Giants 27, Chiefs 16: Ho-hum, another easy win

Sunday's 27-16 victory by our 4-0 New York Giants over the 0-4 Kansas City Chiefs makes two weeks in a row now that the Giants have not really been threatened.

To tell you how lopsided this game really was, the folks at Arrowhead Pride were left cheering the 'great' fourth-quarter garbage-time performance by their Chiefs.

I would have preferred to see the Giants finish a tad stronger, but the fourth quarter was pretty meaningless. The Giants dominated all the meaningful portions of the game, as they should have. So, the victory express just keeps rolling.

I will be back in the morning with the traditional 'Kudos & Wet Willies.' By the way, that Steve Smith guy is pretty good, eh!

I can see it now

Wet Willie for Tynes as he misses for the third game in a row.

I don’t think Carr’s stat line for the game is very good.

Kudos for Smith, Manning and Nicks who made his one catch count.

great win for us needless to say the game was never as close as the score indicated however im really worried about elis ankle. hope all is ok with him cause carr just looks uncomfortable

he looked great in the preseason

and now he’s playing himself out of the money for next season somewhere else… He’ll still go somewhere though… QB shortage in this league

You play to win the game!

#1 concern....

is Eli OK.

Nice win. Goose is still sort of right on Jacobs, tho while the last game it was more 50/50 tentative runs, this time it was more like 75/25. Jacobs is just fine. Bradshaw too.

Steve Smith may just set all kinds of records for a Gints WR this year. You’d think people would start gameplanning for him however at somepoint, so it should be interesting to see if he keeps this pace up.

D looks incredible like usual. Nice to get sacks to get on the board, but anyone who’s been watching knows they’ve been close. Fred Robbins is making me say Canty-who? already. #91 looked like #92 alot out there too, nice to see he’s pretty much back to speed.

Im sure Tynes will get killed in this thread, but whatever. FG kickers, especially ones coming back from an injury, are gonna miss kicks. He made 2/3. Whatever.

Love how the secondary looked even better with Dockery back there. Bruce Johnson is a steal ( From..THA U!), Webster made his one requisite bad play, that’s it, and TT looked great and makes Ross not being there OK (but I hope he returns at some point.

Random Question

Do NFL teams release a weekly depth chart to the media? I can never find an up-to-date one.

by skyjo on Oct 4, 2009 6:26 PM EDT reply actions

I think the fourth quarter

shows how much the lack of an effective quarterback can have a cascading effect on the rest of the team.

My new nickname for our #1 receiver is Steve “Always Open” Smith. That dude is… Always. Open.

by rzor on Oct 4, 2009 6:39 PM EDT reply actions

how about "7-11"

because, like 7-11, he’s “always open”

Originally, 7-11 meant they were open

In fairness

The offensive line didn’t give Carr any protection at all and the ground game wasn’t working either.

4-0

The G-men look good and have been playing outstanding football considering there were 18 players listed on the injury report today who were either banged up or on IR.

I’m very excited about our team this year. Hopefully, Eli Manning is OK and can continue to push his Iron Man streak to 76!

Finally put it to it rest

I think we can finally put the question of our WRs to rest.

By the way how about that catch and run by Nicks?

by John W on Oct 4, 2009 6:42 PM EDT reply actions

yea...

I didn’t think he was healthy enough to actually play until that one, but yea…he’s healthy.

I don’t know if it was the fact that Eli and HAM aren’t on the same page, like the announcers kept trying to instill.

They were on teh same page for the 1st three games. HAM had a bad game, tho most of those throws were pretty bad balls by Eli, tho very much catchable for HAM.

Most definitely a nice trio we’re developing, only gonna get better once Hixon is thrown back into the rotation. I still see Hagan before I see Ramses (who was out anyway as a healthy scratch), so who knows on him.

Also the TE’s in Becks and Boss are a nice tandem. Id assume he’s gonna get work more too.

I know a lot of people including myself want more throws to Boss, but that is simply not a main option in Coughlin and Gilbride’s offense. They’ll get him involved, but no where near Shockey with Fassel when they were here.

Oh…Steve Smith is good. Kinda wish that the action of catching a football wouldn’t trigger his legs to give out from underneath him, but he’s still good at catching the ball.

