BFTB Answers Your Chargers Questions
Hey fellas. My name is John and, much like Ed does here, I manage Bolts From The Blue (SBNation's community for Chargers fans).
Each week this season, I've been putting up a FanPost at the upcoming opponent's community and offering to answer any Chargers-related questions in the comments. Some weeks it's been a fantastic conversation, with lots of knowledge being passed back and forth. Some weeks it has turned into nothing but trash-talking (which is the opposite of what we're aiming for). Either way, it's usually fun. So if you have any questions about the Chargers, fire away in the comments section and I'll be sure to answer them ASAP.
A few notes about the upcoming game:
- I live in Philly, and since this is as close as the Chargers get to me this season....I will be attending and tailgating. I am not loud and I am not obnoxious. Please don't throw batteries at me.
- I grew up in central NJ, so just about everyone I know is either an Eagles or Giants fan. Many of my close friends will not talk to me this week to avoid a big argument.
- For the record, I think Eli Manning is a very good quarterback. However, I think Philip Rivers is better. Accorsi and Reese have just done a better job of building the team around Manning.
- I am a HUGE Ernie Accorsi fan. I read his book and admire his work. His recommendation of Jerry Reese for the next GM was a classy, and very smart, move.
- Despite the Giants record for the past 3 games, I am very afraid of them. The Chargers have had a hard time stopping big, bruising RBs this season.
- I hate Jeremy Shockey. I always have. When Giants fans try to tell me that Eli was working with a weakened team in 2007 because he had Kevin Boss in the playoffs instead of Shockey, I know they're stupid.
Please Rec this FanPost to keep it at the top until Sunday. And let's hope for a good, competitive game.
FanPosts are written by community members. This is simply a way for community members to express opinions too long to be contained in a comment.

Just go easy on us
When you have 40 points by halftime just run out the clock in the second half and get it overwith.
That said the last time I looked at the stats Eli has a better completion % than Rivers going into this game – don’t worry Rivers will be able to pad his stats in this game!

Eli: 57.9%
Philip: 59.7%

Ah
The stats were prior to the games played last weekend as Eli’s percentage has gone from 64.4% after 5 weeks to this – he will be below 55% before we know it!

Questions
Were you surprised by the release of Chambers?
How is Merriman playing or not as the case maybe?
Has LT lost it and is Sproles better as a change of pace back or as a starter?

Were you surprised by the release of Chambers?
Yes, but only because I didn’t think they’d eat his huge contract just for the roster spot. He’s been outplayed by Malcom Floyd (who took his starter’s spot officially last week) and Legedu Naanee all season, and for most of 2008 as well. Chambers is not a viable starting WR in the league anymore and will have a hard time finding a home with all of his dropped passes.
How is Merriman playing or not as the case maybe?
Just as I had hoped, Shawne has gotten better every week. In the beginning of the season, he was practically dragging his leg around and definitely wasn’t in “football shape” (he was bulky and not very flexible or quick). As the season has gone on, his knee has gotten noticeably better and he’s regained most of his quickness. I’ll idiotically point out that he had huge games against the Chiefs and Raiders, but it’s better than nothing. The Giants offensive line will be the first real test since Shawne and the team has declared him 100%.
Has LT lost it and is Sproles better as a change of pace back or as a starter?
A question I seem to get every week. You first have to define what “it” is. Tomlinson is certainly capable of being a good RB in the NFL, ala Fred Taylor in 2007-08, but he’s no longer capable of being an every-down back and certainly won’t compete for the MVP award anymore. He’s a valuable player, but not a game-changing weapon.
Sproles is not a starter. Never was, never will be. The few games he’s had to start in place of LT have made this very, very obvious. Darren is at his best when he gets around 10 offensive touches per game (usually something like 6 rushes, 4 catches).

Big decisions
Your GM has shown that he will make big decisions and in season trades to improve the team.
We need to see if the Giants are capable of such big decisions. You cannot cite Plax as a big decision as every team would have done the same thing.

How many times will Phillip Rivers
target C.C. Brown? Do you worry he might strain a leg muscle or three jumping up and down to celebrate too many touchdowns in the aftermath of said aiming at Brown?
by brisulph on Nov 3, 2009 10:03 AM EST reply actions 0 recs
If he’s been as bad as you guys say, he’ll be targeted often. The Chargers’ offense this year has been one based around big plays in the passing game, specifically deep balls thrown by Rivers (our receivers aren’t very dangerous after the catch). That will test any team’s safeties.

