Which Cardinals' player not named Larry Fitzgerald would you like to have?
In my chat earlier today with Charles Golden from 'Revenge of the Birds' I remembered to squeeze in my 'which player would you take off the Giants roster' question.
I was hoping Charles would reciprocate, because I have some thoughts about which Cardinals could help the Giants the most. He didn't, though, so I will toss the question out to you guys.
There is a caveat, though. Let's forget about Larry Fitzgerald, Anquan Boldin, Kurt Warner and the high-flying Arizona offense. Currently, the issues the Giants have are on defense. I think there are a few Cardinals players who could fit with the Giants, so let's discuss them.
Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie, CB
First-round pick by Arizona last season, he has six interceptions in his first 21 games. Looks to me like a guy who is turning into the player we all hoped Aaron Ross would be. Rodgers-Cromartie sure would look nice at corner, maybe allowing Terrell Thomas to go play safety.
Antrel Rolle, S
A converted corner in his fifth season in the league, Rolle is still only 26. How does this scouting report, from Rolle's SB Nation player page, sound to you?
A converted cornerback with exceptional cover skills. Has great range when playing safety. Can be effective in man or zone coverage. Has great hands and can run with the ball. A good enough tackler to play free safety.
Umm, I think that sounds like a guy who would be a huge upgrade over 'Bad, Bad C.C. Brown' and Aaron Rouse.
Karlos Dansby, LB
Dansby's name was bandied about here during the off-season when it looked like he might be a free agent. He had 117 tackles in 2007 and 143 last season. He is a far more athletic outside linebacker than Danny Clark or Chase Blackburn. There are questions about whether or not he could be effective in a 4-3, but I wouldn't mind finding out.
Neil Rackers, PK
Yeah, I know, not a defender. But, c'mon, the 10-year veteran is one of the best kickers in the league. I think we would all take him before Lawrence Tynes.
Here are a couple of Rackers' facts for you.
- Has not missed a field goal inside 30 yards since 2001.
- Is 14-for-16 between 40 and 49 yards the past three seasons.
- Has at least one field goal of 50+ yards in 5 straight seasons.
So, anyone on this list you guys would love to plug into the Giants' lineup? Anyone else on that defense you might be interested in?

