Off to Kansas City, Week 4 Preview/Predictions.

Since it's only week 4 and we still have plenty of season left...I thought it might be fun to add some of our brilliant predictions into this weeks Preview, and if it goes over well, future weeks as well.

As you all know we're off to Kansas City this week, who hasn't exactly proved to be a powerhouse thus far. But I urge you, do not let their record fool you, even though we dominated at Tampa last week, and even though they have lost their last 7 at home...playing at Arrowhead is no easy task. It's easily one of the most intimidating places to place for an opposing player, that sea of red, and if the Giants don't come in with their heads on straight, we could be in for a long and disappointing Sunday.

Star-divide

From cbssports.com

The first two games of the New York Giants' three-game road stretch went well. With a second straight winless opponent up next, New York will look to stay unbeaten before finally heading home.

"We have the talent to compete with anyone," Cassel said. "We just have to eliminate the bad football and the penalties."

The Giants face the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday in their first game at Arrowhead Stadium in more than eight years.

A week after needing a field goal as time expired to win at Dallas, New York (3-0) had little trouble with lowly Tampa Bay last Sunday, rolling to a 24-0 victory. The Giants outgained the Buccaneers 397-86, using the game to re-establish their dominant ground attack and turning in an outstanding effort on defense.

"We had a couple of objectives coming in here," coach Tom Coughlin said. "We had a game in which we didn't play very well against the run (against the Cowboys), so we knew that we would be tested and we would have to rise up and do a better job there. We also knew we needed to rush the ball better than we had, so we did a pretty good job with that."

Coughlin's team gave up 251 rushing yards in Dallas, but held Tampa Bay to 28. Meanwhile, Ahmad Bradshaw ran for 104 yards on 14 carries and Brandon Jacobs had 92 yards and a touchdown as New York piled up 226 yards on the ground.

Eli Manning threw for 161 yards and went 14 for 24 with two touchdowns and no interceptions in an efficient performance.

"Our defense was very, very, very impressive," Jacobs said. "I knew they would come out with a chip on their shoulder."

It was all the more impressive considering how banged up the unit is. Starting defensive end Justin Tuck was in for a handful of plays a week after suffering a left shoulder injury, while the Giants were without defensive lineman Chris Canty (calf), cornerbacks Aaron Ross and Kevin Dockery (hamstrings) and safety Kenny Phillips (knee), who is out for the year.

The Giants hope to get Canty, Ross and Dockery back soon, but none of them have played this season.

New York also has some injury issues on the offensive side. Coughlin anticipates Bradshaw playing Sunday, but the running back didn't practice Wednesday because of ankle and foot injuries.

"He's got an old ankle (injury) that causes problems," Coughlin told the team's official Web site. "He came out of the game and was re-taped. He has a foot that has bothered him. So he has a couple of things going on.

"He has a unique style and I think it puts a lot of pressure - it has in the past - on that one ankle. So he has some issues there."

The Giants were also without wide receivers Domenik Hixon (knee) and Hakeem Nicks (foot) last week, and starting right tackle Kareem McKenzie was forced out of the Tampa Bay game with a knee injury.

With their depth set to be tested again, New York will take on a Kansas City team that is near the bottom of the league offensively and defensively. The Chiefs (0-3) have given up 28.3 points per game while scoring 16.0 per contest.

Kansas City lost 34-14 last week to a Philadelphia club that was without its starting quarterback and relied heavily on youngsters and backups. The Chiefs allowed Kevin Kolb to throw for 327 yards and two touchdowns en route to their seventh straight loss.

Matt Cassel went 14 for 18 with two touchdown passes, but totaled just 90 yards through the air. Kansas City was hindered badly by penalties, committing 10 for 90 yards and having Jamaal Charles' touchdown run wiped out by a holding call.

The Chiefs were called for 19 penalties in the last two games.

"We cannot have 9-10 penalties in a game. We just can't do it," first-year coach Todd Haley said. "We have to coach them and make them more aware than we have to this point."

"We have the talent to compete with anyone," Cassel said. "We just have to eliminate the bad football and the penalties."

The Chiefs have lost seven straight at home since their last win there Sept. 28 of last year.

All in all I pretty much feel like if the Giants come ready to play, they should be poised for a big day on both sides of the ball.

