A chat with Canal Street Chronicles
With our New York Giants traveling to the Big Easy to face the 4-0 New Orleans Saints (yippee, a real NFL team for a change!!) I checked in with 'Saintsational' over at Canal Street Chronicles. Here is the result of our chat.
Canal Street Chronicles: My first question has got to be about Eli. I know he say's he's fine but Plantar Fasciitis is a very painful and very lingering injury. Are you worried about it effecting his play on Sunday?
BigBlueView: No, not really ... he was absolutely fine on Sunday, and threw the ball beautifully. Of course, he barely played into the second quarter as it was already 28-0, so maybe that wasn't a good test. I am curious to see what happens if he has to move around some or gets popped a couple of times, but I'm not worried about his ability to make the throws.
Canal Street Chronicles: Today on Big Blue View you mentioned Brandon Jacobs' inability to break out in 2009. What should Saints fans expect from the Giants running game?
BigBlueView: A heavy dose of it, I think. The Giants can score (they are 2nd in the league in points), but my guess is they want to avoid a shootout if they can. So, they will try to run the ball. Jacobs is healthy, I just think that when he is in the game teams have been crowding the line of scrimmage more giving him fewer places to run. When he hesitates at the line or has to change direction before he's into the secondary he isn't as effective. Ahmad Bradshaw has been tremendous. He's a big-time playmaker and a breakaway threat every time he touches the ball.
Canal Street Chronicles: "What do you think the Giants defense needs to do to stop the Saints offense?
BigBlueView Is the Saints offense stoppable? Seriously, it's all about the pressure. Can the Giants vaunted defensive line get to Drew Brees, or will they have to bring extra people. The Giants are eaily No. 1 in the league in pass defense at 104.8 yards per game, but in some respects that is just as much about the caliber of teams they have played as it is anything else. I am very curious to see how Terrell Thomas at corner, and C.C. Brown and Aaron Rouse (replacing the injured Kenny Phillips) hold up at safety against this passing attack.
BigBlueView: Let me turn this around on you a bit. How well do you think the Saints defense matches up with the Giants offense? And what worries you more, Eli Manning or the Giants running game?
Canal Street Chronicles: I have a lot of confidence in the Saints defense now and nothing would surprise me anymore. They have proven they are good enough to win games for the Saints when the offense can't get it done. They have been pretty good at shutting down the run but the threat of a two-back attack worries me a bit. That could play a factor as the game wears on. But I'm a bit suspicious of Eli's injury and if the Giants success depends on him, I'm confident the Saints can bring some pressure and take advantage.
BigBlueView: Tell me a little more about that unit, since I'm really not as familiar with the personnel as I should be.
Canal Street Chronicles: After a couple of disappointing seasons, veterans Charles Grant and Will Smith have finally been earning their exorbitant paychecks. Grant leads the team with 4.0 sacks. On the inside is Sedrick Ellis, last years first round draft pick, and Remi Ayodele has been filling in for the injured Kendrick Clancy. Also in the mix is Anthony Hargrove who plays both DE and DT. He has a big motor and has been a pleasant surprise for fans this year.
Canal Street Chronicles: I'm assuming you have no regrets about the Shockey trade? Are you worried he might be out for blood this weekend?
BigBlueView: Oh, he will be fired up. We know that. Shockey was a great player for the Giants for a long time, though not as great and not as important as he thought he was. That was always the crux of it. He wanted the offense to be about him, and under Tom Coughlin the offense will never be about the tight end. No regrets because the Giants are doing just fine, thank you.
BigBlueView: I have to turn that around and ask you your impressions of Shockey. I know he had a rough first year. He leads the team in receptions this year, I believe. How well is he playing, and behaving?
Canal Street Chronicles: He's behaving fine. None of that baby stuff. The Saints have a great locker room with only quality players. As far as on the football field, he's a go-to guy. Brees trusts him and knows he can make those tough catches. Shockey caught two touchdowns in week one against the Giants but has been more quiet lately. In my opinion, he still needs to do a bit more to prove this trade was worth the draft picks the Saints gave up.
Canal Street Chronicles: Any memories of Sean Payton as offensive coordinator on the Giants and having playcalling duties taken away from him?
BigBlueView: Oh, sure. I have to admit I NEVER thought Payton would be a quality NFL head coach. He was pretty much a flop in New York in getting along with Jim Fassel, and I don't think he did that great of a job in Dallas with Bill Parcells, either. I had no clue what the Saints were thinking when they hired the guy. But, that's why I do this and people who run football teams run football teams. Except for Dan Snyder and Vinny Cerrato, that is.
Canal Street Chronicles: What does it feel like, as a fan, to have your team win the Superbowl? Saints fans don't know the feeling and this year is as good as any to finally get that chance.
BigBlueView: Well, all I can say it is a feeling you want to experience again and again. Super Bowl 42 was the greatest Giants game I have ever seen, and I will always remember it. A fan should always, once in their lifetime, get to experience winning the big prize. Shoot, Red Sox fans have gotten to do it.
BigBlueView: Last question from me. Are you looking at this game as a sort of 'measuring stick' for the Saints? I know for the Giants this is without question the best team they have played, and the first 'real' game they have played in a month.
Canal Street Chronicles: Yes. Very much so. This game won't neccessarily determine the outcome of the season but it will give us a chance to see how good the Saints really are. Even if they lose, the way in which they lose will be telling. But a victory could give the team lots of confidence to take into the middle of the season.
Canal Street Chronicles: Prediction?
BigBlueView: Oh .... that is soooo tough. I have to keep the faith, so I will say Giants, 31-30. I will say this, though, a loss here won't surprise -- or devastate me -- provided that the Giants show they are a top-flight team. Which I think they will.
BigBlueView: Prediction from you?
Canal Street Chronicles: I think it's going to be a great game and very close. Giants are a talented team but the Saints are at home and the Dome will be loud. Saints 27-24.

