A chat with 'Arrowhead Pride'

(Photos via kcchiefs.com)

Our 3-0 New York Giants face the 0-3 Kansas City Chiefs this week. With that in mind, I turned to 'Arrowhead Pride' to find out about Kansas City. Or, really, just to have some text to go along with the cheerleader pictures. You can believe whatever you want.

Anyway, below is my chat with Joel Thorman, part of 'Pride's' amazing Thorman Brothers blogging duo.

Joel Thorman: Question No. 1: The Chiefs have a below average offensive line that has trouble protecting the quarterback. Are the Giants normally able to get pressure on the quarterback by rushing just four linemen?

Ed: The Giants have just three sacks in three games, but that is misleading. They have a terrific, deep front four that is a little thin right now because of injuries to Chris Canty and Justin Tuck. They will come with four and try to harass the quarterback, which they have done well even if they haven't piled up sack numbers. They are a defense built on pressure, and they will be coming.

Ed: Here is one for you. To be honest I thought the hiring of Todd Haley as head coach was a huge mistake. Your thoughts on Haley thus far? is he up to this job, or in over his head?

Joel Thorman: It's hard to tell. For the most part, a lot of the key players have bought into what he's trying to here so I think that's a good sign. It's too early for any revolting anyway, in my opinion. Haley has been preaching consistency and toughness which, frankly, the Chiefs haven't shown much of. So, while I think players do want to buy into the system, and many have, they've yet to demonstrate that on the field. Haley's demeanor is the exact opposite of our previous coach, Herm Edwards, so I expected there to be some backlash (and there has, like Brian Waters, but not as much as I previously though).

Me: A Matt Cassel question for you. There are rumblings that maybe bringing him in and giving him a huge contract was a mistake. Too early to tell? What are your impressions thus far?

Joel Thorman: Definitely too early to tell for me. I think it's really people being upset that the Chiefs are currently 0-3. Cassel's numbers aren't fantastic by any means but he's still completing 67% of his passes which, even with the small sample size, is a good number. Remember, this offensive system was basically brought on a week before the season when our previous offensive coordinator, Chan Gailey, was relieved of his duties. The offensive line, more than anything, is to blame for the poor offensive showing.

Ultimately, though, the offense as a whole is struggling and the quarterback will almost always take the blame for that.

Joel Thorman: Eli Manning obviously got a big extension over the offseason. What was the reaction to that? Based off his 2008 numbers he deserved, but prior years would indicate otherwise.

Me: Well, there are some people who will never give Eli credit no matter what. He's a Super Bowl MVP coming off a Pro Bowl season -- a franchise guy the Giants want to lead them for the next 7-10 years. They paid what they had to pay to make that happen. Eli is playing tremendous football right now -- he has a 104.1 QB rating, the (third)-highest in the league. Like I said, he will never make everyone happy. But, the Giants are lucky to have him.

Me: So, tell me. At 0-3 are you optimistic that things will get better for the Chiefs this season, or resigned to this being a rough year?

Joel Thorman: To be honest, I think it'll be a long year, which is really frustrating. The offensive line is, in my opinion, the biggest problem at this point and the chances of the Chiefs finding a solid offseason lineman in September or October is slim to none. Until that's fixed, I don't see this team doing a whole lot. The strides we've made on defense relative to 2008 will help, but this team still has a long, long way to go. My early season prediction of six wins isn't looking good at this point.

Is it Super Bowl or bust this year for you guys?

Me: Some fans would probably say yes, but I hate that thinking. Even though I'm also a Yankee fan, it's creeping Steinbrenner-ism, and it sets you up to be permanantly miserable. The Giants have a good shot at the big prize this season, but so many things can happen. I will be disappointed without an NFC East title, and without a deep run in the playoffs. But that doesn't mean the season is a failure. In some ways, it is already a success. The Giants have already found several exciting young players who should help them for a long time.

Me: Tell me about players on the Chiefs we might not know about who we should watch out for on Sunday?

Joel Thorman: There are a handful. Tamba Hali was kind of lost in the shuffle to the 3-4 but he's really starting to become a decent player in this scheme, which is surprising. We're becoming pleased with him. Brandon Flowers is another young one that's impressive. He's one of the better young corners in the league and played well last season despite the Chiefs NFL record (for futility) 10 sacks. He's been a little banged up this year but will be ready. Jamaal Charles is another young one we're excited about. He's quicker than a dart and has helped this offense.

Me: Here's one last question for you. I love to ask this one. If you could take one player off the Giants roster and put in your lineup, who would it be? Why?

Joel Thorman: That's a difficult question because I think the Giants are an example of the "right 53"  not necessarily the "best 53" so I will go with Brandon Jacobs. With the Chiefs offensive line, we need a running back that can get some yards on his own. Plus, I would very much enjoy lining up with Jacobs on the Chiefs in Madden.

Same question back at ya....if you know any Chiefs!

Me: Honestly, a tricky question for me to answer. I truthfully don't know your roster that well. If you are that high on Flowers, I might take him. The Giants are depleted by injuries in the secondary, and as much as I like the corners we have the only guy I am 100% sold on is Corey Webster.