Eli

did his best to try and gimme a fuckin heart attack when I saw him go down…and I’m so excited about our recievers. Eli needs to stop throwing behind manningham. I guess he gets out of his breaks way too fast. So when they finally do get on the same page, our recieving core is going to be even more dangerous…I know the goal is the super bowl and not accolades, but we might have a couple of pro bowlers in Eli and Smith.

4-0

is 4-0, but is anyone else surprised at just how easy this opening schedule is? Washington, Tampa, Kansas City, and next week Oakland in the first 5 games – it’s about time the schedule-makers gave the Giants a break.

Then after finally getting back home next week we go back on the road to face the high flying Saints. We needed these games, it’s about to get a whole lot rockier.

And that includes the one at Minnesota in the final week of the regular season last year where the Giants didn’t play their starters in the second half.

by brisulph on Oct 5, 2009 7:38 AM EDT up reply actions

That's what I meant

I’m well aware at how impressive our road record is, but we’ll have some serious contests coming. After NO, it’s the Cards on Sunday night, the never-easy Eagles, and Chargers before we get our bye. And I know it’s very early, but this isn’t likely to change: we only play 2 teams w/ losing records after that point.

by YankeeDudeL on Oct 5, 2009 1:44 PM EDT up reply actions

I love Steve Smith

This was a good win. The fourth quarter was pretty terrible (4th down conversions are the worst), but I think if Eli was still out there we pick up a few first downs and milk the clock, so I’m not too worried. Just gotta hope Eli’s fine by next week.

After the game I was at a grocery store and an Eagles fan came up to me and said “Go Eagles…but I think your team is gonna steamroll everyone this year. Damn you guys look good.”

I love being a Giants fan in 2009

Looking ahead to New Orleans?

The Eagles were off this week, so I had the chance to watch the Giants. I was very impressed with your team. I know the Giants have been good for quite some time now, but Eli looked simply unstoppable. It looks like they’ll walk all over Oakland next week. And that leads me to my question:

Do you think the Giants will be resting some starters against the Raiders in preparation for the big match-up against New Orleans on Oct. 18? I’m asking because (as I understand it), the Giants have a few injuries already that might make them hesitant to let some guys aggravate their injuries on the field against Oakland.

by Tamago3 on Oct 4, 2009 7:30 PM EDT reply actions

I doubt it.

The Raiders suck, but there is no way you rest starters in week 5.

The only one I’d think that might have a chance of that is Eli, cuz of the injury. Even so, he’s always been a tough bastard and he’ll want to play and probably will.

As for the guys who are still injured like Sintim, Canty and Ross, I hope they play simply to get some game action. The Raiders are about as good a practice game as any regular season game can get, so I hope everyone plays.

I read an article last week, probably linked from this site

where Bradshaw talked about making his cuts on the sides of his feet. I thought it might feel that way to him, but…no way. Today on one play there was a front shot of him hiitng and going through a hole, juking and cutting. I swear that all the time (i.e. the split seconds it took for him to hit the hole and go through it) he was going full speed on the sides of his feet. Did anyone else see what I think I saw?
Boley looks great.
Nice snag by Becks
Nicks looked great on his TD. It’s might be hard for Hix to reclaim his starting spot.
I think Moose might have a point about the chemistry between Eli and Mario being not quite all there yet. Mario’s ability to blow past his cover untouched is remarkable. Hix seems to always have to absorb a blow before he travels five yards.

by blue gonz on Oct 4, 2009 7:49 PM EDT reply actions

It has to be a one game thing,

cuz I doubt anyone who saw the Dallas game though Eli and HAM had any chemistry issues that game.

Eli threw a few bad balls to Smith too.

Eli’s not perfect, no QB ever really is. I think Moose and Goose really overanalyze the Giants and only take into account the game they are seeing.

He might have had some issues for this game, but its the only game the ‘chemistry issues’ as well as some suspect hands/awareness for HAM and even Nicks on one play showed up.

