Positives to take away from the Saints game.

I know it might not seem like it right now, but there were some things I took as positives from this game. It was obvious from the beginning that in this game, everything that could possibly go right for the Saints would, and the Giants were gonna have to scratch and crawl for every inch. With the momentum garnered from this game. I think the Saints will be regular season champions, and you know what? I'm just fine with that. We don't play well with that moniker anyway.

Star-divide

You might feel ashamed, you might feel dejected, but do not feel defeated. Here are some things we can focus on while we get back on the horse and slap around Arizona this week.

1. It's week frickin' 6.

As far as week six games in the NFL go, this Giants v Saints game was indeed billed as a big one, but in the grand scheme of things, it wasn't even close. When I looked at the schedule at the start of the season, I said to myself "Wow. if we play solid Giants football we can get off to a 5-1 start." I said 5-1 because I honestly thought there was no way we'd beat Dallas in their house for the opening of Jerryworld.  But we did. I ask you now would you trade that win for a win against the Saints? I think not. If I asked you at the beginning of the year would you be happy with a 5-1 start with two divisional wins? You would say, "But of course." In other words, six weeks into the season, we're in really good shape, but I think most of us knew that already.

2. A crazy thought...byes help a  team.

One of the biggest things that we really did not put too much focus on is that the Giants are beat up, battered, tired, and have played four out of their last five games on the road. The Giants are definitely Road Warriors, they just happen to be human as well. I'd like to see how the Saints would fair if they just finished playing three out of four on the road and had to come into the Meadowlands to face a Giants team that had two weeks to prepare for them. I'd be willing to bet the Giants could make them look just as silly.

3. Hakeem Nicks

Steve Smith is becoming one of the best slot recievers in the game. Mario Manningham has already had one breakout game this season, and has proven to be a reliable target. But look at Hakeem Nicks...five receptions 114 yards and a touchdown. Garbage time or no garbage time, it's clear this kid can play. He's been a YAC machine, and even though it was too late for him to be a force in this game...it's still very early in the season, and it looks to me like he's going to be a big target that Eli can rely on for the long road ahead. One more headache for defensive coordinators to lose sleep over, Hakeem Nicks has been in the end zone every week he's been healthy, and there's no reason to believe he'll slow down. As the season progresses, so should his chemistry with Eli. And if Smith, Ham, and Nicks all continue to play at this level, this defense might not have to be so stellar...although a PASS RUSH WOULD BE NICE.

4. Brandon Jacobs.

I don't know if you guys were seeing the same thing I was, but based on the comments during the game, I think we can agree on one thing...we abadoned the run way to early. Isaw a Brandon Jacobs that was running like Brandon Jacobs. I know he only had seven attempts, but with the 4.7 yard average he gained on those attempts, I feel confident in saying that our boy is back. I kept thinking to myself that Jacobs has to be hungry for a big game, and this would have been it...had we stuck with the run. He hit the holes the way we're used to seeing him hit the holes, he moved piles back they way were used to seeing him move piles back, and given different circumstances, this more than likely would have been his breakout game. Next week the league's leading rushing defense comes to town, but I have a feeling Jacobs is going to have a big day. As long as we don't dig ourselves into a 14 point defecit before the end of the first quarter, I think Jacobs will feed off the home crowd and keep his momentum going forward, taking some Cardinals down on the way.

5. Madden

The most obvious positive to take away from this game is my pre-season Madden Simulation. Madden had the Giants losing to the Saints, after a 5-0 start, only to finish the season 12-4 (splitting with the Eagles and Redskins, sweeping the Cowboys, and losing to the Chargers.) gaining the second seed in the NFC and eventually a re-match with the Patriots in the Super Bowl (which I have yet to simulate). So far, so good, Madden. The Saints can take this one, but when they lose to the Cowboys in the Divisional round of the playoffs, we'll be laughing last.

Poll
After our week 6 performance, where do you see the Giants finishing this season?
12-4 (or better). We respond like the true Champions we are and nab the second seed. Just like Tito's Madden Simulation said.

11-5/10-6. The defense will continue to struggle, but Sheridan will figure it out just in the nick of time, getting us a tight Division Championship.
30 votes
9-7/8-8. There are far too many injuries on defense, but our offense will kep us in games...maybe a Wild Card.
6 votes
7-9 (or worse). This team is clearly a farce. We can't compete with anyone outside the AFC West. No playoffs.

Well I was on the ledge

but that Madden bit has me back inside the window.

Seriously though, points 1-4 seem pretty solid (Jacobs did indeed look good, as did Bradshaw). The Saints can be had with more running (clock control) and a better defensive effort, but that is a concern for other teams since we don’t meet them again this year (unless it is play-offs of course).

The thing I think was most frustrating...

Was how easily they took us out of our game. With the first series on offense we were already playing catchup…

Hopefully Tom learned a lot about this team, I have so much faith him though, I really think the Cardinals are going to be in for a rude awakening when they travel to East Rutherford.

They came on strong at the end there...

In typical Redskins fashion, they tore off four straight to end the season finishing 8-8, narrowly beat out by Dallas for the last Wild Card spot.

Can’t believe I didn’t remember that.