Whats up John...
First of I disagree about Rivers being better than Eli, i think Rivers is a better than average QB in the league but not better than Eli. Just my 2 cents..
Speaking of the QB position, with Drew Brees and the success he is having in NO, do you think that the Chargers made the right call in letting Brees go and putting the future in Rivers?

Speaking of the QB position, with Drew Brees and the success he is having in NO, do you think that the Chargers made the right call in letting Brees go and putting the future in Rivers?
Absolutely not. First of all, if you compare what Rivers has accomplished and line it up with what Brees had done at this point in his career…..there’s no question that Rivers is the better QB. Therefore, Rivers still has the potential to be as good, or better, than Drew Brees. Actually, you could argue that Rivers had the better season in 2008 since he posted a higher QB rating.
Secondly, Drew Brees was offered the same contract from the Chargers that he eventually signed with New Orleans. He chose to leave because he didn’t want to compete with Rivers for the starting QB job.
Third, Brees already had questionable arm strength and was coming off major surgery on his right shoulder (that he injured in the last game of the season). To say that there were questions of whether he would ever be an effective QB again is an understatement.
Fourth, considering the Chargers were already investing time and money into Rivers, it wouldn’t have made sense for the team to fall all over themselves trying to get Brees back.

Yeah, but Bree's was in the ultra competitive NFC south
and had no defense
River’s stats were in the weakest division in football.

Let’s look at the strength of the defenses each faced in 2008. How many top 10 defenses (in terms of points allowed per game) did each face?
Rivers: 5
Brees: 3 (TB counts for 2)
The fact that Brees didn’t have a defense shouldn’t effect his QB rating. It was, however, part of the reason he almost broke the passing yardage record.

Not to change the subject here
But, if everything that had transpired during the 2004 draft and the trade had never happened, how well do you think Rivers would handle NY, the media and the fans? He seems to have the personality to belong, but a personality that would also clash given the situation. On the other hand, Eli seemingliy being more reserved, which would reflect SD, has been rediculed extremely here in NY, but it has not bothered him.
Could Rivers thrive in NY, even in stretches of inconsistencies?
by Hootman on Nov 3, 2009 2:43 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Rivers himself has said that he’s happy he’s not playing in NYC because he wouldn’t want to deal with the media. Not that he couldn’t, he definitely could. Criticism doesn’t really rattle Rivers. Nothing does. The issue is that he’s a family man who would prefer to be an unknown than a celebrity. Being a Giant would put his wife and kids more into the spotlight, which he’s definitely not interested in.
So, to answer your question….Philip definitely could handle it (that guy is ridiculously comfortable in his own skin), but it’s not something he would ever want. Considering he still drives a minivan and rushes home after games/practices to spent more time with his family, it would sortof clash with his lifestyle.

At least he has a reason
Despite this new contract, Rivers says this money won’t change him or his family.
“I’m gonna keep the minivan, it’s the most efficient,” said Rivers. “They can get in and out. It’s hard to buckle them in their car seats when you gotta climb back there like in all those SUV’s.”

Seriously though, a car seat is a car seat...
Regardless of what vehicle it’s in. I know first hand so i’m qualified for such a debate! Car seats are hard to buckle, but it doesn’t mean you have to have a Minivan if your loaded $$$? The vehicle is different, but the car seat isn’t!
C’mon Phil, splurge or pamper yourself. You can do way better than a Minivan! lol
by Hootman on Nov 4, 2009 7:57 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
wrong
From a guy who was ducking into a 2-door Civic to buckle the kids, the guy is right. You want some space. Also you want those fram clips so the seat has 3-point restraints tight to the vehicle frame, instead of just seatbelts holding the kid seats. Proof I’m old: Minivans are the shit. And I don’t have one.