.....and the beautiful cheerleader wonders
“How can I muster another cheer and we’re down by 10 with the ball in Eli’s hands and only 1:32 minutes in the game??”
While at the same time thinking to herself...
“Should I eat something today?”

ummm
why would you care if she ate something… shes freakin hot.
whatever it is she is doing, its working.
The standards are slipping
Ed normally gets two cheerleader pictures in this article.
However, given how everyone went all school boyish the last time I can hardly blame him for just the one picture!

I’m thinking these posts are getting “looked at,” but not read.

I had already read it on the Saints blog...
So yea, if I’m being honest I just looked at this one…
Glad to see it back though Ed, I always very much enjoy the content of these conversations.

I was excited to come see a hot chick, read the article and laugh all day at work with the funny comments people make about the girls and not the aricle. Common Ed I am disappointed today, my funny bone were already tickling

How often do teams
get significant pressure on Eli? Not very often, as I recall. If the Saints defense relies on getting a pass rush with just their front four I think they may be in some trouble there, to be honest.
How often do teams run the ball down the Giants throat? Not very often either, which is why our safeties can play so deep. If the Saints can’t run the ball the Giants will just play a deep cover 2 and wait for the ball. I don’t expect to see a lot of blitzes for the Giants D this week.
your gonna be surprised.........
only the jets blitz more than the saints, don’t get me wrong they get good pressure from the down linemen, but when they blitz they usually bring more than one, i’ve seen them bring both corners on several plays
Blitzing against young QBs
is usually the best strategy. Blitzing against a veteran QB with a well-rounded set of WRs is not. I wouldn’t be shocked to see the Saints rely a lot less on the blitz, for fear of giving up those smoke and bubble screen passes Smith and Ham have been so adept at lately.
Not to mention Bradshaws ability on screens.
And Nicks has a 40+ yard Screen for a TD this year.
I just don’t think the Saints would have much success if they blitzed heavy, Eli’s too smart for that, and way to poised in the pocket these days.

