. I can’t recall the last time I saw AP do anything positive on the field.

It seems like the Giants are in a predicament with AP

We all know he’s done good things here, so you want to treat the situation with a sense of respect. On the other hand, we all know his skills are deteriorating too, not to mention his health that may affect his career. But, it appears that AP isn’t ready to walk into the sunset and call it a career.

So what do the Giants do?
-Retain him at 4mil and pretend his skills are still good enough to start
-Ask him to re-structure his contract to save some money (which he presumably will turn down) as he now seems like an injury risk
-Ask him to stick around at a reduced price with a limited role

This may be easier if he was in the last year of his contract, but he does have one more year left. I’m only looking at this from the hit that may occur if they were to release him. With saying that, i think teams get some relief for veteran cuts in June, which IMO, is too late for his potential replacement. Who may that be?
-Blackburn seems adequate to solid in the short term, but not the future. Given the Giants are still alive for the playoffs, they’re playing it safe and going with him
-Goff, essentially a rookie with being out last year, where does he get the neccessary playing time to find out if he may be the future. A game or two cannot determine this
-The MLB FA market will be over if the Giants wanted to sign someone, but didn’t have the room for it, thus AP’s unknown status
-The draft, which ties in after FA has started, and assuming Blackburn has been starting and Goff still playing at the same rate, what to do here

Assuming AP’s value on the open market, i really wouldn’t see too much interest given his injury and skills. Though he says he still wants to play, perhaps he should reconsider it. So i was thinking that the Giants could offer him a positional spot within the staff? Something along the lines of an assistant to the DC. AP does seem to have a quality about him that maybe he can/could coach one day.

But, it still doesn’t help us in the hunt for our unknown future for the MLB?!?!