I was implying
He could upgrade to something with similar room to maneuver thats a bit sportier than a minivan. Buckling my kids in, from a 4 door car to an SUV is a bit easier in terms of personal room, but it’s still the seat and their buckles with limited hand room!
by Hootman on Nov 7, 2009 11:01 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
V6, lighter, less rollover
better gas mileage… really all “SUV” means is a rebranding of the “unsexy” minivan by carmakers to get soccer mom’s and ball-less dudes to feel like they’re driving a truck. Half of these so-called “CUV” or “small SUV” is on a car platform anyway. Look how they neutered the Durango. That is a minivan my friend. Buy a four-door truck if you want a truck with room for the kids.
You can tell how suckered Americans are about their carbuying when you travel to other places and see all these 80s and 90s utility 4-door trucks driving around from Mitsubishi, Toyota, etc. that you know sold for a tiny fraction of the price of a Ridgeline or Dodge “quad cab” … proof is that you can’t really buy a 4-door small truck or utility… it’s gotta be a yacht on wheels for the upsell…

We all can disagree till we're blue in the face
on who’s teh better QB. Both Giants and Chargers fans will tell you their QB is better…also they will tell you their QB sucks when he’s playing bad.
I think we can leave it at both are very good. Kinda hard to promote Eli right now, after 2/3 horribly played games and one where his teamates didn’t step up.
That said…Rivers will show me nothing I don’t already know…he’s a great QB. The thing I see with the Chargers..aka, Cowboys West (not fanbase…talent and failed expectations wise).
The thing I wanna know, is Antonio Gates FINALLY back to being the best TE in the game? He’s had numerous nagging injuries, yet unlike Tomlinson (we refuse to call him LT on BBV…I think you know why) he’s played through them.
Also, given the fact the Giants may be starting 3 LB’s with offensive lineman speed…will Sproles have about 500 yards of offense on Sunday?

The thing I wanna know..do the Chargers show something different this year? They’ve been a contender since Rivers started coming along…yet they just haven’t put it together. Does this team show anything different than previous seasons to show that THIS Chargers team may be the one to win it all?

My philosophy
is that the playoffs have a lot to do with luck. The Chargers have had bad luck the last two seasons once they’ve gotten to the playoffs, but I believe the Chargers are still tied with the most playoff wins over that timespan. So, to answer your question, I have no idea.
I think this team is as good as 2008’s team (that lost to the eventual SB champions), and if they get lucky with health and a few calls in the playoffs I could see them finally making it to the Super Bowl.

How'd you become a Charger fan, growing up in Jersey?
On a football note: how do you feel about Norv Turner? His reputation around the league isn’t too great, and the Chargers certainly haven’t been as impressive a regular season team since Schotty got fired, but he has taken you to the AFC Championship game and multiple playoff appearances.

My family moved to San Diego when I was 13 and I became a football fan that same year. I moved back to Philly 8 years later, but I’ll forever be a Chargers fan.
Exactly. I like Norv because he’s had more success than Marty when it matters. The team always seems to start the season slow and have a bunch of injuries, but I think if there’s anything wrong it’s that Norv doesn’t run a good camp and wasn’t able to hire a good defensive coordinator because by time he was hired there was nobody left (Marty kindof screwed us that way). I think Norv is an excellent coach, and specifically an excellent offensive coach. He just needs a few breaks and maybe for a great D coordinator to fall in his lap.

Just out of curiosity
which team do you guys hate the most? I know the traditional rivalry is Chargers-Raiders, but with how bad the Raiders have been lately, I wonder if maybe now you hate the Broncos more, or maybe even the Pats, Colts, or Steelers?

I’d also throw in the Patriots, due to the playoff loses and that the Pats take in former Chargers players.

at the start of the season I thought that the Chargers running game would be well lets be honest not good. Has that been the case? Also will Sproles be able to make it through an entire season getting the amount of carries he is getting? Its been a tough couple of years for LaDa, is he regaining the form he once had or is it gone?? Thanks

Yes it has. However, part of the reason is Nick Hardwick being out for all but the first half of Week 1.
Also will Sproles be able to make it through an entire season getting the amount of carries he is getting?
I think so. He’s really not getting that much. In games where LT is healthy, Sproles has been getting less than 10 offensive touches per game. I think he’s on pace for about 100 carries, but if Tomlinson stays healthy he’ll come in under that. That’s not a big jump in touches for him over 2008.
Its been a tough couple of years for LaDa, is he regaining the form he once had or is it gone??
He’ll never have that form again. He has too many miles on his legs. Production wise, LT can fall anywhere between 2007-08 Fred Taylor and 2007-08 Edgerrin James. We’re still not real sure which one he’s going to be.