I guess you weren't watching the Colts-Card game?
Yeah its unfair since its Peyton and all, but he was getting wrecked by the colts.
Maybe he’s shaped up since then, but I wouldn’t take him “in a heartbeat”
I know
a lot of us will say Rolle so we can be put out of our BBCC Brown misery. But I’ll take a page from JR’s draft book and pick the best talent, which according to your reviews looks to be Cromartie. Young, lots of potential, already producing as a rookie.
That would stack us at CB (when Ross is healthy) and probably allow us to take care of the safety problem as well by moving a CB there. Most posters here have picked TT to switch to safety. That would be intersting.
Rolle
cromartie is a very good CB but I take Rolle w/out even thinking twice.
"If you don't know what you're doing... just rush the quarterback" - LT
In order of preference
1- Karlos Dansby – We need a playmaking LB, we really don’t have one.
2-Rolle
3-Cromartie
Dansby
Also for what it’s worth there is a segment of Cardinals fans who think Dansby would be even better as an OLB even in a 3-4 defense. He’s a very good pass rusher and actually isn’t the ‘thumper’ that you’d expect from an 3-4 ILB. One of his best seasons, 2006 when he played in 14 games, he ended up with 80 tackles and 8 sacks in the Cardinals 4-3 defense.
If he ends up in a 4-3 defense next season, because he won’t be a Cardinal, I think he could be one of the very best OLB’s.
Be careful....to a hammer, everything looks like a nail.
Rolle or Dansby
Rolle is a total stud and is rangy – not to mention that he would shore up the D backfield.
Dansby is athletic enough to blitz and cover guys like Westbrook out of the backfield.
I guess you dont appreciate your players when you have them
We usually don’t give Rolle enough credit. Maybe he deserves more now that I look at it.
Hey, hey, hey hey hey, watch the language, ok? I have a family.
Revenge of the Birds
No mention of Adrian Wilson?
I’d say outside of Fitz, he’s probably the best player on the team or at least the biggest leader. His age may disqualify him but he’s miles better than Rolle.
For what it’s worth Rolle hasn’t exactly excelled as a FS.
- Is he amazing with the ball in his hands on picks and/fumbles? Absolutely. On plays like that maybe only Ed Reed is better.
- Is he an amazing athlete who can cover tons of ground? Absolutely. He’s fast, quick and would still blow scouts away in a “combine” atmosphere.
Outside of being a great athlete and having tremendous instincts with the ball though, Rolle is a maddening player to watch. He’s a decent tackler when he wants to be, he’s got the ball skills to get his share of picks and at times he seems to understand exactly what his role is in the defense. So what’s the problem? Even after five seasons in the league he’s terribly inconsistent. Let’s not forget that he lost his starting cornerback job to a guy who the Cards, Dolphins and Niners have released/cut since the end of last season. He was so successful at free safety last year that the Cards used a third round pick on Rashad Johnson (FS from Alabama) and at the midway point last year he was named the most disappointing player on the roster by ROTB. He too often misses tackles when going for the big hit, takes bad angles, bites on play action and allows WRs to get behind him which is a big reason why no defense allowed more big plays in the passing game than the Arizona Cardinals. I guess the bottom line is that while Rolle still has a decent stat line and compiles a good highlight film, he’s one of those guys who doesn’t live up to the hype.
I don’t mean to rake a guy over the coals but Rolle doesn’t deserve to be mentioned among the best players on our team. There’s even a thought out there that he’ll be asked to restructure his contract in the off season or be cut.
Be careful....to a hammer, everything looks like a nail.
No question
Adrian Wilson is definitely the Cards best defensive player AND he is what we need the most.
I also agree that Rolle hasn’t lived up to his draft hype.
Ah the grass is always greener on the other side.
I think the majority of their points is that he would be a huge improvement over CC Brown.
And I was just about to mention Adrian Wilson. This just proves how underrated the guy is. He’s a beast and I’m glad we have him locked up through the remainder of his career.

Karlos Dansby ...
would be a huge improvement over CC Brown … at safety !
Missed Rackers best attributes
There is no one with a more beautiful on sides, squib, or pooch kick in the league. This year alone recovering his own on sides kick and a successful pooch kick recovered last week in Seattle. He also had the most ST tackles last year (some resulting from necessity, but a lot down field too).
IKf you want up side DRC is your man. He has been picked so far this year and for good reason…he is getting burned. It’s my belief that teams have been watching film from last year and recognized that he plays off his receiver trying to instigate a turn over and has been exploited for it (over confidence). There is no one on the field with more athleticism or raw talent, but he is a second year corner (nuff said). He will be a shut down corner one day.
Most Cardinals fans see Rolle as kind of a bust. Eighth overall in 2005, he has done close to enough to earn that payday. He wasn’t the best corner so they moved him to free safety and some are saying he is still adjusting to the positon but having been in the league this long and not having formed an identity at this point, you have to wonder if he ever will.
Rackers is the man.
I was just about to mention that he’s not afraid to tackle. He’ll leap in a pile despite the possibility of getting injured. I’d hate to rain on the parade but he has his moments where he let’s us down. He had some heart breakers for us, namely the Monday night game against the Bears three years ago. I nearly threw my shoe through the TV. He’s been very good the last couple years though.

Can we say he was public enemy number one that year?

great question ed!!!!
although its nice to have rolle or dansby. i go with a player that would dig his hands in the dirt, has a nasty nasty demenior and demands double team everytime he gets on the field which will open up for our dominating ends, not to mention stuff the run . his name is darnell dockett. who wouldent want a 6’4 280 pounder as a DT in your team. have you guys tooken a look at our DTs latley? they show no threat in the field. everything starts up front fellas. pressure= easy pickins for our safetys and cornerbacks. it all starts at the DT. darnell dockett is durible and plays at least 80%percent of the snaps. thats great for defense tackle with his calliber. do i have any takers?

