Boley undergoes knee surgery

New York Giants linebacker Michael Boley underwent arthroscopic surgery this morning to repair a partially torn meniscus in his right knee, the team has announced.Boley will be sidelined for about four weeks.

This is a shame. Boley was terrific Sunday with five tackles, a sack and two passes defensed. He was rapidly becoming the athletic, play-making outside linebacker the Giants have lacked for a while.

Pretty rough start to his Giants career, isn't it? Hip surgery, a league-imposed suspension and now this.

Who takes over for Boley? My guess is Chase Blackburn, again.

The only good part

is that he will be out for 4 weeks (hopefully) and not longer.

These game injuries are annoying – but apart from Phillips none of them are for the season..

Maybe Sintim and Canty will see some game time this weekend.

Injuries

Yet, the Giants keep winning. it just shows how well this team is built, and how good the GM and scouts are at uncovering talent.

hate to rain on the parade

We beat one average team and three below average teams. Don’t really know that we’re all that good, as yet. Oh, and maybe Kehl will get shot based on his special teams play.

before people jump on you

I’ve had the same doubts. I’m hoping to enjoy the Raiders game, but I’m also chomping at the bit to see the top-notch competition

You play to win the game!

Thing is

You can certainly question the caliber of competition. But, the Giants have done exactly what good teams are supposed to do to bad ones — win games without giving them a chance.

I almost jumped on this earlier...

But decided not to.

Ed pretty much summed up my thoughts (as others too). But i will add that the Giants are doing this with injuries. Injuries nonetheless, the results are clear and simple. The Giants are not letting anyone off the hook, regardless of who we play, and who starts!!!

A bit harsh

Hindsight is very good at looking back and rating the teams you played.

No one knew how the Redskins would perform in week 1. Yes they have played badly since, but that does not mean that they were poor in week 1.

The Cowboys won well in week 1 and could easily be 3-1 – so I would not call them average.

The Buccs had piled up yards in weeks 1 and 2, so although winless they were an offfensive team which we shut down.

The Chiefs had played well against the Ravens and racked up 400 yards in a losing effort to the Raiders and again we shut them down.

All told we are playing well, stronger tests will happen but I do not subscribe to the theory that we are overrated or had an easy time of it.

the Bucs

were offensive alright

by Simms-McConkey on Oct 7, 2009 10:11 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Not sure I would...

Say three below average teams. But even if they are, I am pleased that this team is not only beating the teams they are supposed to, they are doing it in convincing fashion.

It was that long ago that the Giant’s played down to their competition more often than not. Just think about the MNF game against Cleveland last year. This team seems to have more focus. I take comfort in that.

Now let’s just hope they don’t look past this classic trap game. Oakland, while not winning, has not been blown out every week either.

my definitions

average team = .500 winning percentage (Cowboys)
below average team = <.500 winning percentage (KC, TB, Washington)
above avereage team = >.500 that would be us

Even when he returns

he will have to gear back up to full speed… again. Here’s hoping he can be ready for the last quarter of the schedule (and the play-offs… if we have still have a team that can fill the roster at that point the way things are going).

Ed, Love the blog...

but lately I hate the content :). I am becoming very nervous everytime I come here becasue someone new keeps going down when I do. Time to start a pool. Who’s next, Jacobs, Bradshaw, Smith……

When its 3rd and long, throw the ball past the marker.

Mr. Fester, that's not even funny :P
Time to start a pool. Who’s next, Jacobs, Bradshaw, Smith……

I almost cringe when watching every play now, given all these injuries. Even moreso, when i know there is one and i come here, to get the latest. Please say it ain’t so etc… Don’t bring up this idea, grrrrrr

Hey

I’m just the messenger. Let’s not even think about who’s next. Let’s think about how cool it will be, and how good this team could be, when it gets healthy.

Your right, stay positive. We are deep

but I demand that every player start wearing knee braces and stretch in the huddle after each play.

why do we always assume?

That we will get the whole team back? I mean I’ve been guilty of that too in the past, but we can’t assume that we will ever have 53 healthy and ready to go. I made that mistake with the mets this year(as did tons of others on the FAN). I always thought, if we could tread water till we get Reyes, beltran, putz, Maine, Delgado, etc. Back then who knows? Of course, its now Oct., and Reyes never got back, and Maine had about 4 starts, and putz is on a milk carton…you get the point.

I’m not tryna throw cold water on everyones hopes, and God knows I hope for the same(still waiting for that vaunted 5-1-5 defense) but I’m trying to temper my enthusiasm on the situation. Hell we’ve seen it early in the season. Get one man back, lose another.

Like I said, here’s to hoping I’m wrong

by wilddre22 on Oct 6, 2009 5:24 PM EDT via mobile reply actions   0 recs

it is a Shame

he was doing so well, and it looked like he was hitting his stride…good note is that it’s not for the year. Probably back in the 6th week (give 2 weeks to that 4 week estimate). Time to see what Wilkerson and Kehl have to offer, not just Chase. We know what Chase can give us for the most part. We need to see if these guys are truly quality backups/players. I say rotate them at least for the Raiders game. See who can be ready for the Saints and the tougher part of the schedule.

DAMN...

