Broncos 16, Giants 0: 2nd half Open Thread

Well, fellas! I'd love to say it can't get worse. But, I have zero confidence in that statement.

Anyway, hopefully the second half is better than the first.

Things look bad

But the game isn’t over guys. Let’s see how they respond in the second half.

GO NY GIANTS!!

Osi and Blackburn are pissed off, hopefully the team follows their lead

I wonder what Tom Coughlin is doing/saying right now

Probably just thinking about turkey.

that really is sad

they’re getting an English band that knows NOTHING about football for the halftime show of the most watched game of the year. Maybe next year they can get Bjork??

by sexyscottish on Nov 26, 2009 9:56 PM EST up reply actions

What I don't get is

even bad teams don’t get blown out like this week after week!

Have the Giants gone from Super Bowl champs and perenial playoff contender to a 6-10 team that needs to rebuild in a four game span?

At least we had SB 42 it looks like it’ll be awile until this team makes the playoffs again let alone

by Landeta on Nov 26, 2009 9:55 PM EST reply actions

Our coach turned back into a pumpkin

I was thinking the same thing, this is the third game I have seen where the giants are not even in the game, and the scary part is besides the Saints, Philly and Denver are not great teams.

by Late for Dinner on Nov 26, 2009 9:56 PM EST up reply actions

Once a year getting blown out is one thing

but my god. I’m sorry but Denver is an average team, not awful but not great.

Orton is more of a caretaker and he’s making all of the throws

The O can’t block anybody. BJ, well I don’t know What happend to him

by Landeta on Nov 26, 2009 10:01 PM EST up reply actions

Looks like a lot of Wet Willy's tomorow

I don’t want to throw in the towel, but I just don’t see the Giants coming back they look horrible. Besides Gilbride will play it close to the vest and not change a thing in the second half, if we are luky we might get a TD

by Late for Dinner on Nov 26, 2009 9:55 PM EST reply actions

Get back to Football 101

Let’s TACKLE.
Let’s HOLD ON TO THE BALL.
Let’s PROTECT.
Let’s GET IN POSITION once in a while.

Let’s have a drive that lasts longer than 6 plays.

I’m sorry to say it, Ed, but they don’t look like they want it.

Maybe they can change my mind.

Sorry about the caps. I have no voice currently lol

We didn't even have a chance for the "perfect season", but we did have the perfect ending.

by GAgiantfan on Nov 26, 2009 9:55 PM EST reply actions

Our defense. . . . .

is doing the best they can to keep us in the game. It could be 0-28. Jacobs, the Wide Receivers, and Eli needs to step up. Gilbride needs to get the offense in a rhythm and call plays according on how the Broncos are playing on defense.

by njgiant on Nov 26, 2009 9:57 PM EST reply actions

Currently

our “defense” is more offensive.

We didn't even have a chance for the "perfect season", but we did have the perfect ending.

To make things worse....

I benched the Packers D in favor of the Giants D on my three $$ league fantasy teams….God Damnit.

by sexyscottish on Nov 26, 2009 9:58 PM EST reply actions

ouch

I started Steve Smith over Donald Driver. Bad call

by cjmulrain on Nov 26, 2009 10:06 PM EST up reply actions

Why are teams getting 5 - 8 yards on every running play?!

it makes no sense! Even when the Giants D struggles in the past it’s typically the secondary not the run D but they cant stop anybody on the ground

by Landeta on Nov 26, 2009 10:02 PM EST reply actions

WAY TO GO TT!!!

LET’S GET THIS SHIT STARTED NOW!!!

by sexyscottish on Nov 26, 2009 10:04 PM EST reply actions

that's the spark...

let’s see if our offense can capitalize.

"We're only going to score 17 points?!" - Tom Brady

by iLL on Nov 26, 2009 10:04 PM EST reply actions

Too bad he could not return that for a TD

thats the only way we could score.

Guarntee we settle for a FG at best or turn it back over.

by Landeta on Nov 26, 2009 10:05 PM EST reply actions

DO YOU BELIEVE???

Time to get back in this guys!!!