What the f$%k is the internet?

by FreeBradshaw on Oct 4, 2009 8:27 PM EDT up reply actions

I dunno

Manningham was covered very tightly quite a bit of the time. He’s obviously still learning, and today was part of the learning curve. If Eli’s passes had been a little crisper, he might have had an ok day.

by Tucker Fredrickson on Oct 4, 2009 9:42 PM EDT up reply actions

When Hixon Comes Back

He shouldn’t start at WR not only because of Manningham and Nicks, but also because we need him on special teams. We NEED to get Sinorice Moss off of punt returns. He lets too many punts hit the ground, and you only need to get a pinky on him to make the tackle.

by Be Driven on Oct 5, 2009 6:44 AM EDT up reply actions

agree...

but Hixon is not a bad WR, much better than Sinorice obviously, simply to just give a different look to the defense, or even to give HAM or SWISS a break.

Stram-BOLEY!

How about Michael Boley. It seemed like he was in on every play today. He was awesome along with Smith. Now I think Manningham should’ve caught three of the balls he dropped today. Now I think he caught the one that was challenged but the other two seemed like they were right at his chest.

I honestly felt Ham just had bad hands today...

The one pass was obviously behind, but you still have to make that catch.
On the big play down the sideline he had, that was right in his basket, and he didn’t initially make the catch there…but adjusted and made a big play. Hopefully it won’t go any further than this week.

I totally agree

Both his early misses were completely catchable, just happened to be on his back shoulder. You see receivers make that catch all the time. And if he hadn’t bobbled that perfect long throw it would have been a touchdown. But he sure has great concentration in situations like that.

It was a little sloppy out there

But I’ll take the win..I hope Eli is okay.. a heel injury took Simms out..but Eli seemed to be walking around okay, so hopefully nothing serious..Carr looked awful..Early on this season I thought he’d be starting somewhere next season..but now I don’t know. The score was deceiving though..We did control the game throughout.

Our recievers..

Smith looks like the real deal..Today however It looked to me like Manningham forgot to bring his hands to the game with him..ouch!..He seemed today like he couldn’t catch a soccer ball out there from ten feet away. He is obviously still in a learning curve. He shows signs of potential greatness, then signs that he can’t be there when needed…My High School coach had a great line: “Hit you in a bad spot…Your f-ing hands!!!!!!!!”

by Bobbiblue on Oct 4, 2009 10:33 PM EDT reply actions

Ham just needs to settle down a little

The guy is a hell of a runner and he’s got a pretty good head for the game. He just seems a little keyed up. He was ahead of a lot of balls and seemed to be trying to run before he made the catch. Sullivan just needs to spend a little time with him on making his play more fluid, getting Ham to seperate the catch from the run. Once that happens, that guy’s gonna be huge!

Loving these practice games, but...

…I can’t wait to take on New Orleans! That’s going to be the biggest test in the first half of the season. Of course, I’m pretty sure we’re going to destroy them, and that will be pretty damn satisfying. Not quite as satisfying as beating Dallas on their home opener in the new Jones Masoleum, mind you. I still fall asleep grinning about that one.

In other matters, stop ripping on Tynes! Any man who can consistently kick 40+ yarders in the Meadowlands (swirling winds, anyone?) can be spotted a miss or two in lopsided games that don’t matter. Honestly, people, are we Philly or Dallas fans? Are we going to bust on our players for every little mistake? Give the guy a break. Believe me, his misses are probably bugging him a lot more than they bug you all.

Anyway, GO BLUE!

re: Tynes

With my wife watching the Pats in the other room, I walked in to see the Pats’ punter lose one into the end zone for a touchback when he was kicking from midfield. Earlier, I’d been saying after Tynes’ miss how lucky they were to have 2 straight money placekickers. After they were ripping their punter, I thought, well, they’ve got a great kicker, we’ve got a great punter. I guess one of 2 ain’t bad.

You play to win the game!

Super Mario's Going To Be Alright

I think you guys are overreacting about super mario. It’s clear that he and Eli have a timing issue, manningham gets in and out of his breaks as fast as any receiver I’ve seen and it’s a matter of Eli figuring out just when to deliver the ball, and does anyone notice that manningham is having trouble with those deep side line routes.

It’s because his hands are positioned a little too far apart when he extends them and he’s not picking up the ball right away when it’s passed so he’s miss judging it’s distance. All this can be correted with a little more practice.