I'm a huge fan of these conversations

Why?

1) interpromotion of SBNation blogs can only be a good thing!

2) CHEERLEADERS.

Nice body, but a bit of a butterface. That girl would never make the Eagles cheerleading squad.

the Redskins are really good too

and, come to think of it, so are the Cowboys. Hell, even when it comes to cheerleaders, the NFC East dominates.

Tynes is Eli Manning circa 2007.

which 2007 Eli are we talking about here

the three pick-sixes against Minnesota version or the Super Bowl MVP version? because if we’re talking about Tynes, i certainly wouldn’t agree with the comparison to the latter.

That's kinda my point...

Eli circa 2007 was all over the place, but in the end, he always got it done.

Just like Tynes.

Call me when Eli makes a game winning drive...

That wasn’t preceded by a stalled drive earlier in the game.

If he was as brilliant in the first 55 minutes as he is in the last 5, we would never need late game heroics.

we're not comparing

a stalled drive (which happens multiple times every single game) to missed field goals inside of 30 yards are we?

by SBakerTheTouchdownMaker on Oct 1, 2009 3:57 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

No...

But we are comparing two people who might not be the best in earlier parts of games but seem to come through and get us a “W” no matter what.

You seem to forget Tynes could have missed that third field goal in Green Bay, or either one of those two in Dallas. But he didn’t, he made them both and helped us get a win.

The same way Eli might throw 2 interceptions against the Bears in the first half (2007) but still cap the game off with a winning drive…so who cares if Eli throws three picks, or Tynes misses a chip shot…because when there’s 2 minutes left on the clock, I feel comfortable with both of them getting us the win, because neither one has proven they can’t do it.

you're right

and you make a good point that Tynes has come through – if he hadn’t the Giants/Green Bay NFC Championship game would top my list of all-time “kick-in-the-groin” sports disappointments (which is saying a lot considering i lived through the 90’s Knicks).

i just get really bitter and frustrated with kickers that are inconsistent, especially from short distances. however, Tynes is the guy right now, and there doesn’t appear to be anyone else out there, so i’ll grin and bear it.

there’s just something about putting the name Lawrence Tynes and Eli Manning in the same sentence that makes me nauseous. i’ll still have to agree to disagree on the comparison.

Haha okay I can see that...

Eli’s our golden boy so it’s really unfair to compare anyone to him anyway.

Good read

Thanks.  It seemed to me that he took a little shot at Eli regarding the extension. I mean the numbers arent the only thing defines a QB, it is leadership and poise under pressure and I dont believe that many QBs have that out of college. It takes MANY seasons to gain the confidence needed to play QB in the NFL, he was a project when the Giants traded for him and I would say that it has worked out pretty well to this point.

I also like to hear about the Chiefs players to watch for thats a great question. Lets hope they dont make any great plays against the Giants.

by GiantRB27 on Oct 1, 2009 11:41 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

No question

Yes, he was obviously saying he didn’t think Eli was worth the money.

by Ed Valentine on Oct 1, 2009 12:16 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

In fairness...

And I don’t know if this is the dialogue in its entirety, but it looks as though he was more reacting to the slight jab you took at Cassel. Even though they are at very different stages in their careers, they are both in a similar situation in that they have contracts many people believe are above their value. Eli in my eyes has earned his wage, Cassel still has some work to do but based on last year he seems very capable of leading on offense with the right talent around him, which the Chiefs simply do not have this year.

"We'll show up tomorrow and do the same thing we try to do every day, kick Pedroia's ass in cribbage and try and win a baseball game."

by tito (eight and oh) on Oct 1, 2009 12:26 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I'm still

puzzled when people say Eli isn’t worth that contract. If you’re just saying it’s because he’s not the best QB in the league then you’re missing the point.

They didn’t pay him based on being the best in the league.

I don’t think anyone can argue against the fact that he has gotten better every year. He has done everything they’ve asked of him. He’s at his peak now, and rising. He’s been in this offense and with this OL for years. He has slowly earned everyone’s respect and control of the huddle. He is the veteran voice on the offense. He is the face of the team and he doesn’t do anything off the field to disgrace the franchise.

They paid him big bucks because he has become exactly what the Giants set out to mold him into 5 years ago.

by Jaybat on Oct 1, 2009 1:40 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Exactly

This is what they wanted him to be, and he’s who they want to continue to lead the team. He’s our guy, and they’re keeping him here.

Funny he says

that becuase his Starter got a huge deal before he played one snap as the starter… I questioned that move by the Chiefs at the time but in the long run i think Cassel will be a medium to good QB in the nfl….

by GiantRB27 on Oct 1, 2009 5:08 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

well

with the guys to watch, Hali will flash with a sack or strip, but he never really has multi sack games…Flowers is a great corner, he almost every game is close to a pick 6 and the last 2 games had a beautiful pass deflection to end the first series.

