Giants vs. Saints: 'Kudos & Wet Willies' style preview

Let's preview Sunday's meeting between our 5-0 New York Giants and the 4-0 New Orleans Saints 'Kudos & Wet Willies' style.

There will be lots of 'Kudos' Monday if ....
  • The Giants run the football effectively. Keeping Drew Brees and the Saints offense off the field will be critical. A couple of long, time-consuming drives would be nice.
  • The Giants pressure Brees. We know how explosive (a league-leading 36 points per game) the Saints offense is. If Brees is well-protected the Giants have no chance of slowing New Orleans.
  • The Giants control New Orleans' running game. The Saints are, surprisingly, second in the league with 166 yards rushing per game. We know the Saints can throw as well as anyone. If they can also run, the Giants will give up a ton of points.
  • The Giants protect Eli Manning. If they do that, Eli should be able to continue the amazing season he is having.
There will be lots of 'Wet Willies' if ...
  • Darren Sharper again gets the best of Eli Manning. Sharper, the Saints safety, has made a career of picking off passes from Eli. That needs to change Sunday.
  • The Giants secondary gets exposed. The Giants are No. 1 in the league in pass defense, but that's largely because of the pitiful competition they have played. If Brees can take advantage of safeties like C.C. Brown and Aaron Rouse, or any Giants cornerback not named Corey Webster he could create some big plays for the Saints.
  • Jeremy Shockey has a big day. You know Shockey will be an emotional focal point. Weall know what he's like once he gets rolling, and we don't want to see it. Besides it would be fun to see Giants defenders separate Shockey from the football a couple of times.
  • Lawrence Tynes gets out-kicked by John Carney. I don't think I need to explain this one.

The Giants

Have absolutely got to pressure Brees, keep their offense off the field..Neither team has had much competion yet this season, but both have beaten NFL caliber teams..They were not defeating high school teams..So this is going to be a really good game between two very talented clubs..I can’t wait…I may very well need to blood pressure prescriptions after this one..

Carney and Tynes

As far as i’m concerned, Carney can out-kick Tynes all he wants. I’d be more than happy if all Tynes has to do is kick PAT’s. If we can keep the Saints TD’s to a minimum, Carney can kick all the FG’s he wants, of course not to exceed what the Giants score!

I thought

it was strange that he was thanking you when you hadn’t said anything.

It would save the Giants Defence a lot of time if QBs just stayed down!

Yes Hoot

So far we have owned time of posession, if we move the ball and keep their offense on the bench, we will have a rested defense and we’ll win the game.

For your sake

I hope we will win the TOP battle, 100% red zone efficiency and perhaps a strike or two outside it too! Nothing worse than having to resort to pill-popping! Though, in my case, can-popping and chain-smoking! lol

Kudos if...

the Taints play like they usually do out of a bye week.
we stop the run or at least keep it under 100 yards
jacobs and set the tone early, heck let bradshaw do it as long as one of the two does

Wet willies if…
our run defense gives up +100 yards
their D causes turnovers
tynes flubs a kick early, the GMen are going to need all the points they can get.

I think our D is very hungry for a challenge and will wear down their offense, and our O is in such an awesome rhythm they should march down the field and control the clock. I think Nicks and Osi have really good days. I think it will be close I say 24-17 Giants of course.

oops I crapped my pants!

see Tuck, Osi, Kiwi, and Sintim blowing snorts of smoke out of their nostrils tommorrow..If they can’t stop him then they might as well just put Brees in the HOF on Monday.

Bye weeks in general

Obviously, there is always a 50/50 chance of winning a game before kickoff. But, are bye weeks as beneficial as they may seem? You do have the opportunity to get injured players back, and to a degree, some extra prep time of what can be seen. Since 1990, teams are 309-276-1, a 52.7 winning percentage!

So really, the % that the Giants will lose is only 2.7% less. Now, factor in the earlyness of the Saints bye week, and who the Giants have played, what conclusions can the Saints make on what the Giants may like to do? The Giants have been so vanilla, that it makes vanilla blush!

