AP on IR

The Newark Star Ledger just reported that the Giants have placed Antonio Pierce on season ending IR and I saw it on the NFL network just now.  Now the question is who are they going to pick up to fill his spot on the roster?  Who is out there?  Do they pick up another MLB or go for another position in need?  Also, is this the last we see Antonio Pierce in a Giants uni?

Who they pick up

really is of no consequence. You are into the final few weeks of the season, and there are no players out there who will make a real impact on anybody’s roster this season. It’s just roster filler at this point. The real question is whether AP is done as a Giant.

by Ed Valentine on Nov 30, 2009 6:31 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

My guess is yes.

For as much as he added as a “field general”, it seems his recent diminished skills really overshadowed his value on the field.

Although, Chase has been average he’s been no worse than AP. This forces TC to play Goff and Sintim.

When AP was first injured I asked the same question. Assuming he’s in decent shape Brooks has to be better than anyone the Giants march out on the field at linebacker.

We pretty much know what we are going to get with Blackburn

good and bad. I’ve been waiting to see if Goff can give us anything yet during the run of play, hopefully we get a chance to see this (and hopefully when we do it means the season isn’t already over). I see them just picking up a special teams body, they are going to spend scratch on someone with five games to go.

i hate saying it...but this could be a blessing in disguise.

obviously i wish the best for AP and hope it’s not career ending, but let’s be honest…AP is on his way out…Chase was never really on his “way in”.

Let’s get Goff off the bench and see what this kid can do. I’m sick and tired of the giants coddeling these guys. We hear all the talk about Sintim and Goff and when it comes time to play they’re on the bench.

I’m not saying Goff or Sintim is the answer….the problem is bigger than that! But we MUST evaluate what we have moving forward because I would seriously hate to see 9 LB’s on this roster next year.

Danny Clark is gone after this year….get him off the field! I dont’ care if Sintim gets beat in pass coverage 15 times this weekend….let him learn so he can get better. Same with Goff.

Sadly i’ll sacrifice this season if we could just find out what we have with Sintim/Goff/Kehl at Linebacker. I mean how do you go into a draft when you have no clue what you need?

Goff is nothing more than a ST guy

Coughlin watched him play through all of training camp / practices….He knows that Goff is not a serviceable starter in the league

by mclaren_is_the_best on Nov 30, 2009 9:36 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

he's a 2nd year player...

who is essentially a rookie cuz he missed all of last year. They don’t really have a clue yet what they have.

ST players turn into starters all the time.

Think what you want of Pierce and Blackburn, they know the defense much better than Goff.

He should at least see some time.

"It ain't over till its over"---

by FreeBradshaw on Nov 30, 2009 9:38 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

by mclaren_is_the_best on Nov 30, 2009 10:31 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

again...

I doubt it.

You got a veteran in Pierce and essentially a Pierce clone/veteran in the Giants org. in Blackburn.

Do they think the same of Sintim? They still play Danny Clark a lot.

They don’t know if he’s not good enough cuz he isn’t playing MLB in games. He was the 3rd string MLB anyway…now he’s the second string.

"It ain't over till its over"---

by FreeBradshaw on Nov 30, 2009 10:35 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

And why was Goff the 3rd string MLB? Because he wasn’t any good in training camp / OTA’s

by mclaren_is_the_best on Nov 30, 2009 11:20 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

because Pierce is their defensive captain

and Chase Blackburn has been around foreve.

Goff is also essentially a rookie.

They’d be killing the locker room if they made some 2nd year player ahead of those 2 in training camp.

If he doesn’t play a down of MLB this entire season, you may be right.

Not sure decison has been made on Goff

Think there is still some thought he might turn in to something. But you will never know unless you play him.

If he gets no PT in 2009 then either the coaching staff has its head in the sand or I would have to concede mclaren is right and they never saw him as a FT MLB.