GO NY GIANTS!!

by RobDomaine on Nov 26, 2009 10:10 PM EST reply actions

If they overturn this I'm gonna flip out

he may have been out, but it’s impossible to tell and you’ve gotta go with the call on the field in that case. The refs get this wrong ALL the time

We're not Dallas, NE, or NO...

so be ready to flip out because I agree with you 100%. Despite the fact that he was CLEARLY in bounds.

by sexyscottish on Nov 26, 2009 10:12 PM EST up reply actions

We NEED a TD though...

A FG wouldn’t demoralize Denver at all. In fact, it would probably give them more confidence.

by sexyscottish on Nov 26, 2009 10:11 PM EST reply actions

GOD DAMNIT...

Stop using Jacobs like a speed back!!!!!!!!

by sexyscottish on Nov 26, 2009 10:13 PM EST reply actions

Need to go Philly offense style here

cause the run is D.O.A. every time. And we all know Ware will not get any more carries tonight.

What do you guys think of Charlie Weis at OC next year?

by XLII on Nov 26, 2009 10:15 PM EST reply actions

I actually don't think it's a bad idea

he’s a fantastic offensive coach and he’s got a history with the Giants.

by RobDomaine on Nov 26, 2009 10:16 PM EST reply actions

We need to hit Orton...

he’s still nowhere near 100% and we need to beat up on his sorry ass. Hit him hard enough so he starts hearing the footsteps and making mistakes.

by sexyscottish on Nov 26, 2009 10:17 PM EST reply actions

I think the Browns could beat us!

I think the Giants are a bottom 5 team in the League right now. They’ll finish 6-10 . . . gutless!

by Landeta on Nov 26, 2009 10:18 PM EST reply actions

and no call again. This is getting ridiculous now.

by sexyscottish on Nov 26, 2009 10:18 PM EST reply actions

it’s not just against the Giants. It just seems that way when they are lossing

by Landeta on Nov 26, 2009 10:22 PM EST up reply actions

Agreed...

but living in New England I get to see a lot of Pats games too…and trust me when I say that they get damn near EVERY call in their favor when they play.

Once again Giants get their doors blown off

I know their is a lot of blame to go around, but when you loose games the way the giants are loosing, I.E. not in the game at all I think our coaches are getting out coached along with the players getting their butts kicked. This Giants team reminds me of the Dan Reeves Era.

by Late for Dinner on Nov 26, 2009 10:52 PM EST reply actions

This is a lot worse than the Dan Reeves Era!

Those teams had Dave Brown at the helm!

Those teams sucked talent wise. This team has some players.

Gutless

I’ve been following Giants football since 1963, and I’ve never quit on a season, even when the team was horrible. But this team is so gutless and clueless, that I have officially given up. I don’t care if they win out the rest of the way. I’m done. There’s nobody on this team that I like right now. I say let’s play guys like Goff, Sintim, Beatty, Beckum andBarden down the stretch and get them some experience and see which of them are worth keeping.

by Tucker Fredrickson on Nov 26, 2009 10:57 PM EST reply actions

It's all bad.

Hard to know where to begin. We’re getting outcoached in every phase of the game. No penetration on the defensive side of the ball, and the offensive line has become laughably overrated. Not enough athletes on this team. While like most everybody I’ve been high on Jerry Reese, he’s gonna have to come up big this offseason, especially on defense. If Kehl and Goff were players they’d be on the field by now. And, why not give Sintim a shot — he can’t do worse than what they’re running out there now.

by scoop85 on Nov 26, 2009 10:57 PM EST reply actions

We know the team doesnt suck, so you guys need to stop saying that. But I am having trouble pointing out what is wrong with the team. I know the injuries have devastated us this year but the play calling hasnt been very good all year. What do you guys think the problem is?

I feel like the Giants

Missed Bradshaw more than anything. I hate to say it but Jacobs should be traded in the offseason. He can’t run with any conviction (healthy or not) and the coaches have no idea how to use him. Why run a stretch play with Jacobs?