Someone needs to bone up on their 80's

WCW wrestler gimmicks. Well actually, don’t do that. It was a wrestling reference to the Road Warriors/Legion of Doom.

Animal

is actually the father of former Ohio State (and now Rams?) Linebacker James Laurinaitis. So I don’t think this will stick. Oh yes — in the 80s and early 90s, I was quite the WWF fan — Wrestlemania 1-6 was a great time to be a kid!

Looking at your schedule

Your Giants still have some tough games ahead, including Arizona, Denver, Minnesota, Atlanta, Philly (x2) and 1 very pissed off Dallas team. That said, I think the Giants end up at least 10-6, more likely 11-5, and take the division.

Playoffs are too far off to do any predicting of rematches – anything could happen between now and then. But I’d love to see the G-Men in the Superdome again.

by HB-NOLA on Oct 20, 2009 6:16 PM EDT reply actions

most def...

I’d be happy with 11-5…I’m sure you Saints would be too, given the situations in each of our divisions, 11-5 is getting in with the division crown.

As for the tough games…they all are tough ahead. People can say Washington and Carolina may be the easy spots, but Washington is a division game and East games are never easy. Carolina? I think they’ll turn it around and may play their best football at that point…never know.

Saints definitely look tough….at home. You’re gonna need that home field cuz the way you struggled AT BUFFALO, Saints definitely feel good playing in that dome.

Saints didn't struggle at Buffalo

It was just a different game plan. Saints rushed 38 times for 222 yards (5.8 ypc), and Buffalo had three snaps in Saints territory in the second half. They won by 20 points – that’s hardly struggling.

Considering the rest of the Saints schedule and trying to stay ahead of the Falcons, I might be a little disappointed if they end up 11-5. It might not be good enough to take the South, and almost certainly wouldn’t be good enough for home field through the playoffs.

by HB-NOLA on Oct 20, 2009 6:51 PM EDT up reply actions

it was 10-7 going into the 4th quarter.

HOW that is not struggling….I dunno.

Again, congrats on the win. But you will come back to earth at some point. How you respond (like what will the Giants do to respond this Sunday against AZ) tells who you are.

i highly doubt

the saints are going to lose that many games.
my bet is that they finish 15-1 or 14-2
as for the giants. id rather have them playing the best football at the end of the season and squeezing into the playoffs then for them to roll through the season and fold in the playoffs. its only week 6. this game means nothing. in this league with the injuries and game plans any given team can beat any given team in the right situation. playoffs are the only true measuring stick because that is when the elite teams and coaches are able to pull it all together.

In my Madden

Giants went 15-1 the first season, then in the 2nd season lost in week 4 to an undefeated Saints team. The Saints got out to 8-0 but finished the season 11-5, while the Giants rolled off 9 straight wins, before finishing the season 14-2. I’d take that…

I recorded the game

last night and I am going to watch it tonight.

I watched the first couple of minutes and I noticed right away, if the Giants got the ball first or made a stop on the first drive the whole complexion of the game would have been different. The Defense had chances to make stops but came up just short. Some 3rd and 3s and even longer 3rd and 6s….. The post to Hixon that almost connected and would have been a score.

This part of the reason I wanted to watch it again, I know there are positives to take away. The Giants are still a very good team and it is early yet….

nice to see Hix finally healthy.

I hope he stays that way.

I still think he’s a good option as a WR and should remain worked into that.

Tho, I did think he was used too much on Sunday…countless times did I see the ball being thrown to #87.

Being the “4th” WR..is not a bad thing.

Agreed

he is so dynamic in the return game….. I am so glad to see him back there doing what he does best. I like him as the 4th option but him as a #1 or 2 is an oversight.. remember that talk from the offseason and into camp

by GiantRB27 on Oct 21, 2009 9:41 PM EDT up reply actions

yea...

I thought he’d be the break out guy and the #1 too. I was way off on that.

I DO think he has the talent to be a #1 still, I just think he’s too injury prone and also a bit too much Devin Hester syndrome.

Talent is one thing, actually being it on the FB field..another.

Definitely better suited for the return game. He’s an EXCELLENT returner, always has been really.

When and if we play the Saints again

We hopefully have a healthy Boley, Sintim, Ross, Canty. Thats 4 starters on D. I would rather see Ross, CWeb, TT and M. Johnson and our nickel 5 Dockery who will playing better when he sees more game time. Thats four starters on D, or at least 3 pending SIntim/Canty in situational plays. Brees won’t have a Cant Cover Brown to expose. The Giants are a smart team and will learn from there mistakes. Lessons will be learned.

by wangstu13 on Oct 21, 2009 8:15 PM EDT reply actions

hixon is good

but id stop before i call our return game dangerous.
on most kickoffs we get to the 20-30
those that hixon delivers are 50yarders.
but i dont think itl be dangerous until hixon proves he can score the return. but i think that relies more on the blocking. our special teams blocking on returns isnt exactly the best.

by karamjitm9090 on Oct 22, 2009 12:15 AM EDT reply actions

Hixon

will break a big return and hopefully it will come at a much needed time… He seems to see the whole field very well back there and lets blocks develop…. I mean anything is better than Moss… That guy is terrible