This is crappy news. Boley looked like he was fitting in really well with this defense. I hope when he comes back he will be able to contribute like he has so far. For now, Chase and Clint now have a chance to step up. And when we get Canty back, we should be able to maintain our defensive greatness.

Forget Kehl for this week

Yahoos now reporting he had surgery for a fractured left index finger, is out for this week and will be week to week. Seems like everytime you check the computer someone else is hurt :-(

can the injury bug leave NY and go somewhere else already!!!!

I don’t think i’ve ever seen anything like this…. in terms of injuries.

Here I am on my way back from work thinking “well, maybe Kehl can make some plays in boley’s absence”…shortly after I hear this…

Im about to start sacrificing farm animals to the football gods or something…

now tomorrow is Wed and we get the injury report…just great…

ITS PART OF THE GAME

Everyone cannot go through the season without some injury,Boley is a part of the giants defense ,hes like a grunt in the service, hes out there to do what it takes, and hes been doing this, going against some of the most bruttle hits to make plays takes toughness and at times they get hurt.he will be missed but its all in the game.speedy recovery but thats doubtful.

my best year was when i was in san diego and i got to watch the giants beat up denver in the superbowl,First bowl ever o ooooohrah.

Exactly

I’d bet if you randomly logged on to the blog of another NFL team, you’d find much the same as you now see here: fans cursing the capriciousness of the football gods for this injury or that injury suffered by this player or that on their favorite team.

Yeah, it’s a cliché. But it’s also a truism that injuries happen to all teams. Remember back in the preseason when it seemed like Philly was losing a key player every other day? Or how the Super Bowl Champs lost Polamalu – the heart and soul of their D – in the first game for several weeks? Or Da Bears losing Urlacher for the year on opening day? But big wheel keeps on turnin’, Proud Mary keeps on burnin’.

I think it’s one of the byproducts of this internet age in which we live. We can now follow every minute by minute development as it happens in real time instead of reading a condensed, two paragraph summation of the day’s events in tomorrow’s paper. Nowadays, any botched snaps in practice; each silly comment by a player; and every bump, bruise and strained hammy generates dozens of threads and hundreds of comments on a myriad of blogs. Each individual development takes on a life of its own, growing in importance to the point where it eclipses the big picture.

And what is the “big picture” as far as the 2009 edition of the G-Men are concerned? Defensively (where the injury bug has taken the biggest bite) we still have a relatively healthy Osi, Tuck, Kiwi, Robbins, Bernard & Cofield on the D-line. That’s already better than last year’s bunch – and if Canty returns in a few weeks, the improvement there could be off the charts. At LB, Pierce is playing much better than he did in ‘08, Wilk is finally healthy and might be able to hold down the weakside until Boley gets back. Again, an improvement over last year. The secondary has been hardest hit. Losing KP for the year was a huge blow and we’ve yet to see one of our starting CBs take the field. Yet with the ascendance of Webster to elite shutdown corner status, the emergence of Thomas and rookie find Bruce Johnson, that unit is playing nearly as well as last year’s bunch.

As far as the offense is concerned, so long as Eli and the starting O-line are good to go, we’ll be fine. That unit should be able to weather an injury to any other part of the offense. Lose Eli, of course, and all bets are off. And his health could very well be at risk should one of the big uglies up front go down. Anyone else on the offense – yes, even the RBs – I think could be replaced without too much of a falloff in production (and if you think I’m crazy, recall that the Steelers lost Parker and Mendenhall fairly early last year and had to rely on Mewelde Moore as their feature back for much of 2008. Didn’t work out too badly for ’em in the end)

All in all, big picture-wise, I’d say that even with the recent rash of injuries, we’re in better shape than we were at this time last year. And that team only started the year 11-1 while playing one of the most hellacious regular season schedules in memory. I guess you could say that I still like our chances.

This is worth a read, guys

This is from our old pal George Wrighster, whom the Giants released over the summer. He is still blogging away, and this piece is worth a few minutes of your time.

I thought it was just spam

but that’s a really fun blog. I definitely recommend reading the entire front page.

Seems to be a league-wide problem this year..

There is not one team in the NFL this year that can boast 100% health..but we are fortunate in that every player that steps in has played great. These injuries, even though we hate to hear about them may be a blessing in disguise because young guys / back-ups are getting valuable playing time. It will make us stronger during the playoff run. Some of our guys should be coming back soon (i.e. Ross, Ware)..Kehl’s injury shouldn’t keep him out very long and we’re lucky that Boley’s knee is only a four week deal..Right now my biggest concern is Eli’s heel injury..if that worsens we are in deep trouble.

by Bobbiblue on Oct 7, 2009 2:56 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Injury report

WIll it not be quicker to list the players who are not injured?

So we lose two LB in one week so that makes Blacburn and WIlko the default starter and backup for Boley.

Is D Clark still playing as I do not hear his name mentioned anymore in any posts?

by G Fan in England on Oct 7, 2009 4:44 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

The reason you don't hear his name

is because he does nothing out there.

by brisulph on Oct 7, 2009 7:51 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

there's a reason he's out there over some one else.

Occupying blockers and allowing guys like Pierce and Boley and teh safeties to make a play…kind important too.

Danny Clark is solid. Always said that, always will. They don’t keep him out there for nothing.