It only takes a few scoops of this or that, to make this vanilla sundae, into a more enjoyable Sunday!

by Hootman on Oct 17, 2009 12:40 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah Hoot

I mentioned that yesterday..beyond hopefully being able hopefully get some players back, these byes can be momentum killers..I have never been a proponent of the two week lapse prior to the Super Bowl either..that just has never made sense to me. The atmoshpere leading to the big game is tough enough on players without throwing another week in there..In recent years we have seen players overwhelmed by the hoopla, some have gotten in trouble and there was one guy (I can’t think of his name) never showed up for the damn game!!..Plus those that do, many show up like Zombies..

by cntrlalt on Oct 17, 2009 6:56 PM EDT up reply actions

yea

i saw a story on si.com about him a few weeks ago, he’s apparently doing much better since then.

but it makes you wonder about the raiders, and how long they’ve really had these organization problems. according to barrett and his wife, the team didn’t call her until the morning of the superbowl to ask where he was, even though he had a history of lapses.

by cntrlalt on Oct 17, 2009 8:32 PM EDT up reply actions

Yep..I didn't see that article but

Glad to hear he is doing better..and yes your right..Al Davis has reached an age where he has actually lost it..Now they have the Cable issue to deal with…It is unbelievable!..The Giants would have dealt with Barrett’s problem a whole lot differently..The Staff and the owners would have found out about his depression way before a Super Bowl where it ultimately culminated and got him the proper care..Actually most teams would have..The Raiders are actually in the process of imploding..and it has been going on for years..and Davis is his own worst enemy..His old arrogance has reached just a grumpy old man point..I am certainly not a Raiders fan by any stretch..but you’d like to see a team competitive..They have alot of talent but no way to funnel it because of the constant controversy..They pick up a guy like Seymore from N.E. and all he said when asked about playing there, was:“Well the weather is nice”..None of their players have a staff with a plan they feel they can buy into. In recent years Davis has replaced good coaches with boobs..and it like a revolving door..no cohesiveness..Look at Washington..the players want a vote of confidence from Snyder concerning Zorn..They want to know who their coach will be for the season..That kind of question and wonderment plays hell with the players heads.

by Bobbiblue on Oct 17, 2009 10:27 PM EDT up reply actions

The reason i brought this up is pretty simple

Besides players recovering and coming back, what real advantage would the Saints have, with their bye week so early in the season? You could actually say the same for the Giants too though, minus the bye week. But it is the nature of what teams have shown to this point.

I was lucky enough to find the winning percentage of the entire NFL after bye weeks, but curiously though, what are the percentages earlier vs. later in the season for bye weeks?

by Hootman on Oct 17, 2009 8:26 PM EDT up reply actions

What did you find out Hoot..

My suspicion has been that the later season bye weeks are better than the early season byes as far as getting players back that suffered early injuries..Again, I really don’t like them..What do you guys think?..My feeling is an early bye crushes momentum versus a later bye could very well get some guys back in uniform..Is it fair to have these bye weeks peppered throughout the year at different times?

by Bobbiblue on Oct 17, 2009 10:35 PM EDT up reply actions

the saints WLB shanle said of the bye........

with all of the OTA’s and the 4 game preseason, that this is more like the half way point to him, sounded like bull to me,but that’s what he said.

but it did help us on the injury side, the saints weakest spot is at LT,with pro-bowler jamal brown on ir,and now starter bushrod having tweaked his knee and ankle we were down to the third string tackle

As with this whole season...

I want them to sack Brees. But if the merely just get there a step or 2 late and really pop him early on, its gonna take its toll.

Brees is another one of those tough SOB QB’s, like our #10, but as we’ve seen with any QB (maybe aside from Kurt Warner with teh Rams at his best and last year for the most part), you keep hitting him, he aint gonna be on his game and more prone to mistakes.

PT love

A lot of love is being shown towards the Saints running game, particularly Pierre Thomas. I understand that he’s a good RB but is our defense swiss cheese?? And if reports are true that Thomas has a hamstring issue and mike Bell plays, is Mike Bell good enough to do a lot of damage to our D on the ground?? I’m not buying it.