Dockett's a good choice too
Your DL is pretty strong already but Dockett would make them an amazing front four. He’s a Pro Bowl caliber DT who would thrive in the spot light of New York.
Be careful....to a hammer, everything looks like a nail.
Yeah Dockett would be my choice
He’s going to the pro bowl this year. After the Super Bowl, everyone knows who he is.

if we had a dominate DT and our line is putting pressure all of our secondary would make it to the probowl. cc brown would look like KP out there

McKenzie is who many consider the "weak" spot
He’s still hell of a lot better than most RTs.
He’s the oldest starting OL member also, so we’ll see how many more years we can squeeze out of him before we start (i presume) Beatty (our current rookie tackle)

I think i'd go DR-C
but I found it interesting that you wouldn’t let us choose Warner. Would anyone here really pick Kurt Warner if you could just pick 1 player to have? The guy is great, dont get me wrong, but we had him. We let him go for Eli. I dont think anybody regrets that decision (well, maybe the guy that wanted David Carr starting this season…).
In all fairness I think Warner understood when we picked him up that
He needed to get rid of the ball quicker. We benched him for Leinart and once that happened, he had a noticably quicker release, and has had a good three seasons since then. He also started wearing gloves when he joined us, which help a ton to keep him from fumbling all the time.
Hey, hey, hey hey hey, watch the language, ok? I have a family.
Revenge of the Birds
I'm not bashing on Warner at all
he’s a great qb. I just cant imagine a single Giants fan saying that if they could have 1 Cradinals player, it’d be him.
Here's a little factoid I picked up on Rackers in less than two minutes of research.
Rackers had another crucial field-goal miss in Arizona’s 24-23 loss to Chicago on Monday. The Pro Bowler pushed a 41-yarder to the left with 53 seconds remaining that would have given the Cardinals the lead against the Bears. Last week, he missed a 51-yarder against Kansas City with no time remaining that would have sent the game into overtime.
I’ll give you 24 hours to find something like this on Tynes, but I’ll hint to you right now, you won’t.

Rodgers-Cromartie. Him and Webster would be a nice shut-down combo.

I normally shy away from defending Rackers but you're talking about games from 2006
Not that I’d put a kicker and a SB winning QB in the same class but I bet we could go back and find plenty of factoid’s like that with Eli’s name on them from a couple of years ago.
Be careful....to a hammer, everything looks like a nail.
My issue is not with Rackers.
I think he’s a fine Kicker.
My issue is with the majority of individuals on this blog who feel Tynes needs to be shown the door. I’m simply pointing out that Rackers (even though it was 2006) has had strings of bad games, that actually cost his team wins.
Tynes on the other hand, has made a number of crucial kicks to win games, has never single-footedly cost us a game, and his string of bad games came with missed kicks that had no real bearing on the outcome.
A comparison to Eli is really unjustified here, as this was more used to prove a point that even Pro Bowl caliber kickers will hit a snag every now and again…much like Tynes did earlier this season.

I was at that Kansas City game
I thought he made the kick. Much to my surprise, I was the only one cheering and everyone was looking at me like I was stupid. Thanks Rackers…sigh.

Revenge of the Birds
Rodgers-Cromartie as well...
With Ross being out indefinately and KP being questionable next year and beyond,, it’s the defensive backfield that’s the weakest part of the defense (assuming people play to potential) and I’d go with the youth, versitility and athletic ability. Also gets Old Hickory (Brown) off the “to be smoked list” immediately.
No Adrian Wilson?
That was the first name that popped into my head when I saw this post. I think his reputation is more of a big-hit safety than a cover safety, but he’s a two time pro-bowler at our biggest position of need. He’d probably be my choice – him or DR-C

See
Now right there is my lack of full knowledge of the Cards’ roster. I focus so intently on ‘my’ team(s) I don’t always have full understanding of the other teams. Which is why I asked the question.

