Around SBN: Interview With UMD Athletic Director, Dr. Debbie Yow

From FOX's Jay Glazer:

The NFL is implementing a new policy it hopes will help in the fight to protect players in the issue of head trauma and concussion.

NFL team doctors were informed this week that each team will now be required to supplement their medical staffs with an "independent neurologist or neurosurgeon" to specifically help with concussions, FOX Sports has learned.

As far as I'm concerned, anything the league can do to aid the long-term health of its players is a good thing.

Mandate the use of the new anti-concussion

helmets like the Revolution would be a nice next step.

this move isn't good enough

players should sit out a mandatory 4 weeks after a concussion.

we also need anti concussioin helmets and double sided mouth guards.

Good

As Ed said, anything to protect the health of the players is good. TMQ wrote about this a bit last week in the wake of Westbrook’s second concussion, and touched specifically on helmets, mandatory rest after concussions, independent medical evaluation, and double sided mouth guards.

Concussion prevention prior to play

http://www.sportingnews.com/blog/the_sporting_blog/entry/view/42133/mouthguards_key_to_avoiding_becoming_a_drooling_wreck

Many franchises and players are adopting a means of concussion prevention developed to counteract the boxers “Glass Jaw”. Matt Cassel has not have a concussion in the NFL yet, he has been crushed even last year with the Patriots who’s team dentist invented a protocol now recognized by the Academy of Sports Dentistry in peer reviewed reseach data. What more does the league need to know, setting new standard for the head, neck and jaw are imperitive prior to play. Medical records will show, the Pats have the lowest concussion rate annually. www.mahercor.com