You guys also need a complete secondary overhaul. That looked like….the Seahawks to be honest. CC Brown is awful.

Finally how has Rocky Bernard been for you guys? He seemed to be a non-factor tonight. Is he a frequent starter?

Good luck the rest of the season but for now I really think the Giants are just a mediocre-to-bad team. Something completely fell off after your undefeated start.

I don’t understand. He stands on the sideline with no emotion. His team has underperformed all season. It’s painfully obvious this team this season is poorly coached. Receivers run wild. We have no defense up the middle. Our D ends have no containment and over pursue. Our d tackes get blown off the line.

by FrankB0318 on Nov 26, 2009 11:28 PM EST reply actions

it’s not the first time hes done that. Last year when we lost to the eagles in the playoffs he looked like a deer caught in the headlights of a freight truck. totally lost and bewildered.

Lack of emotion--TC

Good point. Remember how he used to go apoplectic when things went bad? Maybe the fire in his belly has been quenched? That could go a long way to explaining the lack of emotion displayed by the players.

Super bowl

he has his super bowl. This season he just doesn’t seem to care.

No, that’s the look of a man who doesn’t know what else to do or the realization he just doesnt have the horses. Plain and simple.

I don't disagree

but change it up. Put BS up in the booth. Allow another coach to call the defense.

by FrankB0318 on Nov 26, 2009 11:45 PM EST up reply actions

An example

Early in the game BS calls zone blitz. Canty in pass coverage??? WTF! That makes zero sense to me.

by FrankB0318 on Nov 26, 2009 11:46 PM EST up reply actions

no.

that’s cuz they snap the ball inside 4 seconds of the play clock running out.

“Omaha set” was part of the Giants snap count for the past 3 years…its always worked when they actually get the play in.

No urgency on O. Jacobs is running like a pussy. The defense is in disarray.

Why

Does Eli check out of a passing play into a running play then we lose yardage? It happens far too often.

by FrankB0318 on Nov 26, 2009 11:39 PM EST reply actions

isn't it amazing how the defens knows EXACTLY

what the check down is and EXACTLY where its going?

Eli

Let’s face it: Eli is just plain mediocre. As Giants fans, we love to continue to remember SB 42, but Eli was mediocre before that and again after. The NY press was calling for his head before that great SB run, and now he once again is unable to command the team like his brother Peyton. He is a ‘manager’ not an elite QB. I wish we had Rivers, who is worlds better, and SD also got Merriman and Kaeding – that was a horrible trade. Eli has never finished a season with a QB rating above the 80s. With the team unable to run, he has been exposed as a mediocre QB. Let’s just admit it – the SB win was a fluke based on a great “D” and pass rush, and that 4 game playoff run the only 4 game stretch where Eli has performed well in his pro career. Let’s stop thinking about the past and concentrate on the present – Giants and Eli are both mediocre.

by ZigNate on Nov 26, 2009 11:39 PM EST reply actions

get off of that BS.. it’s over and done with. I expect more of you guys coming out of the woodwork and putting it ALL on Eli. You guys are real savvy fans, because it’s guaranteed we would have drafted Merriman and Kaeding right? you know this for sure, right?

by lboogie25 on Nov 26, 2009 11:41 PM EST up reply actions

Eli

We still would have had the draft picks, so we could have two other quality players if not Merriman and Kaeding. But the truth is that Rivers is better than Eli – look at QB ratings over the past 4 years. look at the ability to throw deep, look at the fire of the leader. Eli plays behind supposedly the best “O” line in the game and he can not be relied upon to move the team down the field. If there is any pressure on him, he decompensates. A ‘manager’ is good on a tean when the “O” line and “D” are both good, but you need a real QB when you have to rely n him to win the game when the other two factors are not present. In Sports Illustrated, the NFL players recently voted Eli as the most overrated player in the entire league – I trust their assessment. The next week they voted Rivers one of the most underrated in the league. Face it – we got swindled………………. how long are you willing to keep remembering the one great SB run without facing the reality of where we stand now??

by ZigNate on Nov 26, 2009 11:49 PM EST up reply actions

Eli is good

The offensive line is bad.

