Ask Revenge of the Birds

Hello Big Blue View, Andrew from Revenge Of The Birds here to answer any questions you might have about the Arizona Cardinals and our upcoming game this Sunday night. This season hasn't been easy but we've bounced back after getting killed by the other Manning and we're now 3-2. Feel free to ask as much questions as you have and I'll answer them as quickly as possible. Also, if somebody here could do the same at our site, I know some of the guys have some questions. Thanks.

I feel

Like the Giants need to come out and gameplan to stop the pass. How is your running attack looked so far with Hightower and that 1st round pick? I think it was Beanie Wells. After getting lit up by the Saints do you think that the Cards will do the same after we make some adjustments? Also the Cards haven’t fared well on the East Coast games, any reason for that.

I wouldn't call it a rushing attack. More like an attempt at rushing.

Our line hasn’t been able to open up enough holes, and Wells still has a lot to learn. Wells has shown flashes of being a really good back, but then has fumbled a few times. The coaches say he’s too fast and doesn’t wait for the runs to develop.

I think the Cardinals will definately try to copy the Saints attack. We’re obviously a passing team so whatever we could do what the Saints did, I think it will help.

The Cardinals haven’t been good on the road for two reasons. The early wake up call is the bigger reason, then bad weather if there is any. The Cardinals are 2-0 on the road however, and our game is at night, which should help.

Welcome aboard Andrew.

How bout that #1 ranked run defense of yours? Legit?

to add on

what’s with the discrepancy between the run defense and the pass defense (ranked #31)?

@ cjmulrain

The pass defense struggled the most against Indy, but who’s hasn’t? Other then that, it can be blamed primarly on two things. The good run defense has forced opponents to pass more, and teams have fell behind quickly in most games, forcing teams to air it out to catch up. That really can’t be an excuse but it’s the truth. I think we got ahead of ourselves a coulple games and gave up leads in the second half as well. Last week, the pass D focused and didn’t allow much from the Seahawks.

Our run defense is good but

That stat can be skewed a bit. Against the 49ers I’ll give them credit, because they pounded the ball with Frank Gore and he went nowhere all game. The Jags tried early and went nowhere, but had to abandon to catch up. The Colts just aren’t a good rushing team. The Texans couldn’t run much, and had to abandon early. Then the Seahawks, who fell behind early, very quick. They never had a chance to run, but then again, they didn’t do anything. I think if we slow your running backs, that will be the biggest test to our run D.

They're still climbing back.

The loss of Todd Haley really hurt this team, but their just now getting into rhythem with Ken Whisenhunt calling the plays. The defense also took a while to adjust to new D coordinator Billy Davis, but I think they’re coming around too.

There really hasn't been enough consistency on either side of the ball to answer that question difinitively.

Then again there wasn’t consistency throughout the whole of the regular season last year either. Our defense will look stout against any team with a suspect o-line and a qb who can win games. So I think you will fair pretty well. If our coaches can game plan around any week links on your o-line (are there any?) and we can get to manning our defense will go off.

If you were to offensively game plan against the Cardinals

What area would you attack on the Cardinals defense? What weaknesses have been exposed in the early part of this season? Is it because of injuries or lack of execution vs. expectations?

by Hootman on Oct 21, 2009 3:04 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

The pass defense

If I were to gameplan against the Cardinals defese, I’d focus on the deep ball. The Cardinals led the league last year in deep balls allowed. They’ve been much better this year, but I think if Eli can throw it right and the receiver doesn’t drop the ball, the Giants can blow past our defenders. I’d also focus on the short/quick passes. Our linebackers aren’t that fast and a quick tight end could make us pay. Running back screens have also given us trouble, but teams don’t run them a lot against us oddly.

The obvious weaknesses that have been exposed are our weak running game, poor protection from our offensive tackles, and what I listed above.