Now for PREDICTIONS. I figure we could do Offensive Player of the Game, Defensive Player of the Game, and Final Score. Perhaps if we get enough entries we can do a Monday Morning Quarterback type of thing, congratulating those who made some good predictions, and figuring out why (for example) Brandon Jacobs didn't have as big a day we thought he would. And please, let me know if you guys have any ideas to add, because even though this is already the best blog on Giants football out there, I know I'm always looking for more.

I'm gonna go with...

Offensive Player: Eli Manning. He’s been on this year, and although they don’t look like much on paper Kansas City does have some ability to stop the run. With Bradshaw a little banged up, and Jacobs getting off to a slow start, I think we may see another highlight reel performance from our boy behind center.

Defensive Player: Corey Webster. He’ll probably be matched up in man coverage with Bowe for most of the day. I see the Giants D shutting down the run early, if our offensive can put points on the board Cassel is going to have to throw. I don’t see a lot of weapons on that offense after LJ (especially with the absence of TGonz) so I can see Cassel trying to force it to his number one…Webster will make him pay.

Final Score: 27-10 G-MEN

My Take

I say smash mouth is the way to go. I really feel that with the OLine that the Giants have they can take it too the opposing defense with the running game and then that opens up Eli to make good precise throws.

Offensive player: Jacobs big day again, some small runs in the 1st qtr and then breaks some big runs in the 2nd half of the game. He will wear down that defense and then mix in some Bradshaw( if he plays). This is the recipie for success, I just hope that it works against a mediocre defense.

Defensive player: D Line, with the pressure that this group can get on Cassel they will be the difference. Some could also say the secondary but i feel that without the pass rush and making the QB make decisions quicker than he wants the secondary wouldnt be as successfull. At least 3 sacks of the the QB this week.

Given that they made Kevin Kolb into a player of the week,

Id say Eli’s time to shine early on is still a go.

Given that in the past the Giants have broken out of a mini running game “slump” against a team like the Ravens, Id say all this talk about how their suddenly mediocre, or at least Jacobs is, is gonna make him come out and beat the hell out of KC’s D.

As for the Giants D? They don’t even have D-Bowe. I just don’t see how they are gonna do anything, unless LJ goes off. Even so, Giants are gonna have to beat themselves to lose this one.

Prediction

Giants are too dominant for a stagnant Chiefs offense. NFL games are won in the trenches.
Offensive player of the game: Brandon Jacobs I’m lookin for 100 yards and 2 scores.
Defensive player of the game: Corey Webster I believe he shuts down his side of the field and ends up with a pick

Outcome: Giants 27 Chiefs 6

Facing the critics

So far the Giants appeared to have thrived on the motivation provided by the ‘critics’. The G-Men have no receivers … so up they step. The G-Men can’t stop the run … so they stop the Bucs in their tracks. If this is the trend then we can expect Jacobs and the pass rushers (Osi, Kiwi, Tuck) to have big games against the Chiefs. They are my predictions for O and D players of the game.

Outcome: I don’t expect the Chiefs to get into double digits and with a majority of the possession I see the Giants scoring at least 28 pts (2 TDs to Jacobs).

Boley

Yup

I was really upset when he got hurt and even more so when i found out about his criminal activities, i really hate guys that beat on women… but as long as he don’t do it again and he keeps playing like this i guess he deserves a second chance.. The guy is Money at the LB position and i loved watching him playing LB in passing downs(Nickle and Dime) finally a Giants LB thats not just a MLB stopping the run playing OLB lol

You guys...

are just like us…in hoping your runningback will get better and put up good numbers. It just won’t happen. LJ won’t nor will Jacobs.

KC knows shutouts

see, e.g., Sabrehagen
although TC tries to hold down the score, the D won’t let him.
44 – 0

(that’s my story, & i’m stickin to it)

OT

You don’t see this one going into OT then?

How do the G-Men use this game for maximum benefit with the more difficult games ahead? Do they just get another good win under their belts, or do you think there is benefit from stacking the points up early and pulling first line players out in the 4th as they did against the Bucs? I would certainly like to see Barden get some time. Although Gartrell Johnson (is that how you spell it?) is not likely to be on the roster when Ware returns, his enthusiasm to impress could make him a great distraction to the Chiefs which might give the WRs more options.

IDK about Gartrell...

When Coughlin goes out of his way to compliment somebody, that usually means he really likes what they’re doing on and (more importantly to TC) off the field. I could definitely see Gartrell holding on to that spot if he keeps up the good work.