gergg williams' style ........
is to dictate to the offense, make you take those hot routes, then make a good tackle for a short gain, thats gonna be the key for the giants O, can the hot receivers make their man miss and get yards after the catch.
They've done it all year
it will be interesting and i’m sooooo excited to see this game, thank god its at 1pm!
on the filp side.....
the saints have been a great tackling team, the longest run against to date in 18 yds .harper ,sharper greer, gay, all tackle well in the open field.
thats my key to the game can ya’ll turn short passes into long gains.because i don’t think ya’ll will run the ball on this team
the saints are not the raiders, just like the giant are not the bills

Which would be fine
if your corners and safeties aren’t blitzing. When they blitz, no one is there to tackle the receiver. See, that’s the rub. Alternatively, if your secondary is worried about playing man-to-man coverage to stop the short routes, they can’t blitz to bring pressure and they have to cover the WR longer.
I don’t have the statistics, but to be honest I don’t remember the Redskins defense bringing much pressure.
GW betting on confusion
If you think the Saints are a base 4-3 that blitzes with LBs or CBs, you’d be mistaken. Pay attention Sunday to see how many times we line up in a 3-4 stacked or 3-4 slide. I guarantee Eli will see things he hasn’t seen on tape yet. It all depends on how well he and his receivers react. If they sync up- big play. If they are not – sack or INT. GW has brought something new to the table every week as this D has evolved. It’ll be a real chess match, and I just hope Eli will be playing checkers – although I highly doubt it.

I believe both
the 49ers and Ravens run hybrid 3-4 defenses as well. The Giants played both of them last year and won, along with the 3-4 defense from the Steelers and the Brown. Eli also sees the 3-4 twice per year from the Cowboys.
When the Saints run the 3-4, who is the NT? The Giants have had problems when the NT, like Shawn Rodgers or Ratliff, get quick penetration.
NT would be Sedrick Ellis
First round pick of ’08.
by WhoDat_OH on Oct 15, 2009 4:49 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions
In fact: in the 3-4, ALL DL are first rounders
Not that that means a whole lot.
by WhoDat_OH on Oct 15, 2009 4:50 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions
Right
Jamarcus Russell is not only a first rounder but a first overall pick. 1st round, 2nd round, 3rd, that all means nothing. They’re all pros.
Either way,
There’s gonna be one helluva good team to leave this weekend’s game with a loss. It’s still early in the season so I just hope both teams come out of it without significant injuries. We’ll have to settle it in playoffs where it really matters.

Marques Colston-7th round; selection #252 !
by WhoDat_OH on Oct 15, 2009 5:46 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions
I love me some Marques
Hofstra boy
"[The Giants] beat us down. We were beat by a grown-man team, a team we want to be like one day. They came in here and took it to us. Out-manned us, out-gunned us. ... It wasn't even close." - Raheem Morris, 9/27/09
great pick
Love the dude from Hofstra!
But, Ahmad Bradshaw has a SB ring, and was the leading rusher in that SB. Call me when you win more than one playoff game in a season.
Have you seen
Manningham and Nicks. That’s what they do. 3 yard catch turns into 45 yard td catch. We’ve actually been living on YAC this year. See Bradshaw screen from last week.
i did see that.....
i noticed no one touched them for many yards, playing the saints they will have to break some tackles, not to say they can’t .
One thing we can ALL agree on
As a Saints fan it is a prerequisite that you HATE the Dallas Cowboys!! We have THAT in common with the G-men fans.
My favorite stat of the year so far (at the time of kickoff): All Cowboys wins have come against winless teams; all Dallas losses come against undefeated teams.