Another thing, this is the same Saints defense that gave up 28 points to the Detroit Lions. With our O-Line and running game I don’t think the Saints defense will get many, if any 3 and outs on us.

I respect the Saints but their offense can be shut down more than ours can.

Giants win 35-21.

by sexyscottish on Oct 17, 2009 12:56 PM EDT reply actions

You need to realize

Most of the yardage, and points given up to Detroit and to Philly was in garbage time, playing a Prevent D to cover the lead the Saints had.

A lot of people underestimate the Saints this year (no pun intended to any Giants fan) but it’s going to surprise you game-time when the Giants O can’t move the ball much without turnovers.

Yeah the Saints passing offense has been “slowed” down, but not because the defenses they faced shut them down. They ran the ball effectively to control the clock, and the game. Brees can light up anyone, anywhere. But why do that when you necessarily don’t need to as you have an established running game?

I think it’s going to be a hell of a game, but I do give the Saints an overall edge due to the home crowd..the Dome is gonna be louder than ever and i’m curious to see if Eli can concentrate there in that environment.

Goodluck :)

Geaux Saints!

by viper4dx on Oct 17, 2009 1:16 PM EDT up reply actions

Are you confusing the Giants for the Jets?

The Giants’ O-line is a whole lot better than the Jets’ and all of the others that the Saints have faced thus far. I would also argue that our receivers run great routes, and Eli will have lots of targets. Oh, and lastly, I think you will be (not so pleasantly) surprised by Eli’s poise.

by 2016: Eli for President on Oct 17, 2009 1:22 PM EDT up reply actions

OK, now this is what annoys me!
but it’s going to surprise you game-time when the Giants O can’t move the ball much without turnovers.

As much as i respect any fan, from any team, their opinion (within a fair arguement) etc… the word i despise most is “can’t”! Your team whatever “can’t” do this or that. As far as i’m concerned, averages per game don’t amount to anymore than perhaps a barometer of what “may” be expected! What i do expect though is that these averages will meet someplace, and have some common ground of what some may not expect!

Insinuating that a team “can’t” do this or that when they’re presumably atop of the world, seems a bit much. Surprisingly enough, whose to say that Eli “can’t” out-shine Brees, as an example? With all things considered, he “might”, be able to and the Giants O, “might” be able to. Not “can’t”!

by Hootman on Oct 17, 2009 2:20 PM EDT up reply actions

c'mon Hootman

everyone knew the Giants “couldn’t” beat the 18-0 Patriots…

"[The Giants] beat us down. We were beat by a grown-man team, a team we want to be like one day. They came in here and took it to us. Out-manned us, out-gunned us. ... It wasn't even close." - Raheem Morris, 9/27/09

by cjmulrain on Oct 17, 2009 4:15 PM EDT up reply actions

Hahaha!!!..yep!!

I kinda feel it is rather irritating from a fan perpective to comment on can’t, however I love when these “analysts” do it..The players see and hear their “Can’t” rants and it just serves to pump them up.

by Bobbiblue on Oct 17, 2009 6:03 PM EDT up reply actions

That's what i'm leaning toward

The Gaints and Ravens were the only ones close to beating the Pats in the regular season. But the familiarity amongst the Giants and the Pats (for the Giants) may of paid off. Preseason, regular season and the SB meetings! There is a history of what may be expected. The outcomes were similar, though on varying degrees of the score.

So with the Giants and Saints, there is no evidence to suggest that either team can’t do this or that. I would say that the word can’t, is a pre-cursor pertaining to events that cannot be achieved with no basis. On the other hand, maybe or might, may be the best way to describe an event with no historic reference!

Then again, i don’t like to resort to the would’ve, could’ve and should’ves the day after. It’s not an exact science given these games, but it’s fun though if we win!

by Hootman on Oct 17, 2009 9:01 PM EDT up reply actions

The Giants have the best O-line in the NFL..

And their roadgame record is impeccable..Our offense will not be effected by the crowd..You may see a few false starts due to crowd noise but when we quiet them down that will stop…beyond that, don’t think this team can’t move the football..Eli is one of the best pocket passers in the league. I hope to see alot of screen and swing passes to neutralize their blitze package…Should be a really good game..Tommorrow.