Charles is really the only guy on offense outside Cassel to worry about, since Bowe WILL be out this week(trust that) Kc has a few possession guys, but charles is the only one that will make 3 miss and take it 30-50 yards quickly, he runs a 4.2

Regarding the Eli question

I see how it comes off, but I really wasn’t trying to take a shot. He’s had one very good year as a QB, and so has our QB (Cassel) so I was really playing off of that angle.

eli's very good year at qb

won a super bowl. cassell didn’t even make the playoffs. i don’t see how you can compare the two

by bmanley620 on Oct 1, 2009 1:17 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Well...

That was also Eli’s third year as a starter vs. Cassells first time seeing real game action since high school. Also take into account Eli led the Giants to a 10-6 record the year they won the Bowl and Cassell led the Pats to an 11-5 record last year…any other division and he would have been in the playoffs.

Besides, I think he’s talking about last year in the statistical sense, not the 2007 season. Eli wasn’t statistically a very good QB until last year…his first Pro Bowl season.

"We'll show up tomorrow and do the same thing we try to do every day, kick Pedroia's ass in cribbage and try and win a baseball game."

Not gonna change

The contract has been hammered since it first leaked out. That’s the nature of the beast, I’m afraid. There are too many fans focused on statistics and fantasy rankings and that’s just the way it is today. As long as Brees is putting up numbers like he is for less than Eli makes, for example, the point will always be made. We’re lucky that most Giant fans are smart enough to realize that all of Eli’s 4th Q comebacks, Lombardi trophy, playoffs every season he’s started, and cool demeanor are what you really want in a QB, not 5000 yards and 50 TDs, necessarily.

by TNYFBG on Oct 1, 2009 11:51 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Agreed

Some people will never be satisfied and that sucks for them. I was happy when we got Eli and I am still happy with he progression he has made as a QB. We just need to keep putting weapons around him and go from there.

Brees

The guy only puts up sick numbers because there defense sucks and he always has to throw the damn ball to come back… TEAM is what wins games not individual performances… everyone needs to contribute to win games in this league.. who cares if Eli is the best or not just be happy we don’t have any holes, thats what wins playoff games

I thought this was a lil sensistive

“Correct me if I am wrong on that ascertion. But when the questions are:

Haley is a mistake, is the job over his head?
Cassel is a mistake, right?
Your team is bad – do you think they can get better?
And then on the other side,

the Giants can’t sack the quarterback, but we have a tremendous pass rush
(which is it?)

How does that inform anyone about this game?

The Giants have beaten a terrible Washington team, a even more terrible Tampa Bay team, and their arch-rival when they were totally pumped up to ruin the debute of Jerry-World, and it took a little help from Tony Romo for them to do that.

I did like the questions about the players, though. I wish there was more of that. "

I think as an outside fan, which Ed is. You see a record of 0-3, a new QB, a new coach and you have to have those questions. As far, as our pass rush. We are getting hurries, which have led to a few INT’s this season, but our sacks have been low.

Giants fans have a swagger, still held over from the SB upset. Sorry if that upsets you. I have absolutely nothing against the Chiefs.

by Woogie526 on Oct 1, 2009 2:20 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

on the surface

he’s sort of right about the Giants 3-0 track record so far.

but when looking deeper into the Washington and Tampa wins, those were both games the Giants’ statistically dominated (kind of like the KC/Oakland game, except with a W instead of an L). Dallas may have gave the home opener away, but i don’t think the Giants have to apologize for that. frankly, that was the best i’ve seen the offense play in a long time.

there are things to worry about and things to improve on. i don’t think Ed with his line of questioning or any of the Giants’ fans were intentionally being arrogant. i also don’t think anyone was saying that the Chiefs are going to get stream-rolled come Sunday. it’s just that so far Kansas City has been a bad football team this season. there’s no way around it.

Funny that a Chiefs fan would want Brandon Jacobs

Christian Okoye v2.0

Although I gotta say, for a team that has a terrible offensive line and only got 10 sacks last year, I’m surprised he wouldn’t want Tuck or Snee.

Those pretty pictures made me feel like Jim Carey..

Right after he puts on the mask!!…“Hey Baby”!!..Seriously, a good exchange, honest exchange..I don’t think KC is anywhere close to where they need to be, but like I’ve commented before they have a young coach who also needs to learn not to be one dimensional..These coordinators that get elevated to a head coaching job tend to be either offensive or defensive focussed and need to learn how to manage bot sides of the ball.

by Bobbiblue on Oct 1, 2009 10:40 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I always find it funny

how offensive ‘geniuses’ like Brian Billick end up coaching a defensive juggernaut team with no offense at all like the Ravens were and then you see a guy like Bellicheck coach one of the greatest offensive teams in history like 2007 (tho he’s had some good defenses….)

But you’re right. A guy like Sean Payton would be better off if he could develop a more balanced team, otherwise he’s just a less willing to kill his own QB type coach similar to Mike Martz.

But we’ll see on Haley. I mean its not hard to look good as an OC when you have a rejuvenated Kurt Warner, Anquan Boldin and Fitzgerald on your Offense.

What the f$%k is the internet?