more about the saints D
the saints play a hybrid defense some times they play a 4-3 than on the next play they can play a 3-4 with the same players, they all so bring safeties and corners often
I've posted this somewhere earlier
This will be the Saints first real test on defense. In order, the Saints have beaten a rookie, a backup, (Future Hall of Famer………..not) Trent Edwards, and another rookie. I hope to God that the Saints do blitz all day. If you’ve got Nicks or Ham on your fantasy team, this may be a good week to play them.
they will
the only way a team like them will stop blitzing is if the running game gashes them or screens. To be honest we might be able to get some big plays on them in the passing game but Eli standing there taking hits is not my idea of something i would want to see.
Hopefully he gets the ball out quick and we run on them all day.
The jets D played really well against them but they are coming off a bye with two weeks to get ready.
So we shall see and lets be thankful its a 1 pm start we dont have too many others for the rest of the year. The Eagles game in philly was just moved to 1 pm from 4:15 thankfully
by True Blue All Day on Oct 15, 2009 12:09 PM EDT up reply actions
that's the way the saints like to play.....
hit the QB early and often, they will give up the big play but the QB will pay
Remember RCA ...
G-Men are well familiar with Gregg Williams’ D schemes. And if there’s one team we owned in the NFC East the past few years, it was the ’Skins.
he never had............
an offense that can put up points like the saints, gibbs ran a conservative, run first team, with the saints averaging 36 points a game the D can play a little more aggressive, the saints have yet to play from behind this season, taking the lead early than keeping it, forcing teams to throw more than they might want to.
just don’t do like the jets did, they won the toss then deferred,3 mins. later they were down 7- zip.
ha!
that’s a slap in the face for Rex Ryan.
I wouldn’t say it’s cocky, but deferring definitely says, “I have complete faith in our D to stop you.”
When you fail quickly, it’s really funny and embarassing!
You play to win the game!
by Simms-McConkey on Oct 15, 2009 1:45 PM EDT up reply actions
It's going to be
hard to put up 36 points if you don’t have the ball. Ball control (time of possesion) is what the Giants have been about for a long time.
i don't think we'll get 36......
it’s gonna be a slug fest, last team with the ball wins, unless one team turns the ball over, neither team can be careless with the ball.
the saints have ran the ball well this season i look them to try to keep it up,
cheerleader
I know few cheerleaders are MENSA candidates, but this one, in this picture, looks spectacularly dumb.

I should have wrote this on the previous post
but….. Mosley from espn put it bets in regards to Jacobs and Bradshaw numbers….
You just need to look at the RB who signed with the Bucs and just look at his numbers and tell me he does not miss BJ and our offensive line.
PS. By way I need to stop reading you guys everyday. Last night I dreamt about the “big blue view” page… I don’t quite remember what it was , but I think it was related to a post about me…
Now I can say that eat, breathe and dream about the Giants
I think it's cool
we have commentors in Mexico and England. Such international flavor! Dallas may be alleged as America’s team, but the Giants are on pace for world domination, baby.
funny

Soooo good.
I remember they did an article after Jeter broke the Yankee hit record. I think it was titled..
“Yankees Celebrate Derek Jeter having 217 less career hits than Harold Baines.”
Truly a funny observation.

and
who would we have from the Saints!
i would take Vilma

Assessing all these comments
It underlines my thoughts that this is going to be a tough fought game for both teams..Can’t wait for Sunday to get here…I don’t think the blitzes N.O. try are going to rattle Eli..He’ll pick them apart..and we definitely need to focus on Brees by at least blocking his throwing lanes..I am not all that concerned about their running game, since we pretty much have shut that down with the exception of Dallas..but we won that game also. This is a good test for both teams.
the saints......
get their best RB, mike bell, back. he’s been resting for this game, with the size advantage our guards have, look for the saints to come out running, especially when ya’ll play a nickle package. look for a lot of two TE sets, with a FB, we also use an O-lineman (zack strief),in three TE sets.
the best way to slow down ya’lls great pass rush is to run the ball,
one reason the Giants D is so great....
they stop the run well too(don’t let those 1st 2 games fool ya)