Goff

Too soon to say “bust”. Webster and Tuck were drafted in 2005 but showed nothing until 2007 (third year). It takes time to learn the job.
However, I would like to see him get some time at MLB so Reese will have more info for the next draft.
The real bust at LB is DeOssie. I notice that he is never mentioned re any LB position, no matter what the problems are.

agree with this

I love AP for his field smarts but you can’t realistically see him filling that position next year after the huge decline in his effectiveness this year long before he was injured. You either see him getting blown off the ball or trying to cover a tight end or receiver and drawing a penalty. It just looks like he’s lost that edge.

I’d consider having him as a coach as another blessing in disguise. I could see that. Hopefully his playing days aren’t over yet though, even if/when he ends up with another team.

Barden....

get this man on the field…if Hagan has to sit than so be it. But please, if your going to activate the big fella, don’t activate him and only put him at ST, get him into the game and throw him the ball.

I watched Eli overthrow Smith last week when Dawkins hit him in the back and couldn’t help but think….Barden makes that catch….like the catch Plax made in GB when Harris leveled him. Smith doesn’t even get a hand on that ball…but Plax hauls it in. You look at the catches B. Marshall made w/ Webster all over him and I honestly can’t think of an active giants WR who can make those plays….

just b/c WR has not been a weakness this year does not mean we should be complacent. against tough secondaries this offense has problems….and if KG refuses to strech the field (like he did in Den) we’re going to have the same problems we did at the end of ‘08. Teams are stacking the box and over powering our Oline. Get a legitamate body for Eli to throw to! No offense Smith, Manningham, or Nicks. But we don’t have Brees and Peyton under center!!!

by andiamo708 on Nov 30, 2009 9:15 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

Barden should not see the field.

WHY?

First off, he’s not catching that ball with Smith…cuz chances are he’s not running a route as good as Smtih.

Also…the WR are not the problem. Getting another young WR who Eli has no game experience with? Yea, that’s gonna help. He’s been getting better with them when he has time, so why would you throw another one in there?

If Barden was a veteran O-Lineman who knows how to pass block and would kick Jacobs in the balls the next time he cuts a run to the sideline, then OK.

Eli has had plenty of “legitimate bodies” to throw to all season. Its keeping Eli off his back, giving him time..and providing a running game that the defense has to respect…that’s the problem, not WR.

i know the WR's are not the problem...

they’ve been a bright spot this year.

but when i see balls getting thrown behind Manningham or over Smith head…or guys like Hixon who have trouble playing the ball against a DBs, i can’t help but wonder if someone else can’t make those plays. We’ve heard it before, guys gotta go up for the ball and make a play on it. just like our DB’s gotta do.

our WR’s are good, but non existent in the redzone w/ the exception of Smith.

The best part about having a guy like Barden on the field is that he doesn’t have to run the best routes, he doesn’t have to be steve smith because he’s practically a foot taller than him. And another thing, we can complain about Eli not getting the ball to Manningham outta his breaks quick enough….get used to it. That goes back to my Brees/Peyton comment. That’s Eli he’s going to do that. We surely will not have to worry about that with Barden because he’s not the tazmanian devil out there.

Maybe it’s because i watched Barden in training camp and watch him literally abuse our DB’s and make circus catches look routine. IDK. But we’re not scoring in the red zone and while our WR’s are good they’re like Rodney Dangerfield…they get no respect. Teams man up and stack the box and our Running Game has been MIA since Plax went down w/ the exception of CAR.

What better

than playing the young guys to get some experience and lose some more games to improve the draft position as well!

Yes I want us to win out – but apart from a few possessions against San Deigo the D has not slowed anyone down since the Oakland game and that feels so long ago as to be a different season.

If we lose to Dallas the young guys get 4 games to play and earn a starting spot for next season – if they fail to take the opportunity then we need to look at other options for 2010.