Yeah like I said, I was surprised he wasn't mentioned at first.
That happens with him though..he goes unnoticed. He’s a big time hitter, but can also blitz like the best and he’s pretty good in coverage. He’s the size of a linebacker and will be a part of the 20/20 club soon. He has 19 sacks and 18 interceptions.

I'm late on this this discussion
But in no particular order, only by alphabetically, this is who i instantly thought of…
Dansby
Dockett
Rolle
Wilson …
Whether it’s pre injury or not, it is hard to choose from these guys. Implementing them with who we have would give us alot of flexibility!
Dansby, though listed as an ILB could either kick AP out to SLB, or vice versa.
Dockett, listed as an DE, i beleieve he’s played DT before, (though undersized, perhaps in that role) could or would fit nicely in a nice rotation with Tuck and Co.?!
Rolle, well, if he’s a playmaker “on the ball”, then that by default makes “Bad, bad, C.C….” expendable.
Wilson, he’s a SS, but given the Giants usage of their’s (S’s), it’s more of an alignment thing than more of the traditional sense! Plus, he could also be used as the nickel LB! Blitz, cover etc… plethora of ideas!
Overall, we couldn’t go wrong with any of these guy’s. But, as much as we take for granted of what some teams may have, or lost, like Sean Taylor. I would also like to include Pat Tillman! I would take either one, period! RIP fellas!
And to gracious Cards fans, good luck guys.
Dansby, Ducket,
or Antrelle Rolle.
I know Rolle can get torched at times, but in the Giants system there isn’t really much responsibility for the safeties (at least from what I heard)…hence signing CC Brown…
Rolle would be a KP light.

Oh...
Adrian Wilson.
WTF?
For some reason I thought he was among the whole Warner, Fitzgerald, BOldin…Wilson type off limits thing.
But Wilson. #1 would be my choice.
I see Kerry Rhodes play a lot (unfortunately…) and Wilson was doing what Rhodes did years ago and still does it.
Exactly what the Giants could use, a guy as big as Michael Boley, hits like Dawkins and covers the field and makes plays like KP did this year.

Gabe Watson - DT
He’s not on the level of Docket. But he’s young, and he’s huge, and I went to Michigan with him, and he was the MAN. One of the guys on the team that would be down to have a friendly conversation with anyone in the bar, or at Wendy’s or wherever. Real nice, friendly dude (for a 350 pounder!)… and he’s a good player, and is earning more and more time in Arizona.
I think his problem is Wendy's
The guy has struggled with his weight since he was drafted and isn’t living up to expectation. He has been ok this year, no stud though
No doubt
I always thought that in college too…. “Dude, what are you doing at Wendys?”
I wouldn’t call him a disappointment though. Dude is a 4th round pick who has contributed considerably. Can’t complain about that.
4th overall comes with high expectations.
Ask any Cards fan and i think it would be a unanimous that he hasn’t been the dominant anchor he was drafted to be.
Watsons solid as a DT, and huge
He has the ability to play real good. I guess we’ll just have to wait and see.

Adrian Wilson?
It has to be Adrian Wilson. Best player on the Cards defense (Dockett is a close 2nd), and probably the 2nd best strong safety in the league behind Troy Polamalu. If we were somehow able to get him on our team you would never hear CC Browns name again.