Actually, we’re probably one of the most healthy teams in the league. We were last in the league last year in injuries and so far this year the only significant injury we’ve had is a freak-injury to rookie linebacker, Cody Brown’s wrist. He was lost for the season but thats about it. I think expectations caught this team off guard. They bought into them too much and weren’t focused. The loss of both our O and D coordinator caused the team to be out of sync through the first few games also.

Warning for Warner

Stay away from CC Brown, he is due for a 4 interception game, ok ok im kidding, but he will make tackles after he lets your receivers make the catch lol…Hoping for a good injury free game, good luck.

Is Beanie Wells alive?

also on the other end of that college rivalry…Those MEECHigan WR are pretty good right? Our own HAM..aka Mario Manningham has been a bit inconsistent, but every bit a reason why the Giants passing attack has done very well so far. We Giants fans are please with him..he did absolutely nothing his first season and somewhat of a surprise this year (somewhat..cuz the guy was a superstar at UM..he had this in him all along…)

When did Steve Breaston emerge as the threat he is now? Is he more of just a deep threat? Or is he an all around type like Fitzgerald?

Beanie – The Cardinals just don’t run the ball enough to allow two backs to accumulate any stats. The offensive line is playing terrible this season and running holes have been hard to find. He’s put the ball on the turf a couple of times and that certainly hasn’t boosted the staff’s faith in him but that doesn’t mean he’s not running well when he gets a chance. He missed so much time in camp and OTA’s that his knowledge of the playbook isn’t great but he’s getting a better handle on things and I think it’s just a matter of time before he takes over the starting role.

Breaston – Obviously emerged last season after what most called an amazing summer where he practically lived in the team facilities. He was primarily a deep specialist last year but he’s rounding out his game. He’s worked hard at improving his route running and his fearlessness as a punt and kick returner have proven that he can take a pretty good shot so he’s not afraid to come across the middle. With Q most likely out for this game, I’d keep a close eye on Breaston. In the four games that Q missed last year, Breaston topped 75 yards three times.

To elaborate on Breaston

I would call him the best third receiver in the league, and also the perfect addition to our dynamic duo. One of his main functions, as you said, would be the long threat. With him on the field defenses have no choice but to cover him and put Fitz and Q in one on one match ups. The bonus side is that his routes are improving (still not great) and his hands have proven to be as sure as they come (as far as third receivers go). Lastly, he has been making a lot of plays across the middle of the field with serious heat coming and finishing the plays.

you mean on the team right?

Not taking away anything from Breaston…but he’s not the third best WR in the NFL right?

Best third receiver. Not third best,

There is a pretty long list in front of him for that one.

Better than any third receiver in the league, yes.

Yeah Breastons the best

Third string receiver. However, he could be a 1 or 2 on some teams.

Here's a question that I'm pretty sure I asked last year

what’s the deal with Matt Leinart? Have the Cardinals completely given up on him as a potential starting QB, or is it just that Warner’s been so good that Leinart can’t force his way onto the field? Relatedly, how much longer do you think Warner will play?

No, he's still the future

I think Leinart could/can be a decent starting QB in this league although the offense would have to change some to accommodate his skills. He needs a decent running game to take pressure off of him so when he takes over I could see a more balanced offense. Hopefully that’s a year from now and the offensive line is better but we’ll see. Bottom line though Matt will be the starting QB of this team sometime in the future.

As far as Warner’s future, you’re guess is as good as mine. I could see him retiring if the season finishes either very good or very bad. If it’s somewhere in between I think he comes back and plays one more year.

Be careful....to a hammer, everything looks like a nail.

on that note

how has Leinart handled not playing? Has he been a good teammate, or have their been any rumblings that he’s unhappy?

He has been the epitome of a team player

He obviously desires to play but understands his roll well enough.

You said you would like to pick up a Giants O-Lineman

during your chat with Ed, so how do you think you’ll hold up against the struggling Giants pass rush?

It would save the Giants Defence a lot of time if QBs just stayed down!