ME! BANE!

by SSreporters on Nov 26, 2009 11:42 PM EST up reply actions

"O" Line

Last year SI proclaimed them the best “O” line in the NFL and they have the same guys this year. When the Giants started 11-1 last year, all Eli was doing was handing the ball off and watching the runners gain chunks of yardage – let’s face it, Trent Dilfer could do that (in fact he did with the 2000 Ravens and won a SB). A quality team and quality QB find out how to win when the run is taken away, usually by throwing the ball, but Eli does not seem up, to the task.

by ZigNate on Nov 26, 2009 11:58 PM EST up reply actions

you keep quoting SI like anyone gives a rats ass about SI

…they are full of crap most of the time.

Last year…at one point, yea, they were the best. They still are very good, but if you paid attention to this game, they couldn’t block a 3 man rush at times (3 guys got tied up on Vonnie Holliday one play…3!), Dumervil is good, but he blew up Diehl.

They are not teh best O-Line in the game.

Stop with the Trent Difler stuff.

The Giants won with the pass in all 6 of their wins this year. The pass was very good against the Chargers too.

Quaility QB’s can be assured that when they pass well, their RB will feed off of that. Jacobs is not doing that this year.

You’re wrong in your assessment of Eli.

"It ain't over till its over"---

by FreeBradshaw on Nov 27, 2009 12:08 AM EST up reply actions

6 WINS

They won with the pass against 4 bad teams and 2 mediocre ones.

I hate to admit it, but Eli appears to be a one-and-done SB winning QB who was in the right place at the right time (a team with momentum, and a good “D” in the playoffs), like Dilfer, Brad Johnson, Jim Plunkett, Doug Williams and several others. In his other playoff appearances, he has been terrible, being shutout (at home!) by Carolina, and last year being thrashed (at home!) by Philly. In those 2 home playoff games, Eli has put a total of 11 points on the board. Face it, Eli is a ‘manager’ not an elite QB. Were it not for the SB win, he would have been tarred and feathered out of town by now.

I am not quoting SI on the ‘overated’ category – it was the poll of the NFL players.

by ZigNate on Nov 27, 2009 12:18 AM EST up reply actions

polls of NFL players...

usually has about 30 or so NFL players..and who knows what division its from.

Eli is not the most overrated player in the game…take a gander at what he did last week.

Please stop comparing him to those players.

If you actually paid attention to the 07 playoffs, you’d notice that the running game was not very good and the Giants did actually score points. The passing game was the reason for that.

And you’re obviously not a Giants fan so I’m don with you.

This quote

Were it not for the SB win, he would have been tarred and feathered out of town by now
assures me of that.

YOU'VE GOT ME WRONG

I am a Giants fan (I detest the Cowboys) but I am a realist. These blogs are not only for ‘rah-rah’ but for examining and analyzing the shortcomings of our team. In the 07 playoffs, we played a crappy TB team that had no business in the WC game, then played 3 good games, limilting the opponents to much scoring. Hey, it was a great run and we all loved it………….. but it cannot prevent us from at this point examining the problems with our team and Eli. Do you really think that he is a top quality QB? Based on what? Only one successful foray into the playoffs and lousy QB ratings throughout most of his career? How long are we to be blinded by a string of 4 good games two years ago?

by ZigNate on Nov 27, 2009 12:31 AM EST up reply actions

Disagree

The O line has been mediocre. Eli has little time to throw. I can’t pin it on Eli. The O line run blocking is also terrible. Without Eli we lose vs Falcons and have no chance vs SD.

by FrankB0318 on Nov 26, 2009 11:43 PM EST up reply actions

I've noticed that no...

the run blocking is not terrible.

Jacobs is not running where he used to. He’s cutting a hole too late or bouncing it to the outside where he’s too slow and big to gain anything.

I’m pinning a lot of this on the running game…and the running game on Jacobs.

"It ain't over till its over"---

by FreeBradshaw on Nov 26, 2009 11:57 PM EST up reply actions

disagree.