Vise Versa

The Saints D-Line is a whole lot better than the opponents the Giants have faced.

I’m not saying Eli isn’t good,he’s a great quarterback…but he hasn’t been pressured much from what i’ve seen this season. Steve Smith and Mario Manningham are great receivers as well.

The Saints D as a whole unit is aggressive, while they may not rush the whole house, they will get pressure onto Eli,forcing bad throws, ultimately resulting in bad throws which will in return result in an interception. The same thing can go for Drew Brees,it’s something we’ll have to wait and see.

Need a big game from Antonio Pierce

if we are going to beat the Saints. The Giants clearly have the personnel, it will be about not making any slips that could be costly. The D-line have to stop the much vaunted ‘09 Saints running offense in its tracks, stop Shockey having an impact (frustrate the hell out of him and his brain turns to mush!), and get to Brees .. all ’bread and butter’ stuff for the boys in blue. I don’t really have too many concerns about the secondary as Brees will only get 20-25 minutes on the field, and our guys seem to have done okay so far. I think one of the keys is AP, and kudos a-plenty if he has a good game (we could have used Boley in there to help out). I don’t see Eli having a problem, he will be pumped playing in the ’dome.

The Giants are pretty low in the pecking order of media coverage. Regardless of how poor or great they’re doing! Even in NYC, the dozens or so of multiple outlets, the Giants are pushed to the side. As fans, we like it that way!

by Hootman on Oct 17, 2009 9:16 PM EDT up reply actions

its because

they’re boring. for the past decade all they’ve done is win, win, win.

the media are obsessed with the yankees first, the giants don’t do anything crazy enough to merit coverage.

That is the way I like it

Just fly under the radar!!..We did get alot of unfortunate coverage however when Plax almost shot his “Uncle Willy and the Twins” off..but he’s gone now, probably working in the Cafeteria serving beans at an upsate New York prison.

Yes you'll never see Coaches

With the class and respect like Peyton and Coughlin allowing that junk from their players.

Tiki

I thought Tiki was a great running back, but he talked like he was the coach, GM and owner..Plus, he gave up a ring to spout his mouth off on TV..Him and Shockey drove Eli nuts..Thank God they are both gone..I ignore everything he says, and am glad not to have to see Shockey pouting and pissing and moaning every week.

Yeah your right Carson..

Eli and Tyree won that game..Plexiglass (that’s funny..lol)..Just caught a pass..I wonder if he works out in jail, after his prison cafeteria shift is over..Probably not…Never practiced for the Giants..but I bet he does not miss or show up late for meetings now..He pissed away a 35 million dollar job for a 2 dollars a week job.

" or any Giants cornerback not named Corey Webster"

This comment is totally unfair to Terrell Thomas, who has been so far everything we hoped Aaron Ross would be.

by Joe. on Oct 18, 2009 2:17 AM EDT reply actions

Joe I didn't see the comment

Out here that you are referring to, but if there was, I can’t possibly understand why anyone would even thing of not praising the job Terrell Thomas has done..that guy has stepped in and played outstanding football..A person would have to be nuts not to recognize that.

by Bobbiblue on Oct 18, 2009 5:56 AM EDT up reply actions

it was in the writeup from Ed....

but I don’t think he was saying that to slight TT.

He was just saying that Brees would have to be out of his mind to pick on CWeb. You know…kinda like how Eli torched Asomugha a few times?

If Brees wants to prove he’s better than Eli (yea..I said it…), it shouldn’t matter who’s out there.

Oh okay thanks Free...

The players we have out there in the secondary are doing a good job..Brees isn’t go to have an easy day by any stretch of the imagination..It’ll also be fun watching the only real hero the Saints have ever had, Archie rooting for his Son.

by Bobbiblue on Oct 18, 2009 8:20 AM EDT up reply actions

that's gonna be hard on the old man....

but he’s done it for payton before, between me and you i always thought that eli was his favorite

by r c a on Oct 18, 2009 9:59 AM EDT up reply actions

Yes it is going to be tough on him..