I agree that Barden can come in as the 4th WR ahead of Moss and Hagan – he may not catch any passes but he gets a chance to run routes, avoid the jam at the LOS etc.

by FreeBradshaw on Dec 1, 2009 3:41 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

To All Those Demeco Fans:

First – AP is done. Goff will get his chance, and from what i have seen he is too clumsy in the open field to be a good MLB. Blackburn is solid all around, and is worth resigning due to his flexibility playing all three LB spots.

Barret Rudd will be resigned. Raheem Morris loves the kid, and they have the money for him. My bet is Kirk Morrison remains a Raider – they know how good he is. As for Thomas Howard, i would love to see that kid line up with a blue jersey on, but it might be to late to have him play in the middle.

Should have never let Torbor go – but i think Sintim will be given the opportunity to play SLB next season.

Now the options for MLB – draft, there are a lot of good linebackers in this pool – obviously spikes, Daryl Washington from TCU, Pat Angerer from Ohio that can jump in and make an impact. Just look at James Laurinaitis.

Demeco Ryans – I think he looks to get out of Houston. I hope the Giants do not get sucked into signing him. He is regressed every year since his rookie year and has gotten old quickly. He can still take on blockers better than any LB in this league but he doesn’t put in that effort to get off the block and rack up the tackle numbers.

I think Steven Tulloch might be the steal of the MLB pool. He has been taught by a great line backer in keith Bulluck (always thought it was funny that tulloch and bulluck lined up next to each other).

Something i think that could really help our defense is a true Strong Safety. Moving Kenny Phillips to Free Safety (at 6-2 215 he is one of the smallest SS in the league & played free safety at USC) and getting a Taylor Mays at strong safety would give us the deep plugs that we have lacked all season.,

by bigtrueblue on Dec 2, 2009 1:26 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

I don't watch college football but

From everywhere that I have heard they are saying that Taylor Mays is a sure fire bust / workout warrior. Even if that is not 100% true he doesn’t sound like the type of player that should wear a Giants uni.

by mclaren_is_the_best on Dec 2, 2009 2:17 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Good to hear on Ryans.

I know I heard about him being defensive ROY, but really, nothing much after that.

Tulloch is an interesting name, he’s really an underrated sort, actually seems like a Antonio Pierce type, young AP tho.

As for Taylor Mays, I’ve been thinking that his situation resembles that of Brian Urlacher a lot. He’s just too damn big to play S, so maybe should he slide to the Giants, maybe they have intentions to move him to MLB?

Also,I don’t know where your going with Kenny Phillips size. He’s just as big as any safety in the league, at 6"2 215+ pretty much the biggest in the NFC East. I don’t want a big safety, they have to worry about getting deep against all the weapons that the Eagles and Cowboys have. Phillips is big enough.

Even Michael Johnson is 6"2 207. So with KP in there, the Giants actually had a pretty BIG safety tandem.

..and Pat Angerer is from Iowa (and Kenny Phillips went to the U….Miami)

@FreeBradshaw

Good points, my college scouting is a bit lacking – i do not watch that many games. I just look on paper and youtube so i oft confuse people and their schools.

My point with Kenny Phillips is – he played Free Safety in college. He is only an above average hitter/tackler and is above average as a cover safety.

Michael Johnson was a steal at the 7th round and was very valuable these past few years – but i think if we strengthen the safety position it can help our corners and linebackers. Michael Johnson doesnt have the strength to be a factor in the run game or in blitz packages. Having athletes on defense allows players to move around and give different looks.

Just look at Roman Harper of the Saints – against the Patriots he would often line up next to the LDE and would sometimes drop into coverage, sometimes blitz or even play a zone… He has the size to get by and challenge most running backs in the NFL which makes him an asset blitzer – i do not feel that Phillips and Johnson can do this.

A free safety that is going to be available is Danieal Manning of the Bears – he may be a bit injury prone. But he can return kicks extremely well and is an extremely athletic Free Safety that can be a factor playing at the line of scrimmage. I do not know if the Bears will let one of their Abiliene Christian prizes go – but his name should start circulating around these forums

by bigtrueblue on Dec 2, 2009 11:30 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

I agree

and I mean, its pretty much a foregone conclusion the Giants need one or 2 safeties to not only compete with MJ and Phillips but to provide depth. It has absolutely killed the team being forced to play CC Brown and Rouse entirely too much.