Eli’s been great at times this year. He’s inconsistent.

It just seems that when his WR drop a pass (Steve Smith….) he seems to fall apart a bit.

There are not many QB’s that can do good when their RB is not even a threat to do anything…which is the case with the Giants right now.

No RUN GAME

Rivers does not seem have much of a problem moving the Chargers without a running game…………….

by ZigNate on Nov 26, 2009 11:59 PM EST up reply actions

Aside from the Giants game...

TOmlinson gets over 20 carries per game in their wins. Its just to show that its there. The Giants running game is completely useless at this point. Its not useless like the Giants running game right now.

A QB needs the threat of the run to be good. Every good team has it. The Giants running game is no threat right now.

he has a run game. Just cuz they don’t rack up a ton of yards doesn’t mean its not effective.

RUNNING GAME???

I don’t know how you think SD has a threat of a running game when before the breakout (when they were waaaay ahead) against Denver, they were dead last averaging 75 yards per game on the ground

Eli's not mediocre. He's good,

but I don’t think he’s as good as many BBVers believe.

by FrankB0318 on Nov 26, 2009 11:48 PM EST reply actions

It's not just Eli that isn't, wasn't, and probably won't be great --

2007: the Giants are a middling to good team that clicks at the perfect moment, rides it into next season and then the pink cloud evaporates, the heat fades and they become the frogs they really, at their core, are. A 10-6, 9-7, wild card frog. That’s what’s been built over the past 5 years, 2007 was an anamoly (sic). The Giants are not built like the pats, or the saints for that reason (this team is solid in a way the giants never have been.) The pats are year in, year out, in real contention because the foundation is more than solid, it’s a monster that can withstand injuries, bad luck, etc etc .The Giants can’t. They were a lucky wild card team and the fans, myself included, bought into the fantasy they were something more. How many games have they won since late November of 2008? Think about that. It’s beyond this season, it began a year ago and won’t end anytime soon unfortunately. Call me negative. I could care less. The Giants are a love. But I’m tough with them, BECAUSE I’ve loved them so much, for so long, invested so much time. The O line needs major retooling and a trip to the land of ponce de leon. Feagles, out. Tynes, out. D-Line, new philosophy and new stud. Linebackers, stud wanted. DBs, actually, at the end of the day, they won’t be seen as the group that needs the most work, you’ll see.
QB, needs to click into the next gear, may not ever happen, maybe after his 33rd birthday. RB’s, Jacobs will be slower next year, draft! WRs/TEs: set and good to go. So, basically, this entire team needs work in every area, save WRs/TEs. What does all this mean? I have no excuse not to join my girlfriend at Sunday Tango Melangas.

by ZILLAG on Nov 27, 2009 12:39 AM EST reply actions

RIGHT ON

I agree. Too bad FreeBradshaw is lost in his personal fantasyland. Eli is not the kind of QB who can take a this team anywhere….. the sooner we admit it to ourselves the better.

by ZigNate on Nov 27, 2009 12:53 AM EST up reply actions

yea...fantasy land...

where Eli torched the Falcons last week and this week made plenty of good throws when his guys were actually open and when he wasn’t on his back.

Shame to blame Eli for this one….you can’t throw from your back or when your guys aren’t open.

The End..........

Thanksgiving’s game gave me nothing to be thankful for. I went to bed before the halftime for the first time in my 67 years as a Giants’ fan. The entire team sucks. The Lions play with more passion. If any of the Giants players worked in the real world – they would all be fired! Aren’t their millions enough motivation? And, Coach C, during his post game conference looked beat and worn out. Put in all the second string and let them play – they want a job. I am disgusted, humiliated and embarrassed. I would be very surprised if we won another game this season – our wins have all come against losing teams and we had to go to overtime to beat Atlanta. And, finally, why does that big bruising running back, Jacobs always get “hurt” and come out – why can’t he pound down defenses and run them over? Who put out the “fire”? Since Antonio Pierce said playing the Raiders was like a scrimmage – that is how we have been playing and now he is possibly out for a season – payback is a bitch. grgiants