Sorry fellas, didn't mean for this comment to be soo long
Here’s my thinking. If I had to start a team from scratch tomorrow and didn’t have any players, i’d go with Adrian Wilson, any day. That dude is like some of the cardinals fans on here have been saying underrated, under the radar, but tough as nails. he’s built like a mini Tuck (that boy got guns!) and he’s there best D player if you ask me.
I however, would have to eliminate him for the purposes of this conversation, not because of his age, but because of his incumbent(KP). Wilson would be a band aid for this season, but going forward, he would be wasted as KP’s backup (or vice versa). so he’s eliminated. Still the baddest mofo named Adrian.
Next is DRCromartie. Before i give you my personal opinion on him, just a few stats i found on profootballfocus.com. This is based on there metric system(for DB’s getting at least 60% of team snaps):
- he’s ranked number 31st overall. Corey Webster is ranked 11th.
- in pass coverage he’s ranked 27th
- 36th in run D
- he’s thrown at 3rd most times in the league(one behind AZ’s other corner) but surprisingly only 20th in pct. completed[56.1], which is pretty good considering how many times he’s thrown at.
now my personal feelings on him: i wouldn’t take him, FIRST, off this team. i’ve seen him get burned alot from my own memory, metrics aside. that said, he’s young, so if you think he can grow with all our other young talent, then that would be his upside. i’ll pass.
same site, this time on Antrel Rolle. Pluses:
- second in pass rushing(safeties only)
- tied for 1st in sacks
- tied for 2nd in QB hits
- tied for 3rd in INT’s
Minuses:
- 32nd overall rating
- 36th in pass coverage
- 37th in run D
- tied for 3rd in missed tackles
- 4th most in avg. yards per comp. given up
An upgrade over what we have but i’m not taking him.
i’m taking Karlos D. In the prime of his career(28 y.o.), ranked 9th overall by the same site/chart, 8th in pass rushing, 3rd in pass coverage, tied for 9th in QB pressures, 2nd in LEAST amount of missed tackles, and 7th in YAC. He would shore up the SAM backer, boley could play weakside, with AP quarterbacking the trio. it would address our immediate need of a standout backer, for now and years to come.
KARLOS DANSBY IS MY CHOICE!!! THANK YOU AND GOODNIGHT!!!!!
Why would KP and Wilson not play together?
It’s better to keep Johnson out there then have one of the other two play?

i thought about that
but one of the two would have to switch to free safety, which i don’t think either one truly is. there hitters, sure tacklers who also yes can defend the pass. i just don’t like switching one to another position which he may be weaker in.
and i think theres a bigger need at linebacker…for the years to come, not just this season.
missed one
Adrian Wilson is a beast. His worth to this defense and team is just as valuable as Fitz, Warner or Boldin. He recognizes run plays and immediately turns into an extra run blocker. Watch him fly around the field Sunday night and stuff whoever gets the pigskin from Eli “Daddy told me to” Manning.
Frankly
I wouldn’t take any of their players.
Bobbi
A bit harsh – some of their players would be an upgrade on what we have in particular Dockett, Dansby and Wilson would be the first three names I would put on a list without even looking at their roster.
After all the Cardinals have been to the Superbowl more recently than we have and were only one play away from winning – so they are a good team and deserve our respect.

Don't get me wrong G..
I have the utmost respect for the Cardinals..I just feel we need to solve our issues from within versus dream about getting guys we never will be able to get..They are a very good team.
Actually,
Dansby is the only player on this list that will be up for grabs next year. This is his third season with the franchise tag and openly stated that he was not making any deals this last off season and is waiting to see what his value will be in this upcoming uncapped year. So if you own a 2002 Mercedes, you might want to but an aging overpriced LB too…So it may not be so much a dream as an option.
Umm..
I don’t want any players on their defense. Sorry. You’re talking the best WR in the game. Verse guys that might be just good but not great. Bad question.
Adrian Wilson and Darnell Dockett are probably top 5 at their positions
With Dansby a top 10 linebacker. I wouldn’t call them just “good”. But that’s your opinion.
Hey, hey, hey hey hey, watch the language, ok? I have a family.
Revenge of the Birds
Why is it a bad question?
Obviously, Fitzgerald is the best player and the guy you would take first. We all know that. It’s why he was excluded from the conversation. I wanted to know who else people would take, especially to shore up the defense.