It even has killed Michael Johnson, who when he played with a responsible trustworthy safety in tandem, like even James Butler was, MJ was pretty damn good.

I don’t know what you see in KP tho that he’s below average in tackling and coverage. I mean, Jason Witten and Chris Cooley did squat in those first 2 games, and that’s where KP covers, the TE. Deep coverage was also his game….he was really on his way to becoming the next great NFL safety from the U.

And KP sure as hell was a good blitzer. Spags used to make him go on search and sack missions he called them.

I think the injury to KP hurts more than everyone who even thought it was a big loss did.

KP was the lynchpin to the Giants D this year for Sheridan. He was going to do everything.

And I highly doubt that the Giants don’t address this.

I’ve heard from Reese himself that he felt that the safety position in the Giants D is not as important as others……I think he’ll reassess that now.

Terell Thomas

In like week 7 i said that once Aaron Ross comes back – hopefully our corner back situation is solved and we can use Bruce Johnson & Dockery in the Nickle and Dime and move Terell Thomas to Safety. He is a big kid that seems to have a nose for the ball.

In regards to CC Brown – that Robert Meachem touchdown was one of the ugliest single performances by a DB this season.

“My point with Kenny Phillips is – he played Free Safety in college. He is only an above average hitter/tackler and is above average as a cover safety.”

What im trying to say is Kenny Phillips is an above average safety, easily a top 15 safety in the league. I just think our defense would be better having two combo safety’s that are true athletes.

Taylor Mays is 6-3 230.. which is basically Micahel Boley. Except Taylor Mays can run a 4.4 40 yd dash. With so many good TE’s in the NFC EAST Taylor Mays could really be a factor going forward.

First off – dont know where below average came from. Second, Chris Cooley did pretty well against us if i remember correctly. And that dallas game was one in which tony romo couldn’t hit a parked car from 10 yards away.. Not to mention sometimes we have Linebackers run with the TE…

you can't move Thomas to safety.

First off,…if Phillips was ‘too small" then Thomas, who is 6"0 190, is waay too small. Also, he’s bee pretty much teh Giants best corner for what that’s worth, you can’t go and downgrade 2 positions by making him re-learn safety. He’s the reason the CB situation is "solved’ right now.

The first 2 games..we had no LB to run with a TE, cuz there was no Boley. Cooley had a decent game, largely cuz of 3 catches in garbage time, other than that it was mostly dink and dunk, harmless stuff cuz KP was in his grill.

Taylor Mays might run a 4.4 at 6"3 230…which makes you good only in the land of Al Davis. From what I’ve seen of him, he’s stiff in coverage largely due to his size. He also plays more of a rover type safety..which means he plays more like a coverage LB who covers TE’s and RB’s, not the deep half of the field.

I also haven’t seen much of Mays to see that he’s a tough bastard. I want the Giants to focus on getting tougher.

There’s plenty of other safeties in the draft who are much better than Mays…like Morgan Burnett on Georgia Tech. He’s about 6"2 220 himself, but is more of a sledgehammer type safety, a TOUGH BASTARD.

more of a sledgehammer?

My only issue with Mays is he would prefer hitting someone and forcing them to drop the ball than going for the deflection or INT.

But the kid is a sledgehammer himself

Well yea,

Mays is a sledgehammer…and like you said…its actually a BIG concern of whether he’d go for the hit vs. the pick…which is something Burnett knows how to do, he’s better in coverage.

And is Mays really a sledgehamer…or is he just knocking the hell out of Jacquizz Rogers, all 5"6 165lbs of him?

Its just, what do the Giants need? An all around safety like Burnett, or a guy like Mays who may be better fit to switching to LB cuz of his suspect coverage skills?