Rooting for your Son and the Saints at the same time..boy that is hard…but either way he goes home happy.

by Bobbiblue on Oct 18, 2009 11:47 AM EDT up reply actions

Read the sentence again. It was definitely a dig at everyone in the secondary not named Corey Webster. Not a big deal; just saying I think he’s been quite good.

LGT's resident moderate Yankee hating fan.

by Joe. on Oct 18, 2009 11:31 AM EDT up reply actions

and right back at ya Yankee hater....

It was meant to say that Brees will not pick on Webster, so will try his luck on the other CB’s not named Webster.

Not a slight on anyone, just acknowledging that C-Web is one of the best in the game.

If Brees is successful, its cuz he succeded in picking on other CB’s not named Webster…cuz he’s NOT succeeding against Webster.

With a 5-0 start, and some easy games ...

my Giants Tourette’s has been in remission.

I feel an outbreak coming on …

Gonna be a great game.

today's the day........

down here game day is a sacred thing many rituals must be followed ,and taboos avoided, my mom in the kitchen, cooking up the game day gumbo,my wife’s in the living room making sure the place has the perfect fung swai (i don’t spell chinese well).the menfolk are making sure that the proper amount of liquid libations will be on hand, and at the proper temperature.
my grand mother was busy putting a gris-gris on payton’s plantar-what ever ya call it,we had to tell her it was eli today, but it was to late, so if payton pulls up lame today,ya’ll will know the power fo the gris-gris.

all joking aside, thanks to everyone here at BIGBLUEVIEW for letting spout off, and ramble on, this site is a class organization, it’s poster are both knowledgeable and hospitable (for the most part )

it’s nearing the time for me to don my undefeated, unwashed drew brees jersey, it’s power can be smelled from across the room a mixture of BO and that half of beer my grand ma spilled on me during the “eagals” game.

I dunno about that....

see..we’ve won in the last 13 years.

Also, as a die hard fan (and bandwagon fan HATER), I don’t care what the outside perception of the Yanks is.

…and besides, after 2007, the Red Sox have done their fair share of Cowboy-baseball-ism.

Every media outlet in the world is on the Red Sox jock, just like the Cowboys every year.

So….no, the Yankees really aren;’t the Cowboys anymore

That was some ballgame!

How about that A-Rod finally busting through his playoffs slump?..Awesome!

by Bobbiblue on Oct 18, 2009 12:11 PM EDT up reply actions

its about time!

Well, its bit too early tho. He wasn’t quite the late inning game tying guy he is right now in 2004.

But against Minny and against the Red Sox for 3 games…he was this same exact player.

They are a much different team this year tho, so I don’t expect that sort of letdown (given that it was the first of its kind in history…i doubt it happens either…)

Tough game

I’m worried about the lack of boley, Phillips and Ross against a legit QB and some good WRs and a quality TE. Let’s face it Romo is by far the best QB the GIants have faced all year and Bress is a hell of a lot better than him. I think NO will score and convert a lot of third downs and run well on the Giants. On the positive side I see Eli playing really really well. In a dome in his hometown he’ll step up today. I see a shootout we just need to convert redzone opportunities to TD’s and run well enough to controll the clock at the end of the game. I think it’s a toss up fellas. If Eli has the ball last Giants win if Brees does Saints win.

by Landeta on Oct 18, 2009 11:06 AM EDT reply actions

i agree.....

but i think the score will be in the low 20’s, both D’s will play well, and a lot more running than most would think with drew and eli under center.

i also think it will be the last team with the ball that wins

by r c a on Oct 18, 2009 11:11 AM EDT up reply actions

gotta remember Landeta...

we have this defensive line, has 3 All-Pro caliber (not fake Pro-Bowl caliber…) DE’s in it. Also, an extrememly underrated Robbins and Cofeild in there too.

Saints have a fairly banged up O-Line and are gonna have to max protect a lot because of it.

Opens up a lot of blitz and double coverage opportunities.

I see Brees running for his life :)
